School Garden Project strives to help Lane County schools develop onsite vegetable gardens where we teach children standards-based science and the basics of growing food, using the garden as an outdoor laboratory. We also provide material and curriculum resources; professional development for educators; volunteer recruiting and training; and maintenance support to sustain and expand educational gardens throughout our region and beyond. We are committed to a future in which children become healthy adults who eat fruits and vegetables, know the basics of growing food, steward the natural world, and contribute to a thriving community. Our in-school educational programs deliver Next Generation Science Standards-based curriculum, while providing the opportunity for students to participate in hands-on science activities in an outdoor setting. By bringing students into their own school gardens, they learn science skills by putting their hands in the soil, and they learn to eat well by growing vegetables themselves.

STEM in the GardenSchool Garden Project continues to build Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) resources for garden education, both during the school day and afterschool during the 4J BEST Program for students in low-income schools.

School Garden Project is recognized as an emerging local leader in STEM curriculum design and implementation, providing curriculum resources, teacher consulting, and direct STEM in the Garden education. With School Garden Project support, both students and teachers are learning to use math, engineering, and technology in the garden to make their own discoveries about key scientific concepts such as nutrient cycling and pollination.

Professional Development

Through the support services program, School Garden Project provides organizations in Lane County and beyond with seeds, starts, consultation, and tools. This year, 33 gardens were provided with 750 packets of seeds, and over 7,500 plant starts. Our sincere thanks to Down to Earth, Territorial Seed Company, and Aurora Innovations, Inc. for their donations that made this support possible!

To help build community capacity for garden education, School Garden Project delivered workshops, and professional development to classroom teachers, garden educators, and other members of the community, both locally and at the state level. Programs included methods for all teachers to use the school garden with their students, inclusive practices for garden education, and outdoor classroom management strategies.

Smarter, healthier, more active kids who love eating vegetables, appreciate the natural world, and know how to garden! Those are the out-comes we aim for, and those are the results of your investment in School Garden Project. With your generosity, our programs expanded again during the 2016-17 school year, enabling nearly 1,400 local students to learn in their own school gardens. Thank you! We invite you to continue with us on this path to bring more and more Lane County children into their gardens to gain science skills, learn about the natural world, acquire a taste for vegetables, and get a little dirt under their fingernails.
