Anne Frank’s old Life

Anne Frank was born 12th of June,1929.She had a pretty normallife and had a pet cat

Frank was born Annelies Marie Frank at Maingau Red Cross Clinic, Germany to Edith and Otto Frank. She had a sister, Margot Frank, and a cousin called Buddy Elias. Her father owned a company. Her and her family were liberal Jews and did not observe all of the customs and traditions of Judaism.

After Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party won the federal election in 1933 and Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of the Reich, Edith Frank and her children went to stay with Edith’s mother Rosa in Aachen. Anne’s father, Otto remained in Frankfurt.

Otto got an offer to start a company in Amsterdam so he moved there. He began working at the Opekta Works, a company that sold the fruit extract pectin.

Edith travelled back and forth between Aachen and Amsterdam and found an apartment on the Merwedeplein (Merwede Square) in the Riveerenbuurt neighbourhood of Amsterdam, where more Jewish-German refugees settled. In late December 1933. Edith followed her husband together with Margot. Anne stayed with her grandmother until February, when the family was reunited in the Netherlands.

The Franks were among 300,000 Jews who fled Germany between 1933 and 1939. After the family moved to Amsterdam the children were enrolled in school—Margot in public school and Anne in a Montessori school.

Despite struggles with the Dutch language Margot became a star pupil. Anne soon got used to the new school and made some friends which one of them was called ‘Hannah Goslar’ who one day would be one of Anne Frank’s best friends.

By 1938 Otto Frank had started a second company called, Pectacon, which was a wholesaler of herbs, pickling salts, and mixed spices, used in the production of sausages. Herman van Pels was employed by Pectacon as an advisor about spices.

When the Nazis won things got a little worse as certain parks and cafes started being restricted so that no Jews could enter. Eventually citizenship was taken away from the family and the others Jews.

Otto Frank tried to emigrate his family to America but failed. When Margot got sent a letter telling her to return to Germany to work and the family decided that was enough. The prepared a hiding place later to be called ‘The Secret Annex’ that was located in the Opekta office.

Before the family went into hiding they left fake evidence that they had gone to Switzerland. Unfortunately the family had to look non-suspicious so they had to wear as many layers of clothes as they could and only had one small bag each to bring other belongings and had to leave Moortje behind

Anne Frank used to live a fairly normal life but that changed drastically but compared to other Jews in hiding it actually wasn’t that abnormal.
