Irish Independent Tuesday 5 September 2017
there for everyone services for those hoping to leave the car at home.
More cycle lanes would encourage people to take the bike to work, and hopefully convince parents that their offspring can travel independently to school instead of being driven.
The solution to our congestion problem is more nuanced than merely banning cars. There are thousands who need their car on a daily basis, and they need to be accommodated. But we must realise that in
our cities, public transport must take priority by virtue of the fact that it carries so many people and thereby represents a more efficient use of road space.
Longer-term action is needed, and all parties should be asked to set out their plans to tackle this problem, in particular addressing the fact that we refuse to build up in our cities. By continuing to sprawl out, we put further pressure on the scarce road space that's there.
levels soar
larly longjourneys as expected tailbacks will mount into cities.
Dublin, Cork and Lir:nerick will be facing the toughest delays, the motorist watchdog said. After the initial expected build up of September traffic, October will bring shorter daylight hours and could bring even worse traffic.
Enda Buckley, sustainable transport policy officer for the Irish Environmental Network, said the increased traffic was worrisome for congestion and carbon emissions.
Mr Buckley told the IrishIndependent that 35pc of carbon emissions came from the transport sector in 2014 and this figure was now likely to have risen.
"The biggest impact will be on congestion and for the environment.
"Each individual will be-adding to the delays.
"In Europe, a quarter of emissions leading to problems with climate change come from the transport sector, this is where the impact is."
•
Strike threat at Irish Rail if staff don't get pay rises UNIONS at Irish Rail are threatening an allout strike this autumn if the company does not increase staff pay.
Iarnr6d Eireann staff are seeking flat pay rises, similar to increases seen elsewhere in the transport sector,
However, the company maintains that it is at risk of insolvency, with debts of €160m and losses forecast at €6m by the end of2017-
0n the first day of a five-week period of negotiations at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), Siptu assistant industrial organiser Paul Cullen said staff haven't received a pay increase in 10 years.
"We're here today to try to resolve this issue of achieving a flat7rate pay increase [between 2.75pc and 3pc per year] for our members. We feel that this is possible given the current financial situation within the company.
"With the increase in passenger numbers and revenue, we're now back to 2009 levels. Therefore, we feel that this flat pay increase is a reasonable request."
Mr Cullen added that if talks fail, unions would seek a mandate for industrial action.
"We11 make every effort to ensure that these talks don't fail, but nevertheless it requires both parties' co-operation," he said.
"If they o fail, we will consult our membership and seek a mandate from our membership."
Ciaran Masterson, director of human resources at larnr6d Eireann, said the company was prepared to review its efficiencies and savings. He believes an all-out strike would damage customer confidence and said the company remains under threat of insolvency.
"We've got to deal with the simple fact that as an organisation we are under threat of insolvency," he said.
It recently emerged that Irish Rail will look for more funding from the taxpayer - even if four of its most costly subsidised routes are axed. · The semi-Statecompany may also seek"additional Exchequerfunding" and increasedpayments from the FreeTravel Scheme.
