WATER
ANNACIS WATER SUPPLY TUNNEL PROJECT
Project OverviewTo meet the growing demand for drinking water in the region, Metro Vancouver is planning to construct a major water infrastructure project called the Annacis Water Supply Tunnel Project deep under the Fraser River, between the City of New Westminster and the City of Surrey.
The tunnel will be one of five new water supply tunnel crossings in the region built to withstand a major earthquake.

ANNACIS WATER SUPPLY TUNNEL PROJECT
Project ActivitiesThis new water supply tunnel will be excavated deep underground using a tunnel-boring machine. The tunnel-boring machine will launch from a vertical entry shaft on the Surrey side and progress north under the Fraser River to the vertical exit shaft on the New Westminster side.
Once the tunnel is drilled, a steel water main will be installed inside the new shafts and tunnel and connected to underground valve chambers at each shaft site, connecting it to the region’s drinking water system.
The new tunnel will increase the capacity of the existing system to help ensure the continued, reliable delivery of clean, safe drinking water in a growing region, and will be designed to meet current seismic standards.

ANNACIS WATER SUPPLY TUNNEL PROJECT
Proposed GreenspaceAfter construction of the new Annacis Water Supply Tunnel, the north shaft site in New Westminster, located at 1031 Quebec Street, will become a greenspace area that residents can utilize. The intention of the space is to maximize greenspace in what will become a densely populated area in the New Westminster core and to add usable, functional space for residents.
Park edges include lush vegetation and seating.
On-site stormwater catchment and treatment.
Perspective view in the park.

Greenspace Design Principles
Beneficial SpeciesBirds, insects and pollinators will be supported and encouraged throughout the greenspace with the introduction of native plant species that provide food, forage and habitat.
Functional LandscapeThe greenspace will function as both a utility for the water network beneath its surface and an attractive magnet for the neighbourhood, drawing residents of all ages to the site to sit, stay and play.
Water & HydrologySituated upon the proposed water supply tunnel, water will form a foundation for the design of the greenspace, from its drainage and filtration in planted areas to the bio-swale that collects and temporarily stores it.

Minimizing Construction ImpactsMetro Vancouver is committed to minimizing traffic and access impacts during construction of this essential water infrastructure project.
Noise: There will be some noise associated with the construction at the north shaft site. Crews will attempt, wherever practical, to reduce noise impacts to nearby residents and businesses. All work will comply with City of New Westminster bylaws or granted bylaw variances.
Parking: On-street parking will be maintained as much as possible; however there may be restrictions to street parking in the vicinity of the work zone during construction.
Pedestrians & Cyclists: Sidewalk access will generally be maintained during construction. Crosswalks, and occasionally one side of the sidewalk, may be closed intermittently during construction. Detour routes will be in place; please follow the direction of signage and traffic control personnel.
Trucks: Trucks will access the site using the designated truck routes to reduce traffic in the construction area.
Business Access: Access to businesses will be maintained during construction.
