Basic Enzyme Information What are enzymes? –Enzymes are proteins. Proteins are made from amino acids. Different combination of amino acids will create different structures of protein. The structure determines function of protein (enzyme) Purpose –Acts as a catalyst for a reaction to take place. It simply lowers the needed energy for a reaction to take place. Enzymes are not used up in during a chemical reaction

Basic Enzyme Information
• What are enzymes?– Enzymes are proteins. Proteins are made
from amino acids. Different combination of amino acids will create different structures of protein. The structure determines function of protein (enzyme)
• Purpose– Acts as a catalyst for a reaction to take place.
It simply lowers the needed energy for a reaction to take place. Enzymes are not used up in during a chemical reaction

Enzyme Lab
• We are going to test the effects of temperature on enzyme activity.
• Liver contains the enzyme catalase which breaks up H2O2 into H2O and O2
– H2O2 H2O and O2
Proper lab write-up
• Introduction (paraphrase)• Hypothesis (which temp is best)• Materials (what did you use)• Procedure (what did you do)• Data and Observations (charts and
averages)• Questions (3 in the lab)• Conclusion (use data to state the best)
Lab Write Up Hints
• Neatness counts– If you can type it, you will receive more points
• Procedure– Write the procedure as though you will give it
to someone who never took biology• Graphs/charts
– Use graphs (labeled) and data tables
Homework
• SA 2-4 page 53 #1-5• Start looking at the back of the sheet to
