A Letter from the Pastor
Fourth Sunday of Easter April 26, 2015
Dear friends in the Risen Lord,
Because it is the very heart of Christian faith, Easter is celebrated
for 50 days—a week of weeks!—in the Catholic Church. It is hard enough
for most of us to sustain our joy through the 8-day octaves that follow both
Christmas and Easter. But 50 days? Our lives inevitably move on to spring
break, final exams, graduations, Mother’s Day and a host of other celebra-
tions. Just as it challenges a parish to keep Easter flowers blooming in the
sanctuary for 50 days, families are often at a loss to know how to live out
the season of Easter at home—all the way to Pentecost Sunday.
A simple observance for parents during Eastertime is to offer a
blessing to children at bedtime, making the sign of the cross with water.
Kids will intuitively make the connection between this water and the water
at church in which they see children being baptized and with which they are
sprinkled at every Mass.
Easter is the season of “Alleluias.” The Alleluia we hear at Mass
before the gospel is a catchy tune that could be sung at the end of family
prayer time. At the very least, a spoken “Alleluia!” could be added at the
end of grace before meals and morning and nighttime prayers.
The trajectory of the Easter season is ever outward to the world.
The good news of the Resurrection, first entrusted to Mary Magdalene
alone at the empty tomb, is at Pentecost, proclaimed to all the nations. As a
consequence, anything we do—in our families, at work or at school—to
break down barriers and reach out to those different from us is also a noble
and worthy way to celebrate these 50 days.
Happy Easter still!
Your brother in Christ’s word and work,
2855 Briarcliff Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30329
Through worship, education, and service, we continue the work of Jesus.

FORMACION EN LA FE
ACTIVIDAD DE LA SEMANA
Elija una de las siguientes actividades para
seguir reflexionando sobre las lecturas del
domingo:
Jesús dijo: “Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz y
yo las conozco. Ellas me siguen”.
¿Adónde creen que Jesús dirige a su
familia?
ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
Choose one of the following activities as a
way to further reflect on the Sunday
readings:
Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice. I
know them, and they follow me.” Where
do you think Jesus is leading your family?
Give each family member a small box or a
shoe box. With markers, have each person
write his or her name on the box. Have
family members decorate the box with
symbols of themselves. After all have
completed the boxes, glue them together to
make a family totem pole. Talk about why
each family member was given his or her
name.
Spend time this week listening to the Good
Shepherd’s voice. Turn off the TV and
radio, the computer and video games and
spend time in silence each day. At the end
of the week, gather your family together to
talk about the experience.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Acts 4:8–12; 1 John 3:1–2; John 10:11–18 What could be more comforting than the images in today’s Second Reading
and Gospel? From the First Letter of John, we hear that we are children of
God. We are not just disciples or followers, but children. We have an intimate
relationship with our Creator. God provides only good things for his children,
and included in those good things is transformation. We are told at the end of
this reading that we will be like God. We will be holy. We will be saints, and
as saints we will see God. What could be better but to live with and see God?
The image from the Gospel resonates with us, even if we have never met a
shepherd and know little about sheep. We know from this reading that the
Good Shepherd would give up his life for the sheep, and that an intimacy
born from love exists between the two. We might consider here that the work
is not only the shepherd’s. Knowing someone requires spending time. Have
you left your relationship with God up to the Good Shepherd, or are you
doing your part by spending time alone in quiet with God, perhaps for a few
minutes after Mass? Or do you spend time alone with the Word of God to
know Christ? How have you taken the time so that you can know Christ just
as the Father knows him? Do you know the sound of the Good Shepherd’s
voice?

CUARTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA
Hechos 4:8–12; 1 Juan 3:1–2; Juan 10:11–18
Dios. No sólo somos discípulos o seguidores, sino hijos.
pastor, y apenas hayamos visto alguna oveja.
¿Has pasado
conocer mejor a Cristo? ¿Puedes distinguir la voz del Buen Pastor?

STEWARDSHIP
SPACE FOR ADS
April 26: Create your own endowment fund:
You can create a fund in your name or honor loves with a beginning investment of $5,000. This and other
gifts to the fund will be tax deductible. You can determine if the fund will benefit the parish in general or a
specific ministry in the parish. When the endowment reaches $25,000 it will pay out to the purpose stated
in the contract. This is a wonderful way to leave a Catholic Legacy, get a nice tax deduction and help the
parish for the future. For more details, contact: Diane Duquette, the Director of Gift Planning at the
Catholic Foundation of North Georgia: 404-497-9440 or email [email protected]. Visit the Catholic
Foundation website to learn about additional ways to create a Catholic Legacy.
LOVE ACTIVELY It isn’t enough to say we love God and others, we must show our love by acting on it; serve regularly
in a parish ministry, soup kitchen, food pantry, homeless shelter, hospital, assisted living facility, with
a family member or neighbor who is ill or elderly, or with children. As Blessed Mother Teresa
reminded us, we can do small things with great love!

SECOND COLLECTIONS
This week’s Second Collection will
benefit Catholic Home Missions. One
way that this appeal works to strengthen
home mission dioceses in the United
States is by funding seminarian
formation in poor dioceses. The blessing
of seminarians places a financial burden
on these dioceses, where educating each
seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these
young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes.
Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to
next week’s appeal.
