Jessica Hische: The Master Behind Lettering
A graphic artist that has influenced me through my years of school has been
Jessica Hische. From my first semester until now, she has been a huge inspiration in what
I would like to achieve for myself as my career develops. Something that I would like to
begin to do is create my own lettering as well as illustrations.
She is one extraordinary creator at what she does. Jessica Hische is an American
letterer, illustrator, and type designer. Luckily, she is one of the most wanted female
designers by many different companies because of her awesome creations. Hische grew
up in Pennsylvania where she fell in love with the field during her first two years of high
school. Thankfully her parents were very supportive of the idea and her teachers were
interested in her talent as well. She went to college and graduated in year 2006 and was
shortly hired as a freelance designer. Later on that year, she departed from there and left
to work in Brooklyn with one of her idols.
Hische has been a letterer, illustrator, type designer, ever since 2009. She has
worked for many popular companies! Some of her clients include Wes Anderson and
Penguin Books. She spends her time coming back and forth from Brooklyn to San
Francisco. San Francisco is the place she calls home because she has a collaborative
studio and workshop space with long time friend Erik Marinovich. Besides working on
her important projects and designs. She now spends her time going to a speaking
engagements where she talks about her work and her upcoming ideas. She now has an
upcoming event around states in the United States. Aside from her being an alcoholic, she
is married and has a daughter with him as well.
Jessica Hische is also know for her site called the “Daily Drop Cap” where she
posts the different alphabets she has created. There are plenty of styles that she has
created by hand, her designs are fun and modern. She also did a book. She published "In
Progress: See Inside a Lettering Artist's Sketchbook and Process, from Pencil to Vector"
in September 2015, which gives insight to her creative process and work she has
completed as a hand lettering artist. Hische is just an awesome human being with a great
creative mind and my idol.
