CONVERSATION
Sells like hot cakes !!!
Lindsay Let's get started. Today we're deciding which items will be the key products that we
are going to promote this quarter. Any ideas ?
Michelle I think we can keep promoting our item PUR038. It sells like hot cakes! We can make it
hotter in the marketplace.
Max I don't think that's a good idea. We still have a lot of competitive items on standby.
There are good products, too. Since PUR038 sells like hot cakes, it can speak for itself.
We can put our effort into other products such as our cutting board series.
Sam I agree. The cutting boards have been sought-after on the market recently. We are
supposed to plan a big promotion for our CB series.
Lindsay That's a good point, Sam. Any objection ? If not, then CB series will be our key items
this quarter. That's all for today's meeting.
Explanation :
Sell like hot cakes - to be bought quickly and in large numbers
Example : His new video game is apparently selling like hot cakes.

Tuesday ARTICLE
President Obama to visit Hiroshima On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama will become the first American president to visit the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The visit is a huge event for both the USA and Japan. Hiroshima is the first city in the world to suffer from atomic weapons. The bomb that U.S. forces dropped on the city in August of 1945 killed an estimated 140,000 in that year. Many historians say it helped bring an end to the Second World War. Others say it should never have happened. President Obama said his visit is to focus on the future. An advisor to the president said Mr Obama would not apologise for the bombing. The advisor said Obama, "will offer a forward-looking vision" that focuses on the shared future of the USA and Japan. Barack Obama hinted in 2009 that he would one day like to visit Hiroshima. His trip to the city has got many people in Japan and the USA talking about the bombs that fell on Hiroshima, and later Nagasaki, which killed so many people. Mr Obama said his visit
would be a time to think about how horrible war is and to remember the terrible loss of life. He said he hoped his time in Hiroshima would remind people that war causes unnecessary death and that nuclear weapons should never be used again. He said: "Part of my goal is to recognise that innocent people caught in war can suffer tremendously." He added: "And that's not just the thing of the past. That is happening today in many parts of the world."

Thursday DEBATE
BRIBERY IS SOMETIMES ACCEPTABLE Corruption is operationally defined as the misuse of entrusted power for private gain. Facilitation payments, where a bribe is paid to receive preferential treatment for something that the receiver is required to do by law (e.g. an official processing a license application), constitute "according to rule" corruption. Corruption "against the rule", on the other hand, is a bribe paid to obtain services the receiver is prohibited from providing (e.g. a policeman ignoring a crime or favourable marking of a student’s examination paper).
Pros: People are often made to give bribes to officials because of unfavourable economic, social or bureaucratic conditions. Officials may refuse to serve clients unless they are paid. For example in Delhi police officers regularly take lunch without paying and more senior officers take 10,000 each month to allow the restaurant to stay open late.
Cons: The position of civil society plays a key role in reducing corruption. Its action in taking a moral stand against corrupted officials is an important precondition for effective anticorruption policy. Hence, citizens who put up with the necessity to give a bribe become a part of the problem. It is not just the case of public officials abusing their positions, but of people who are tempted to choose the easiest way out. Recent developments in India show how quickly expectations can change once people begin to make a stand. WORD CHECK UP

Friday BUSINESS IDIOM FOCUS
Read and be familiar with the Business Idiom below and use them in
your conversation.
Why study idioms?
One of the keys to speaking like a native is the ability to use and understand
casual expressions, or idioms.
Stick Out One's Neck
How come they're asking me to act as their guide through the jungle?
Evidently they think you're the only one who can lead them to the lost temple.
That jungle has danger lurking around every corner.
Why should I stick my neck out for them? They didn't pay me for my services.
They know that you would be taking a great risk and could possibly get hurt, but you're
the only one with enough knowledge to take them to their destination. I'm sure you'll be
amply rewarded.
All Thumbs
Hey Bea. Can you help me out ? I don't seem to be able to button up the back of my dress.
Sure. Let's see if I can do it for you.
I guess I'm all thumbs because I'm so nervous. I'm already late for my date.
Well, I suppose that being so nervous would make you clumsy and awkward. But don't
worry. I'm sure your date will wait.
Not Have a Leg to Stand On
Tom maintains that the firm owes him some back wages for having worked overtime.
However, he won't have a leg to stand on unless he can prove that he put in all those
extra hours. He doesn't stand a chance of getting his moneywithout a strong foundation
of facts to support his position.
Get Off Someone's Back
Hey, John. I'm bored. Come on, let's go out and do something.
Sorry, I'm right in the middle of studying for a physics exam. I won't be able to make it
tonight.
You've been studying for a long time. Why don't you take a break ? Come on! Let's go !
Forget studying for a while !
Look! Get off my back! I can't go anywhere!
OK. I'll stop bothering you only if you promise to let me know the minute you're
finished.
Going under the knife
When critics and celebrity observers criticized Heidi Montag for undergoing ten plastic
surgery procedures in one operation, she answered back that going under the knife is
only a medical operation that doesn't invo

Wow ! What a great set of drums!
Yeah, they're great, but I can't play on them when my folks are at home. They say I drive
them up a wall with all the loud banging.
I get the same thing at home. My folks tell me that I annoy them and get them really
angry whenever I turn up the volume on my stereo.
