3CSR and Environmental Strategy | STERIS Animal Health

2017/18 saw us enter the veterinary market in Europe for the first time, having successfully operated in the medical sector for over 20 years where we have provided sterilisation services and surgical instruments to the healthcare sector.

Whilst we are new to the European market, we have been successfully providing veterinary products in North America for over 20 years.

As animal owners ourselves, we know the importance our pets make to our own lives and how vital the right care and intervention is when they need it the most. Every instrument and device we sell has been inspected with the thought in mind that this instrument could be used on our own pet, it is this premise and passion that drives the beating heart of our business.

Over the next few years our aim is to play a leading role to the veterinary surgical and diagnostic market touching the lives of companion animals, equine and livestock up and down the UK, with plans to expand into European geographies by 2019.

There are many challenges that face the animal care sector from increases to the resistance of antibiotic treatment to diagnostic challenges and challenges in the recruitment and retention of vets. Whilst our products may assist with some elements of surgical and diagnostic challenges we want to reach beyond those boundaries and assist with giving back to the rural and veterinary communities we serve.

For the next two years we intend to embed our Corporate and Social Responsibility activities in the following areas:

• Educating and encouraging new vets to practice • Giving our time to support sustainable projects for animals in need

It is important that our Customers recognise that our devotion to animals extends beyond the boundaries of our business in our relentless pursuit for improving the health of all animals big or small.

Responsible supply chain

We expect the same focus on quality and Customer Service from our suppliers as our Customers expect from us. It is important that every supplier that provides products or services to our business is a responsible supplier under our rules of foundation. We ask that all suppliers are able to demonstrate evidence of: • Reducing their carbon footprint• Contributing to their local community • Uphold a code of conduct that is both ethical

and moral• Has clear employment inclusion policies and does

not discriminate on the basis of an employees race, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or genetic information

How we give back to Planet Earth

As a business that relies heavily on a logistics and supply chain infrastructure we recognise that what we do will have a small impact on the environment. As such, our parent company STERIS has developed its own environmental policy that, combined with STERIS Animal Health, is a good beginning to what we hope will continue to evolve.

• We have implemented interior and exterior LED lighting across our factories, offices and distribution centres to reduce our overall energy consumption

• We are working to improve the fuel efficiency of our fleet introducing cross over vehicles and evaluating market availability of more sustainable vehicles such as hybrids and electric cars

• We ensure all our third party shipping companies have carbon reduction targets in place to minimise our business impact on the environment

• Our parent company STERIS has a history of providing assistance to communities that may have been adversely affected by natural disasters

• We encourage cycling to work, we provide showers and safe cycle storage for our teams

We don’t want to stop there and have several ideas which we hope to implement over the next 5 years

• By 2023 we aim to have significantly reduced our use of paper, and, where paper is used that constitutes a minimum 50% recycled paper bulk

• We will work with our logistics supplier to encourage a greener option of hybrid or electric vehicles to drive down the environmental cost of our distribution

• For every 500 boxes we use, we will donate one tree to The Woodland Trust to plant

• We work to influence event organisers for the veterinary market to reconsider plastic drinking cups in exchange for reusable containers

Every contribution counts

We know it might be a small gesture but we actively ask our manufacturers to source recycled solutions for all our packaging. Our boxes even contain ideas that Customers can apply to ensure our boxes are re-used. We actively recycle all plastics, paper and cardboard via our own recycling scheme in our distribution warehouse and STERIS Animal Health HQ.

We also actively encourage our Customers to think about more sustainable ways of consuming, for example the give-aways we provide Customers at events include re-usable drinks containers and biodegradable pens so we are helping to reduce the amount of plastic in use.

Driven by passion, guided by ethics

It’s true that many organisations are dismissive to the importance of giving back; at STERIS Animal Health we see this activity as fundamental to the DNA of our business. How can we hope to learn about the true challenges of animal health if we are not taking a grass roots approach and rolling up our sleeves to lead from the front?

At STERIS Animal Health we have identified several initiatives we hope to participate in over the next five years that enables us to do just that. We will report on their success via our website.

Giving our time to support sustainable projects for animals in need

In May 2018 a team of STERIS Animal Health volunteers helped Bransby Horses in Lincoln to build an edible garden, providing a sustainable source of food for their visitors café. As one of the largest equine charities in the UK it cares for more than 400 animals through rescue, rehabilitation, sanctuary care and rehoming.

We are committed to donating 2 days a year for worthwhile causes where animals benefit

Educating and encouraging new vets to practice

When we first set out in our veterinary market adventures we contacted the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to meet with them and understand the vital role they play in veterinary education.

This year STERIS Animal Health are pleased to support the college with some key initiatives, including the loan of our Endo-I® scope to their equine educational department so that veterinary students can benefit from the latest in diagnostic technology. We are also supporting the RVC Careers Fair 2018 and leading a workshop for the graduate attendees.

Over the coming years we aim to improve access to veterinary education by providing online taster courses for students considering veterinary medicine to encourage them to consider a career with animals.

We will also continue to educate and inspire through our social media channels.

Our business activity is embedded in clinical practice

We are passionate about animal care, we know how to market, manufacture and run a successful company but we are not vets. That is why, we allocate money in our operations budget to working with a highly regarded vet in their field to assist us with product development, education and product evaluations and improvement.

In order to be successful and resonate with our Customers, our business activity and output must be embedded in veterinary clinical practice and that is why we regard the veterinary consultant position so highly.

We work to the same manufacturing standards as humans, that is because, we believe animals deserve the best quality too.

Through our human health accreditation to ISO:13485:2016 an our STERIS 10 point quality check, we never compromise on quality but constantly work towards even greater improvements for our Customers and their animal patients.

Our teams

Every member of our team is passionate about the care of animals and in turn, we are passionate about our people, they are at the heart of the products and services we deliver.

We benefit from a strong leadership team and a relatively flat hierarchical structure, this is purposeful in so much as we feel this embeds a genuine sense of ownership thus creating a performance led culture that is organic, and puts in place the building blocks for talent management through multiple disciplines covered by one team member. The work place is changing, just like our target market and our structure internally needs to be flexible and respond to those changes effectively.

STERIS Animal Health is a great place to work and we place great importance in going above and beyond a job description to create a career, there is opportunity for everyone regardless of their role. We are passionate, fearless in the pursuit of animal health solutions and in focusing everything we do on the Customer.

We encourage colleague engagement and provide training and educational opportunities for all our team members.

In-house research and development

Our engineering research and development team are based in Birmingham Alabama USA and are guided by experts in veterinary surgery. They are the manufacturers of our equine and companion Endoscope and continue to develop new technologies and solutions.

“ If only passion for a cause you truly believe in was enough to build

a successful business. At STERIS Animal Health Services we recognise

the importance of growing an idea with commercial validity and passion intertwined. This is what

we have tried to achieve.”
