OLV NEWS Thank You for a Fantastic Start to the School Year!

A very special thank you to our parish community for supporting Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School as we begin our 2018-19 school year. School started on Wednesday, August 8th and our OLV Parent Teacher Organization had a wonderful Back to School

Bash on Satruday, August 11th for our School to celebrate—see pictures below. Thanks also to parents and students who participated in our annual clean-up day. Both our school and athletic fields look great for use by both our school and church

community. OLV School students are settling into their school routine, enjoying their academic classes and getting ready to start the many extracurricular activities offered at OLV. With the support of our parish, OLV students have a firm foundation of faith and a close-knit caring community in which they are growing in their relationship with Jesus Christ. More information about the school

is available on the web at OLVBirmingham.com. __________________________________________________

OLV Preschool Admissions

If you have a Preschool-aged child, then OLV Preschool still has a few spots available for your child’s early childhood education. There are programs for three and four year olds with convenient hours and the option for extended care as well. For over 30 years,

OLV preschool has offered an excellent curriculum combined with lots of fun, developmentally appropriate activities in a caring, faith-filled environment. Children who begin their education by attending the OLV Preschool grow in their love of Jesus, discover a love for learning and form a foundation that helps them to transition with ease to kindergarten. There are still openings available in

both 3K and 4K, so call 205-991-5963 now for admission materials! Discover more about the OLV preschool program at www.olvbirmingham.com.

TRAVELING VOCATION CHALICE

This weekend we resume the Vocation Chalice at Saint Mark. This is a wonderful program which allows families to host the

Vocation Chalice in their home for one week while praying for vocations. To begin the year, we thank the Elie Family for hosting

the chalice this week. They will receive the chalice at the 10:30 a.m. Mass Sunday.

“Wherever God has put you, that is your vocation. It is not what we do but how much love we put into it.” ~ Mother Teresa

If you would like more information on the Vocations Chalice Program,

please contact Kristin Sessions (205)529-6356 or [email protected]

Our Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a fundraiser

to benefit the Youth Programs!

Specifically, your purchase of Labor Day meals form their

BBQ sale will help make it possible to offer a week-long

summer retreat to Lifeteen’s Covecrest Camp.

All orders must be submitted

by Sunday, August 26th

Edge is a Catholic middle school youth ministry program. It

provides a safe fun place for youth to find solid Catholic

community, to get answers to their questions about faith, and, most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound

and personal way. present Catholic teaching in a way that

young people can understand.

Thank you to all families for attending our first edition of Whole

Family Catechesis. Our next session will be Sunday, October 28.

PSR Children will report to their classrooms this Sunday, August 26. If you have not yet

registered for PSR, please do so immediately. Forms found online and in church office. Late fee of $20 applies.

ULTRASOUNDS TO SAVE LIVES CAMPAIGN

Looks can be deceiving. Parishioner Brian Cameron needs a living donor kidney transplant, although looking

at him you would never know this to be true. Recently he has been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease. Please

contact UAB at 1-888-822-7892 – option 4 or uabmedicine.org/kidneytransplant or Daagye Hendricks at 205-975-0643 for more information. Let them know you are calling on behalf of Brian Cameron, DOB 3/12/1949. You might also conact Brian or Mary Rose at 205-862-

0199 or at [email protected]. Please pray for Brian and for a potential donor to come forward.

The Knights of Columbus established its Ultrasound Initiative to

equip medically certified prolife pregnancy care centers (PCCs) with

modern technology that will enable expectant mothers to see and

hear their babies in utero. The Knights of Columbus works together

as an organization to purchase ultrasound machines for qualifying

pregnancy centers. Alabama Ultrasound Initiative Chairman Lee

John Bruno, one of our parishioners, recently reported that 25

ultrasound machines have been placed in Alabama since the start of

the program. The machines, like all technology do age, so there is a

cost involved in replacing machines as they suffer wear and become

obsolete.

After the state and/or local council raises 50% of the cost, the

Knights of Columbus Supreme Council will provide the other 50%

to complete funding for purchase of an ultrasound. Or, if the council

raises 100% of the cost of a vehicle outfitted to serve as a mobile

medical unit for a pregnancy center, the Supreme Council will

provide 100% of the funds for an ultrasound machine to be used in

that vehicle. On the weekend of August 25 and 26 the Knights will

be collecting contributions for the Ultrasound Initiative in the back

of the Church. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated; this

initiative literally saves lives - 85 percent of the women who elect to

have an ultrasound ultimately decided to have the child.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is

offering an educational program for family members of

people living with mental illness. The class will teach

coping skills and problem-solving of the people closest to

an individual living with a mental illness. Class is FREE and

is a 11 week commitment. The class will be offered at St.

Vincent’s 119, 7191 Cahaba Valley Rd., on the main

floor, conference room A beginning September 10 to

November 26, 2018. Time 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. For more

information or to register contact Laura at 205-267-2986;

or email [email protected].
