Please plan accordingly and look to the SCORE for reminders throughout the year.

COWBOY ACTION Millcreek Wranglers held a “Gun Fight

at the OK Corral Revisited“ themed match on Saturday June 16, 2018. It

started out not too hot, but as the morning wore on it hit towards the

low 90s. We just finished in time. We had 10 participants, three

of them were new to Millcreek Wranglers matches, so let’s greet

PaPaw, Grizzly Adams, and Weird Bob Handcock. Wicklow Wrangler was first, with a clean as a whistle match, no misses or procedurals, PaPaw came in second by a close 5 seconds, and Weird Bob Handcock was third. Looks like our new partners are not first timers at cowboy action. Coming up in July is our annual Hawaiian themed match. You’re encouraged to wear the loudest Hawaiian shirts and colorful shorts, straw hats are OK, but no flip flops. Or you can wear traditional cowboy outfits if you can stand the heat. So see you all on Saturday July 21, 2018. Let’s grow cowboy action shooting at Anne Arundel Fish and Game. Please tell your cowboy action shooting friends or those thinking doing cowboy action about our matches on the third Saturday of each month. And we don’t take a winter break, so you can keep your aim sharp the year round.

Jim Price, Bob Yurwitz, and Bill Patterson

Three trap shooters from AAF&G traveled to

Thurmont, Maryland, the 3rd week of June to shoot the Maryland State Trap Championships. Bob Yurwitz, the chairman of the AAF&G Trap Committee, Jim Price, a long time member of AAF&G and the club’s most experienced Amateur Trap Association (ATA) shooter, and Bill Patterson, a four year member, participated in the annual five day event. The first day stated out propitiously with both Jim and Bob winning Handicap trophies. Jim won the Overall Handicap Trophy for the day shooting a 98 from the 22-yard line. Bob, shooting a 97, won the 18-19 yard class. For their high scores, according to the rules, both were awarded a one yard “punch” to their handicap. Bob now shoots from the 20-yard line and Jim from the 23. Thursday was my turn on the podium. Shooting from the 18-yard line, I shot a 92 to become the 18-19 yard class champion. Bob shot a 93 in handicap, but because he had been punched the day before to the 20-yard line, he was now in the 20-21 yard class. I didn’t get a punch because my score wasn’t high enough.

MARYLAND STATE TRAP CHAMPIONSHIPSJUNE 20 – 25, 2018

Friday was Jim’s turn again. He shot a 99 while running 75 straight to become the Maryland Class A Champion. Saturday, which is the biggest day at the shoot with over 200 people shooting, brought out the best in Jim and Bob. The shoot this day is 200 Singles Targets. Jim shot two 98’s for a score of 196. Bob shot a 95 and a 99 for 194. Both ran 75 straights to get to those scores. 196 was not enough to win anything for Jim in Class A. Bob’s 194 got him to a shoot-off for Maryland Class C runner-up. But, unfortunately, he lost the shoot-off 23-22. But look at those scores! Sunday, the last day of the tournament, consists of the Doubles and Handicap championship. Since Bob,

Jim, and Bill don’t shoot doubles competitively, they just shot for the handicap championship. Bill shot a 91 from the 18-yard line to get him to a shoot-off for the Maryland State 18-19 Yard Open Champion. Bill prevailed in the shoot-off 22 – 17 to take home his second trophy of the week. It was a fabulous week for all three of us. We certainly exceeded our expectations and look forward to more exciting shoots.

IDPA

BUG GUN WINNER FROM DELAWARE

Since mid-May IDPA has hosted three matches for approximately 150 registered shooters, which equates

to approximately 15,000 rounds fired. The Bug Match, supervised by our fearless match director, Bill Osborne, was definitely the highlight of the month. Shooters so enjoyed breaking out their pocket pistols with a capacity of six rounds. Mag changes were fast and furious. For those without pocket pistols, the magazine capacity was limited to six rounds to keep things even. The legitimate first place finisher with the bug gun was Mark Rogers, a Delaware native from Bridgeville IDPA. The remaining sandbaggers, shooting their non-bug guns at the reduced capacity were

yours truly, Richard Simmons, Ken Hahn, Michael Thompson and Leland Bradley, finishing in the top spots, respectively. Hold on tight, we anticipate the remaining portion of June into July to be a barn burner. Come out and join us, if you can stand the heat.

PRECISION PISTOL

Service Pistol Results

We hosted the annual NRA 9th Annual Chesapeake Bay Regional

Service Pistol Championship June 16th. Altogether some 20 shooters competed using the difficult-to-master service pistol. Besides the championship, at stake were also Civilian Marksmanship Program Service Pistol and 22 Rimfire Excellence in Competition honors and NRA Distinguished Revolver points. Limiting this report to only club-related highlights, the overall match winner (Gold) was Rich Kang – no surprise there if you are a regular reader of this column. Tom Willats captured Silver. Also not surprising, several AAF&G people did well. Ed Grove ripped out an overall third place finish (Bronze). Mike McGrath and Mike Burke were respectively second place shooters in the Expert and Sharpshooter/Marksman classes. Mike McGrath won Silver points in the CMP 22 Rimfire. Ben Lassiter brought home Bronze points in CMP Service Pistol. Of course none of this happens without expert officiating, this time provided by Fran Filippelli (CRO), Warren Isaac (ACRO), Paul Wood, Ron Sweet, Mark Spaulding, Scott Staley, and Erick Graves. And let’s note our chairman Paul Striffler, who organized and coordinated the event.

Trigger HappyWhen it comes to pistol shooting, being trigger happy is a positive thing. Trigger happiness is the result of the trigger being operated while the sights are aligned, and the sight picture is reasonably good. Trigger happiness causes holes to appear in the center of targets, often close to previously made holes. So how can you become trigger happy? One can buy into a competition-grade trigger which may help, but is no guarantee. The only for-sure way to achieve trigger happiness is to get a competition-grade trigger finger. Unfortunately, those are not for sale – you must build your own from the raw materials attached to your hand and between your ears. Once built, you can use your competition-grade trigger finger with most guns. The good news it that is you have the pistol and the will, we have the place and the skill to help. We train on most Tuesday’s at 10 AM (come 30 minutes early), and we polish skills at frequent league, NRA, CMP and special matches. The club calendar has the specifics. Get in touch with Paul Striffler ([email protected]), Mike Merritt ([email protected]) or Mike McGrath for more information or to just talk it over and get some advice.

Black PowderVery Very Vintage (Muzzleloader) Rifle Matches

We have had a muzzleloader rifle match on each of our first three Sanctioned Weekends this year with decent

weather and a decent turnout for each match. So far, we have had a total of 14 shooters for these matches. One of the significant differences between these matches and other types of matches here at the club is the process involved in loading the rifles for each shot. In fact, we had a spectator at our June match remark, “You have to do all of that for one shot?” This makes this shooting sport as much a social event as it is a competition. We will have three more muzzleloader rifle matches during the three remaining Sanctioned Weekends this fall. If you think you might be interested in this type of shooting, come on out to watch one of our matches, the dates are published in the monthly calendar in the SCORE newsletter. Additionally, if you would like to learn the finer details about muzzle loading firearms, we will be holding a clinic sometime later this year. If you would be interested in attending this clinic, please reply to [email protected].

CLUB HOUSE CALENDAR

The club house calendar is managed by

Andrea Miller. Please contact Andrea

at [email protected] to have an

event put on the calendar. Andrea

keeps a copy at home. This way the

clubhouse isn't over booked on any

one day.

Clubhouse Enhancements

Observant members attending meetings, classes, and other events at the clubhouse may notice that there are some new furnishings therein.

First, as noted in the President’s column last month, is the bookcase on the back wall. Designed and executed

by Dave Miller, we hope it will accommodate the growing number of firearms and hunting related books donated by members for other members’ reading enjoyment and display them in a manner calculated to make them more easily retrievable than when they were housed in a cast off china closet. While these are for the most part donated books, please don’t remove them from the clubhouse since many are good reference books on specific firearms which other members may want to refer to. We have a couple of ad hoc bookshelf custodians who will be organizing the collection, but we do not yet have a “librarian” position which might enable the possibility of checking out books for short term loans.

Second, we have two new flags in the front of the room. Not only are the flags new, but the flagpoles, bases, and finials are also new. The eagle on top of the American flag is fairly typical along with balls, spearpoints, and lances for many flagpoles – civilian and military – displaying the American flag. However, as for the Maryland flag, there is only one appropriate finial. What many folks – even native born Marylanders as well as those from other parts – may not know is that the official flagpole finial for Maryland flags is the “bottony cross” carrying with it the theme of the bottony cross design from the flag itself, i.e., the lower left and upper right hand red and white quadrants from the Crossland coat of arms of Lord Cecil Calvert. And not surprisingly, Maryland is the only state in the union that has a specific guideline not only on how to display the flag but on what the flagpole should look like as well!

In 1945, the Maryland General Assembly made a gold cross bottony the official ornament for the top of any flagpole carrying the state flag. Sometime before October 10, 2007, Government House (the governor's mansion) in Annapolis ceased to display the cross bottony at the top of the flag pole, but the flags at the State House continue to do so (adhering to Maryland General Provisions Code § 7-202 & 7-203 (2016)). While all other state government buildings, including public schools, obey this guideline, many private individuals and businesses do not, quite possibly because they simply don’t know they should.

MEMBER'S CORNER

In May my son, Jake, and I went to the CMP’s three-day Advanced Maintenance Class in Aniston, Alabama (aka Talladega). The title doesn’t really describe the experience. What we were there for was to build our own match grade M1 Garand rifles from the ground-up under the guidance of instructors who build them every day for a living in the CMP’s Custom Shop. It turned out to be as cool as it sounds, in fact the whole thing exceeded our expectations. Scoring a spot in a class begins with a lottery because there’re too many people trying to get in to manage it any other way, especially if you want to do one of the “buddy classes” with someone else like we did. The class isn't exactly cheap at $1,800 for a Field Grade gun or $2,000 for the CMP Special. If you wanted to outright buy either of those from the CMP it’d be less than half as much, but then you would not have built it yourself or learned a lot along the way or had an awful lot of fun. Speaking of costs, on the plus side there’re plenty of cheap motels around there. The one we stayed in was less than $80 per night all totaled including a decent breakfast spread (by the way, the CMP gives you lunch every day of the class, so two meals per day were covered). You start day one with a USGI receiver that’s in fantastic condition. Mine was a Springfield. It looked like it’d never been issued. You build from a combination of new, new-old stock, and issued parts, all in top-notch shape. Every rifle gets a new walnut stock, handguard, and a new Criterion barrel. If you’re worried about your ability to do the gunsmithing, don’t be. There’s no question you have to do some pretty tricky things. For example, the barrel chambers are not completely cut. They leave them a few thousandths short intentionally so they can be headspaced to your specific bolt and we had to do the final chamber reaming. That made me a little nervous, but the instructors walk you through it all and as they said more than once, “There’s nothing you can screw up that we can’t fix or replace.” I can’t say enough good things about those guys. They were

The CMP Advanced Maintenance Class is Worth it!

definitely committed to every student walking away with a quality product that they knew how to maintain. On range day, which was the last half of day three, they did the initial test firing and function check and got the sights on paper at 100 yards, then they turned our new babies over to us to shoot and take home. No bothersome FFL. The rifles come complete with a GI sling, a hard case, and one more en bloc for the collection. The shooting is done on Talladega’s (literally) world class rifle range. You have to see this place to believe it, the brochures don’t do it justice. It’s like a very high-end resort. The ranges have electronic scoring, no pit duty or schlepping out to put up targets, and everyone has a paid RSO who is very careful about making sure you don’t shoot the electronic gizmos to bits. You have to prove you can shoot

in the black at 100 yards before they let you move to 200, and 200 before 300, and so on. One range goes out to 600 yards. That’s the max at Talladega. Because of the electronics you just sort of lie in one spot and the targets raise or lower depending on what distance you want to shoot at. No moving to a different point or waiting for the pit crew. You see your shots on a display screen along with statistics about group size and group center and so forth. Again, no need to move (or even stand up). It will spoil you fast. Maybe it’s not a good thing completely. Since I retired there’re some weeks when the only

exercise I get is walking out to change targets. Anyway, it was a great three days and so much fun that neither the cost nor the 12 hour drive really bothered either of us. It was worth it all, and better still because we stayed an extra day to drag out the ARs, that time literally spending 8 hours shooting owing to the lighter recoil. As an aside, if you’re an AR person you’ll likely find this interesting: Jake was shooting his Rock River A4 match gun prone with iron sights way inside the 8 ring at 600 yards with 55 (yes, 55)grain Fiocchi Dynamics (#223A). At $0.29 a round with free shipping it’s got me wondering seriously if it’s worth it to handload .223. I only mention all that about the ARs because it turned out I didn’t have two days of 30-06 in me and I was really glad I brought something with less horsepower to play with that could still reach out to 600. Think about it if you go.

Jake and Mike posing with one of the Instructors. I think his name was, John something. Seemed to

know the rifle pretty well.

It was very well received and right now we certainly plan to host another one later this year. Anybody who was wait-listed for the first clinic will have an opportunity to sign up for that once the date is finalized, so stay tuned We are also asking the membership for training feedback. Did you miss a specific class and want to see if it is offered again? Is there a class not offered that you feel will benefit the AAF&G community? As always, please contact the AAF&G Training team at: [email protected] if you have any questions. We want to hear from you!!!

But even if you go alone, I can’t imagine a better trip, except don’t tell the Camp Butner rifle guys we never could find Carolina Barbecue either going down or coming back. . . had to eat hot dogs. CLUB MATCHES

Service Rifle Matches: The next Service Rifle/MSR/Any Rifle subject to the FSA of 2013 Match (except M1A – they compete in the Vintage Military Rifle Match on the 3rd Saturday) will be held on Saturday, July 7th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. The NRA 500 match (about which see more below) will be held on the preceding Friday, July 6th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. NOTE: CMP & NRA match shooters should be aware of the new prohibition on muzzle brakes for CMP & NRA service rifle competitions. Read the last paragraph below.

Vintage Military Rifle Match: The next Vintage Military Rifle Match will be held on Saturday, July 14th from 10:00am to 12:00 noon and will be for Manual Turnbolt Rifles. New Service Rifle and Vintage Military Rifle Match shooters should consider arriving NLT 9:30am Saturday in order to familiarize themselves with the course of fire and get guidance in positions and use of the sling. A five minute unlimited sighter shots sighting-in period will precede the record fire phases. For details on high power rifle match requirements, please visit the web page at http://aafg.org/events.html.

Very Vintage Single Shot Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Match: The next Very Vintage Single Shot Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Match will be held from 10:00am until noon on Saturday, September 29th. Allowable rifles are single shot rifles chambered for a cartridge originally loaded with black powder. Cartridges loaded with safe smokeless loads are allowed as are reproductions of vintage single shot rifles. Targets are at 100 yds and the SR-1 Targets (6” aiming black) will be used.

Very Very Vintage Rifle match: There will be a Very Very Vintage Rifle (Muzzle loader) Match. Matches during the last three Sanctioned Weekends of 2018 on Sep 8/9, Oct 6/7, and Nov3/4. What is not yet determined is which of the days – Sat or Sun - the Very Very Vintage matches will be held on. Regardless, the matches will be from 10am –noon. Show up at 9:30 for set up. Course of fire will be, as usual, 10 rds in two 5-round strings. Black powder, Pyrodex, or other safe Black powder substitute propellants can be used as can any style rifle (inline, traditional sidehammer) with any sort of ignition system (matchlock, wheel lock, flintlock, percussion cap, 209 primers) as long as it loads from the muzzle. Targets are at 50 yards with an aiming black approximately 6’ in diameter. Shooters can choose to shoot offhand at a standard SR-1

target or from the bench at a handicapping target with a similarly sized aiming black but with smaller - lower value - scoring rings.

Muzzle Brakes: Muzzle brakes are useful in reducing recoil impulses to make heavy calibers more pleasant to shoot or, as in the case of a bolt action .50 BMG rifle, make it even possible to shoot from the shoulder at all. However, that said, they seem to be seen most frequently on AR15s, mostly AR15s of the tacticool persuasion, and while they can make post shot target acquisition quicker, that ability does come at a cost of annoying, even obnoxious muzzle blasts to either side which can be felt deep in the viscera of neighboring shooters. This can have an adverse effect on concentration. CMP does not allow muzzle brake equipped AR15s in competitions due to the effect of muzzle brake blast on fellow competitors.

As a result, the Eccles Range competition committee has determined that for future CMP & NRA Service Rifle matches, AR15s with muzzle brakes will not be allowed to compete. In a similar vein, if you are shooting your muzzle brake equipped AR15 casually at the Eccles Range, as a courtesy to your fellow shooters please choose a shooting bench as far away from other shooters as possible if possible. If you have done so and another shooter comes in and sets up near or next to you, simply advise him/her that your AR15 has a muzzle brake and they may want to set up farther away (if possible). While a similar determination regarding Mosin Nagant M38 and M44 rifles has yet to be finalized, they, too, have a pronounced muzzle blast due in no small part to a short barrel coupled with a 127 year old cartridge designed and loaded for a rifle with a barrel almost twice as long as that on the M38 or M44. The take away here is to be considerate of your fellow shooters. Shoot straight and Shoot Safely!

You know this, but it bears repeating:

If you allow your child or teen to use a gun for recreation, it is very important that you:

• Store the gun unloaded and locked up. Lock up the bullets separately and hide all keys.

• Make sure that your child or teen understands that it is never OK to handle a gun without a responsible adult there.

• Teach your child or teen to assume a gun is loaded and never to point a gun at someone.

• Set a good example with your own safe gun handling practices.

If you take advantage of this opportunity, this year on September 15th could be the ideal opportunity for you to do just that. You could help fund youth in many organizations as they learn safety, discipline, concentration and precision in the sport of rifle competition at the same time as you secure that deduction. The NRA Foundation is the educational element of the NRA. Funds raised at the annual banquet help support the Youth Shooting Programs in the State of Maryland through grants. Many Clubs, 4-H Clubs, BSA and JROTC have received grants from the NRA Foundation over the years. I work with the Anne Arundel Fish & Game as a Coach for the Jr. Rifle Program and the Annapolis High School NJROTC Air Rifle team and personally oversee the use of grant money awarded to these programs. If you are a business owner you can donate services or goods from your company that can be used for our silent or live auction or give cash to underwrite an item ( from $50 to $1,200) in the live auction. Your company name and generous donation would be listed in our banquet program. You can also buy a banquet ticket or a table for the banquet at the link below. If you do any type of crafts, you can donate an item to our silent or live auction.

The NRA Banquet Committee is doing an online raffle again this year. “2-Gun Winner Take All” Jr. & Sr. Ruger Precision Rifles. Tickets are $50 each and ONLY 100 tickets will be sold! You do not need to be present to win. Go to the link below for banquet and raffle tickets.

QUOTES TO NOTE!

Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no

matter how popular and respected, is the right of citizens to keep and bear

arms. This is not to say that firearms should not be very carefully used and that

definite safety rules of precaution should not be taught and enforced. But the right

of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government,

and one more safeguard against tyranny which now appears remote in America, but

which historically has proved to be always possible.
