PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I have much pleasure in presenting the Annual President's Report to the Union for our Centenary season.

The season was an outstanding success, commencing with the Dinner

and Launch of the Centenary Book in October and finishing with the

presentation of Shields to clubs winning the top grade in each of our

member associations at the conclusion of their season.

My sincere thanks to the many who contributed to this success and in particular our

Centenary Chairman in John Toogood along with Peter Barnes for the Dinner and Wright

Shield Competition and Rod Patterson for his all‐round support and efforts behind the

scenes to ensure things ran as well as they did. To Graeme Fischer a huge thanks for

putting together the history and personalities of the Union over its 100 years. John

Toogood will give a more comprehensive report on the celebration elsewhere.

At the 2012 AGM Mark Keating returned, replacing Chris Hatzistavrou, which meant all

members had previous experience and this no doubt contributed to the smooth running

of affairs throughout a busy season. John Wilson took over from Chris in running the

Junior Carnival and maintained the high standard of this competition over the years. Our

thanks to Chris for his time on the Board and I have a feeling we may see him again very

soon.

Mark Keating was elected to the position of Vice President at a Board meeting following

the AGM and we again invited the VTCA to be represented and Pat Quinn continued in

that role.

Apart from the Centenary celebrations we continued our participation in the Game

Development sub‐committee and progress continues to be made in many areas. The

Veterans cricket issue has moved slower than anticipated and it may be that the Union

needs to introduce its own competition for all age groups in order to get state and

national recognition for this sector of the market. A task force is addressing the issue of

turf cricket in the metropolitan area and our associations all need to be actively involved

to ensure the best outcome is achieved for both turf and synthetic competitions.

Our Wright Shield and Junior Carnival were again outstanding successes and those

involved are to be congratulated on the professional manner in which these competitions

are conducted. The highlight this year was the Wright Shield final played at the Junction

Oval, the venue for the first carnival 100 years ago. A well attended function ensured a

good crowd to watch CMCA defeat DDCA in a good quality game. This capped a great

season for CMCA who also won the U12 Mitchell, U12 Browne and U14 Allen Shields in

the Junior Carnival.

We played our annual challenge against the VCCL at Casey Field where again our visitors

ran out winners but against a much more determined effort from our team. Cranbourne

CC were welcoming hosts and the day was enjoyed by all.

In summarising, the season was everything we could have expected, and perhaps more.

I commend all Directors for their enthusiastic involvement and again wish to

acknowledge the contributions of Rod Patterson as Administrator and Bruce Dowland

who managed to keep our significant Centenary finances well in order during the season.

Retired ‐ Satisfied.

This is not an entry you will see in a cricket scorebook anywhere but is my personal diary

reflection having decided not to stand for nomination after 12 years in the privileged

position of President of the VMCU.

When CV proposed the introduction of Regions in 1999 several association Presidents felt

the then CUOV had not been sufficiently active in negotiating on this issue. As a group

we set about instigating change to the Union, proposing changes to the Constitution and

the election of Board Members based on the new Regional Structure. I believe the work

those people put in to revitalising the organisation has served it well in the intervening

years and now would be an appropriate time to recognise their efforts. The main

contributors were Peter Barnes (DDCA), Tony Isaacs (VTCA), Graham Muir (NWCA), John

Park (CMCA), Paul Reid (DVCA), and myself (ECA). For the first time in the history of the

Union a candidate from our member associations was elected President and I received

that honour knowing that we needed to become more relevant both in terms of our own

membership and forging a stronger position and relationship with CV.

Others can make their own assessment but I believe we largely achieved both objectives

and I point to such things as jointly initiating the Community Cricket Advisory Group

which has grown into the Game Development Committee as a recognised sub committee

of the CV Board, the new Constitution and Directors Structure, establishing and

expanding a Junior Carnival that supports the CV Pathway program and gives

neighbouring VCCL associations an opportunity for their juniors to compete and improve

their skills. As a major contributor to the Game Development sub committee we initiated

a review of the metropolitan regions that resulted in adjustments more suited to our

present and future needs and highlighted the need for a review of Turf cricket below

Premier level which is now under way. We also contributed to the introduction of a

Member Protection Policy and various other guidelines covering Working With Children

legislation, a heat policy and other similar guidelines.

Our engagement in these projects certainly lifted the profile of the Union as the

spokesperson for community cricket in the metropolitan area and, by extension, the

work being done by each association to promote and develop cricket through their clubs.

Countless people were involved in making this happen both at our Board level but also

extending to people on sub committees, association delegates and managers and

coaches of Junior teams. You should all be well satisfied with the contributions you have

made to the VMCU and the development of the game in general. It is a tribute to these

efforts that Victoria leads the field in every measure of junior development and

participation.

The ongoing challenge is to continue the growth and strength of existing associations and

look for new avenues to develop the game. Associations need to ensure their thoughts

are made know to the VMCU Board where they can be collated and directed to higher

levels of administration where they can be discussed and acted upon.

On a personal level I enjoyed the challenge of learning more about our member

associations and representing their interests to the wider cricket community. I

appreciated the opportunity to work with CV staff and leaders of the other affiliates with

the objective of taking our game forward. In particular I received substantial support and

encouragement from Bob Merriman and Geoff Tamblyn in their capacity as Patron of the

Union during my term.

I will miss the closeness of these working relationships but I hope the friendships we

established will endure long in to the future.

To my successor, and those who will ensure the VMCU continues to play a major part in

the development of cricket in Victoria, I wish you every success and my on‐going support.

ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT

The VMCU centennial season has concluded another successful season of cricket within the metropolitan region of Melbourne. It all started back at the Annual Meeting which had all affiliates return, except Heidelberg District Cricket Association which, unfortunately had to disband.

The Ausian Cricket Association was made a full member after some early teething problems were sorted out. The Union held various functions throughout the season to mark its centenary and there are reports within this document, which covers those events. Sadly one of our Life Members in Des Nolan passed away in September of 2012. At the Centennial Dinner the VMCU President paid tribute to Des saying he would have thoroughly enjoyed the evening, mingling with all those within the cricket fraternity. The U21 Wright Shield underwent change as the number of teams fell away. The number of playing days was increased to 4 with semi finals and a final. The VMCU thanks all the Premier and Sub district clubs which allow us the use of their facilities to host these important games for the young cricketers in metropolitan Melbourne. The Junior Carnival also saw change with Chelmsworth Park not being available for the first time in over 10 seasons as the Banyule Council decided to have water harvesting on the back ovals. However the other grounds chosen were a good substitute. The Union attended all Cricket Victoria delegates’ meetings, being represented by Kevin Noy or Rodney Patterson. Also, the meetings of Cricket Victoria’s Game Development committee, where we continue to strive to bring association issues forward to improve cricket for our members. The regional councils continue to refine their workings as all involve become familiar with what they are trying to achieve. In closing the President, Kevin Noy has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket administration. The Cricketing bodies of Metropolitan Melbourne owe him a debt of gratitude for his work within the Union, as he has strived to make this peak body relevant for both its members and to Cricket Victoria. TREASURER’S REPORT

It is my pleasure to present the Financial Statement and Balance

Sheet for the Centenary year.

As a result of significant support from Cricket Victoria and the

decision several seasons ago to earmark and invest funds for the

Centenary Year the VMCU was able to adequately finance all the

Centennial activities.

In addition a provision has been created to promote, develop and expand the

participation of girls as part of the VMCU Shield competition.

A smaller provision has also been set up to construct and create a VMCU Honour Board

as a permanent and ongoing acknowledgement to those who have contributed to the

VMCU in Senior Executive positions.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT

To the members and committee of the Victoria Metropolitan Cricket Union (VMCU). Scope I have audited the Treasurer’s Report, being the Statement of Income & Expenditure, Balance Sheet and supporting notes to and forming part of the financial report of the VMCU for the financial year ended 30 June 2013. My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material misstatement. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion as to whether, in all material respects, the financial report has been presented fairly in accordance with Accounting Standards, and statutory requirements, so as to present a view which is consistent with my understanding of the Union’s financial position and performance, as presented by the results of its operations and cash flows. Audit Opinion In my opinion, the Financial Report of the VMCU presents fairly in accordance with the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act, the assets and Liabilities at 30 June 2013, the Receipts and Payments and the Profit & Loss Statement of the VMCU, for the year ended. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SUB COMMITTEE

News Items ‐ Promotion Opportunity:

The MyCricket platform provides VMCU member Associations and their Clubs with the option to display briefs of our three most current news items and events on their homepages. This is a huge advantage for metropolitan wide promotion via our website that was not previously available and one that few have thus far taken advantage of.

A quick survey of Association websites linked from our members’ page indicates that most have opted to have VMCU news briefs displayed on their sites. If we can a similar level of uptake at Club level would anything promoted by us as a website news item can expect extensive coverage across Metropolitan Melbourne. The VMCU traditionally provides online promotion ‘free‐of‐charge’ to Member Associations and their Clubs of such as fund‐raising events, lobbying for a coach etc. With only limited uptake this valuable resource is grossly under‐utilized.

Cricket Victoria Statewide Twenty20 Cup:

Since this competition began in 2007/08 the only essentially complete record of results has been maintained by the VMCU. With no other continuous web presence it is disappointing that participating Clubs and Regions have increasingly declined to provide information about their progress for publication. Exhaustive searches of participants’ websites have also, with few exceptions, exposed a decided lack of information online.

For the last two seasons we have been fortunate that Cricket Victoria has provided the match results retrospectively allowing our dedicated webpage to be updated. However, being ‘after the event’ this provides visitors with no advance notice of game‐day information and no idea of the teams’ progress.

Better promotion of this series is needed in future. Without a presence in MyCricket competition management and/or a return of its dedicated website, it is unlikely that this Statewide twenty20 knockout series will grow in stature and attract future sponsorship.

MYCRICKET COMPETITION MANAGEMENT

Advertising Opportunity

During our 2012/13 centenary we made use of ‘round labels’ in MyCricket’s “Draw Management” function to promote a small number of advertisers. The program only allows a line of text with no formatting but this is enough to display an advertiser’s name and phone number or short url. “Draw Notes” can then be used to direct visitors to your website for extra information if necessary.

Transfer Function:

Cricket Australia’s MyCricket support team has advised that our 2012 proposal to modify the system’s online transfer functionality, allowing Associations the option of preventing its use for de facto player clearances, has gained in principal endorsement. It is intended that the recommended changes will ultimately

CENTENARY SUB COMMITTEE

Over a two year period, in preparation for the VMCU’s centenary, more than a dozen meetings of the sub‐committee were held. This was in addition to numerous other meetings between individual members, sponsors, suppliers, caterers, event managers etc. Where applicable a variety of locations around metropolitan Melbourne were used (eg. Essendon, Jolimont, Blackburn North, Burwood, Knox, North Dandenong, Mulgrave, Wheeler’s Hill, Moorabbin) in part to make sure excessive travel wasn’t a greater burden than necessary on those from any particular region.

Our Centenary Dinner on the evening of 26 Oct ’12 effectively launched what would be a season heavily ‘spiced’ with reminders of the preceding 100 years. A feature of the dinner was our launch of “A Centenary of Grass Roots Cricket ‐ A History of the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union”, more than 250 A4 pages of comprehensive research compiled by Graeme Fischer.

The event was also notable for another reason. Tony Charlton AM accepted an invitation to be our Master of Ceremonies declining any payment for doing so, a magnificent gesture from a ‘giant’ in sports broadcasting. Unbeknown to anyone at the time this would be one of his last official engagements. Tony lost a long battle with cancer just over seven weeks later.

Centenary Neil Wright Shield Grand‐Final Luncheon ‐ For what has become a traditional event, this season’s luncheon was enhanced and expanded upon in special recognition of the competition and its historical association with the Cricket Union.

The VMCU’s Neil Wright Shield competition has a long pedigree that can be traced right back to the inaugural season of the then “Victorian Junior Cricket Union”. The premier team for 1913/14 was awarded the “V.C.A.” Shield in what was at the time an under‐25 competition won by the Victorian Junior CA defeating South Suburban Churches CA. Notably, that final was played at the Junction Oval St Kilda just as it was in our Centenary season 2012/13.

There have been some other changes during the past 100 seasons with the age limit changing first from under‐25 to under‐23 and later in 1967/68 to under‐21 which it is today. The name has also changed, since 1994/95 both the competition and silverware have carried the name of Mr H. Neil Wright, a VMCU Life Member since 1977/78, in recognition of his more than 40 years of service.

In our Centenary season it was fitting that this final return to Junction Oval for the clash between Dandenong District and City of Moorabbin CAs. Sadly it appears that other than its geography none of the venue's features present in 1913/14 survive, the oldest remaining structures having been demolished in the 1980s. The grand‐stand in use at the time of our inaugural grand‐final was purchased from the old Elsternwick racecourse and erected in 1892.

It was subsequently replaced in 1924 by the "G. P. Newman Stand", much later re‐named in honour of football legend Kevin Murray. The "Kevin Murray Stand" is still in use as is the "Don Blakie ‐Bert Ironmonger Stand" (1934) both of which, together with much of this 'purpose‐built for cricket' venue, are now listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (No. H2234).

Centenary Shields were provided for each grand‐final winner in VMCU Competitions and the top grade of each member Association. Of the following 21 VMCU member Associations, 19 have been allocated a Centenary Shield each for their winning Club (bracketed) in the top grade of competition.

Online Honour Board ‐ Thanks primarily to research for preparation of the book ‘A Centenary of Grass Roots Cricket’ all Officers, Executives and Directors of the Union since its inauguration have been identified. This has allowed substantial additions to our online honour board and for many more of those listed we now are able to add comprehensive profiles.

Recognition ‐

Significant Sponsors funding the celebration of our centenary season were ...

Cricket Victoria who’s board generously made available a special purpose grant establishing them as our 2012/13 “Major Sponsor”.

Kookaburra Sport funded provision of all our Centenary Shield requirements earning them “Gold Partner” status. They also expressed interest in the establishment of an ongoing relationship.

Volunteers were probably the most critical resource necessary for successful delivery of our centenary program. All of the committee members (listed below) warrant our appreciation for their contributions of time and out‐of‐pocket expenses. Notably ‐

Graeme Fischer researched and compiled the centenary book.

Peter Barnes produced a newsletter and coordinated the centenary dinner providing all of the audio‐visual displays.

Other tasks undertaken by members of the sub‐committee included budgetary and financial management (primarily by VMCU Treasurer Bruce Dowland), the search for sponsors and advertisers, arranging for the provision and presentation of centenary shields, printing and distribution of the book, organising the Wright Shield Grand‐Final Luncheon, a range of hands‐on tasks at both the centenary dinner and Wright Shield grand‐final luncheon ...

Long ago Andy Lambert (East Doncaster CC) threw himself into a search of archived print media for the benefit of his own Club and those Associations with which it has teams registered (ECA & BHRDCA). Since his inclusion on the ‘VMCU Heritage Committee’ he has, in collusion with others, begun to ‘cast a wider net’.

The sub‐committee is grateful also for assistance provided by VMCU Administrator Rod Patterson and President Kevin Noy.

Ongoing Research ‐ The planning of Centenary celebrations and associated records search for the book has fostered an interest in the rich heritage of community cricket that will hopefully continue. To this end our “Heritage Committee” has begun the ongoing task of gathering information in partnership with other like minded organisations and individuals. Many Clubs and Associations have conducted varying degrees of research and published some or all of it online. The work of their respective heritage committees and independent heritage groups harvesting this information in addition to library archives will be a major future resource to complement our own efforts.

REGION REPORT

REGION 9 WEST METRO

The West Metro region comprises the following competitions: the Williamstown & Districts Cricket Association (WDCA), the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association (WSUCCA), the Western Region Junior Cricket Association, the Melton Junior Cricket Association and some clubs from the North West Cricket Association. As well, there are 6 sub‐district clubs, numerous VTCA clubs and 4 ladies teams in the region. The past year has been a successful season for all competitions.

Participation The participation levels in terms of the number of teams in the above associations are as follows: 210 senior teams, 196 junior teams and 4 ladies teams. There are 55 clubs occupying 148 ovals. There are 535 accredited coaches and 164 accredited umpires. The In2Cricket program has 1107 participants (2012: 1269). As well, the T20 Blast program attracted 52 participants in its initial roll‐out year. At school level, the T20 Blast schools cup had 2,420 participants, the In2cricket skills program had 4,020 participants and the AASC (after school program) had 825 participants. One area for improvement is to ensure the region’s clubs are aware of when and where the school programs are being conducted, so that the link to club level can be reinforced. WE have 101 school ambassadors, who we need to utilize more. During the year, the WRJCA held three girl’s sessions which attracted four teams from the region. We hope to grow this program during the coming season and hold sessions more regularly. Pathway Squads The region participated well in the pathways programs, with 16 wins overall against 13 losses. The teams finished around the 5th to 8th position in their grades. The male teams won 8 out 9 games in the preliminary rounds but fell short at the quarter final stage. The best performed female team was the U16’s who finished with a 4‐1 record. We believe that we are continuing to improve the process and if keep doing that, the results will follow. VMCU Shield The region competed well in all VMCU shield competitions, with the MJCA fielding 2 teams and the WRJCA 5 teams. All teams represented their association well and played the game in the right spirit on the field. Results were slightly disappointing with four of the teams winning two games.

REGION 9 REPORT Facilities Grounds continue to be a challenge in the region, but there is progress being made. More lobbying by CV with councils in the region would help. Good news is that Wyndham Council has a clearly defined cricket strategy which entails more new grounds in a number of locations. A new facility for the Point Cook area, including a new turf wicket and one totally synthetic ground, will be up and running for next season. Hobson’s Bay completed a new turf wicket planned for Langshaws Reserve in Altona North. A new turf wicket should be up and running in the Melton region for season 13/14. This will be only the second turf wicket in the area, outside the sub‐district ground. The City of Maribyrnong is looking at adding potentially 5 or 6 new hard wickets to cater for future growth.

REGION 10 NORTH WEST METRO

Season 2012/13 was the second year of the newly merged North West Metropolitan Cricket Association (NWMCA). Another successful season, albeit with the usual bumps along the way. The Association comprised 60 member clubs, an increase by one! It is anticipated that a number of new clubs will be joining the Association from areas further north – discussions continue.

Major issues – Now & into the future.

During the 2012/13 member club Roxburgh Park merged with Sub‐District club, Broadmeadows

to form the Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc. The newly combined club fielded 14

senior & junior teams in the NWMCA along with teams in Sub‐District.

Discussions are taking place between NWMCA member club Greenvale and Premier Cricket

team North Melbourne with a view to a merger. If successful the merger will see the club

headquartered at Greenvale. It is anticipated that the merged club will field senior teams in the

Premier & VTCA competitions and will continue to field senior and junior teams in the NWMCA.

The final outcome of discussions, which include Cricket Victoria, relevant local cricket bodies &

local government, will not be known until mid 2013 at earliest.

Twenty 20 Cricket

The new Association ran a successful Twenty20 mid‐week competition which was ultimately

won by Haig Fawkner overtaking last year’s winner, Merlynston‐Hadfield, in the penultimate

over.

The NWMCAT/20 competition comprised six qualifying rounds prior to the finals. A total of 12

teams competed, down by four on the previous year. The number of teams participating was

not encouraging, more work will need to be done to promote the game & gain more support

from the member clubs or the future of this competition may be at risk.

Junior Development

Following the creation of the new association no significant change to the number of Junior

teams participating occurred. A total of 181 junior teams completed the season, worryingly

down by 51 teams on the previous season, comprising Under 10’s, 12’s, 14’s & 16’s.

REGION 11 NORTH METRO

The North Metro region again conducted a successful T20 competition with 42 clubs competing this season. NMCA club Rivergum won their second Regional T20 title and this gives them the right to represent the Region in next season’s Statewide Cup. Ten HDCA clubs were successfully integrated into the two remaining VMCU

affiliated associations. Following a period of uncertainty it is expected that the region will remain relatively stable. Junior Development is a shared concern and all regional stakeholders are working hard to develop successful strategies to recruit and retain junior players. REGION 12 INNER SOUTH EAST METRO

The Inner South East region consists predominantly of the Southern District and Churches Cricket League (SDCCL) incorporating Premier clubs Prahran, Hawthorn‐Monash University and Richmond and sub –district clubs Oakleigh, Mount Waverley and Malvern. This year we welcomed a new Regional Cricket Manager in John Hayes. John

has an extensive background in Premier and sub‐district cricket with strong connections to community cricket and is well placed to understand the needs of all clubs. John has quickly endeared himself to the Region 12 community with some fresh and innovative ideas for the region, showing a genuine passion for all clubs and competitions within. A number of boys and girls were selected in representative sides for the region, Hatch and league. Competing under the Inner South East Scorpions banner, the region had a mixed season at representative level with the Under 16 Boys team making it to a live semi final and enjoyable carnival had by the Under 14 Girls & Boys, as well as the Under 18 Boys. As a part of the VMCU Junior Carnival, the SDCCL competed successfully, making it to both the Allen & Mitchell Shield Grand Finals, only to be pipped at the post by the City of Moorabbin Cricket Association. With a number of fine performances, Jackson Taylor was named Player of the Nolan Shield. It is worth noting that the SDCCL competed in the bi‐annual Australian Churches Cricket Association Carnival and won going through undefeated. Ben Dix won the Neil Moore trophy as Player of the tournament and SDCCL had 6 representatives in the All‐Australian team. The region experienced steady growth to buck a common trend and with one of the first T20 Blast centres based at East Malvern – Tooronga CC, growth within the region is expected to continue. Further communication and coordination of representative teams between the Pathways squads, Hatch teams and VMCU Carnival teams is progressing steadily and the region is looking forward an exciting representative period ahead with a number of opportunities for junior players to shine. As we move forward, it is exciting to see the City of Stonnington are re‐vamping their recreation strategy to provide a better standard of facilities and the Cities of Yarra and Monash continue to find new ways to encourage the growth of cricket within the region, especially through the establishment of a formalised girl’s competition for the next season.

REGION 13 INNER EAST METRO

PROFILE: The Inner East Cricket Region (Region‐13) encompasses that area of eastern metropolitan Melbourne defined by the Cities of Whitehorse, Boroondara and Manningham municipal boundaries. The Region is effectively administered by an Inner East Region Committee

of Management (IERC). The IERC comprises a Cricket Victoria (CV) Regional Cricket Manager (RCM); a Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union (VMCU) Region Director; representatives of community cricket, notably from each of the two VMCU affiliated Associations based within the Region, Eastern CA (ECA) and Box Hill Reporter DCA (BHRDCA) plus representatives from each of the three Victorian Sub‐District CA (VSDCA) Affiliates, two Premier Cricket Clubs and the Victorian Women’s CA (VWCA). The Region also geographically includes three Clubs with a primary Affiliation to the Ringwood & District CA (RDCA) plus one similarly to Victorian Over‐60 CA (VOSCA). VSDCA Clubs based in the region are Balwyn, Box Hill and Kew with Box Hill CC providing the VWCA presence while the CV Premier Clubs, Camberwell Magpies and Fitzroy‐Doncaster, are aligned primarily for CV pathway purposes. INTRODUCTORY PROGRAMMES: Cricket Australia’s entry level programme, “in2CRICKET”, sponsored by Nestlé through its high profile “Milo” brand, remains the most popular and effective option for Clubs to secure ongoing growth and improve their position within the local cricketing community. Clubs of the Inner‐East Region have traditionally shown strong support for this vital component of our game keeping us among the leaders in delivery of CA’s flagship introductory programme. With 42 registered centres (down only 2 from 2011/12) our region has retained its traditionally high levels of involvement from Clubs. Although there was a slight drop in participant numbers from the previous season (1,523 to 1,368) this should not be of concern given the rise of CV’s new T20 Blast. In 2012/13 the new programme alone attracted 1,500 Inner‐East Region participants, about the same numbers as were registered for in2CRICKET during 2011/12.

REGION 13 REPORT AROUND THE TRAPS: Cricket Victoria Statewide Twenty20 Cup Despite not attracting a sponsor for 2012/13 Cricket Victoria chose to fund the competition. Vermont CC, BHRDCA’s 2012/13 A‐Grade T20 premier won the right to represent region‐13 but was over powered by a strong Merlynston‐Hadfield CC (region‐10) team in round‐1, who themselves went down to South Caulfield CC (region‐12) in round‐3, the Metropolitan Final. Congratulations to South Caulfield CC and region‐12 for ultimately winning the final at Melbourne Cricket Ground against country Victoria’s Upwey/Tecoma CC (region‐8). This is the first time a Metropolitan team has been successful in the tournament’s six year history. VMCU Competitions Neil Wright Shield (U/21 turf) ‐ Again this season both BHRDCA and ECA made it to the semi‐finals in first and third places respectively where both were overpowered. Junior Carnival ‐ Traditionally ECA enters a team in each draw while BHRDCA has concentrated on one team in each age‐group. Jim Beitzel Shield (U/16 turf) ‐ ECA was unfortunate to take home the wooden spoon in 2012/13 following their 9th placed 2011/12 finish. Keith Mackay Shield (U/16 synthetic) ‐ BHRDCA improved on their 2011/12 6th position to narrowly take 4th place on percentage while ECA lost considerable ground over their previous form dropping from 4th to 8th place in a 9‐team draw. BHRDCA subsequently succumbed to 1st placed Fern Tree Gully & District CA in their semi‐final. Russell Allen Shield (U/14 synthetic) ‐ Despite finishing 3rd in 2011/12 BHRDCA were drawn in the lower under‐14 grade for 2012/13 with no team competing for the Russell Allen Shield. ECA’s 1st XI finished in 4th place, 2 higher than their previous effort, which saw them go on to win a quarter‐final against 5th placed Diamond Valley CA (1st XI) and progressed to the semi‐finals where 3rd placed City of Moorabbin CA (1st XI) proved too strong. Des Nolan Cup (U/14 synthetic) ‐ Down from the previous season in Russell Allen Shield, BHRDCA finished on top and ultimately proved too strong for Yarra Valley CA in the semi‐final and Diamond Valley CA (2nd XI) in the grand‐final. After claiming top spot the previous season ECA’s 2nd XI finished 7th and was bundled out in the quarter‐finals by 2nd placed City of Moorabbin CA (2nd XI). Keith Mitchell Shield & Cup (U/12 synthetic) ‐ As in the under‐14s BHRDCA having finished 4th in 2011/12 were nevertheless drawn in the lower under‐12 grade and didn’t have a team competing for the Mitchell Shield. ECA’s 1st XI finished 6th, down from 2nd in 2011/12, then went down to 3rd placed Dandenong District CA in the quarter‐final which saw them contesting the Mitchell Cup. However, after defeating Western Region Junior CA (1st XI) in the semi‐final, ECA found Ringwood & District CA (1st XI) too strong on grand‐final day.

REGION 13 REPORT Josh Browne Plate (U/12 synthetic) ‐ ECA’s 2nd XI finished in second place, an

improvement of one position over their previous season. Unfortunately their semi‐final fortunes were a repeat of 2011/12 except that this time their misfortune was at the hands of North‐West Metropolitan CA. BHRDCA finished their season in 7th place.

Inter‐Association Challenge Cricket Veterans ‐ BHRDCA and region‐14’s Ringwood & District CA continued their annual tradition with RDCA again winning the “Colonel’s Cup” two wins to one. Over‐60 o BHRDCA defeated by RDCA Over‐50 o BHRDCA defeated by RDCA Over‐40 o BHRDCA defeated RDCA Open‐Age ‐ In the 3rd season since adopting a T20 format for their inter‐association programme ECA and BHRDCA were again joined by neighbouring region‐14’s RDCA in this annual 3‐way challenge. Teams were representative of each Association’s first and second synthetic grades with challenge winners for 2012/13 being RDCA and BHRDCA respectively. First Grade (Macgibbon/McIntosh/Trollope Shield Grades): o ECA (Macgibbon) defeated by BHRDCA (McIntosh) o RDCA (Trollope) defeated BHRDCA (McIntosh) o ECA (Macgibbon) defeated by RDCA (Trollope) Second Grade (Burt/Wilson/Wilkins Shield Grades): o ECA (Burt) defeated by BHRDCA (Wilson) o BHRDCA (Wilson) defeated RDCA (Wilkins) o ECA (Burt) defeated by RDCA (Wilkins) Under‐Age ‐ The only under‐age inter‐association challenge cricket conducted during 2012/13 by either of our region’s member associations was between BHRDCA and VCCL’s Mornington Peninsula CA. In what is planned to be the first of an annual event, they played a T20 charity match between under‐25 representative teams well hosted for the BHRDCA by Vermont CC and raising more than $2,200 for “Road Trauma Support Services”. Won by MPCA the game was described as ‘... a well matched encounter, both entertaining and fast paced’.

Volunteers ‐ Most receive no compensation or at best a small honorarium to help off‐set some of the significant personal and monetary costs associated with volunteering. It’s a certainty that neither our game nor the sub‐culture could survive let alone prosper without our volunteers. Those selling drinks and pies from the local Club kiosk, cleaning up after social functions; Club/Association and Pathway Team Managers, Coaches, Trainers and Scorers; Club, Association, Region and Umbrella Administrators; Anonymous helpers in unimagined ways ... are all to be commended. Retirement ‐ For my own part, after an involvement with Cricket that has dominated my life since the age of ten I will not be seeking re‐election as the Region’s VMCU Director in 2013/14. This will effectively end my association with cricket as I intend pursuing other interests that will in any event involve only a limited ‘overlap’ with sport in general. The following formed the committee for the Outer East Metro Region for 2012/2013. General The RDCA Growth and Retention Project (GARP) continue to evolve and this season incorporated a shopping centre road show. A generic flyer was distributed and a significant number of new participants our now playing cricket within the association as a result of this initiative. The region once again held a Junior Leadership Program. The program commenced with a night in mid‐December where junior cricketers from across the region attended the junior leadership information night. This year’s winners were Travis Knightingale from the Yarra Junction C.C. and Jessica Adams from the South Warrandyte C.C. T20 Blast competition unfortunately didn’t go ahead this season. Whilst the low registration numbers were disappointing it was always going to be difficult given the well‐established and successful under 10 & under 11 competitions within the region. A 6 week modified competitions for Girls aged 12 and under was conducted again this year within the region and continues to expand and develop. VMCU Carnival Review 15 teams from the RDCA, FTGDCA and YVCA represented the region in the VMCU carnivals and of these teams 4 played in semi‐finals and 2 in grand finals with the FTGDCA successful in the Jim Beitzel Shield Competition. Pathways Review Unfortunately the Outer East Eagles silverware drought continued but the talent on show caught the eye of the Victorian selectors. REGION 15 SOUTH EAST BAYSIDE METRO

Region 15 has this season looked closely at its purpose and for the planning into the future. The regional committee noted a number of areas that needed attention or guidance from Cricket Victoria. These included guidelines around operations, clarity in regards the role of the committee, reporting to Cricket Victoria and the Game Development committee, Membership and communication from CV to regional committees.

Recommendations were received and are to be implemented to assist each regional

committee.

Representative cricket featured prominently in Region 15 this past season with the

Breakers performing well and both CMCA and the FDCA playing in the Victorian

Metropolitan Cricket Union in its centenary year. CMCA won the Wright Shield in the

Under 21 competition along with the Russell Allen Shield in Under 14 competition and

both the Mitchell Shield and Josh Brown plate at Under 12 level.

South Caulfield also featured prominently by winning the Cricket Victoria Statewide T20

Cup. The victory over Upwey Tecoma by 62 runs was the first for a metropolitan club and

Jordan Clarke was named ‘Man of the match’ in a memorable game.

The FDCA and the CMCA have been in discussions for a possible merge for the coming

season whilst the CMCA, on May29th 2013 formally changed the name to the South East

Cricket Association Incorporated.

REGION 16 OUTER SOUTH METRO

This region covers the City of Greater Dandenong and City of Casey. There are two VMCU affiliates within the region namely the Dandenong District Cricket Association and the Victorian Sunday Cricket Association. The DDCA competition comprises all forms of the game and embraces both Junior and Senior grades.

Matches are played on Turf and Synthetic wickets with the following breakdown: Turf ‐ Five grades with 56 Teams Synthetic ‐ Six grades plus a one day competition with 76 Teams T20 mid week competition with 20 Teams Masters competition with two grades and 16 Teams Juniors Under 11, 13, 15 and 17 divisions. Under 11's are played on Friday nights whilst the rest are played on Saturday mornings with a total of 127 Teams. VSCA play all matches on synthetic wickets and comprises 20 Clubs in six grades with 45 teams. Premier cricket is represented in the region with two clubs namely Dandenong and Casey South Melbourne whilst the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association is represented also with two clubs being Endeavour Hills and Noble Park

Milo in2CRICKET has again increased to 21 Centres across the region, up from 20 in 2011/12. Pathway 2013 continued to rebuild following the evolution of the new boundaries still needed some fine tuning with the selection process being much improved over last season. REGION 16 REPORT VMCU Carnival Results U12 Mitchell Shield ‐ 3rd U14 Russell Allen Shield ‐ 9th U16 Jim Beitzel Shield ‐ 4th The DDCA Under 21 side was again strong in the Neil Wright Shield however suffered a significant loss to the much better CMCA side in the Grand Final played at the Junction Oval. We again had State Representatives with Jack Taylor (Boys U19) and Ryan Quirk (Boys U15) Coach Education and Training continues to be a key component of the region strategy with two level 1 courses being conducted for the season. These were at Hallam in September 2012 with 21 participants (four down on last year) and the Sport Development Program, Springvale in February 2013 with 22 participants (two down on last year) Sports Development Program Dandenong Campus – Based at Warner Reserve in Springvale involved in Schools and Community Programs above as well as direct links made with additional schools and Local Government Authorities. The T20 Blast initiative was run for the first time in Feb‐Mar 2013 at Sweeney Reserve, Narre Warren with 42 registered participants from the region. In addition the T20 Blast Schools Cup had 166 teams entered comprising 94 Boys and 72 Girls. In the Super 8s 63 teams entered across 3 x School Districts across Years 7‐12. 44 Boys teams & 19 Girls. Congratulations go to all the various champions in the region. Dandenong was again in the hunt for finals contention finishing 4th on the ladder and being beaten by Melbourne in the semi final. In the DDCA Buckley Ridges took out the Turf 1 grand final with a convincing win over Mordialloc who finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season. In the VSCA Oasis again held the banner with a win in the grand final over the lions.

REGION 16 REPORT Buckley Ridges continue to prove their strength by winning the region T20 competition however were unable to go all the way to the "G" A note of appreciation and thanks goes to our Regional Cricket Manager in Adrian Jones who continues to provide a tireless and professional campaign of development across all areas of cricket within the region. VICTORIAN TURF CRICKET ASSOCIATION The VTCA this season had over 80 clubs but a slight drop in teams to

236 on turf each weekend over a wide area of metropolitan Melbourne.

Although the VTCA is almost exclusively a senior turf competition, the

majority of clubs field juniors & seniors on hard wickets in local

associations. The association continues to grow in the North and West

but is struggling to grow in the South.

A disappointment this season was the failure to field a team in the Wright under 21

Shield after fielding both a North and South team in recent years. However, without the

support of member Clubs this was not possible.

However, on a positive note the South Caulfield C.C became the 1st metropolitan Club to

win the Statewide Twenty20 Cup which took place on the M C G on the 3rd March.

MATCH COMMITTEE REPORT Wright Shield Under 21 This season being the Centennial year of the union we managed to play the Grand Final of the competition at the Junction Oval being venue for the first match played one hundred years ago. The weather was good to us this year but the level of participation was somewhat diminished over previous years with only ten teams being entered. Some Associations expressed difficulty in putting not only a team together but also in assembling the necessary support personnel such as coaching and team management. Notwithstanding the above the competition was of the usual high standard expected at this level. This season was again a single tier competition with four home and away matches followed by semi finals and the grand final. The grand final at the Junction Oval was played between Dandenong District Cricket Association and City of Moorabbin Cricket Association. CMCA won the toss and batting first set a target 219 that proved to be insurmountable by DDCA. The match was played in excellent spirits and made back to back wins for CMCA. St Kilda was an excellent host, in the provision of the facilities as well as the luncheon, for this centennial event. It was well attended by Cricket Victoria including Geoff Tamblyn and Tony Dodemaide among others along with many life members of the VMCU and a number of special guests.

MATCH COMMITTEE REPORT VCCL Under 21 Challenge Match This season the VMCU played hosts to the VCCL, in this now annual challenge match. Played at the Casey Fields complex on the 10th February it was a competitive match with the VMCU being sent in to bat first making 171 of 47 overs (max 50). The VCCL team in reply were too strong passing the target in 42 overs. The match was competitive and played in good spirits and Cranbourne Cricket Club were excellent hosts with the provision of the facility and luncheon. Both the VMCU and VCCL were well represented by their respective executive and team supporters. Given the demise of the interstate under 21 carnival this annual challenge match provides a great opportunity to measure abilities and standards against what is traditionally a very strong, skill full and well organised opponent.

MATCH COMMITTEE REPORT VMCU Shield Competition

It was another fantastic year of representative cricket that had me feeling very fortunate to have held the position of Chairman, Match Sub‐Committee – Junior this year for a number of reasons. Firstly, that it was the Centenary celebrations of the VMCU. This meant a special focus on the competitions and an endeavour from all participants to rise during this special year. It was great to see the amazing young cricketers, volunteers and officials who made the Carnival what it was. From special individual performances with bat and ball to the successes of team sports to the camaraderie that comes from joining forces with an opposing player to take on the players of another association, the VMCU has been able to provide opportunities for young cricketers to blossom for one hundred years and those who took part in this year’s carnival should remember their special place in history. Secondly, that for the first time in 100 years, the VMCU included a girls carnival in their competition structure. This coincided with the finals day at Macleay Park and was attended by well over 100 players, friends and family. Thanks to the support of Kookaburra and Nathan Pilon, the girls were able to play with pink cricket balls and were amongst the thick of the action with a number of Shield finals going on around them. Special thanks should be given to Di Day (& her band of volunteers) from Cricket Victoria, whose assistance in coordinating the day was invaluable and one of the main reasons it was such an enjoyable success. As the seasons and carnivals progress, we look forward to establishing a strong girl’s competitions at all age levels and the participation, energy and enjoyment the girls bring to representative cricket. And finally, the assistance of those members of the VMCU who offer their time voluntarily to ensure all participants had a wonderful and successful carnival. Without the help of Pat Meehan, Chris Hatzistavrou, Chris Pleitner, Stuart Hamilton, Phillip Arnold and Rodney Patterson, a carnival such as this would not be able to be put on and the efforts they put in during this time are phenomenal. They are the backbone of the smooth running and success of this Carnival and all of their time and effort is very much appreciated. MATCH COMMITTEE REPORT Keith Mitchell Shield – U12 This season 12 sides were split into two graphical divisions of North West and South East. After the home and away rounds, the ladder was then divided into 2 groups. Teams 1 to 4 competed for the Keith Mitchell Shield finals and teams 5 to 8 competed for the Keith Mitchell Cup finals. In the Keith Mitchell Shield top four sides were City of Moorabbin, Southern District & Churches, Dandenong & North West Metropolitan. In the semi finals CMCA 7/154 d NWMCA 5/151cc and SDCCL 9/158cc d DDCA 116. The result of the grand final was City of Moorabbin CA (4/86) def Southern District & Churches CL (85) The Lloyd Champion Award for best player of the carnival was won by Mackenzie Harvey (CMCA) Keith Mitchell Cup ‐ U12 The sides to make the semi finals were Ringwood District, Eastern, Western Region Juniors & Mornington Peninsula. The Cricket fraternity and the VMCU mourned the passing of Life Member Des Nolan in September 2012.

Des was an icon of cricket in the Dandenong area and served the Dandenong District Cricket Association for more than 50 years. His contribution as a cricketer, Executive member, Tribunal panellist, VMCU Delegate, Club President as well as a mentor to Juniors and Under‐21 players may never be equalled. Perhaps above all he was a marvellously loyal friend to so many, unparalleled as the most identifiable volunteer in the region. Des was a gift for the sport to which he dedicated most of his life. He was not only a Life Member of the VMCU (2002) but also of Dandenong District CA, Dandenong CC (2004) and Dandenong Methodists CC. In 2000 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for services to Cricket and in 2007/08 the VMCU struck an Under‐14 team award, the "Des Nolan Cup", in his honour. Regretfully, Des’ wife Denise also passed away some three months after Des. Denise would be seen supporting Des throughout his cricketing life and was a great contributor to the VMCU, the Methodist Cricket Club, the DDCA and the Dandenong Cricket Club. Both will be sadly missed.
