KOLLEL DIRECTOR / OPERATIONS

Rabbi DavidSpetner

Introduction

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the CincinnatiCommunity Kollels Annual Meeting. This meeting has beenorganized to give the community at large a picture of theKollels operations. In the next hour, you will hear reports onthe Kollels on-site and off-site avctivities, view video testimonyfrom our participants, and be inspired by our guest speaker,Rabbi Shlomo Morgenstern. The Annual Report in your handscontains our activity reports, as well as staff bios, an incomestatement and balance sheet, and an alphabetical list of ourcontributor base.

In Israel, every seventh year is a sabbatical year, and justsuch a year is drawing to a close next week, with the advent ofRosh Hashanah. The Kollel, though, is just beginning itsseventh year, and it will be no sabbatical! We look forward to abumper crop of Torah learning, in the Kollel and throughoutthe Jewish community.

What is our Community Kollel? At its core it is a makomTorah, a place dedicated to the study of Torah. The Kolleloperates with the philosophy that, more than any other spiri-tual or physical asset, it is our Torah and the study of it thathave kept our people alive throughout the millennia. It is thegoal of our staff to share the beauty of Torah study throughoutthe Cincinnati Jewish community and, through that, to helpeach Jew draw closer to their Judaism.

We call the Torah Etz Chaima Tree of Lifeand, like atree, in order to bear fruit it must have roots deep within theearth. In order to share Torah, our staff must be deeply rootedin their own dynamic Torah study. Our staff scholars maintain

KOLLEL DIRECTOR / TORAH STUDIES

Report on On-Site Learning

two daily study sessions, each three hours in length, where in agroup format they probe, study, and analyze the Torah. Thisdaily effort is led by my co-director Rabbi Meir Minster. Thestudy of these last two years has yielded the completion of oneof the longest and most intricate sections of the Talmud,Tractate Shabbos. The formal completion, known in Hebrew asa Siyum, will be made by Rabbi Minster, as he reports on theKollels on-site activities.

Our Mission Statement reads: To enrich the CincinnatiJewish community by creating an environment of Torah studyand and providing access to our spiritual heritage. Anyonewho has stepped into the Kollels Beis Midrash (study hall)understands how an environment dedicated to Torah studyenergizes Jews to pass on their heritage from generation togeneration. But to provide education to the members of acommunity, you must meet them where they are, and theKollel has done that, by partnering with a host of communityorganizations. Our Outreach Director, Rabbi Yitzchok Preis, has effectively led that charge, overseeing all of the Kollels off-site learning opportunities.

We look forward to the coming year and the opportunity totouch the lives of ever more Jews with the beauty of Torah.

DURING ITS FIRST SIX YEARS, the Kollel has completedthe study of four tractates of the Talmud, covering practicalareas of Jewish living. We began with the study of Chullin, which deals with the laws of kashruth. This was followed by

Niddah (the laws of family purity) and then Berachos (the lawsof blessings and prayer). Most recently, we have spent the pasttwo years studing Shabbos.

Before we make our Siyum, our formal completion, of thetractate Shabbos, I would like to take a moment to describe thedaily activities of our Beis Midrash. Beis Midrash translatesliterally into a study hall or place of learning, but in our case itis much more. Besides serving as the physical hub for much ofthe Kollels activities, the spiritual impact of the Torah we learnthere permeates and drives all that we do.

The celebration of a Siyum serves as a good analogy for thisidea. At a Siyum we do not describe the completion and mas-tery of a subject as an end, but instead as a beginning. Weexpress the hope that we will return to learn the same materialonce again. Building on what we have already acquired, we canapply this knowledge to discover and reveal even more than wehad imagined the first time. Mastery also allows us to apply thisknowledge to other areas of learning and, in a practical way, toincorporate it into our lives. Most importantly, we are then ableto share that knowledge with others. That is why it is tradi-tional to invite guests to a Siyumeven those who have notparticipated in the learningbecause it is a source of joy forthem, as well. Everyone benefits from this learning.

This is the essence of the Kollel. From our own learningcome the Torah insights that we are able to share with others. Our day is anchored by our personal study. In the morning ses-sion we attempt to master specific areas of halacha (legal con-clusions), while in the afternoon we survey the entire tractateat hand, gaining an appreciation for the context from whichhalacha is derived. Not any less important, however, is the com-munity learning which we view as flowing from these sessions.

From five-thirty in the morning until after ten oclock atnight, members of the community can be found learning in theBeis Midrashwith the Kollel staff or on their own. They aretaking time from their schedules to incorporate the beauty ofTorah into their day. Whether studying one-on-one at break-

The vibrant Beis Midrash described by Rabbi Minster is onlyone of many bases of Kollel Torah study. Kollel learning oppor-tunities permeated the greater Cincinnati community this year. The Regency in Hyde Park, Pilders Deli, and the clubhouses atHarpers Point, Carrington Crossing, Indian Creek, andBishops Gate, were all hosts to Kollel learning experiences. Anongoing, home-based study group in Blue Ash was added to ourregular classes, as well.

As we look toward the new year, we look forward to bring-ing learning opportunities to these and other locations. Aweekly class at The Regency is planned. A Shabbat/HolidayWorkshop is scheduled at Indian Creek. We will also be part-nering with the Sycamore Senior Center to provide classes totheir constituency.

fast, lunch, or during our evening community session, or byjoining a class, lunch-and-learn, or our very successful YesodeiHatorah programwhere participants acquire the skills tolearn on their ownpeople are finding their lives enriched bythe Torah.

Perhaps our proudest moment is at Father and Son Learn-ing, where parents, grandparents, and children gather onwinter Saturday nights, filling the Kollel building to capacity. The sweet sound of Torah being passed on, from generation togeneration, is truly inspiring.

gramsessions are scheduled there in November and February.I should also note the classes that have been presented in

conjunction with our downtown partner, the DowntownSynagogue and Learning Center. Hebrew Reading CrashCourses and an ongoing weekly Torah Portion Class are alreadytaken for granted. But expansion is in progress. I would like totake this opportunity to introduce Rabbi Ben Travis. RabbiTravis is now serving as the Downtown Synagogue and Learn-ing Centers spiritual leader and educator. Rabbi Travis hasalready added new classes to the weekly schedule and looksforward to continuing to provide the downtown communitywith more Jewish offerings.

We are excited to announce the upcoming opening of aJewish Learning Center in the Communicare building, just offthe Reed Hartman Highway, near Cornell. Rabbi Spetnerspopular Lunch-and-Learn will soon be joined by many otherongoing opportunities in that neighborhood. A Torah Baboker,Friday morning Torah portion study series will hopefully kick offthese new opportunities, right after the holidays.

The Kollels Lag BaOmer Bonfire is already a well-estab-lished, greatly anticipated annual event. This year CampLivingston also tasted the ruach and inspiration of a Kollelbonfire, as the Kollel shared songs and stories with Livingstoncampers and staff. A repeat performance next year has alreadybeen guaranteed.

The Kollel has and will continue to provide Shabbat hospital-ity and quality Jewish experiences for students at U.C. Last yearthis broadened to include Jewish U.C. faculty members andresidents of the surrounding Clifton neighborhood.

Rabbi Zev Weiner now leads the weekly Discovering Judaismdiscussion group in Oxford. I must make mention of the greathospitality of the Miami U. Hillel. They have done everythingthey can to accommodate Kollel families for the several Shab-batons we have run there. The students, Hillel staff, and Kollelfamilies all find these Shabbatons to be enjoyable and inspiring.
