    The Android Market continued its steady growth in May 2011.

    Key insights in May are:

    As of the end of May the Android Market features 216,018 apps, 36.1% of

    which are paid

    Growing app numbers and competition on the Android Market forces the

    developers to search for alternative app distribution channels.

    There are almost 30 alternative Android app distribution platformsavailable today.

    Handster is the leading independent full-catalog app store, selling a

    selection of 23 thousand Android apps.

    Overall Android Market maintains a steady 2.6% growth in number of

    apps.

    New added apps in May contain 34% paid apps which slightly lowers the

    share of paid apps on Market to 36.1%.

    Android App Store Platforms

    Growing competition in Android Market urges the developers to seek foralternative app distribution channels.

    Currently these distribution channels can be classified into two categories:

    1. Aggregators which only provide app information and usually just link tothe Android Market. They have no direct business relation with the appdevelopers

    2. Independent app stores with developer submission and app promotionfunctions. They have a business relation with the developer submittingapps onto their stores

    There are stores which combine both roles. They display Android apps collectedfrom the Android Market Place and allow developers to submit their appsdirectly to their store.

    Aggregators concentrate on tracking original Android Market content and aim toprovide better app discoverability and search functions, including exclusive appreviews, recommendations, user communities and variety of other services.

    Their re-distributed apps number ranges from 67 thousands to 320 thousands.The numbers include inactive apps which have been submitted to the Androidmarket once but are being deleted or replaced by a new version afterwards.

    There are nearly 30 independent app stores which stores and sell Android apps.12 of them are full-catalog stores, which also provide apps for multiple platforms.All others specialize in Android apps. Other stores concentrate only on Androidtablet apps. They are not shown in the graph.

    Independent app stores try to attract developers by offering additional reach fortheir apps, allow advanced on-platform marketing campaigns and promotionsupport.

    Android Market key metrics overview

    Android Market remains the fastest growing app store. In May it maintained asteady 2.6% growth rate over the past few months and adds more apps thanmany other stores put together.

    As of the end of May it features 216,018 apps, 36.1% of which are paid 2.

    In May 29,000 new applications were submitted to the Android Market, just likea month ago. However net additions were lower. The actual number of activeapps in store grew by 15,000 (in April 17,000), however this time the share of paid apps added was 33%, whereas in April the net new adds featured 42% of

    paid apps.

    2 App numbers have been revised since the last volume of Android Market Monitor. All in-activeAndroid apps have been eliminated.

    Games, Entertainment and Tools apps are the three categories that generated 48%of all downloads so far, however average downloads per app are significantly

    higher in minor categories, such as Weather or Communication.

    In addition, the average selling price dropped again by 3% back to US$3.15. Muchmore significant changes can be evidenced within categories, for example in MayFinance apps are 11% cheaper, whereas Health& Fitness cost 22% more than inApril.
