Winner (Individual)Fiona GascoyneMidwife“Fiona ensured we saw the rightpeople quickly and cried with usas we lost our baby girl at 22weeks pregnancy. She quietlyfollowed our progress over thenext two years, appearing just atthe right time with her completeunderstanding of how we felt,to help us have our baby boy.”

Joint Winner(Team)Critical Care Unit and Mersea Ward“I and the staff team who sup-ported a patient, who tragicallypassed away on 10th July, wouldlike to say thank you for theexcellent care he received, bothfrom the Critical Care Unit andMersea Ward.“The nursing staff on both

wards treated him with respectand dignity throughout his stayand the overall quality of carewas exceptional. “The nurses were so empa-

thetic, and also emotionally sup-ported our staff team throughwhat was an extremely difficult

and distressing period.“How pleasant it was to see

nursing teams with such a posi-tive attitude, team ethic andtogetherness that enabled themto deliver such a high quality ofcare in which we can only imag-ine, at times, are very difficultcircumstances.”

Joint Winner(Team)Children’s Ward“My daughter has just been dis-charged from an eight day stayon the Children’s Ward. “Due to previous experi-

ences at the hospital with mydaughter I was apprehensive tosay the least about her admis-sion to the ward. I could nothave been more wrong! All staffwere fantastic, the nurses espe-cially. They were at all times car-ing and compassionate.“I was always kept well

informed on my daughter’sprogress and the nursing staffwere very accommodating withregards to her autism andADHD. They were flexible withvisiting so I could get a breakwhen people could visit onlyafter 7pm. The hospital and theward deserve a big pat on the

back because it has nowbecome a place that I don’t nec-essarily dread, and people willbe quite happy to stay there. Iwant to say a great big thankyou to all the staff who helpedlook after her and made ourhospital stay a nice experience, especially Naomi and Emmawho never failed to make melaugh. And Donna who todaydid put up with me asking quitea lot ‘when can we go home?’.“A massive thank you and

well done to everyone.”

Winner (Volunteer)Pauline Batten“Pauline has assisted the radio-therapy department admin teamenormously over the last fewyears and particularly recentlyshe has worked almost full-timeduring a very difficult period ofvacancies and long-term sickleave.“The department could not

have managed during this diffi-cult time without her.“She is kind, considerate

and always has a smile on herface which enhances the staffand patient experience enor-mously.”

Colchester Hospitals Charity (CoHoC) is a registered charity(registration number 1051504). It helps Colchester HospitalUniversity NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) to do more for

its patients. Often, there is a new piece of equipment, more up-to-date technologies, and newer fixtures and fittings that willimprove the patients’ environment.
