Why are we drawn to beauty? The beauty of people, the beauty of design, the beauty of the natural, the beauty of man-made creations? The purpose of this inherent human phenomenon is ignored by most, but in others it lights an unquenchable fire for knowledge and expression. Some of these people seek fame, some seek riches, and some seek to draw from the world around them and actually create beauty. We call these particular people architects. Not the creators of buildings, but the designers of space; morphing spaces, small and large, to accommodate the needs of humans, preserve the natural element of our planet, and serve as a medium for expressing beauty. This allure of grasping for something that does not exist easily within our reach has brought me to this point in my life and has inspired me to become a designer of the future.

What you will see before you, within this map of my development as a designer, will provide a small insight into my thought process regarding the creation of space. Beginning with my introduction to the design environment at the University of Oregon School of Architecture and ending with much more recent projects, you will witness my development through the design process, and much more importantly the ability to perceive and tangibly sculpt beauty.

This personal evolution through my formal, and informal, education has brought out a clear set of design principles I follow. Most importantly; contextual inspiration, conceptual thinking, and an ever growing desire to make this world a brighter place.

Impending bloom is a study of a dynamic work/live environment consisting of an organic pro-duce market below & 2 housing units above. Capping this iconic landmark is a vegetative screen, a green frame amongst the dull Grey London skyline.

this condensed study abroad opportunity focused on an international language school located on a important piazza in the heart of rome. after study-ing contextual & historical precedence I proposed a contem-porary yet highly responsive design to occupy the currently abandoned site.

my first exposure to urban plan-ning & a team studio project, pro-poses a redesign of the Highway 99 arterial northwest of down-town eugene. AFter intensive study, interviews, & consultation with local city planners, presented here is our vision to revitalize this heavily residential neighborhood & bring sustain-able economic & social change to the people.

Our proposal is to split the highway at certain points in order to create three urban islands of concentrated developable fabric in-between the roadways. This new corridor will accommodate multiple modes of trans-portation, focusing on the experience of the pedestrian in particular. This includes the addition of grand sidewalks, a cycle track (glorified bicycle lane), & a two way Bus rapid transit (BRT) lane. These new infrastructures & the now-occupiable habitat between the scaled-down highway will provide a catalyst for initial & future growth.

Development will extend from these transit centers outwards to create a transitional gradient between the exclusively low-density single family housing west of the highway & the valuable urban collaborative within these nodes.

Below, you can see the concentrated development anticipated with this proposaL compared with the existing decayed urban sprawl.

this simple design focuses on the structural aspects of an out-door market. easily constructed, cost efficient, & modular elements can be replicated to accommodate any program.

as the creative director of the student-run sustainability conference, hopes, I was tasked to come up with an aesthetic to represent the conference in all forms of media. in its prior 20 years, speakers have come from all across the world (neri oxman from israel) & represented a wide variety of professions (nike designers).

Our ability to generate informa-tion now far exceeds our capacity to understand it. Finding patterns and making meaningful connections inside complex networks is one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century. To bring about meaningful change we must adapt existing disciplines and begin to explore systems of exchange, whereby patterns of integrated thinking across disciplines converge to form collaborative solutions yet to

be discovered.

This fast paced five day international competition brought over 1600 teams together to address the issue of preservation in norways northern-most archipelago, svalbard. in the midst of this bare mountainous & glacial landscape exists pyramiden, an abandoned russian coal manufacturing settlement. The task was to “develop new perceptions & novel ideas & to expirement with concept & programs for the preservation of pyramiden that break the dictum of current practices.”

OUR PROPOSAL: PROJEKT

In the most fragile reaches of the Earth, the intensity and seriousness of climate change is most evident. Extreme environments bear the brunt of society’s choices; they experience accelerated transformation. Considering the wild, remote nature of Svalbard, we pose the question—how can we preserve and celebrate the pre-existing culture and vernacular architecture while minimizing the inevitable negative human impact?

PROJEKT is an awareness program that preserves Pyramiden’s history by broadcasting the town to all corners of the planet. During the daylight seasons this feed acts as a virtual museum where people can view the architectural features and natural decay in real time -- a visual experience similar to Norway’s concept of “slow-TV,” accessible from televisions, computers, tablets, etc. Through virtual exhibitions we bring the essence of a faraway place to humanity’s doorstep. Viewers are placed on the land of Pyramiden, without setting foot within the ecologically fragile system.

During the seasons of darkness in Pyramiden, projectors placed along the mountain ridge cast a system of digital 3-D architectural units onto the town below. Each architectural unit represents an active viewer. As viewership of the broadcast increases, so do the number of units. Projections of these architectural units form a larger mass -- a city -- across the landscape simulating our environmental impact. We are projecting our impact [cause] onto the site, and the site is projecting our impact upon us [effect].

In all, we are establishing a network of camera/projectors mounted along the ridge-line above Pyramiden. Extraction of geothermal energy produces power to run this system, utilizing abandoned mines as infrastructure.

as part of my maturity as a designer, I spent 3 months in south africa volunteering to help construct a small communal library & shelter. serving as more than just a place for reading books & studying, it was a safe haven for dozens of young children whose homes were not a true place of refuge. the personal development i experienced after living in a place where the only genuine beauty is one of human interaction & pleasure, was immense.

how had a scattering of volunteers from every corner of the world constructed a building that serves to inspire an entire community using only sandbags & plaster? HERE I realized that form & complexity do not represent the entirety of architecture, the human experience is the only judge of pure architecture. How can we spread this human intimacy worldwide with architecture?
