Goal of the SLP

• The purpose of our Service Learning Project is to educate on mosquito borne illnesses by providing symptoms to look for, ways to prevent getting bitten, and inexpensive home remedies that can be utilized.

• We hope that this educational material will increase awareness of these diseases and that there will be fewer incidences in the future.

Healthy People 2020

• “Increase the proportion of local health departments that have established culturally appropriate and linguistically competent community health promotion and disease prevention programs.” – ECBP 11.

• If more clinics and health programs have the knowledge and resources to implement the necessary precautions and treatment, it is possible that the incidences of mosquito borne illnesses will decrease.

Implementation

• We wish to implement this project by handing out the brochures at the clinics and health fair. By educating the population, more people will be aware of the serious side effects of mosquito borne illnesses and will know when to get help.

• Awareness is key!

Dengue FeverORIGIN

• Possible theory that it originated in Asian forests in an infectious cycle involving primates and mosquitos.

• Jumped to humans in Africa or Southeast Asia between 100-800 years ago.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS• 2-7 day incubation

period.• Sudden onset of fever,

headache, retro-orbital pain, back pain, severe myalgia, anemia or hemorrhage, adenopathy, rash.

• Symptoms can last up to months if left untreated.

• Diagnosed by a CBC.

ChikungunyaORIGIN

• Likely originated in Central/East Africa where it was found to circulate in a sylvatic cycle between primates and mosquitos.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS• Incubation period of 1

week.• Virus will produce high

fevers, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and severe joint pain usually found in the wrists and ankles.

• Symptoms can last up to months if left untreated.

• Diagnosed by a CBC.

Prevention• Avoid mosquitoes and still standing water. • Insect repellants (wipes or spray) that contain

DEET.– http://www.cdc.gov/westnile/faq/repellent.html

TreatmentDENGUE FEVER

• Not vaccine preventable.

• Treatment is supportive.

• Bed rest, IV fluids, BP monitoring, electrolyte replacement, possible blood transfusion to replace fluid loss.

CHIKUNGUNYA

• Not vaccine preventable.

• Treatment is supportive.

• Relieving symptoms is the biggest priority: use analgesics and antipyretics to alleviate joint pain, replace fluids.

Home RemediesCITRONELLA & LEMONGRASS

SPRAY

• Citronella oil is one of the most effective, natural repellants in the world.

• Lemongrass acts an insecticide due to the naturally occurring antimicrobial effects.

MOSQUITO TRAPS• The trap uses CO2 to

attract mosquitoes into a soda bottle where they cannot escape.
