Saints of the Week 7th Dec St Ambrose Bishop and Doctor of the Church. He was governor of Milan and in 374 the laity insisted that he become Bishop, though he was still not baptised. He was baptised and ordained in the following week. He defended orthodoxy with his preaching skills. Patron of Milan Dec. 11th St. Damasus I,
Pope, b.c. 304, died 11th Dec. 384, pope 366-384. He commissioned St. Jerome to pre-pare the Vulgate version of the Bible. Dec 12th St. Finnian, Bishop, settled in Clonard, Co. Meath, around 520, where he established a famous school. His pupils, among whom were Canice, Columba and Brendan, were the initiatiors of a great monastic expansion in Ireland. Dec. 13th St. Lucy, Virgin and martyr was a wealthy Sicilian who refused marriage because of her desire to be
consecrated to Christ alone, gave her wealth to the poor and was accused by a suitor to the persecuting authority. Lucy was killed by a sword. She is invoked for eye trouble.
