Please Help Support the SPHA!
January is “Membership Drive” month and we are encouraging all neighbors in our area
to join our neighborhood association—the South Pocket Homeowners’ Association
(SPHA).
Why should I join?
The SPHA and the SPHA Board play a vital and active role in preserving and improv-
ing the quality of our neighborhood.
The SPHA needs your participation and support to continue this effort.
The annual fee is only $45, while other comparable associations charge that much
per month!
Your annual contribution helps fund our Easter Egg Hunt, National Night Out, Yard
Sale, Email Alerts, Neighborhood Watch, Membership Roster, Quarterly Newsletter,
Maintains our Association Website, and More!
Become a Member Today! Easily join or renew your membership with the SPHA by com-
pleting the enclosed form and sending in your check today or applying ONLINE via our
website: www.southpockethomeowners.org
The enclosed membership drive letter provides information on the benefits of belonging
to the SPHA.

Announcing: A New SPHA Website
You may have noticed a while back that the SPHA website re-
ceived a makeover. The new website is crisp & clean, easy to navi-
gate, and mobile-friendly. It was built using WordPress, one of the
most popular website platforms out there. It’s full of information
about our neighborhood and our goal with the new site is to keep
everyone up to date with the latest news and any upcoming events.
We even have a blog now, which we hope you will subscribe to.
Some useful links you can find on the website include:
Please take a moment to visit the site at www.southpockethomeowners.org and ex-
plore each tab. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the new site, please let
us know by sending an email to [email protected] as we certainly
value your feedback.
Regarding the maintenance of the site, we’d like to ask anyone in our neighborhood
who’s a techie familiar with WordPress to be our IT support in the event we need help.
If you are interested, please email Christie Garcia at [email protected].

HOLIDAY PARTY A record number of neighbors gath-
ered again in early December at
Viento’s Café to ring in the 2014 holi-
day season with a member event spon-
sored by your South Pocket Home-
owners’ Association (SPHA). Besides
food, beverages, games and door prizes, this year’s annu-
al event featured an entire evening of musical entertain-
ment by professional musicians from Nagual, a 3-piece
instrumental ensemble, and featured vocalist Camryn
Elias, Pocket area resident and St Francis student. Also
featured again this year was the novel reading of the
“Left/Right Night before Christmas” with 24 guests tak-
ing home surprise gifts from Santa’s bag. Another 20
guests won door prizes donated by neighbors and local
merchants. Emcee for the evening was Alan Duran,
long-time resident on Sand River Court.
Thank you to the following local businesses and neigh-
bors who provided door prizes: Neighbors are encour-
aged to patronize the local businesses as a way of thank-
ing them for their generous contributions.

MARRIOTT PARK SECURITY
Late last summer, Green Valley Security cancelled our
contract for twice-nightly patrols of Marriott Park due
to the sweetheart pricing that we had been granted
by previous owners. Since that time, your Board has
been vetting the best security companies to replace
Green Valley through consultation with Sac PD and our
own interviewing. Because of the significant price in-
crease that the Association would incur, the Board has
postponed contracting with another security compa-
ny. We will discuss this topic at the next General Mem-
bership Meeting in June. Until that time, we are asking
everyone to be vigilant:
Call Sac PD for anything suspicious
Turn on porch lights on from dawn to dusk
Utilize NextDoor Pocket to communicate to your
neighbors
If you would like to discuss this matter prior to June,
please contact one of the Board members.

Flood Risk and Sacramento Alert – A notice issued re-
cently by the Department of Utilities, City of Sacramen-
to was titled: “Levees are not Sacramento’s only Flood
Risk”: “The risk of flooding in our community is not lim-
ited to just flooding caused by levee failures. It is not
limited to specific neighborhoods or even specific flood
zones. Our community also stands at risk of flooding
from dam failure. A vital piece of the flood control and
water supply systems in the Sacramento region is Fol-
som Dam, which sits on the American River. If Folsom
Dam were to fail, the water behind the dam would flow
very quickly downstream and could overwhelm the en-
tire City of Sacramento.”
The back side of the notification showed a map of the
greater Sacramento area including Folsom Lake. The
illustration was labeled ‘Folsom Main Dam Break – Max-
imum Inundation Areas’ and depicted almost the entire
City of Sacramento under water including the Pocket
and Greenhaven neighborhoods.
The notice offered a number of recommendations and
one of the most important is that the City of Sacramen-
to now offers Emergency Communication Alerts via the
EverBridge system. Through this system automated
messages will be sent to registered phone numbers
within the area impacted by an emergency such as a
dam break. Both landline and cell phone numbers can
be registered by going to:
www.sacramento-alert.org
We strongly urge you to sign up for these telephone
alerts as they could provide a timely warning and save
lives.

NEW NEIGHBORS!
Anita & David Salvador. Anita and David have been Pocket area residence since their marriage some 5 years ago but the new home at 1180 Smoke River Way (corner of Greenhaven and Smoke River) is the first home they have owned. When they met, Anita lived and worked as a nurse in Toronto, Canada and is now studying for her Board certification her. Her work in Canada fo-cused on infectious diseases and hospital administration. David, nearly a lifelong resident of the area and Kennedy graduate, is a systems analyst for the State of California and a member of the National Guard.
Corey Kai & Daanish Khan to the neighborhood and your new home at 19 Sand River Court. Corey and Daanish are not new to the neighborhood but new to their home on Sand River Court. They and their beautiful black lab just moved down the street and around the corner from Sleepy River to a home with a bigger kitchen in which to practice and enjoy their love of cooking. By day, Corey works for the Board of State & Community Correc-tions and Daanish for Sacramento County in Assessor’s Tax Re-fund division. Oh yes, they are both avid soccer players and fans too.
Amanda & Jeffrey Elmasian. Amanda and Jeffrey and their ador-able new puppy moved into their new home at 7679 El Rito Way in November 2014. While they previously lived in the Pocket area, they are first time homeowners and delighted to be in the neigh-borhood with so many beautiful amenities. Amanda and Jeffrey are both runners and are very active in the Bayside Midtown Church when they are not working. When time allows, Jeff en-joys a round of golf too. Amanda is a physical therapist at a nurs-ing home in Elk Grove: Jeff, also in the medical field is an s-ray technician at Mercy San Juan Hospital.
Brianna & Manuel Silvia. 7640 Roman Oak Way. By happen-chance, Brianna & Manuel discovered River Oaks Ranch while looking for a home to be closer to family. And they love the neighborhood with its lovely homes and especially Marriott Park. The Silvia’s met and studied at ARC and Sac State graduating with advanced degrees in accounting. Both are now employed as ac-countants for the State Employment Development Department. Non-work time is spent enjoying their new home, neighborhood and especially their one year old daughter.
