President’s Message Hamilton&DistrictHeavyConstruction(Hand)AssociationMembers: ItisanhonourandpleasuretoservemyfirsttermasPresidentintheAssociation’s51st anniversaryyear.ThroughthecontinuedeffortsoftheBoardofDirectorsandthededicationofourMembers,the Association remains strong and continues to grow, enlisting new members yearafteryear.ThispositivegrowthhasenabledtheAssociationtobecomearespectedandformidablevoiceinpromotingourindustry,protectingtherightsofourmembersaswellasbeingrecognizedforitscharitableandpoliticalinvolvementwithinthecommunity.TheAssociationiscommittedtoprovidingleadershipandinfluenceonbehalfofourmembersinaverydifficultanddynamiceconomy.We look forward tomanyyearsofcontinuedsuccessfortheAssociationandourmembers.

3rd President’s Student Scholarship Awards
ThroughthegovernanceoftheBoardofDirectors,aninternalcommitteewasformedtodeterminetwodeservingawardrecipients,whichisofferedtochildrenofsalariedemployeeswhoaremembersoftheAssociation.Thisyear,preferencewasgiven,butnotlimitedtostudentsenrolledinaconstructionrelatedprogram.Applicantswererequiredtosubmitproofofpostsecondaryenrollment,prioryearschooltranscripts,communityserviceefforts,aresumeandalsoanessayonwhytheyfeltdeservingofthisaward.Allapplicantsnameswerekeptanonymousduringthejudgingprocess.

2nd Annual Mohawk College Civil Co-op Program
ThisprogramisaimedtoplaceMohawkStudentswithmeaningfulworkexperiencematchingtheirCivilEngineeringTechnologyProgramcurriculum.Itinvolvesapartner-shipbetweenthreelocalemployerswhocommittothreestudentsoverthelifeoftheirworkterm.WiththeassistanceofMohawk’sCo-opServices,theHandAssociationworkswiththreeemployerstoarrangeeachstudent’splacement.

ThestudentswereprovidedwithinformationpackagesincludingadetailedoverviewofuniqueandexcitingcareeropportunitiesintheHeavyConstructionIndustry.Thestudentswereservedlunchfrom“PitaPit”,complimentsoftheLabourer’sUnionofNorthAmericaLocal837andtheInternationalUnionofOperatingEngineersLocal793.
6th Annual High School Construction Day EventOurAssociationincollaborationwiththeOntarioConstructionCareersAlliance(O.C.C.A.)andtheHamiltonSeparateandPublicDistrictHighSchoolOntarioYouthApprenticeshipDepartmentshostedits6thAnnual“HighSchoolConstructionDayEvent”onThursday,May25,2017.Withthegrowingconcernofskilledlabourshortage,twobusloadsofseniorhighschoolstudentswereinvitedtoexploreacareeropportunityinHeavyConstruction.

College and University Scholarship AwardsThroughthegeneroussupportoftheOntarioSewerWatermainConstructionAssociation(OSWCA),theHamilton&DistrictHeavyConstruction(Hand)Associationhasestablishedand maintained several scholarships encouraging students to pursue educationalprogramsrelatedtoourindustry.
These scholarships are as follows:
1. In2003,the“TheHamilton&DistrictHeavyConstructionAssociationScholarship”was established atMcMaster University to be awarded to the student who, inthe judgementof theDepartmentofCivilEngineering,hasachievedoutstandingacademic recognition. The 2017 award was presented to Katherine ElizabethBarclay–CivilEngineering/ManagementLevelV.
2. In2005,a“SewerandWatermain&RoadConstructionScholarship”wasestablishedatMohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology. An awardwasprovidedtothestudentswhodemonstratedfinancialneedandhavecompletedtheirfirstyearofstudieswithatleasta70%G.P.A.andenrolledinCivilEngineeringTechnicianorTechnologyorConstructionEngineeringTechnician.
2017 awards were presented to:

RemonEssa,CivilEngineeringTechnologyprogram 2nd year.

OnWednesdayMay24,2017theCityofHamiltoncommencedthe“YouthinConstruction”pilotprogramincollaborationwiththeabovepartners.Thisinitiativewasdesignedtoempower,educateanddevelopopportunitiesforyouthandleadthemtomeaningfulandsustainableemploymentinskillstrades.
Outoftwentythreeapplicants,eightyouthbetweentheagesof19to29whomayrequireextrasupportandmentoringwereselectedtoundergoLifeSkillsTrainingaswellasConstructionCraftTraining.
Alongwithtrainingsubsidyfunding,HandAssociationmembersprovidedemploymentwithemphasisonmentorshipinefforttohelpguidethemtoabetterlife.
Tender Practices
In1988theAssociationestablishedaTenderPracticesCommitteetoworkwiththeCityofHamiltonandareaMunicipalServiceRepresentativesonissuesrelatingtothetendering,awarding and administering of sewer, watermain and road and sidewalk constructionprojects.QuarterlymeetingswereheldandhostedbytheAssociation.
