    The Call defines Cluster as:

    organised aggregates of enterprises, universities and other public or privateresearch institutions, other stakeholders including financial ones operating inthe innovation field,

    divided into multiple public-private gatherings, including the existingTechnology Districts, which are present on different territorial areas,

    guided by a specific Coordination and Management Body,

    focused on a specific technological and application field,

    suitable to contribute to the international competitiveness of both theterritories of reference and of the national economic system.

    Among the 8 thematic areas identified by the Call, andconsidered strategic for the development of the

    country,

    AgrifoodAgrifood is included as well which should have thepurpose of developing knowledge and technology forthe production of foods, also of marine origin, that issafer and featuring higher quality characteristics andauthenticity, even through greater sustainability andenvironmental impact in the use of resources.

    A Strategic Development Plan (5 years);

    Letter of Intent of the Regions affected by the Cluster (expression ofinterest in supporting the Cluster under specific Agreements with theMinistry of Research);

    4 Projects (industrial research + experimental development +training): Each project must have functional autonomy and will be evaluated

    individually.

    Economic dimensions of the project: 10 to 12 million euros.

    Max 8 proponents.

    Duration: 36 months for industrial research and experimental developmentprojects while the duration of the training project should not be less than 12months and not more than 36 months.

    At least 2 of the 4 proposed projects must be implemented within theframework ofinternational co-operation agreements in place or at startup.

    There is no facilitation for the management of the Cluster. Incentives will only be granted to the eligible costs related to

    the 4 projects (industrial research, experimental developmentand training):

    Industry players have to incur directly 50% of the total costs related toresearch, training, experimental development (of which at least 15%incurred by SMEs);

    Universities and Research Bodies have to incur directly 20% of the totalcosts of the proposal;

    Training activities: not less than 10% of the costs of the research project;

    Training activities: free grant of 100% of eligible costs.

    CL.A.N. is promoted and coordinated by Federalimentare, theItalian Federation for Food Industry, and by Aster, a Consortium

    of Emilia Romagna regional authority, universities, researchbodies and associations of entrepreneurs.

    CL.A.N. mission: safeguard and increase of the national

    economic systems competitiveness with regards to the food-production chain in all its parts, from agricultural production toprocessing and to the related industrial sectors (e.g. packaging,logistics etc.), up to the distribution and consumption, through

    the stimulation ofinnovation, the promotion of findings comingfrom scientific and technologic research and the collaborationamong research bodies, companies and public administration.

    Consistency with the Community strategic agendasand a strong commitment to the development ofinternational links are important requirements forthe Cluster CL.A.N. when making programmaticdecisions,

    also in view of the possibility to exploit the system ofrelations and the critical mass of the Cluster itself toincrease the success of project proposals to be

    presented in the context of the calls for the nextFramework Programme Horizon 2020 and theFlagship Initiativesof Europe 2020.

    The 11 Regions that have taken part to the Cluster

    are Emilia-Romagna, Apulia, Piedmont, Sicily,Molise, Tuscany, Abruzzo, Lombardy, Umbria and

    Sardinia.

    Other 8 Regions involved through companies or

    other regional stakeholders: Veneto, Campania,

    Lazio, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige,Marche, Basilicata and Liguria.

    The National Agrifood Cluster gathers the main stakeholders of the agrifoodsector from all of the productive sections, researchers on a national level.

    77 stakeholders (Associations/Federations/Organisations, Companies,Technological Districts, Universities and Research Institutions, Science andTechnology Parks, etc.) have submitted the Cluster CL.A.N. (they are involved inthe Governance and/or in the 4 projects).

    The following stakeholders have joint the Cluster CL.A.N. through an expressionof interest:

    n 87 Companies from the agrifood industry (both Big and Small/Mediumenterprises);

    n 5 Research Centres with autonomous legal status promoted by one or moreentrepreneurs;

    n 16 Consortia and Consortium companies majority owned by private;

    n 5 Science and Technology Parks;

    n 45 Universities, research institutions and research organisations;

    n 17 Associations / Organisations.

    1. Nutrition and Health: prevention of diseases associated to the diet (obesity,diabetes, and cardiovascular pathologies) and promotion of the health ageing(physical and mental well-being). APPROVED!

    2. Food Safety: production of natural antimicrobials, reduction of possiblechemical contaminants, and development of diagnostics systems for theabatement of the pollutants along the supply chain up to the consumer.APPROVED!

    3. Production: implementation, optimization and study of the new innovativeprocesses aiming at food quality. NOT APPROVED.

    4. Sustainability: reduction of the waste and valorization of the sub-products,their use for the other food applications and not, and reduction of the impactof the agrifood industrys processes, from the production up to the finalconsumer. APPROVED!
