O chemare la înviorare spirituală:

Biserica,

Centrul Vieţii Noastre Spirituale

De prea multe ori, cu trecerea timpului, biserica

este luată drept ceea ce nu este și nici nu poate fi. Unii o

consideră o afacere, alții un centru național, alții cultu-

ral, alții club, alții agenție socială, alții pur și simplu o

clădire. Chiar dacă, în realitate, unele preocupari ale Bi-

sericii lui Hristos întretaie astfel de aspecte, Biserica tre-

buie să rămână ceea ce Hristos a intenționat ca ea să fie:

templu de sfințire a omului, locaș al Duhului Sfânt, loc

sacru, trup și însăși prezența lui Hristos.

Fără Biserică, omul nu își găsește împlinirea,

sensul și menirea sa. Se poate spune că într-o oarecare

măsură, biserica dorește a fi un mic rai pe pământ, unde

dorim să pre-gustăm Cerul. Aici trăim în armonie cu noi

înșine, cu cei ce împărtășesc aceeași credință și cu socie-

tatea din jurul nostru. Deși Domnul este izvorul

sfințeniei ei și noi o sfințim prin: rugăciune, fapte bune

și pilda de vieţuire bine plăcută lui Dumnezeu. Cu toate

că activează în lume, Biserica nu este din lume.

În lume fiind, activitatea ei are desigur și un as-

pect managerial, pentru că ea trebuie să fie chivernisită

cu atenţie şi cu iubire de Dumnezeu și de om. Astfel,

consiliul parohial, reuniunea femeilor sau asociațiile bi-

sericii lucrează cu regularitatea unui business, dar - deși

avem o contabilitate - noi nu ne confundăm lucrarea

sfințitoare cu lumea afacerilor, așa cum nici propria

noastră familia, desi îşi chiverniseşte agoniseala, nu este

firesc să fie privită ca o “afacere”. Nici club national nu

este Biserica, deoarece in ea trebuie sa-si gaseasc locul

“toate neamurile,” adica toti copiii lui Dumnezeu. Dar,

in acelasi timp, Biserica nu exclude aspectul național, ci

îl include, deoarece ea sfințește cultura și națiunea; ori-

care ar fi ele. Biserica nu este nici doar un club social,

deoarece toată lucrarea ei trebuie să fie permeată de Du-

hul Sfânt, valorile lui Dumnezeu și de prezența

sfințitoare a lui Hristos. În acest sens, noi trebuie sa

evităm, în biserică, manifestări care nu sunt potrivite cu

învățătura creştină. Iar dacă cineva are sentimentul că

biserica este o clădire ca oricare alta, asta înseamnă că

acela neagă prezența sfințitoare a lui Dumnezeu, care

An invitation to spiritual renewal:

The Church,

Center of Our Spiritual Life

As time passes, we notice that by far too many

times the church is being regarded for what she is not.

Some see it as a business, others as a national center,

others a cultural association or a club, others a social

agency and others merely a building. Even if in reality

some of the activities of the church may intersect such

aspects, the Church must remain what Christ intended her

to be: a temple of salvation, a locus of the Holy Spirit, a

sacred place, the body and presence of Christ.

Without the Church, man cannot find his

fulfillment, meaning and purpose in the world. One can

say that to a certain extent the church is a small heaven on

earth, where we foretaste the Heavens. Here we live in

harmony with ourselves, with those who share in the same

belief and with the society. Though the Lord is the source

of all holiness, we also sanctify her by our prayers, good

deeds and a righteous living that is pleasing to God. Thus,

though in the world, the Church is not from the world.

Certainly, as a divine establishment that functions

in the world, the Church does have a managerial aspect

called stewardship and must be cared for with love and

correctness. Thus, the parish council, the ladies auxiliary

and the associations within her all work with the

regularity of a business. However, though we use these

means, we do not lose sight of our sanctifying purpose.

One could compare this with the family where we also

keep track of our finances, but the family should not be a

mere “business”. Neither is the church a national club, for

in it must be room for all nations, for all God’s children.

At the same time, the Church does not exclude the

national aspect, but rather includes it, for the Church

sanctifies the culture and nation, regardless. Nor is the

Church a social club, for all her work must be permeated

by the Holy Spirit, God’s values and the sanctifying

presence of Christ. For this reason, in church, we must

avoid manifestations that are not in harmony with the

Christian teaching. Likewise, if anyone has the feeling

that the church is just a building like all others, his belief

betrays a denial of God’s sanctifying power.

Great Lent Notes

In the Orthodox Church the Great Lent begins always on

Monday. It is marked by the Forgiveness Sunday, when

we make peace with God and one-another. On Monday,

February 19, we enter the 40 days fast, when we turn to

God for renewal and give up animal foods. Lent is a

means of personal physical and spiritual change. Lets’

make it efficient and useful. It helps our wellbeing. Let’s

rededicate ourselves to God! Come to the evening

services! Confess your sins! Receive the Body of Christ!

Above all, change your life for the better. By the way, be

generous to give alms to the poor!

Fish Fry – Help Us Keep this Good

Tradition

On Friday, February 16, our church will begin again a

series of Friday evening Fish Fries. For this we need

volunteers to help us on Thursday to get ready and on

Fridays to fry, serve and do all it takes to make it work.

We pride in our team’s good work and hope YOU will

come to help.

We especially invite our youth to help us with their energy

and smile! If you plan to come, please call our office and

inquire about the specifics. Thank you!

serie de vineri cu pește prăjit. De aceea avem nevoie de

să primim și să servim oaspeții, apoi să facem curățenie.

Ne mândrim cu munca bună a echipei noastre și sperăm că

veți veni să ajutați.

Îi invităm în special pe tinerii noștri să ne ajute cu energia

și zâmbetul! Dacă intenționați să veniți, vă rugăm să sunați

la biroul nostru și să anunțați la ce departament doriți să

lucrați. Mulțumim!

este pretutindeni, dar mai ales în templul pe care l-a

sfinţit cu scump sângele lui Hristos. Între zidurile

Bisericii este rugăciune şi atâta lucrare a Duhului, încât

Biserica trebuie văzută ca însăşi prezenţa lui Hristos pe

pământ.

În biserică, noi suntem hrăniţi cu Cuvântul lui

Dumnezeu şi cu Sfintele şi mântuitoarele Taine. Bise-

rica sfinţeşte viaţa omului de la început până în veşni-

cie. Ea ne formează caracterul după chipul Fiului lui

Dumnezeu, întăreşte pe cei vârstnici şi îi creşte pe co-

pii. Fără biserică, copiii sunt lipsiți de un mediu forma-

tiv și sfințitor. Cuvintele mele sunt insuficiente pentru

a exprima folosul mântuitor al aducerii copiilor la bise-

rică. Din păcate, mulți părinţi se lasă prinşi în goana

vieţii şi îşi lasă pruncii să crească la voia întâmplării,

până când este prea târziu pentru a-i mai putea modela

şi îndrepta. Consecinţele pot fi, în unele cazuri, grave.

Biserica tămăduieşte pe cei bolnavi, întăreşte omul în

vremea necazului şi ne poate scoate chiar şi din pânte-

cele iadului, prin puterea lui Hristos şi prin rugăciunile

sfinţilor.

Pentru astfel de raţiuni, îndemnăm pe toţi

creştinii ortodocşi să vină la biserică. Aici omul susține

cu jertfele sale nu doar o afacere, nici o simplă zidire,

nici un club social sau național, ci însăși lucrarea de

mântuire a lui Hristos, adică Biserica Sa. Numai ea ne

oferă continuitate – de la naștere și Botez – până în

veşnicie. La acest început de an, fac un apel călduros şi

părintesc către toţi cei ce iubesc pe Dumnezeu, să

considere acest an ca pe un an de trezire şi înviorare

spirituală.

Ce inseamnă înviorare spirituală? Să ne re-

dăruim pe noi înşine şi familia noastră rugăciunii zilni-

ce; deci, să reînnoim legatura personală cu Hristos. Să

ne înscriem în biserica (parohia locală) ca membri acti-

vi. Să ne schimbăm viaţa şi să primim Sfintele Taine

(Spovedanie, Împartașanie, Maslu), să facem fapte bu-

ne. Dumnezeu îl ajută pe cel ce crede şi îl binecuvin-

tează. Eşti bolnav? Vino la biserică sau cheamă pe slu-

jitorii ei! Ești dezamăgit de viaţă? Mărturiseşte-ţi

durerea lui Hristos, înaintea preotului, şi Hristos o va

face uşoară! Ai suferit o pierdere? Credinţa o va prefa-

ce în câştig spiritual şi te va întări. Împreună, aici, în

casa Domnului - când o înţelegem aşa cum se cuvine -

prin harul Său, atât bucuriile cât şi durerile noastre de-

vin medicament spiritual. Hristos caută și binecuvin-

tează pe tot omul ce vine in lume si vrea ca toți să se

mântuiască. Într-o astfel de Biserică aș dori să vă văd

pe fiecare și pe toți în acest an de trezire spirituală!

For if God is all over, he is even more present in the

temple that was sanctified by the very Blood of Christ.

Within church walls there is so much prayer and action of

the Holy Spirit that the Church is to be seen as the very

presence of Christ on earth.

In the Church we are being fed with the Word of

God and with His holy and saving Mysteries. The Church

sanctifies man’s life from the beginning to eternity. She

models our character according to the image of the Son of

God, strengthens the aged and rears the young. Without the

Church, the children are deprived of a truly formative and

sanctifying environment. My words are insufficient to

contain how beneficial is for the children their presence in

church. Sadly, too many parents allow themselves to be

caught in the web of material life and let the children grow

at random, until it is too late to help them. In some cases

the consequences could be very serious. The Church heals

the sick, gives us strength in trials and – by the prayers of

the saints – can rescue us even from the depth of hades.

For such reasons, I urge all Orthodox Christians to

come to the church. By our own efforts, here, we sustain

not only a business, a simple building, a social or national

club, but the very salvific work of Christ, that is His

Church. Only the Church offers us continuity from birth

and baptism to the eternity. At this beginning of a new

year I am calling all those who love God to embark on a

new awakening and take this opportunity for a spiritual

renewal. What does this mean?

A spiritual renewal means to rededicate ourselves

to daily prayer; to refresh our personal relationship with

Christ. Let us enroll ourselves in the local parish as living

and active members. Let us change our life, depart from

sins and receive the Holy Sacraments, (especially

Confession, Communion and Unction), increasing our

good deeds. God helps he who believes and blesses him.

Are you sick? Come to church or call her servants! Are

you hurt? Confess your hurt to Christ before the priest and

Christ will make it lighter. Have you suffered a loss? Your

faith may turn it into a gain and you will become stronger!

This way, here in the heart of the Church, when we truly

understand the Church for what it truly is, God turns our

joys and sorrows into spiritual medication. For He seeks

and blesses every man who comes into the world and

wants His salvation. In such a Church, I look forward to

see each and every one of you this year!

wildest parties and the greatest deal for your money.

None of them advertise that you’ll be doing anything

meaningful. Period. Guaranteed.

Welcome OCMC/OCF Spring Break Albania; the best

alternative to everything else out there. Sign up for a

week in which you will see a nation that has risen

from the ashes of atheism. A week where you will

see what it means to desire Christ first through your

interactions with the youth, the youth leaders, the

faithful and the church leadership.

Prima întâlnire a avut loc vineri, 26 ianuarie. Întâlnirile

noastre sunt programate la fiecare două săptămâni,

vinerea, la ora 6:30 pm, în sala AROY. Următoarea

întâlnire va fi, Vineri, 9 februarie.

La prima întâlnire, cei prezenți s-au decis la ce ar dori să

lucreze. Așa că vom avea o varietate de opțiuni. Dacă

doriți să învățați cum să vă faceți o ie, cum să împletiți,

croșetați sau să folosiți o mașină de cusut, sunteți așteptați

cu drag la șezătoarea noastră.

Așteptăm pe toți care doresc să fie parte a acestei noi

organizații. Nu avem o taxă de membrie, dar vom face

lucruri pe care le vom vinde cu diferite ocazii iar banii

obținuți vor fi donați bisericii. Copiii interesați sunt de

asemenea bine-veniți!

A group of ladies of our parish that would like to learn

how or work hand made things (i.e., kneeting, hand

stiching, crocheting, etc.) will meet in the AROY

room, every other Friday, beginning with 6:30 pm.

The next meeting is on Friday, February 9th.

At the first meeting, the ladies present decided to do

different hand work. So, there will be a wide variety of

options. If you decide to join our group, please bring

the necessary material for whatever you would like to

do.

We are looking to see that many ladies and young girls

will join our group (”ACUL” - ”the NEEDLE”). There

is no membership fee, but we decided to do work that

can be sold at different events and the proceeds to be

donated to the church. Children are also welcome!

We are glad to hear that father Dimitri Vincent of

accident that almost left him paralized. May the Lord

Our church is blessed to have lots of educated

professionals, in all fields: doctors, engineers, teachers,

professors, lawyers, business people, medical

professionals, IT specialists, artists and skilled and

diligent workers.

All these talents and qualities, make a truly impressive

bouquet with a huge potential for growth. We encourage

all our members to express themselves and come to

contribute with their talents to the freshness of Christ’s

Holy Church. With His blessing, together, we could do

wonders.

Behind them, come a great lot of young, future

professionals who are now in universities and colleges.

KITCHEN EQUIPMENT

NEEDS

Our social hall kitchen is in

need of a new dishwasher and new

stoves unit.

Our kitchen equipment is 30+

years of functionability. We are

grateful that they lasted for so long,

but now it is the time to have them

replaced. If each member (not

family!) donates at least $50, we will be able to cover the

costs to purchase and install the equipment. Think of these

needs as they are in your own home; how many times in

30 years have you changed any of the appliances? Lets

make a common effort to renew the kitchen and make it

functionable again, as we all need it at some point!

foarte mulțumiți că a ținut atât de mult, dar acum a venit

timpul să fie înlocuite. Dacă fiecare membru (nu familie!)

donează cel puțin $50, vom putea să acoperim costurile

pentru achiziționarea și instalarea acestor unități. Gândiți-

vă la aceste nevoi ca la propria dvs. casă; de câte ori în 30

de ani ați schimbat aparatele de gătit sau alte lucruri nece-

sare în bucătărie? Haideți să facem un efort comun pentru

a reînnoi bucătăria și pentru a o face din nou funcțională,

pentru că, la un moment dat, toți avem nevoie de ea!

Parish Assembly

February 4

As we announced, our annual meeting will be Sunday

February 4, after the Divine services in the parish

hall. We will offer a free luncheon to all. Then the

Priest, Parish Council and the parish organizations

will present their reports. We will also discuss future

plans. This is a time for anyone who wants to see a

change to come and speak up. The nominating

committee is seeking new members for the parish

Council. Interested to serve? Please contact one of the

Nominating Committee members, Al Haak, Viorel

Oancea, Gus Secue.

Imediatey after the Parish Assembly, the new

council will have the elections of officers.

Remember, the parish is only as good as her members

(That is: YOU!)
