Dear Friends of Lawrence Academy,

I am delighted to include my thoughts and thanks in this year’s Annual Report.As you will see in the following pages, 2012-2013 marked a crucial step forwardin Lawrence Academy’s fundraising prospects—prospects that are outlined onthe big scale by ambitious goals of, in Board President Bruce MacNeil’s words, “doubling the Annual Fund and doubling the endowment in the near future.”

Obviously, there is a bottom-line effect of such a revenue-increasing project, andI do not want to minimize either the challenge of the project or the significanceof the anticipated result. Nevertheless, as I think of summiting our fundraisingprospects, the goal is as much about attitude as altitude. Lawrence Academywants to be a place that promotes an instinctive, positive, and productive response in its orientation to stewardship. We want to be a place with a sixthsense for opportunity and possibility. We want to be a place that considers itselfworthy not just of its past, but of its future.

In my first weeks as head of school in the summer of 2012, I got a VIP-guidedtour of the archives from Dick Jeffers and Paul Husted. One set of prints fromthe Dr. Samuel A. Greene collection caught my eye. These often colorful printscelebrated some of the local happenings of the time, from public meetings topublic announcements, to advertisements for agricultural fairs. One vibrantposter advertises the Groton Fair of 1904, proudly declaring: “Succeeds BecauseIt Deserves Success” (among other colorful phrases, including, “A Horse ShowIn Itself”). I liked the print so much, I had it reproduced and framed, much toDick and Paul’s delight.

While I am not sure that Lawrence Academy can emulate the spectacle of being“a horse show in itself,” I do believe that Lawrence Academy can maintain theattitude that it “succeeds because it deserves success.” We deserve success becausethe education we offer, the setting in which we offer it, and most of all, the honest belief in the benefit we provide young lives, provide a platform for development, accomplishment, and transformation. Our success is part of thelarger progress of all good human initiatives, driven by the fundamental humandesire to grow and thrive. Success breeds success, and so we grow stronger.

The success of our fundraising efforts shows this can-do, must-do, will-do attitude, in whichprogress, creativity, and growthare the organic principles thatdrive the institution and its constituents. How fortunate weare to each be able to contributeto that cause in our variousways. There will always be inspiring and imposingfundraising prospects before us;it is my hope that our responseto such prospects will always begenerous, not purely in the financial sense, but in the investment in heart and mindand confidence involved.

ALumni GivinGEach year the Annual Fund relies oncritical philanthropic support from LA’s Alumni, and in fiscal year 2013,Lawrence Academy received 38% of itstotal Annual Fund from alumni contributions. Senior Parent Capital GiftAs Co-Chairs of the Class of 2013 SPCG,Ted Bernhardt and Peg O‘Brien Bernhardtand Debbie and Steve Barnes, led thecharge toward the most ambitious andsuccessful SPCG in the 16 year history ofthe fundraising campaign. While the initialplan sought support for the Annual Fund,the faculty laptop program and othertechnology upgrades and improvements,a vision took shape to add a Media Conference Center to the list. 89% of the Class of 2013 parents contributedover $450,000 to the campaign and contributions from Trustees and grandparents of the Class of 2013, helpedbring the total contribution to more than$500,000, making this year‘s SPCG themost comprehensive and productivecampaign. Anderson Foundation, Inc., a supporting organization for the BostonFoundation, for a $5,000 grant designated for the conservation of Volume II of the Dr. Samuel A. Green“Broadsides” which represent the history of Lawrence Academy and thetown of Groton. Lawrence Academy acquired a collection of six broadsides,assembled and preserved by formertrustee Dr. Samuel A. Green. Thesebroadsides, all original items, reflect Dr. Green‘s efforts to capture theessence of life in a small, New England town from 1850 to 1915. Thebroadsides have now been shown tothe Groton community and are captured in a slide show on theLawrence Academy website. Theyhave created collaboration withtownspeople leading to the advancedawareness of the history of the town.
