Raising the BarFor the first time in six seasons the

NJCAA Volleyball Preseason rank-ings were released and the NIC Lady

Cardinals were nowhere to be seen. Soccer polls surfaced, but the names of NIC did not in either poll.

“I wasn’t shocked, but still it was some-what surprising to an extent,” said NIC Ath-letics Director Al Williams. “I guess I’m like everyone else. You begin to take success for granted.”

It wasn’t long before the Cardinals ap-peared in their usual spots for national con-sideration. Despite having their 4th head volleyball coach in 5 seasons, the Lady Car-

dinals are currently ranked No. 16 in the polls with a record of 10-6, and all losses to nationally ranked teams. They have been in the polls since the first in-season rankings were released. for a chance to compete for a national title, and play in the best conference in the nation!” The exposure isn’t too shoddy. Men’s basketball had 7 NCAA Division I signees in 2013, and the Wom-en’s national champion basketball team devel-oped starters for Arizona, Oregon State, Southern Methodist, South Alabama and the NAIA National player of the Year. Wrestling had the NJCAA Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2011, and Men’s Golf, Volleyball and Softball send athletes to the prestigious Southeastern and Pac-12 Conference.

“There are times that I wish I could have a charter bus travel around parts of town and pick up fans just so they could see the level of tal-ent that comes through the doors at NIC. They would be amazed at the level of competition in the NJCAA. “ The price of entertainment is rea-sonable for family entertainment, and it’s always competitive. And we have the best popcorn in town! With the rosters becoming complete for the winter sports the goals are the same for all of the programs. The Coach’s Showcase, held at the Coeur d’Alene Resort last month, disclosed a common theme amongst the NIC coaches… We are competing for a Regional Title, with a shot at a National Championship!

Come out and follow the journey! Go Cards!!

The North Idaho College Booster Club is a nonprofit organization, committed to providing financial support to all recognized intercol-legiate athletic programs at NIC through various fund-raising and en-dowment activities for student ath-lete grant-in-aid and team benefits. Organized in the 1960s, the Booster

Club supports all NIC recognized in-tercollegiate athletics as a lifelong learning experience that will enhance the value of sportsmanship and pro-vide a positive experience for stu-dent athletes, students, and fans. The club also recognizes the commit-ment our athletes make to the young people of our community through our

athletic Cardinal Kids outreach pro-grams. The Booster Club holds vari-ous fund-raising events throughout the year including an annual auction, awards banquet, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and golf tournament. It also sponsors a booth each year at the North Idaho Fair and operates a con-cession stand at all home events.

common spot amongst the top 20 annually. “People don’t realize how competitive our Re-

gion is for all sports. If you are the Region 18 champion you are a national contender…in every sport!” The national tournament results speak for themselves. In recent years NIC alone has ac-counted for multiple top ten finishes. Softball was a National Runner-Up in 2007, Women’s Soccer placed 3rd in 2008, Volleyball has finished 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th in the past 7 seasons, and in 2013 Women’s Golf finished 9th and Men’s Golf 22nd.

With the team success comes individual acco-lades, and this past season NIC was rewarded with 10 All-Americans, with an additional 5 recognized as NJCAA Academic All-Americans. These num-bers have become common on an annual basis. “There was a time when only Wrestling was re-ceiving All-American recognition regularly, but now NIC is known for developing outstanding athletes across the board.” Every NIC intercol-legiate program, with the exception of Women’s Golf, has earned an NJCAA All-American over the past 5 seasons. The turnaround of the program has been phenomenal, and the credit goes to our exceptional coaching staff, supportive administra-tion and strong Booster Club. “You can’t be na-tionally recognized if you are only a regional pro-gram. We are fortunate to compete in the NJCAA, which has over 550 member colleges, the largest intercollegiate athletic organization in the US.”

The national exposure has attracted athletes re-gionally, nationally, and internationally. “We have a tremendous talent pool for our program from the northwest, with the exceptional high school programs in Idaho, Spokane, Seattle and Portland. However, with referrals from Division I schools and former athletes we also gain interest from ath-letes from multiple locations. “Our rosters have tremendous diversity, which you wouldn’t expect in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The athletes come here

VOLLEYBALLThe Volleyball team is now 10-6 for

the season. The team walked away with a preseason record of 7-5 playing many top ranked teams in the nation. The Cardi-nals opened SWAC play this week with a road sweep of USU-Eastern and Colorado Northwestern C.C.

The first pre-season week was played at Salt Lake Community Col-lege where the team played the Pre-Sea-son No. 1 ranked team in the NJCAA -- Western Nebras-ka. The match took 5 games but NIC fell short losing a tight match in the 5th game. The team rebounded after the loss to beat Casper Col-lege and USU-Eastern in three games each. In the last match of the tournament, the Cardinals played Western Wyoming who beat NIC in 4 games.

The following weekend, the team head-ed off to the College of Southern Idah0, where the team played the No. 7 ranked team in the NJCAA - Miami Dade, and the Cardinals walked away with a “W” in 3 games. NIC then played No. 11 Hutchin-son Community College, and the team won an exciting 5 game match. Day two saw the Cardinals lose to current No. 1 ranked Blinn College in a tight five game affair. The team closed the tournament with a win against Laramie College in 3 decisive games.

The Cardinals ended their preseason schedule at Northeastern Junior College’s Pizza Hut Invitational, where the team once again faced off with Western Nebraska in their first match. Unfortunately, after winning the first game, the team was not able to come away with a win and lost in 4 games. The team then came back and won their next two matches versus Casper College and Seward County Community College, coming away with identical 3-0 2 wins. The last preseason match saw the Cardinals take on No. 3 ranked Iowa West-

ern Community College, but the Cardinal were unable to overcome a strong Iowa Western team and lose in straight sets, 0-3.

After two weeks of conference matches, the Cardinals are 3-1 in the SWAC. The Cardinals opened conference play with road matches, beating USU-Eastern and Colora-do Northwestern Community College, both in 3 games. The NJCAA No. 16 ranked Cardinals finally returned home to Chris-tianson Gym in week two to face No. 12 ranked Snow College and No. 8 Salt Lake Community College.

We were excited to open our home schedule after a long stretch on the road and appreciated the fans that came out to root for the home team.

The exuberant crowd helped the Cards rally from two games down to defeat a tough Snow team in 5 games. The Cards couldn’t duplicate the effort against SLCC. After winning game one, the Cards lost 3 tough games, losing games two and three 23-25, and game four 25-27, to fall into a tie for second place in conference.

We have the makings of a good team, but it is important to remember that the qual-ity of the SWAC is very high with 4 teams ranked in the top 16 in the NJCAA. We have been playing some very strong teams in the last month and we hope this helps prepare us as the SWAC competition gets tougher.

We’ve had some solid performances this year, with Leeta Grap, Larissa Claassen, Anyssa Matheson and Russia Robinson - SWAC Player of the week 3 weeks ago – having noteworthy performances during pre-season. There is a lot of season left and every game in our conference will be com-petitive. It is important to come prepared and ready to play our game the rest of the season.

WOMEN’S SOCCERWe are halfway through the season and

our record is 4-6-2. It doesn’t look as good as it should, but we still have 4 games left to attain a .500 record and and qualify for the district tournament.

We’ve been plagued by injuries so far and that has definitely slowed our progress.

Whitney Reichold, a center midfielder/

center back, is undergoing ACL surgery as this article goes to print. Meghan Pagano, a forward from Sandpoint, had surgery on her right ring-finger after dislocating it and having the tendon pull away from the bone while playing Laramie County.

Jamie Gates , our starting right back, suffered a wrist injury and is just returning to full strength while Tay-lor Hoffman , an outside back, will have surgery to re-move scar tissue built up around her replaced ACL and may also need a meniscus repair.

Tiffany Draper, a forward, has a kidney infection and Jamie Hulst, another forward is suffering from tendinitis in her Achilles. Kelsi Parson is trying to play through a high ankle sprain.

Whew! That doesn’t include all the nor-mal bumps, bruises, and strains that occur normally throughout a soccer season.

In spite of the injury list, the players are very positive about their chances to make it to postseason play. Sometimes it is oppor-tunities such as these that help a team come together and they all step up to the chal-lenge of overcoming obstacles. We have yet to see our best play, but I feel it is coming very soon!

Go Cardinals!

MEN’S SOCCERMen’s Soccer is off to its best start in the

last three years and is 8-4-2 after 14 games. The strong start can be attributed to the Cardinals’ goalscoring prowess. The Cardi-nals have already scored 31 goals this year, surpassing last year’s total of 21.

Sophomore John Ray has and will con-tinue to score goals, and freshmen Rodger Bucknor and Adam Talley currently lead the team in scoring with six and five goals respectively. Combined, Bucknor and Tal-ley have missed eight games due to injuries.

Tanner Jones’s increasing command in goal is making the team better each week,

and converting Will Mecier and Alec Johnson from attacking positions to the back line is beginning to pay off.

The Cardinals have a distinct advantage in midfield, as the program is one of the few in the country that starts two former USSF Academy players in central midfield with Christian Botuli and Shane Stanley.

Stanley and Botuli have combined for five goals and four assists from defen-sive roles and fre-quently initiate the attack after winning it in the defensive half of the field.

T h e m e n a r e playing a competi-tive October sched-ule, defeating Co-lumbia Basin 1-0

and Community Colleges of Spokane 4-0. The Cardinals then host nationally ranked Dakota County on the 11th at 4pm. The Cardinals’ final two games will be on the road in Seattle. On the 16th, they’ll face 2012 NWAACC North Division Champi-ons Edmonds College. On the 17th, they’ll need the depth as they take the field against Highline CC.

MEN’S BASKETBALLSeveral former NIC Men’s Basketball

players are currently playing basketball at university’s and several are playing profes-sionally. Many of our former players are getting ready for their upcoming collegiate season: James Webb (Boise State), Jalil

Abdul-Bassit (Or-egon), Chris Sar-baugh (San Diego) Mike Hope (Adams State) Mike Mid-dlebrooks (Illinois State) Jordon Mc-Cloud (Glenville State) and Keon Lewis, Kaj Sher-man, and Edrico McGregor will be reunited as team-mates this year at

the University of Texas San Antonio.Former All-American Michael Hale has

finished his eligibility at Texas San Antonio but is still there this year completing his de-gree. Once Hale finishes his degree he will head overseas to play professionally. An-toine Hoisely will be sitting out this year at Montana State University Billings but will be playing there next year.

Several Cardinals are playing profes-sionally. Renado Parker (Finland), Mac Hopson (Argentina), Guy Marc Michel (Greece), Brian Morris (Romania), Harry Disy (France), Shawn Henderson (Fin-land), Bayo Arigbon (Chili), Idris Lassisi (Belgium) and Kerry Williams (Australia) are representing NIC all over the world. Melvin Jones is playing in the ABA league with the Seattle Mountaineers and BJ She-arry has an NBDL draft camp coming up soon.

We are very proud of all our alumni!

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLThe Lady Cardinals have been on cam-

pus and in the gym for over a month now and we are extremely pleased with their ef-fort, focus, and mental toughness for such a young group.

Sophomores Jansen Butler, Maggie Kirscher, Renae Mokrzycki, and Geor-gia Stirton have done an excellent job of providing early leadership for the nine freshmen. Georgia Stirton returns at point-guard after a Second Team All-American and SWAC Player of the Year freshman season. Renae Mokrzycki has returned from summer playing her best basketball to date with extreme inside/outside versatility. She is primed to make a consistent impact on the conference this season. Jansen Butler and Maggie Kirscher are experienced and mature sophomores. Look to them to make great things happen on the court.

Joining us in the post positions are Cait-lyn Behymer, Sabrina Earle, and Panisesi Taimani (Princess). Behymer, from Okano-gan, WA, is a four-time All-Caribou Trail League selection. She is versatile with a wide variety of post moves and the ability to hit outside shots. Earle, from Medical Lake, WA, was Second Team All-North-west A League as a senior. Her athleticism

and ability to run the court with be invalu-able to the Lady Cards this season. Taimani, from Kennewick, WA, is extremely smooth around the basket and has surprised us with her nice outside touch.

Morgan Grier, from Spokane, WA joins us at the wing position. She was Shadle Park’s High School’s Most Inspirational Player as well as team captain. Katie King, from Post Falls, ID, helped lead Post Falls High School to the state championship last season as their point guard.

Bailey Schroeder, from Benton City, WA gives us versatility at either the guard or wing position. Averaging 22 points a

game as a senior, S c h r o e d e r w a s named the SCAC East League MVP as well as her team’s MVP.

K a r a S t a g g s , f rom Okanogan , WA is a four-time All-Caribou League First-Team selection. She is a two-time league MVP, three-time team MVP, and

2012 state tournament MVP while leading Okanogan High School to the state cham-pionship. Kara has the ability to score any-where on the court, is a tough defender, and brings her championship mentality every day.

Ryleigh Swagerty, from Burlington, WA, led her high school team to three con-secutive state championship placings. As a senior she was a Northwest Conference Second-Team selection as well as earning First-Team All-Skagit Valley honors. An all-around, versatile guard, Swagerty brings tremendous depth to our point-guard posi-tion.

Mariah Swanson, also from Burlington, WA, has the ability to play guard, wing, or small forward. She is the two-time Skagit Valley Player of the Year as well as two-time First-Team All-Northwest Conference and two-time team MVP. Swanson, the lead-ing scorer in the state tournament her se-nior year, also broke Burlington-Edison’s season and single game records for steals.

The NIC Wrestling team exemplifies the WE CARE spirit embraced by the NIC Athletics Department. Head Coach Pat Whitcomb and the wrestling team garnered donations from community members and companies to provide school supplies to local families in September at Riverstone Development. Domino’s Pizza also donated pizzas for families as they waited in line. Thanks to our donors and sponsors that allowed us to give back to the community.

With nine freshmen and only four re-turners, our ability to turn freshmen into sophomores quickly will be a key. How-ever, all the pieces seem to be in place to do so and we are looking forward to a great season.

Finally, we would like to wish all our alumni who are still playing at four year schools the best of luck this season. They are Kama Griffitts (University of Ari-zona), Korina Baker (Southern Method-ist University), Katie Buskey (Fairleigh Dickinson University), Julia Salmio (Nova Southeastern University), Dan-ika Johnson (Hawaii Pacific Univer-sity), Angela Woods and Mollie Kramer (Central Washington University), Aimee Durbidge (St. Edward’s University), and Kabri Emerson (Montana Tech).

SOFTBALLWe had a successful alumni game

in September. We had 18 alumni play. The NIC team squeezed out a marginal win of 3-1.

Our fall scrim-mages are sched-uled for October 5th, October 6th, October 12th, and October 19th.

A l l s c r i m -mages start at 1 p.m. at Memorial Field. The team

is working hard and taking advantage of the nice weather.

We’re looking forward to seeing ev-eryone out at Memorial Field this fall.

DON DON WILLIAMSSOFTBALL

Former NIC Men’s basketball player Winston Brooks completed his playing career at Gonzaga Univer-sity. Brooks is cur-rently on the Coeur d’Alene police force, and after playing overseas profes-sionally he now competes in body building shows in his spare time.

On October 7, Capones on 4th St. donates a portion of proceeds from sales from the entire

day in celebration of their 20th Anniversary. Thanks, Capones, for your support!
