DIRECTORS NOTES…

Since ANIMAL FARM was first published in 1945 it has been translated into severallanguages and has been read and enjoyed, studied and analyzed throughout the world.George Orwell originally titled his book, ANIMAL FARM, A FAIRY STORY, andhe said that although it was primarily a satire on the Russian Revolution, it wasintended to have a wider application. This simple story of animals and the events leading up to and following their rebellioncan be seen on many levels: our barnyard is a society or community, the time is boththe past and the present, the inhabitants are individuals whose hopes and dreams ofbuilding a better world are eventually destroyed by the corruption of power. It is a story that is as old as history, a story without end. Here the animal nature is a mirror of the human condition.

George Orwell, whose given name was Eric Arthur Blair, was born on June 25th, 1903in N.W. Bengal. He moved to England as a child and attended Eton from 1917–1921.After finishing school he returned to Burma and joined the Indian Imperial Police. Itwas here that he wrote his first novel BURMESE DAYS which was the beginning ofhis criticism of totalitarianism and support for democratic socialism. In 1927 he leftfor London and Paris and it was during this time that he changed his name. He livedin extreme poverty and worked as a dishwasher, tutor and teacher, living a "tramp-likeexistence mixing with the squalid and the sordid in doss-houses and workhouses".

Orwell published A CLERGYMAN'S DAUGHTER (1935) and KEEP THEASPIDISTRA FLYING (1936) which were critical successes but did not sell well. Hewas married in 1936 and a year later published THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER. Withthe outbreak of the Spanish Civil War Orwell set off to Barcelona and joined themilitia. It was then that his eyes and consciousness were opened to the treachery ofCommunism. His future political beliefs were conceived and organised during thistime and in particular "his opinion of the essential decency of man, if only it wereallowed to triumph over political and social intrigue and cant".

In 1937 he returned to England but suffered from ill-health which followed him for theremainder of his life. He published COMING UP FOR AIR in 1939 followed by a longessay on Charles Dickens. Because of his bad health he was denied service in themilitary in World War II but in 1941 joined the Indian service of the B.B.C.. His wifedied during the last year of the war and the grieving Orwell went abroad as acorrespondent for THE OBSERVER. Between November 1943 and February 1944Orwell wrote his satire on the Russian Revolution, ANIMAL FARM, which waspublished in 1945. The book was a huge success and finally brought Orwell somefinancial security. He published many essays and works after this, the last being hisgrim, terrifying novel, 1984. He remarried in 1949 and made plans for a new book buton January 23rd, 1950, died suddenly.

Orwell published 13 books and wrote hundreds of essays. Although not considered agreat novelist he wrote cleanly, simply and succinctly like Hemingway and was agenius as a prose stylist. As a man who thrived on contradiction and whose work and beliefs were full ofparadoxes it is difficult to "apply a basic philosophy of belief to his collective works".He believed in socialism but felt it inappropriate for a writer to formally becomeaffiliated with a political party. He was an ardent patriot but criticised the English fortheir "class consciousness, their inablity to think logically and their lack of artisticability". "His fierce honesty and passionate pursuit of truth angered many but madecountless friendships among all sorts and conditions of men; and even enemies beganto respect him."
