99 Announcement NATO ADVANCED RESEARCH WORKSHOP ON NATURAL MECHANISMS OF SUR- FACE GENERATED NOISE IN THE OCEAN This workshop will be held on June 15-19,1987 in Santa Teresa, Italy. The meeting is sponsored jointly by the Scientific Affairs Division of the NATO, the United States, Office of Naval Research and the Atmospheric Environment Service of Canada. The purpose of the workshop is to bring together specialists in the fields of geophysical hydro- dynamics and acoustics to focus interdisciplinary attention on the problem of sound generation, primarily by wind and rain at the ocean surface. An organizing committee consisting of B. Kerman, Atmospheric Environment Service, of Can- ada, L. Bjorno, Technical University of Denmark, A. Prosperetti of The Johns Hopkins Univer- sity, R. Hollett and R. Heitmeyer of the Saclant ASW Research Centre, La Spezia, has planned a meeting consisting of about 12 invited speakers and 30 contributed papers. Among the invited speakers who have agreed to attend are M. Longuet-Higgins, O. Phillips, D. Crighton, W. Kuper- man, D. Farmer, P. Crowther, S. Lloyd, A. Kibblewhite, A. Prosperetti and L. Crum. Topics which will be discussed include bubbles, wave-wave interaction, air and water turbulence, spray simu- lation and bubble entrainment, rain noise, near-surface propagation as well as breaking wave dynamics and wind-wave fields. Papers are invited on all aspects of natural sound generating mechanisms at the ocean surface, particularly on the observation, description and understanding of the various mechanisms by which sound is generated at the air-sea interface. Authors wishing to contribute are asked to forward an extended abstract to the Workshop Director, Dr. B. Kerman, Atmospheric Environ- ment Service, 4905 Dufferin Street, Downsview, Ontario, Canada, M3H 5T4 (tel. 416-667-4791 telex 06-964582).
