AN OLD COUNTRY HAMLET…BY THE SEASIDE

Anglet has been, for centuries, a modest area set between the Atlantic coastline and the unstable Adour river; a small corner between the river and the ocean. Both in contact with the Basque country and Gascony, Anglet formerly existed in the shadow of its powerful military and commercial neighbour, Bayonne. For a long time, Anglet consisted of a cluster of rural hamlets with its farmers and market gardeners feeding and watering its neighbour; with the fields and vines producing the light sandy wine; its washerwomen are famous. The rural landscape served as scenery, for the town dwellers’ Sunday walks, with their open air cafés and shaded pathways. There are also the beaches, the “Chambres d’Amour”. The sea also is fishing, the amazing and grandiose sight of La Barre and the Adour and it even saw the plundering of wrecked ships.

A DISCREET HISTORY Anglet remains apart from documented history, that of famous personalities and important events; it is not mentioned with some illustrious visitors such as Napoleon 1st or Josephine, or the great soldiers like Wellington who lay siege to Bayonne. Another Emperor, Napoleon III took an interest in Anglet, at his Convent of Refuge and developed its magnificent pine forests. He made a gift of 90.000 gold French francs for the creation of the forest of Chiberta by the planting of 300 hectares (approx. 741 acres) of Pines. The seeding of the dunes, following the example of what had been done in the Landes, gave birth to a landscape that has become, some years later, one of the town’s important assets for tourism.

Once upon a time there was Anglet...

HISTORY

THE BOOM OFTHE SECOND EMPIRE

The Chambre d’Amour site which was made fashionable in romantic literature is one of the places where the Imperial couple used to go for walks, when staying

at Biarritz. Following in their footsteps, the tourists began to visit, so much so, that a bath establishment was founded in 1884 and a chapel was built by the district’s inhabitants with the help of the Empress Eugenie.

It was through the launching of Biarritz as a seaside resort that Anglet experienced a radical change in its coastal area which offered virgin land, ready for the leisure facilities that were likely to encourage a quality international clientele. This same era heralded the arrival of the motor car and aeroplane. Aristocratic homes were built around the Chiberta Lake, with the nearby golf course, the race course of La Barre and the Baths of the Chambre d’Amour, built in the pure Art Deco style and the magnificent seawater swimming pool.

A SCATTERED HERITAGE …BUT WELL PRESERVED

As the years go by, things have changed. Anglet, a small town with 5,700 inhabitants in 1901, has 40,000 inhabitants today. It has, little by little, become a large town. Its social structure and landscape have been modified under pressure from property development, the opening up of tourism to everybody, the surfing wave and the regular increase in population attracted by the quality of life. Important industrial companies, as well as the large shopping centres, have established themselves here. Anglet’s architectural heritage is seen today within a totally changed context. Scattered, because of its size, Anglet remains interesting for more than just its name, but in particular for the memory of the inhabitants of a town which wishes to live as a “green town” and which bears traces of a still visible past in its architecture, place names or The “Pignada”…

Just by strolling around, between the Chambre d’Amour, Chiberta or Saint-Jean, the visitor can discover this town of Anglet made up of several districts of which a large part of whose heritage is shown in the holiday style architecture of the 19th and 20th century, having been born with the arrival of the Basque Coast destination.

This beach is located at the foot of the majestic Cap Saint Martin cliff with its famous lighthouse. The base of the cliff is honeycombed with numerous caves. Unfortunately access to them is prohibited for safety reasons. This beach hosts a holiday center built as a ship : Belambra.

Surf spot

Surfing is widely practiced due to the protection of the cliff against the southerly wind. It also acts as a natural breakwater with the waves often being smaller than in the north of Anglet. Take note that some rocks stand out the sand at the northern edge of the beach.

'Whether you’re with family or friends, like to have some space to yourself or enjoy the buzz of the crowd, Anglet’s many beaches really fit the bill for everyone – none more so than the surfers from all walks of life who come in ever-increasing numbers to enjoy the local waves. The variety and quality of sandbars make it a very special place to surf that’s suited to all abilities.’

PETITE CHAMBRE D'AMOUR BEACH

Beaches and Surfing...

BATHING

A small beach set between two jetties. It is particularly very crowded at low tide, as it is completely covered at high tide. It is one of Anglet two “urban” beaches as it is located in the heart of the Chambre d’Amour district.

Surf spot

The Anglet Surf Club is based at this beach. The numerous surfers, bodyboarders and bodysurfers there appreciate the spot whatever the tide.

The last beach in the Chambre d’Amour district, it has all the characteristics of an “urban” beach. Surrounded by more than forty restaurant bars, it is visited throughout the year. The upper beach is equipped with beach volleyball pitches making it unique for practicing this sport. Finally, as night falls you can discover all the beauty of the ocean, a powerful illumination allowing you to appreciate the “Wave Show”.

Surf spot

This beach offers a busy surfing area. It is best at low tide as high tide covers the entire beach and creates a substantial backwash. The birthplace of Surfing in Anglet, this location plays host to a wide range of competitions, including the ‘Night Surfing’ and ‘Pro Anglet’, a World Surf League QS 1,500 event (points count towards qualification for the WSL Men’s Championship Tour and Women’s Championship Tour).

CLUB BEACH

SABLES D’OR BEACH

This beach, like its neighbour, is clearly a beach for the young. During the months of July and August, it plays host to the "Bibliothèque des Plages" library which boasts a large selection of books and magazines, as well as hosting special events. The landscaped areas alongside are much appreciated and favorable for practicing kite flying and ball sports. This beach marks the transition between the

Chambre d’Amour urban beaches and the more “natural” beaches of North Anglet.

Surf spot

The Corsaires spot is, like its neighbour, Marinella, protected by long rocky groynes. These “sea walls” help different sand banks to form and offer good waves.

Marinella beach is the most cosmopolitan beach in Anglet. Actually, this long beach, bordered with sea walls has very different visitors. Families, children and surfers – both beginners and experienced come naturally to this privileged area. There is one beach club and two surf schools. A restaurant is located at the entrance, on the promenade, opposite the Lifeguard Station.

Surf spot

Marinella is a relatively easy spot and is visited by numerous surfers. Every year, this beach hosts a magnificent fireworks and sound and light display.

OCEAN BEACH

The Madrague is most likely one of the most beautiful beaches in Anglet, and the Petite Madrague is one of the most trendy. This large expanse of fine sand welcomes an eclectic clientele. Young, families and the not so young can be seen there. The beach surroundings made of wide landscaped areas that turn this spot into one of most attractive nature setting where the young can practice their football and kite flying.

Surf spot

The Madrague is a spot with several good sand banks. A fashionable beach that also attracts the surfers and its numerous crests allow its popularity to be extended.

Ocean beach is a land of contrasts. The blockhouse, a reminder of the last war, marks the link between the verdant beauty of the Chiberta golf course and the large expanse of white sand. It is one of the most “wild” of Anglet beaches. Its entrance is topped off with a gangway providing a view that is unique on the Anglet coast. A feeling of freedom unfolds here. Moreover, there are, as well as on its neighbour – The Dunes – Nudist lovers, even though it is prohibited.

Surf spot

The Ocean and the Dunes form the same beach break. It is quite common to park one’s car in one of the beach parking areas and to finish in the waves on the other beach. Its tubular crests, comparable to those of its more publicized sister – the Cavaliers – are often less visited.

Recognized throughout the world for its powerful waves, this beach holds numerous professional surfing competitions. This long sandy beach is edged to the North by the long Barre sea wall. It is dominated by many landscaped areas but above all by the Atlanthal Thalassotherapy Spa. Concrete promenades intertwine long grassy strips and are visited by many families. At the edge of the golf course, a children’s play area ensures year round visits to this beach.

Surf spot

When a visitor speaks about the places at Anglet, Cavaliers beach is quoted as a reference. In fact, its tubular waves and also the number of professional competitions have made it a world wide known place. This is Anglet's most popular surf spot, but the number of crests and the “savoir-vivre” overcomes any problems for the visiting surfers.

Bordering the famous Chiberta Golf Course, this popular surfing beach is probably the wildest on our coast. Its unique entrance via a subway passage and absence of proper parking makes it less popular. It should be noted that contrary to its prohibition there are many nudists here.

The most Northerly located beach, La Barre is noted for its proximity to the mouth of the Adour river where all types of ships can be seen. It is also Anglet smallest beach. Very enclosed between two long groynes, it is the most peaceful beach on the coast. Like the Ocean beach, it bears the marks of the Occupation with blockhouses arranged in terraces adorning a very suitable prome-nade. At the edge of the beach, an ice rink and lakes make this place unique among its kind and above all currently being fully renovated – an area dedicated to urban sliding activities but above all a big green environment project are based there since 2007.

Surf spot

Ever since the first Surfing World Champion-ships were held in 1968, this small beach is a world-famous place. Today, the waves are not so present due to the breakwaters that surround it and make it a protected spot on days with strong swells.

The beaches are a place of freedom, however, for the good of everyone, some rules must be respected.

The bathing area is supervised and restricted: two blue flags limit the area reserved for bathing.Surfing is strictly prohibited, but bodyboardsare tolerated. The surfing area is separate tothe side and is indicated by a green pennant with a red disk. There is no nudist beach at Anglet.Dogs are not allowed on the beaches.

The coastline around Anglet is a fragile environment which suffers from erosion from the natural forces of waves, wind and stormy weather. The council has been working to combat this erosion for many years, reshaping the beach, planting grass on remaining dunes and implementing sand replenishment in the shallow

nearshore zone with a view to reducing erosion. This helps ensure bathers’ safety, safeguards wave patterns that are suitable for surfing and protects the beauty of the local landscape.

THE MOST COMMON DANGERSARE THE FOLLOWING:

THE BAINES Holes filled with water with thetidal changes which cause off shore currents. If you are caught in a “baïne”, do not fight against the current but raise an arm to alertthe lifeguards.

BREAKWATERS Special Ocean viewing points;the breakwaters are nevertheless dangerous. The rocks are not stable and a strong off shore current runs beside these structures. If you are caught in such a current, do not panic, just raise an arm to alert the lifeguards.

THE SHORE BREAK This is a name used for the shore wave which often forms at high tide. It is dangerous as it breaks in shallow water and can cause cervical injuries.

THE BEACH WALK

Departure/Arrival Petite Chambre d'Amour Beach/La Barre Beach

A 4.5 km walk on the seafront alongside the 11 Anglet beaches, from the Chambre d’Amour to La Barre. You will discover an exceptional location: on one side the ocean and a coastline of fine sand on the other; protected landscaped areas; the magnificent Chiberta golf course and the Atlanthal thalassotherapy center. To the South, when the weather is clear, a view of the Pyrenees mountains.

Long, long ago, Laorens, a poor orphan, and Saubade, the daughter of a rich planter, were together, despite her father’s opposition, in a cave facing some huge waves. There, they were making an oath to love each other until death. It was a lovely day, the storm was howling in the Gulf of Gascony and the sea pushed by the off shore wind rapidly grew larger than normal and carried away the lovers. The fatal grotto whichstill attracts lovers and the curious was called the Chambre d’Amour.

THE CLIFF WALK

(approx. 600m) Esplanade Yves Brunaud (Bld de la Mer)/Allée Paul Prieto/Chambre d’Amour, the grotto

From the top of the cliff, in fine weather, looking North, you can see not only the Anglet coastline but also the large beaches of the Landes. The Cap Saint- Martin, dominated by the lighthouse which was erected in 1832, marks the boundary between Anglet and Biarritz. At the foot of the cliff, do not miss pausing in front of the famous Chambre d’Amour grotto and discover its beautiful Legend which has given our town its reputation. To extend your walk along the coastline… on foot, rejoin the seafront promenade; on a bicycle, follow the Boulevard des Plages.

The sporting side of Anglet does not neglect going to the Fête, a joyous tradition between the Adour and Pyrenees. These occasions do not miss out on extending the evenings between fireworks, concerts, folkloric dancing and singing. As to the surroundings, from the Chambre d’Amour to the Sables d’Or, they lend themselves well to this healthy exuberance, and finally are witnesses to a feeling of well being.
