Superconducting Undulator (SCU) R&D for Free-Electron Laser (FEL) Systems (Argonne)

Highlights – December 01-31 2015

The LBNL undulator arrived at Argonne December 14th 2015

LBNL Magnet Preparation

The LBNL magnet arrived safely as far as we are able to tell. The device is shown in Figure 1a in its as-arrived state, and is shown after being rotated upright (with shipping bolts still attached) in Figure 1b.

(a) (b)Figure 1: The LBNL device is shown as it arrived (a) and after being rotated upright (b).

Preliminary alignment of the device was completed. The initial yaw of 1.5mm was corrected to within 100m after shifting the cold mass and aligning the beam axis with respect to the frame.

Cable lead routing began – main current leads were routed for both cores as shown in Figure 2. The liquid helium tank and piping test fit were successful, as shown in Figure 3. Thermosensor holders have been designed and six of them will be fabricated in January. LBNL is preparing a power supply rack that should ship to Argonne in mid-January 2016.

Issues and Actions • None at this time.

Schedule Status • Delayed from the original plan.

90-day Forecast • Final alignment, cable routing, and verification will be complete.• The cold mass will be installed in the cryostat. • Six thermosensor holders will be fabricated in January.• Cool down of the LBNL SCU magnet will begin in February 2016.
