Holy Week Services at King of Glory-Williamsburg

Holy Week ends the season of Lent and enables us to journey with Christ to the first Lord’s Supper, the betrayal in the Garden, His arrest, suffering and crucifixion, all the way to the joy of the resurrection. Each day in the Holy Week experience is special and important and we encourage you to be part of each of the opportunities offered to you. Be sure to invite your friends and family as well.

Today, Palm Sunday: April 13 Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem Normal Sunday Service Times

Wednesday April 16 6PM: The Holy Week Experience (Sanctuary) There is no dinner or Growing Points this night This event is best suited for those in 7th grade and higher. Join the Christian Discipleship Training youth and their leaders in traveling around to different stations that walk you through the events of Holy Week. Begin in the Sanctuary as we join Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and hear His pleas to His Father. Travel through the events of Good Friday and experience the sights, sounds, and feelings of our Lord’s last hours on this earth.

Maundy Thursday April 17 5 PM: Traditional Stripping of the Altar (Sanctuary) This is a solemn service where we recognize the blessing of the Lord’s Supper and yet the betrayal of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. The service ends with the “stripping of the altar” that is taking all of the paraments and objects off the altar area, signifying the betrayal of Christ and the stripping of His dignity for the sake of our salvation.

5:30 PM: First Communion Service (Fellowship Hall) This worship service is open to the entire congregation. Please sign up at the Welcome Center or by emailing Tara Wolf ([email protected]) as there is special seating and dinner included. “Why is this night different from all other nights?” This question is asked every year at the Jewish Passover Seder meal. Every year up until Maundy Thursday, the answer was always expected. Then Jesus turned everything upside down and created a new covenant. Tonight, we celebrate this new covenant of communion through Scripture readings, songs, a meal and The Meal of the Lord’s Supper. Worship begins at 5:30PM in the Fellowship Hall and will include a meal of soup and bread.

Prayer Vigil Thursday April 17—Friday April 18 Beginning at the end of Stripping of the Altar service through beginning of 7:15 Tenebrae service

on Friday Sign-ups in the narthex. We dedicate these hours to prayer and meditation.

Good Friday April 18

Noon: Words from the Cross Good Friday is the day that Christ willingly gave His life in place for yours. This quiet and solemn service shares the passion story and all the words Christ spoke from the cross.

5:30PM: Good Friday Worship Experience Why is this day called “good” when it is the day that Christ died? Come and see, touch, smell, hear, taste and interact with different elements that help bring the events of Good Friday to life. Worship begins at 5:30PM and includes a self-guided tour of different stations in and around the Sanctuary. Come by yourself, bring a friend, or bring the whole family. Experience the Good News of Good Friday in a new way.

7:15 PM: Tenebrae Service This service is a reflective service as we consider the love God has for His people: so much love that He would die so that we might live. The service ends in darkness and silence as we consider the death of our Savior.

Easter Saturday April 19 5 PM Celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on Easter Saturday! This joy-filled service uses our contemporary worship band and leadership to celebrate the Resurrection joy. The message given on Easter Sunday is given at this service. This is a great service of praise and a good alternative to the crowds on Easter.

Easter Sunday 6 AM: Easter Dawn As the sun rose on that Easter day, the women went to the tomb only to find it empty. We will gather at 6 AM in the Garden of the Good Shepherd and then make our way into the sanctuary to celebrate the rising of the Son of God! A light breakfast is served following this service.

8 AM: Traditional Easter Celebration This service will use our traditional liturgy as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ.

9:30 and 9:45 AM: Blended Festival Services These services are nearly identical (same hymns, same readings, same message). The 9:30 AM service is in the Sanctuary and the 9:45 service is in the Fellowship Hall. No one comes to Easter services to sit in the Narthex. This year we will offer two services around the same time so that they do not have to. There will be a few child-friendly elements at the 9:45 AM service.

11 AM: Blended Festival Service This final service of the day will be a celebration of the Resurrection of Christ.

There are no evening services on Easter Sunday
