Andy Warhol Biography Born Andy Warhola in 1928, the artist left his birth place of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1945 to study pictorial design before moving to New York. There, Warhol became a commercial artist and contributed illustrations to Vogue, The New Yorker and Harper’s Bazaar. As his career developed, Warhol became increasingly concerned with exploring the divide between commercial art and fine art. Through the 1960s Warhol appropriated images from popular culture into his artworks, elevating the everyday into high art: a Campbell’s soup can, a Coca-Cola bottle, a Brillo box. Warhol’s New York studio ‘The Factory’ became the centre of the New York underground scene while the artist quickly became an international star. Warhol died in 1987, but his legacy continues to live on today through artists as diverse as Damien Hirst and Banksy. Selected Resources Paul Alexander.
