POLITICS, PER DAVE HILE

Q: What are some of the politics, or unspoken rules of your company?

A: “We have just two: Do badmouth fellow employees and don’t steal their work. We don’t have a strict dress code or anything like that. We ask that you be on time, do some good work and be ethical.”

INTERVIEW: IN PERSON

Q: What happened to the last person who had the position I’m applying for?

A: She had very excellent design skills, however she had very poor deadline skills. In a fast paced operation such as this, an employee needs to have both.

Q: Where do you see this company in five years?

A: Hopefully, we’ll still be here and grown out both national and regional. Don’t get me wrong, our company has a good foothold in the industry, but things in this industry change at a quick pace. Also, I hope we have another dozen clocks up on the wall.

Q: Since this job is very computer oriented, whats the company policy on computer use for personal things?

A: We really don’t mind it too much. As long as the employee not facebooking, tweeting, and ebay shopping all day and doing the work needed, we’re okay with that.

Q: Would there be any future opportunity to advance within the firm?

A: Always. Employees come and go. We’ll always look inward to fill higher positions first, but sometimes there is a higher qualified individual in the market.

Q: What are the day-to-day responsibilities of the job?

A: There will be a lot of illustration, brainstorming, designing, copywritting, and proofreading. You’ll be a part of the team, an equal, if you’re hired.

Q: Do you think my skills/portfolio matches up to what your company is looking for?

A: Yes and no. There are some really good ideas and layouts that I see here, but they need further refinement. I would recommend that you look into the process of making mock websites into ready-to-go slices for live web. Also, try to look into using a bright palette of colors without using a lot of black.
