ANNEXURE VII
The two Best Practices adopted by the college are as given:
FIRST BEST PRACTICE
1. TITLE
Literary and Cultural Enlightenment
2. GOAL
The aim of our institution is to make our students excel in every field, be it academics,
sports or co-curricular activities. In the session 2013-14, we have started Prof. Gurbir
Singh Sarna Memorial Inter College Art and Literary Competitions.
3. CONTEXT
We at GNW, value the importance of literary and cultural events as these events preserve
our culture and promote the feeling of universal brotherhood. Sharing of cultural and
literary knowledge make us responsible people who can co-exist with each other in a
harmonious society.
4. THE PRACTICE
Following methods are adopted by the college to encourage this practice amongst the
students:
A number of societies and clubs function in the college throughout the year to
encourage students to participate in various literary and cultural activities.
The teachers also encourage the students to organize various exhibitions such as
handicrafts, painting, heritage items etc.
Various inter-class competitions such as Quiz competition, Declamation contest,
poetical, IT Quiz competition, Giddha, Mehandi, Flower arrangement, Rangoli
etc. are conducted to inculcate the feeling of competitive spirit amongst the
students.
Various colleges are invited to participate and show their talents in Prof. Gurbir
Singh Sarna Memorial Inter College Art and Literary Competitions.
5. EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS
The success of our endeavor is visible through the whole hearted participation of students
in various extra co-curricular activities.
Twenty two colleges of and around Ludhiana participated in Prof. Gurbir Singh
Sarna Memorial Inter College Art and Literary Competitions with great
enthusiasm.
Padma Shree Dr Surjit Patar, an eminent writer of international acclaim was the
chief guest on the occasion and he shared his literary experiences from his vast
reservoir of knowledge.

As a result of these constructive and ongoing practices in our institution, our
college was able to bag 17 positions in Zonal and Inter-Zonal Youth and Heritage
Festival 2013.
6. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
The biggest challenge was to prepare students to come forward to participate in co-
curricular activities apart from managing their academics pressure.
…………………………………………..
SECOND BEST PRACTICE
1. TITLE
Inculcating Reading Habits
2. GOAL
We at GNW always encourage the students towards reading of various types of books
apart from their curriculum as reading develops the mind and helps to discover new
things.
3. THE CONTEXT
The aim of our institution is to develop reading spirit as this is essential to succeed in
society. Reading books improves vocabulary as well as communication skills. Books help
students to express their thoughts in a speech by enriching their vocabulary.
4. PRACTICE
Following methods are adopted to inculcate readings habits among the students.
“Book Introduction cum Book Exhibition” was organized in this session in which
books by various publishers were displayed.
Dr. Narinder Singh Kapoor, eminent Punjabi writer inaugurated the
exhibitition. He shared his views with the students.
Our library is well stocked with latest books and journals on various subjects
ranging from general to text, reference books, encyclopedias, periodicals, daily
newspapers etc.
We subscribe 59 journals and periodicals, 23 magazines and 18 newspapers.
A facility of separate open shelf library is also available for post graduate
students.
5. EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS
The positive transformation is visible through this practice in our students.
Our students make maximum use of books in the library.
The concept of open book shelf corner for postgraduate students is very helpful
for making their projects, assignments as well as general reading.
Reading habits have definitely made our students more knowledgeable and
mindful apart from fetching various university positions in academics.
This habit is showcased in the shape of quality articles contributed by our students
in the college magazine “ Chandan-Boor”
AQAR 2013-2014 Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana Page 66
Reading inculcates confidence which is shown by the participation of students in
various literary competitions such as creative writing, declamation, poetical
recitation etc.
6. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
The problem which we encountered is to change the mindset of students towards reading
as they are more inclined towards the use of latest electronic gadgets. Moreover there is a
lot of pressure of curriculum which leaves quite less time at their end for reading of
general books.
