SILKEBORG MUSEUM
The aim of the project is to study the unrealised Jørn Utzon’s Silkeborg Museum in order to suggest an executive approach for its eventual realisation. In fact, the project never reached the execution phase, and the techical details were never realised by the architect. The original project has been divided into 3 parts: the drop-shaped caves, renamed “Tulips”, the ramps and the beams. In the end, a prototype of each solution has been realised in reinforced concrete in scale 1:2.In order to realise the different elements, the shapes of the original project have been reviewed to decide which parts would be prefabricated and which ones would be realised in-situ.

HOUSING IN BOLOGNA
The project is a family house where architectural composition and space organisation are investigated. The site given for this task is an unsettled squared lot of 1600 m2, and the design has to be suitable for a single family with four members, including all the living spaces specified by the assignment: a living area, a separated kitchen, individual bedrooms for the children, a studio and a guest room with private bathroom. Considering the needs of the users, the bedrooms face east in order to allow natural sunlight in the morning, while the living area and the studio face west in order to gain natural light in the afternoon, when the family comes back from work or school. The big living room opens up towards the garden on the swimming pool, and the big glass façades are openable during summer to allow natural ventilation within the building.

ØRESTAD CHURCH
The Ørestad Church project is set in Ørestad South, the new city district located in the south-east suburbs of Copenhagen. The process involves different concepts in order to create a building where the structural system, acoustics, functions and aesthetics interact within each other to create a unified whole. The purpose is to create an inviting and accessible building that makes room for both religious and non-religious activities.Acoustic simulations with CATT-Acoustic software are run in order to verify that the final design fulfills the requirements of good acoustic qualities for speech and music, good sound pressure distribution, reverberation time and to ensure that echoes are avoided in the sacral room. The steel structure has been verified with the Finite Element Modeling software Staad.Pro: the chosen steel profiles are I-shaped beams with the outline dimension of 800x400mm with a middle flange of 200mm.

DWELLING IN TIME
Using architecture as a means for examining certain central phenomenological issues, Dwelling In Time develops an understanding of dwell experience of time, within a specific landscape context. The project regards the design of a simple dwelling with space for a retreat/studio for a painter. Beyond providing for the basic needs of accommodating one person, plus possibly a companion, the building’s design evokes an understanding of the place and of time. The simple building of approximately 35 m2 includes the essential elements of dwelling: fire for heating and cooking and water for washing and toilet facilities, with a sleeping possibility for 1-2 persons and a work, recreational and social space. The construction and choice of materials may take into consideration their connection with the landscape and environmental impact.

MEADOW CREEK
Meadow Creek focuses on designing two apartment types and a site plan reaching the PassivHaus standard. The project has a density of 80%, and different levels of fruition of the outdoor space are created: private gardens, public parks and pedestrian and cycle paths are connected together to serve both the inhabitants and the visitors.Investigations about openings’ surface, number of storeys and orientation were carried out to analyse the different consumption scenarios in order to select the best approach for the design. PHPP software has been used to verify that the final design was answering the requirements of the PassivHaus standard: energy balances and heating/cooling loads, comfortable ventilation, summer comfort, compact service units and mechanical cooling were simulated in the software. Light distribution was calculated with RELUX software: good indoor light conditions helped minimising the energy demand and thus contributing to meet the passive requirements.

Ill. 96-1 Site plan.
The overall site plan shows a scheme for the passive housing complex. The future inhabitants will live in a dense place but without renouncing to all the comforts they might need from their ideal house and at the same time experience a new environment containing different landscapes. Water, wooden paths and wild nature are some of the main attractions in the area and they create together with the buildings a variation in the outdoor spaces where the private sphere meets the public through a transition and the common areas are placed in gathering points of the location both for the inhabitants and the visitors.

This plan shows more in detail what the central spot of the project area is consisting of. On the right side of the apartments is the main area for social activities, with direct connection to the various areas and activities at the site. On the left side of the housing complex are the private gardens shielded behind trees and bushes to protect privacy. Together with building on the opposite side of the path the trees and bushes also functions as wind protection. The diagrams points out the access to the car parking and recycling garbage that will be put underground and accessed from the 150 apartments’ external stairs.

SPORT CENTRE IN BOLOGNA
The project is located on an area where the barracks Sani Casaralta in Bologna once found place. The task is to design a sports center to answer to the needs of the new quarter in a polyfunctional building: a sports centre as reference point not only for athletic organisations, but also for social events such as concerts or school events or simply meeting points in the open-air arena. The sport centre is composed of a main court sized 20x40m where sports as basketball, five-a-side football and volleyball can take place; in addition, two smaller spaces for dance, yoga and pilates class and a gym equipped with workout machinery are set in the entrance hall. The connection with the parc is a strong concept for the project: the building is partially underground, in order to integrate itself with the garden with an outdoor arena designed for concerts and exhibitions.

MOLENTARGIUS EXHIBITION HALL
The project is set in Cagliari, Sardinia, in the surroundings of the Molentargius Park, a natural sanctuary included in the metropolitan area of the interland of the city. The designed building is an exhibition centre where the history of the park is preserved and its plant life and fauna is explained. As nature has a stong influence over the site, an analysis on a plant species was done in order to understand its peculiar evolution and settlement in the area to reproduce its efficiencies in the design process: the Typha Angustifolia is a characteristic water plant growing in the surroundings of ponds and lakes, with a strong need of water. The façade component and its proliferation on the surfaces give the building its peculiarity: the external surface varies accordind to its distance from the closest water source, as a recall of the analized plant species. The final result shows a building that opens up towards water fronts, and that more intimately closes up from the streets in the surroundings.

JLA - WALL INSTALLATION
The JLA project was realised at Atelier Manferdini for the engineering firm John Labib + Associates Structural Engineers, and it regards the interior design for their Los Angeles office. The focus of the project is the design of a modular installation to decorate the internal space of the office: the project involved the construction of a modular wall harmoniously dividing the two main areas of the working space. The element used for the installation is a flower composed of three suitably folded panels and anchored to an aluminium structure forming triangles: this structure is anchored to the shelf units and it is supported by four columns that were already dividing the two areas of the office. Each of the three parts of the flowers is colored with exterior powder coatings in different colors.

ANDORRAN SECONDARY SCHOOL - RETROFIT PROJECT
This thesis describes an approach for the analysis of potential energy savings for the retrofit of the Andorran Secondary School in Andorra la Vella.Annual consumption of the past years were collected in order to confront the actual needs of the building with the ones obtained for the retrofitted solution. Various energy simulations were run in order to evaluate the results and to identify the best solution. In addition to the standard and more common retrofit interventions (such as insulation of the building envelope and replacement of windows), façades’ extensions were added to the original building to work as solar greenhouses, thus contributing to the overall energy savings.Energy simulations were run with IESVE, a software that allows to test different design options and to draw conclusions on energy use, emissions and indoor comforts. At the end of the process, the retrofitted building reached the Passive House standard.
