VOTE FOR NUST NSTP FOR HOSTING IASP WORLD CONFERENCE 2017 IN ISLAMABAD
It gives me great pleasure to share that the NUST National Science and Technology Park (NSTP), Islamabad, Pakistan, is one
of the two contenders for hosting the IASP World Conference in 2017. I am writing to you today to solicit your vote for NSTP during
the IASP World Conference in Beijing in September, 2015, that shall decide the host of IASP 2017. We are hopeful that you shall vote
for NSTP and, in so doing, promote IASP’s mission of internationalization and networking. For one, giving us your vote will
effectively promote innovation and entrepreneurship in Pakistan with considerable positive regional and global complementarities. As
an IASP member, your dual commitment of ensuring the success not only of your own park but also of the paradigm of science-based
development of economies, societies, and peoples not only in your own city or country but around the world will find more than
adequate fulfilment if NSTP succeeds in bringing IASP 2017 to Islamabad with your support. I shall elaborate further:
It is a fact known to many global companies working in Pakistan that its innovation space market is virtually a virgin land with
a potential value of billions of dollars. However, Pakistan’s status as one of the most promising emerging markets in Asia remains
understated till date. But this may change. As the locus of global business shifts from the metropolises of the West to the cities of the
East, the country’s socio-economic, demographic and S&T strengths make it a veritable treasure trove for global and regional firms
operating in electronics, healthcare, luxury goods, basic commodities, high-technology and knowledge-intensive products. With a
population of approximately 200 million, Pakistan is currently passing through a demographic youth bulge with around sixty percent
of its population under thirty. These teeming millions are not only in the prime of their lives but also are curious and tech-savvy
waiting to make the most of the mobile and internet revolutions that, like the rest of the developing world, have also impacted Pakistan
in the last decade. By 2020, the country shall be home to at least 4, or maybe more, megacities having a population of more than ten
million together with scores of medium-sized cities with population varying between two hundred thousand and ten million. With the
highest regional urbanization rate of more than 36 percent, Pakistan is witnessing the fastest growth in the numbers of city dwellers in
South Asia. Having experienced a meteoric growth in its higher education sector of more than 350 percent between 2003 and 2012,
the country is well-poised to experience the explosive growth of knowledge-based industries powered by a reasonably strong public
R&D base and a burgeoning young urban educated middle class. All this translates into big-sized business and profit opportunities
which will only be exploited by those companies that make the smart decision of investing and operating in the country well before
the first quarter of the twenty-first century ends.
NSTP, as the first university-based science park of Pakistan and a trail-blazer of the national science park movement, has
positioned itself to play a crucial role in the development of the country’s innovation space market. NSTP promotes new technology
and firm creation in next-generation materials, nanotechnology, high-tech and auto manufacturing, robotics, electronics, bio-tech,
information and communications technologies, energy, and smart agriculture. Well-connected to innovation hubs in North America,
Europe, and China, NSTP is all set to lead technology-led growth in Pakistan as well as the establishment of national innovation
systems with a focus on creating science-based socioeconomic value. The true potential of the innovation space market in Pakistan can
be realized if a global innovation event of the magnitude of IASP World Conference is held in the country. The event will prove to be
a watershed for the future of innovation in Pakistan and collectively provide the first-mover advantage to IASP members and enable
them to reap the rewards of early entry into Pakistan’s high-tech market. With the push provided by its playing the host to IASP
fraternity, building upon it and ramifying it in a sustained manner, NSTP will figure largely in the efforts of Pakistan to enter the
select club of economies with a GDP of USD 1 trillion and more by 2030.
The event will ideally focus attention on everything that is right with the country and the manifold advantages the country
enjoys in fostering entrepreneurship for accelerated domestic and regional growth. It shall reinforce Pakistani government’s drive for
public-private cooperation to spur city-based growth by focusing on urban clusters that enjoy variegated capabilities and strengths
based on specific patterns of demand and supply of different products and linking up with other cities in the mega-region that includes
Asia Pacific including China, Central Asia, South Asia, West Asia, and North Africa. This becomes apparent when we consider
Pakistan’s proximity to the untapped science markets of Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics along with the positive externalities
the event shall have for foreign companies doing business in China. IASP 2017 in Islamabad shall also create massive innovation-
based peace dividends in the region and allow the regional publics to come together in the beautiful city of Islamabad thinking of a
future based on common prosperity for all. Today the world is more interconnected than at any previous time in its history. We believe
holding annual IASP World Conferences in as many new and promising locations as possible can further extend the benefits of
internationalization and networking to all IASP members allowing them to derive the maximum value from the ceaselessly
multiplying global flows of peoples, ideas, and data.
Casting your vote for NSTP will give us an epoch-making opportunity to arrange for a world-class event in a world-class
manner in 2017. We look forward to journeying together with you toward IASP 2015 in Beijing and from there to IASP 2017 in
Islamabad with your support. You shall soon receive via courier the complete informational package for NUST NSTP’s bid for
hosting the 34th
IASP World Conference 2017 in Islamabad. I have listed after my name the contact details of my team members
working on different facets of our campaign for IASP 2017 and who shall also get in touch with you in the coming days in connection
with the same.
