In the originalAnimal Crossing,Kapp'ntook passengersacrossthe water in a boat, but now he'straded in his paddlefor a gaspedal.

    The NameGame

Next, Kapp'nwill askfor your name. You'll haveto live with this namefor the restofyour Animal Crossinglife, sodon't pick oneyou'll regret! After you tell him your name,he'll give you one lastchanceto changeit beforesavingit.

    Burlyor cute?

Kapp'nwill askwhether you areburly orcute.Thiswill decidewhether you areaboy (burly) or girl (cute).

    "

  • Gender Confusion?

You'll get one last chance to confirm your

gender. Watch what happens if you

    change you mimi-you'll practically give

    poor Kapp'n a heart attack!

    Name That Town

. (fJfuuI.'~C,~.~. ~'7- ~Next you will be asked to name your

town. Again, be sure it's something you

can live with, because you won't be able

    to change it later on.

    How Do I Look?

    Are You a Beach Bum?

Kapp'n will ask you what you favorite part

of town is: the beach, town hall, shop-

ping, the border or the museum. Your

answer will determine where you live.

    "...

    Got Moneyfor the Fare?

Did you forget to bring cab fare? Don't

    worry-Kapp'n is pretty easygoing and

might let it slide if you answer a few

    more questions.

A lot of factors can alter your appearance. If you gave Kapp'n mixed signals about your gender, you

might end up as a boy with girlish eyes, or vice versa. Or if you answered all the questions rudely, you

might end up with a permanent scowl. There are dozens of possible outcomes depending on how you

handled your conversation with Kapp'n. Below are just a few examples of the different looks for

    boys and girls.

The TownHallAfter your long conversation with Kapp'n, you will finally arrive in town. Your first stop is

the town hall, where you will sort out your living arrangements. Talk to reIly-she'll ask if

you need any help. If you let her know that you have just moved in, she will tell you how

Tom Nook has been waiting for your arrival and that there is a modest home waiting for you

to move into. She'll even give you a town map that shows the location of your new home-take a stroll across town and check it out!

  • The wing of the museum devoted to

aquatic creatures consists of two rooms-the front room is pretty standard and con-

tains two large fish tanks, and the backroom is like a scene from the depths of

the ocean, giving you total immersioninto an underwater world. For a complete

    list of aquaticcreaturesseepage145.

Insects are displayed in two rooms. One is

set in a forest atmosphere, and the otheris more of a tropical theme. Be warned-

it's kind of creepy seeing all the bugs

    roaming freely without being enclosed.

    Fora completelist of insects,seepage142.

Fossils are displayed piece by piece as

parts of the skeleton are completed. Onceyou've donated all the pieces, you'll be

able to see your dinosaur skeleton in allits glory. There are two rooms of fossils toexamine. For a complete list of the fossils,

    see page 148.

The paintings section of the museum may

take you a while to fill up, as paintingscan be difficult to come by. The traveling

merchant Redd usually has paintings for

sale (see pg. 41), but they are very priceyand many are fakes. Blathers, of course,

will accept only authentic paintings for

    display in the museum.

The roommate who stocks the museum with the most fish, paintings, fossils and

insects will be rewarded with the museum model-a fitting memento to commem-

orate your commitment to the arts and sciences.

Inside the museum you'll see stairs going up to a second floor-this is where the observatory is located. It

is run by Blathers's sister Celeste (who also seems to fall asleep during the day, though she won't admit it).

Chat with her; she'll let you look through the powerful telescope and observe the stars.

If you decide to do some stargazing, youcan take a look at the constellations that

have b,een created by other people in

your town, or admire the ones you creat-

ed yourself. You can also see the datethey were named and find out the best

Everyone loves trees, but sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. To make

space to move around in your town, you'll occasionally have to down a few trees withyour axe. Don't worry-you can always plant a new tree in a less-populated area of town.

If you meet up with the philosopher Pascal (the red guy shown

Joan and plant it in the ground for a day. Then dig up that turnip and feed it to

Wendell. If he gives you the turban, trade it to Saharah for the massage chair, then

trade the massage chair to Mayor Tortimer for the scallop. Whew! See page 40 to

find out when all these folks willvisit your town. '

Tom Nook is a foreign-fruit freak. He will pay big money for different fruit from anothertown, so if you go on a trip to another land, be sure to bring some back. Instead of cash-

ing the fruit in right away, though, plant some and start your own exotic-fruit orchard-

you'll soon be rolling in bells!

    The Turnip Trade

    Turnip trading (buying turnips and

reselling for a profit) is a tough racket-

you've got to know when to hold 'em,

and know when to sell 'em before they

rot. You can also try planting red turnips

and growing them yourself. The bigger

they get, the more Tom Nook will pay for

them. See page 45 for more information.

Taking part in special events and activities, such as the Acorn Festival or the Bug-Off

competition, can earn you valuable prizes (see the calendar of events for more info). Also keep an eye out for special visitors that will give you rare items. Gracie, forinstance, will give you expensive shirt patterns. To learn more about these visitors andwhen they appear, see page 40.

Another neighbor's garbage can be your

gold mine! Check out the recycling bin at

City Hall for discarded items you can resell

to Tom Nook. Another place where you canoccasionally find free stuff is the lost and

found at the main gate (tended by Booker).Finders keepers!

If you plan on visiting another town, be sure tobring someof your local fruit with you to sell("exotic" fruit alwaysgoesfor a lot), then bringsomeof the foreign products backhome andstart an orchard or sell it to TomNookfor abundle of bells.

Every now and then, you might run into a neighbor who thinks he is the best at fishing

or bug catching. In fact, he might even challenge you to a fishing or bug catching contest.

Win the contest to receive a gift. If you lose or tie, though, you will have to try again.

Neighbors will often ask you to run errands for them, like picking up medicine or retriev-
