Tennis West is Western Australia’s governing
body for tennis and manages all aspects of the
sport, from elite player development, to
growing participation within the affiliated
club network and community.
Tennis West is headquartered at the State
Tennis Centre on the Burswood Peninsula,
with affiliated bodies located as far north as
Kununurra, south as Albany and as far inland
as Kalgoorlie.
Tennis in Western Australia had its beginnings
in the family homestead environment in both
metropolitan and country areas. With the gold
rushes in the last decade of the nineteenth
century came the growth of tennis clubs. After
two unsuccessful attempts, a tennis association
was established to arrange inter-club
competition and determine the status of
tournaments.
On 17 April 1903, a motion was passed ‘that an
Association be formed to be called the Lawn
Tennis Association of Western Australia
(LTAWA)’. The new LTAWA then confirmed its
decision, on 14 October 1904, to join the
Australasian Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA).
It was in 1912 that the name Western
Australian Lawn Tennis Association (WALTA)
was adopted. In the 1990s, in keeping with a
move by the National body to use the trading
name Tennis Australia, the acronym WALTA was
cast aside for Tennis West.
During the 1980s, the prospect of the
Association having its own offices and tennis
complex always appeared to be just around
the corner. On 20 September 1994, the new
State Tennis Centre was officially launched on
the Burswood Peninsula.
From uncertain beginnings, with the strains of
the war and the division between amateurs
and professionals, the Association has grown
from a few small clubs conducting winter
pennant tennis to administering one of the
state’s major sports.

Heritage
Tennis West
More people playing tennis and reaching their
potential in tennis in Western Australia.
To deliver progressive, professional management
and opportunities for all to enjoy and achieve
success in tennis in Western Australia.
The Tennis West Council consists of members
representing all Affiliated Tennis Clubs in WA.
The number of representatives from a
Metropolitan Club is dependant on the
number of members the Club has during that
financial year.
The Country Clubs are represented by Zone
Delegates. These delegates are appointed by
the individual Tennis Zone committee. The
number of Zone delegates is dependant on the
number of Club members within the Zone. The
Tennis West Council meet on a bi-monthly
basis.
The Tennis West Board of Directors is made up
of 9 members. The Board of Directors are
voted to office by the Council on a 2-year
tenure. Any vacancies arising are appointed by
the existing Board of Directors to a temporary
position until that position comes time for
renewal. The Tennis West Board of Directors
meet on a monthly basis.
The Tennis West Chief Executive Officer is
appointed by the Board to oversee the
operations of the Association and WA’s
Affiliated Club network.

Corporate Profile
It gives me great pleasure to present the
104th Annual Report, including the Audited
Financial Statements for the year ended 30
June 2007.
It is most pleasing to report a successful result
after the preparation of a deficit budget and
the radical changes to Tennis Australia’s
funding to Tennis West for 2006/07, which
created uncertainty in our operations.
These changes and events focused Tennis West
on a more proactive and outcome approach to
our operations, and as such, we were successful
in achieving the targets set for us. At the same
time we were effective in gaining new
sponsorships and continuing our evaluation of
our operations to ensure that costs were kept
to a minimum. Most importantly our service to
members was not to be reduced.
• We welcomed new sponsors Linneys
Jewellers to Women’s State League and the
CBH Group to Country Week and the Country
Zone Challenge
• The ITF Women’s Pro Circuit events at the
State Tennis Centre and Goldfields Tennis
Centre were successful in many areas
• The first Australian Money Tournament was
held at Sorrento Tennis Club during March
and demonstrated a new form of tournament
• The introduction of First Game and
Development tournaments has created a new
generation of young tennis players
• Western Australia competed for the first time
in the Bruce Cup - the interstate teams
competition for primary schools
• The changes in the coaching system
throughout Australia were implemented in
Western Australia
• Old Collegians, Kardinya, Onslow Park,
Dunsborough, Pinjarra & Ravensthorpe Tennis
Clubs joined Tennis West
• Success for players in our player development
program, specifically Brydan Klein winning
the Australian Open Junior Boys
Championship; Casey Dellacqua and Jessica
Moore achieving career high rankings
Key achievements:
Tennis West has focused on governance and
management through this financial year. This
work will continue in the coming months.
The Board of Tennis West has met in accordance
with our Constitution and completed our
responsibilities for the Association. I commend
the Board on their commitment to Tennis West,
the sport of tennis and the governance of the
sport. They bring a broad set of skills to the
Association which is very necessary as the
business of Tennis West expands. I would like to
thank them all for their contribution, and in
particular highlight the support of Vice
Presidents, Michael Lee and Paul Olivier. They
are a very experienced group of people, who
are well aware of the changes and needs for
our sport.
I would like to recognise and thank the staff of
Tennis West, under the guidance of CEO
Andrew Stanbury, for another outstanding year.
It is their enthusiasm and commitment that
enables us to achieve our outcomes. We
constantly achieve so much with minimal
resources and this is possible through our staff.
We also have had minimal staff turnover, which
also assists our effectiveness. Thank you very
much.
The President, Board and Staff of Tennis West
have been pleased to service tennis in Western
Australia. We look forward to ensuring that
Tennis West achieves even greater success in
the coming year.

Tennis West 2006/07 Annual Report 003
President’s Report
The 2006/07 Financial Year was an unique one
and uniquely challenging.
The financial year end was changed from 30
April to 30 June and, as such, the Association
operated with a fourteen month financial year
and budget. It was a tough budgetary
environment, with the well documented
reduction in funding from Tennis Australia
having a considerable impact. With the
support of our Tennis Clubs and sponsors, the
dedication of staff, a focus on cost containment
and the development of commercial revenue
sources, we were able to come through a
difficult period on a sound financial footing
with minimal disruption to operations.
There were many highlights and new initiatives
through the year. They included the advent of
Perth’s National High Performance Academy at
the State Tennis Centre, and the renewal of Pro
Circuit (Challenger) and Australian Money
tournaments in Western Australia, at the State
Tennis Centre, Goldfields and Sorrento Tennis
Clubs. Warnbro’s Brydan Klein won the
Australian Open Junior Championhsips, the
CBH Group and Linneys joined as sponsors of
Country and Women’s tennis respectively,
Tennis League trialed new rules, First Game
tournaments were launched for the very
young, a National Insurance Scheme for tennis
was implemented, Western Australians took out
more National Junior Championships and its
athletes achieved higher standards than most
can remember.
Looking to the future, it is clear that Tennis
West, and Australian tennis as a whole, finds
itself at a challenging but exciting time in its
history. It is a time of dramatic change. Tennis
Australia is leading the process under CEO
Steve Wood, and the changes are profound.
Tennis West aims to work closely with a
revitalized Tennis Australia and is excited at the
prospect of taking on the challenges that have,
for some time, held back the sport. We are keen
to make our contribution by seeking to
maximize the sport’s profile and potential in
Western Australia.
We look forward to another Tennis League
season, the prospects of which are bright with
the recent signing of Hyundai as naming rights
sponsor. With the continued support of the
Department of Sport and Recreation,
Healthway and our other sponsors, we hope to
achieve further success with a talented crop of
junior athletes and continue to develop tennis
in the community with a range of programs
that reaches, amongst others, indigenous
groups, disabled people, teenage girls and the
broader population.
Our mission at Tennis West is to deliver
progressive, professional management and
opportunities for all to enjoy and achieve
success in tennis in Western Australia. If the
provision of opportunities for all to succeed in
tennis in Western Australia is to be realized,
Tennis West must be focused on strengthening
the foundations of the sport. Tennis Clubs, our
members, represent these foundations in our
State. Our strategic plan seeks to reassert this
focus and deliver new and improved services
to Tennis Clubs.
Outcomes are all important. Effective and
progressive management of the Association,
with focused objectives and clear strategies for
achieving them, is vital to grow, develop and
promote the sport on a sustainable basis.
Tennis West is dedicated to securing the
sustainability of its activities through sound
governance, operational, financial and human
resource management, so continuing to
effectively promote the interests of its
members and the sport of tennis in Western
Australia in the long term.

The 2006 Metro Club Conference was held in
August. In its second year, the number of
attendees decreased significantly from the
previous year, with 20 club members attending
the half day seminar compared with 42
attendees in 2005. The inaugural conference’s
format of a full-day seminar proved unviable,
resulting in the change of format to a half-day
conference in 2006. Tennis Australia’s
Community Tennis Manager, Robin O’Neill,
presented on a number of initiatives including
the Support-A-Court program and the Business
Plan CD-Rom.
The Club Connect program continued to
provide metropolitan affiliated clubs with a
direct link to Tennis West staff, thereby building
the club’s relationship with Tennis West and
opening up communication channels. The
program, which was funded by Healthway
through the SunSmart message, provided
metropolitan cubs the opportunity to apply for
a $200 grant to conduct a club event which
focused on increasing membership.
The 2006/07 season saw 17 clubs receive the
$200 SunSmart Club Connect grant. Club
activities conducted included club fun days,
‘Come and Try’ days, ‘Bring a Friend’ day,
member information sessions, sponsors and
corporate events, tournaments for juniors and
seniors, ‘Centenary Doubles’ day,‘Twilight
Tennis’ and many used the funding to assist
with their club ‘Open Day’.
The metropolitan clubs involved were:
Applecross, Belmont Park, Bullcreek, Dalkeith,
East Fremantle, Floreat Park, Fremantle,
Kalamunda, Melville/Palmyra, Mt Lawley,
Nedlands, North Beach, Rockingham, Roleystone,
Scarborough, Sorrento and South Perth.
SunSmart Club Connect Clinics
Metro Club Conference
The State Tennis Centre continued to host the
Sunday morning Intellectual Disability
coaching program, where approximately 20
players participated during the year. Support
for the program was provided from the
Recreation and Sport Network (RSN), through
their Sport and Recreation Coordinator, Aaron
Morse. In conjunction with RSN, Tennis West
developed two new programs, based at Brixton
Street Tennis Centre and Kwinana District
Tennis Club, in an effort to provide more
opportunities across the metropolitan area in a
club environment. Despite initial low numbers
with these programs, the response from the
four participants was very positive and there
are plans to expand the program to the northern
suburbs over the next twelve months. Coaches
Kristy Condon, Alex Finlayson, John Roberts,
Tate Roberts and Andrew Woodward displayed
devotion and passion in the delivery of the
programs.
The Wheelchair tennis coaching program,
followed the Sunday morning Intellectual
Disability sessions, with a steady group of five
members. Support was provided by Wheelchair
Sports WA (WSWA), through General Manager,
Gary Lees. A Wheelchair coaching clinic was
conducted for four participants in Kalgoorlie
during the Women's Pro Circuit event in March
2007, and the program will continue next year
with the aim of encouraging coaches in the
area to become involved in wheelchair tennis
coaching.
Kim Robins, 2006/07 WA Disabled Tennis Player
of the Year, competed in National and
International ITF Wheelchair events during the
past year, and was invited to the Tennis
Australia Open/Junior National Camp in March
2007. Robins’ most significant result for the
year was a silver medal at the Junior World Cup
Wheelchair Team event in Brazil in May 2006.
Robins has been training under the guidance
of WA State Wheelchair Coach, Andrew
Woodward, and he is currently working
towards a National High Performance Academy
Wheelchair scholarship, which is subject to
results in national events. In February 2007,
Woodward accompanied Robins to tournaments
in Brisbane and Sydney, as part of his
professional development, where he was able
to study Robins at an international Open event
and learn from other wheelchair tennis coaches.
Tennis for People with Disabilities Wheelchair Sports WA has moved to the Herb
Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka,
which is where Tennis West will launch a new
program, term 4, 2007, aimed at developing a
new, larger group of participants in between
the basketball, summer and winter, seasons,
which draw the most participants at the centre.
The Disabilities Programs receives support
from the Australian Sports Commission/Tennis
Australia Project Connect, Healthway, the
Department of Sport and Recreation, RSN and
WSWA.
During the 2006/07 year, Tennis West
continued to support the specialised tennis
programs offered to students at a number of
schools in the metropolitan area. The specialist
tennis programs at Kent St, Applecross, Carine
and John Forrest Senior High Schools offer
students the opportunity to focus on tennis as
part of their schooling.
Tennis West provided support to the schools
with Talent Identification Days at Applecross,
Orientation to Coaching courses were offered
to students, whilst Kent St students utilised the
facilities at the State Tennis Centre on a regular
basis.
The 2006/07 Indigenous Tennis Program
continued to be one of the most successful
participation programs that Tennis West
coordinates. The program, with the support
from Tennis Australia, Australian Sports
Commission and Department of Sport and
Recreation, ensured that indigenous children
across the state had the opportunity to learn
the sport of tennis.
The primary schools involved were Mt Lockyer
(Albany), West Northam, Rangeway (Geraldton),
East Kalgoorlie, Nulsen (Esperance), St Marys
(Broome), Djidi Djidi (Bunbury), Dudley Park
(Mandurah), Medina (Kwinana), Balga, Boyare
(Mirrabooka) and Middle Swan.
The program consisted of three parts: in-school
sessions (basic introductory tennis coaching),
club fun days (fun orientated tennis activities)
and the Harmony Day tournament (tennis
competition). Qualified coaches delivered the
in-school program to regional and
metropolitan primary school-aged children
during Term 4, 2006 and Term 1, 2007.
Indigenous Tennis Program
Specialist Tennis High School Programs
Tennis West 2006/07 Annual Report 007
Community Tennis
Kim Robins - WA Disabled Tennis Player of the Year
The regional program was four weeks in length
and the metropolitan program was eight
weeks, with the Harmony Day tournament
completing both programs. The club fun day
was a new inclusion into this years program,
which assisted with providing a link from the
school to their local tennis club and the
opportunity for these children to continue
tennis within the community.
The 2006/07 program involved 12 schools,
compared to seven schools in the previous year,
and saw an increase in participants from 190 to
593 children. There were 11 club fun days held,
which 229 children attended, and five schools
with 68 participants attended the Harmony Day
tournament held at the State Tennis Centre.
The regional program was well promoted
within high schools and through strong
school-club relationships. In 2006/07, three
programs were run, which was short of the
target of five venues.
Programs were run in Moore District at
Toodyay, Central Districts at Northam and in
the Goldfields Zone at the Goldfields Tennis
Centre. A total of 56 females were involved in
the programs, which included initiatives such
as a Mother-Daughter two-day tournament
and Jazz ’n’ Giggle Tennis.
Many metropolitan clubs indicated that it was
difficult to promote the program within high
schools to generate the interest to run a
program at the club. To work in with schools
the clubs offered to run a 5-week program
during school hours.
Balga Senior High School took up the offer
from Nollamara Tennis Club and attracted 25
girls to the program.
SunSmart Teenage Girls Program
The multi-cultural program received positive
feedback from participants and school teachers
involved over the past year. Five venues ran the
program, which included Beaconsfield PS,
Highgate PS, Mirrabooka PS, Parkwood PS, and
Mandurah PS & SHS, for a total of 348
participants.
The Volunteer Involvement Program recognises
Tennis Clubs and Club members who have
contributed to the success of club-based tennis
in Western Australia. Each affiliated Tennis Club
had the opportunity to nominate their club or
someone within their club in the Volunteer
Award categories, who they felt worthy of such
an honour.
This year there were five nominations for both
the Sportrophy Club of the Year and Were
Estate Volunteer of the Year Awards and there
were seven nominations for the Tiger Turf
Service to Tennis Award. The Club of the Year
was awarded to Corinthian Park Tennis Club,
who demonstrated exceptional services,
programs and initiatives in the 2006/07 season.
The Volunteer of the Year was Ray Stokes, of
Blue Gum Park Tennis Club, and John Cartledge,
of the South West Zone, received the Service
to Tennis Award. Both recipients displayed
outstanding commitment, involvement and
dedication to their Tennis Club and/or Zone.
This year saw a very high standard of nominees
in the three award categories and there was a
good cross section of nominations from
metropolitan and country clubs. Unfortunately
there were no nominations for the Young
Volunteer of the Year Award for 2006/07.
For a full list of the winners and finalists in each
Award category, refer to the TToouurrnnaammeenntt RReessuullttss&& AAwwaarrddss section.

SunSmart Multi-Cultural Program
Tennis Australia launched a new grassroots
program in 2007, with all Member Associations
being involved in the delivery. Tennis Hot Shots
is a promotional initiative aimed at 5-12 year
olds, who are potentially or already
participating in tennis coaching or club
activities. In Western Australia, there are
currently 13 coaches who are taking part in the
program, and have collectively signed up 215
participants. Each registered participant
receives a Tennis Hot Shots kids pack along
with exclusive access to a members-only
interactive website allowing access to tennis
downloads, games, competitions, and letters
from Pat Rafter (a former world number 1).
The Support A Court Program is a Tennis
Australia initiative aimed at assisting clubs in
generating funds for their club through court
sponsorship. The 2006/07 program saw five
Tennis West affiliated clubs, plus the State
Tennis Centre, sign up 52 sponsors though the
Support A Court program. Western Australian
tennis clubs ended the year with more
sponsors from the Support-A-Court program
than any other state. The following clubs took
part: Hyden, Lawley Park, Nollamara,
Roleystone, South Perth and the State Tennis
Centre.

Brooke Koenig - SunSmart Development Officer
Tennis Australia established five National High
Performance Academies (NHPA) in 2006 across
Australia, with Perth being selected alongside
Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Tennis West coordinates the NHPA-Perth and
athletes qualify for entry into the NHPA
program based on National criteria. Tennis
West’s State Coach, Milo Bradley, is now the
NHPA-Perth Head Coach and Elissa Burton is
the NHPA-Perth Manager, within her role as
Tennis West’s Development Manager.
Western Australia has had three NHPA full
scholarship holders over the last twelve
months, these were: Brydan Klein, Jessica
Moore and Brittany Sheed. As at 30 June 2007,
both Brydan and Jessica had been selected
into the Australian Institute of Sport Pro Tour
program, which sits above the NHPAs.
Tennis West increased the number of Talent
Development Centres in 2006/07 to seven,
which is an increase from four centres the
previous year.
The Tennis West Talent Development Centres
were:
• Belmont Park
• Blue Gum Park*
• Dalkeith
• Hensman Park*
• Nollamara
• North Beach*
• South Mandurah*
* Denotes new centre in 2006/07
Each Talent Development Centre conducted a
skills program for athletes in age groups 6-9
years and 10-12 years. Each athlete in the
program, depending on their age group,
trained two or three times a week. The Talent
Development Centre coaches attended a
fitness workshop to assist in their professional
development. The workshop involved athlete
warm ups, cool downs, movement and
coordination drills.

The Tennis West 100 Club is into its second
year and exceeded the 100-member mark in
November 2006. Membership runs on a
calendar year and, as at 30 June 2007,
membership is already at 97. The Tennis West
100 Club was established to assist Western
Australia’s high performance athletes with their
tour expenses each year.
Each 100 Club member has donated $100 (or
more) to go directly into junior development in
Western Australia. The donations are placed
into a scholarship fund and are available for
athletes in the Tennis West Academy and
NHPA-Perth program to apply for.

Tennis Legends Breakfast with Fred Stolle
The Tennis West Academy sits directly below
the NHPA-Perth and has approximately 40-50
athletes at any one time in the program. The
Department of Sport & Recreation has
provided strong support for this program over
the last 12 months, enabling the program to
branch out into sport science services. The
program has a physiotherapist available to
athletes once a week for screenings and acute
injury therapy, a nutritionist to provide
individual plans to athletes and a psychologist
toured in the summer with a group of WA
athletes.
The Tennis West Academy consists of a
full-time program with approximately 6-12
athletes who go to school at SIDE (School of
Isolated & Distance Education). The part-time
program has approximately 35-40 athletes who
train for 12 hours every week during school
term at the State Tennis Centre.
Western Australia has the ‘fittest’ state program
in Australia, with all of our athletes exceeding
the physical criteria needed to stay selected in
the program. The Tennis West Academy is
coordinated by Milo Bradley (NHPA-Perth Head
Coach), with the assistance of NHPA - Perth
Coaches, Nicole Sewell and Alistair Todd.

Tennis West’s Camp Courage was proudly
supported by Women in Tennis in 2006/07.
Two camps were conducted at Maida Vale
Tennis Club. Sixty-two 15 & under athletes
were involved and experienced a number of
activities including bush walking, public
transport, physical activities and household
tasks. The camps consisted of approximately
16.5 kilometres of work over 2.5 days and
required athletes to work as a team.
There was a total of 26 participants, 13 girls
and 13 boys, from regional areas, with the
remaining athletes selected from the Tennis
West Academy and NHPA-Perth programs,
comprising of 15 girls and 21 boys.

Milo Bradley - NHPA-Perth Head Coach
Tennis Australia launched their new coaching
courses in July 2006 and Western Australia was
part of this process. In conjunction with the
Australian Sports Commission and Coach
Accreditation scheme, Tennis Australia created
three new qualifications, each focusing on
specialised coaching skills: Junior
Development, Club Professional and High
Performance.
Fourteen coaches from metro and regional
WA attended the 63-hour Junior Development
Course, which consisted of motor skill
development, coaching methods, risk
management, technical and tactical
fundamentals, and planning. The new courses
are competency based and provide a number
of ways for participants to learn and show an
understanding of the skills learnt.
In March 2007, Tennis Australia launched their
Club Professional course in Victoria and
Western Australia. As at 30 June 2007, eleven
coaches were in the process of completing the
116-hour course. Units included are technical
and tactical fundamentals and biomechanics,
periodised and term planning, risk
management, psychological and physical
areas of a players development, and a court
supervisors course. The main presenter of the
course, Dr Machar Reid, is well known for
presenting all levels of ITF courses and has
presented many papers around the world on
tennis strokes and issues.
Tennis West conducted two SunSmart Country
Trainee Coaching Courses for the year. They
were held in Dumbleyung and Southern Cross
and had a total of 17 participants complete the
course.
Four Orientation to Coaching (OTC) courses
were held during 2006/07, with a total of 46
participants. There were three regional courses
held in the following areas: Dowerin, Albany
and Geraldton, and one in metropolitan Perth,
at Applecross Senior High School. Course pre-
senters were Steve Turner (Dowerin), Paul Frick
(Geraldton) and Tennis West’s Participation
Development Officer, Brooke Koenig, who ran
the courses in Albany and at Applecross.
Orientation to Coaching Courses
Coach Education Courses
Tennis West continued to provide professional
development opportunities for coaches in
Western Australia with three seminars held
during the year. Dr Machar Reid presented a
seminar for 26 coaches on the “how to” of
stroke improvement. Tennis Australia’s Director
of Player Development, Craig Tiley, had 34
coaches attend his session on strategies and
tactical play in singles and doubles. Tennis
Australia’s Education and Well-Being Manager,
Craig Morris, had 50 coaches attend a seminar
on the new Tennis Australia Coach
Membership program and “Big Strokes for
Little Folks”, which was the largest attendance
of coaches in WA at a Coach Professional
Development seminar.
Tennis Australia established a National
Coaching Advisory Group and initiated a Coach
Membership program for Australian coaches
in October 2006 to help raise the profile and
professionalism of the entire tennis coaching
industry. Forty-three WA coaches signed up
for the eight-month period for either full
membership or insurance. Tennis Australia
Coach Membership benefits include equipment
offers, access to discounts on First Aid courses
and the Australian Grand Slam Coaches’
Conference, access to Tennis Australia branded
coaching signs and business cards, access to
cutting edge Coach Education resources and
insurance packages, and much more.

In 2006/07 Tennis Australia launched their
national Talent Search program to find the next
Australian tennis champion. The program is
aimed at children aged 6-11 years and is open
to children who currently play tennis and those
that don’t. Over 500 kids were tested across WA
and Talent Search days were held in the
following areas: Albany, Narrogin, Northam,
Margaret River and Toodyay, as well as two at
the State Tennis Centre.
Throughout the Talent Search Day the kids
are tested in ten different activities, including
on-court hitting, agility, speed, strength and
spatial awareness. They are then graded on
their ability to perform in each different area.
Children who have a high score at the end of
the day are highlighted and invited to attend
three Tennis Australia Talent Search follow-up
days.
Tennis Australia Talent Search follow-up days
are free for all the kids who were highlighted
during their Talent Search Day. Tennis West
hosted their first Talent Search follow up in
June 2007, which 56 kids attended. The
children were educated on First Game and
junior tournaments, and provided information
on how to get involved in competition play
and tournaments.

Tennis West country tennis had a decrease in
membership for 2006/07 compared to 2005/06.
Overall membership for regional WA stood at
8,799 (down 436 from last year) with the main
decrease being in juniors (decreased by 290).
There were 135 country clubs affiliated with
Tennis West in 2006/07, which was a reduction
from 139 last year.
The following six country tennis clubs became
dis-affiliated with Tennis West during the past
financial year, with many of them citing
dwindling membership numbers as the main
reason: Ardath, Alexandra Bridge, Broome Hill,
Cascade, Cranbrook and Silver Lake.
Dunsborough Tennis Club became affiliated
with Tennis West with an initial membership
of 13.
The fifteen country zones remained strong
across the state with nine Regional
Development Administrators (RDAs), down
from eleven the previous year, signing on for a
revised role in 2006/07. It was pleasing to see
zones such as South Coast have an RDA for the
first time and also have many of the past RDAs
continue on despite the forecast of major
changes in Tennis Australia’s programs.
Kimberley, South West and Upper Great
Southern Zones failed to register any interest
in the advertised RDA positions.
Two zones that had increased their membership
in 2006/07 was the Mid West, with an
additional 53 members, and the Peel zone,
which experienced an increase of 111
members. This is an exceptional effort by the
Peel committee and tennis clubs in the Peel
Zone, as they have only been an individual
zone for the past three years.

Sixteen Club and Zone personnel, down from eighteen in 2005, from across eleven of the fifteen
Tennis West country zones attended the 2006 Country Conference. Tennis Australia’s Community
Tennis Manager, Robin O’Neill, spoke on initiatives for the coming months and presented on
technical services, player development opportunities for regional athletes and the new tournament
structure. The conference concluded with a meal at a local restaurant, which gave the attendees an
opportunity to network and learn about the latest membership and club ideas from their fellow
participants.
The SunSmart Country Clinics proved to be a successful funding opportunity for country clubs.
Funding was limited to the first 15 clubs who applied and successfully met the criteria. The $200
grant was designed to assist the clubs to hold a tournament or for junior coaching costs, as the
majority of clubs required coaches to travel from long distances to coach their juniors. The 15 clubs
that were successful in receiving the funding were: Dongara, Geraldton, Hyden, Kalannie, Koorda,
Lawley Park, Meckering, Merredin Railways, Mooring Rock, Newdegate, Northam, Quairading,
Tarcoola Park, Toodyay and Wannamal.

Regional Tennis
Tennis West conducted two SunSmart Country
Roadshows during 2006/07. The first Roadshow
saw NHPA-Perth Head Coach, Milo Bradley,
travel with the Tennis West Academy full-time
athletes to the Mid West region in November
2006. Schools and towns that were visited by
the group included Chapman Valley, Geraldton
Grammar, Mullewa, Walkaway and Yuna.
Students and teachers enjoyed exhibition
matches, as well as question and answer
sessions with the athletes.
The second SunSmart Roadshow for the year
was held in Moore Districts by Elissa Burton,
NHPA-Perth Manager, and Brooke Koenig,
Development Officer. Brooke conducted an
Orientation to Coaching course at Wongan Hills
Tennis Club, whilst Elissa coached the local
adults and children over four hours. The fol-
lowing day, the SunSmart Roadshow headed
off to Yerecoin Primary School, and finished up
in Calingiri that afternoon. The primary school
students had a great time out on court honing
their skills and playing fun games. There were
over 300 children and adults who enjoyed the
SunSmart Roadshow over the past 12 months.
Steve Turner, Tennis West’s Country Talent
Scout, continued the SunSmart Country Talent
ID program. Western Australia’s north was
well-serviced with visits to Broome, Carnarvon,
Exmouth and Kununurra, during their dry
season. Clinics were also held in Esperance and
Kalgoorlie. The SunSmart Country Talent ID
program enables athletes in remote areas to
access coaching clinics over a weekend. This
also provides an opportunity to oversee the
development of older athletes that may not
have been recognised in previous programs.
Over 250 children were involved in the
program over the past financial year.

The Regional Tennis Academy Camp was held
from 15-17 June 2007. Athletes from country
areas, who had been identified in state
programs and teams or who had an Australian
Ranking, were invited to attend. The camp
attracted a total of nineteen players, with some
traveling as far as Kalgoorlie and Esperance.
The athletes were immediately put through
their paces when they joined in with the
National High Performance Academy and
Tennis West squads on Friday evening. They
were exposed to an intense training
environment that many would not have
been accustomed to.
Many woke up on Saturday feeling a bit sore
and tender but all were keen for more tennis.
NHPA-Perth coaches, Alistair Todd, Nicole
Sewell and Tate Roberts provided valuable
on-court advice, both technically and tactically.
Athletes were tested physically with the yo-yo
test, which tests their endurance, and the
Hamburger Hill run, which is a 3.2km race. The
camp finished on Sunday with a competitive
match play session.
Reports from the weekend were positive from
players, coaches and parents. Tennis West will
be holding another Regional Academy Camp
in early 2008.

The 2006 Women in Tennis Active Girls Camp
was held from the 14-16 July and was once
again a huge success. The participation camp
saw 56 junior girls from 12 regional zones
attend the camp, with some travelling from as
far as Albany, Broome, Esperance and Moorine
Rock.
The camp was open to country girls between
the ages of 10 and 16 years of age, of all tennis
abilities. The camp participant numbers
levelled out this year, after good increases over
the last few years. This years camp had 56
participants compared to 60 in 2005.
The camp included a variety of activities over
the three days, including many on court hours
of drills, games and competition with the six
female coaches, played at both the University
Tennis Club on the clay courts and the State
Tennis Centre. Other activities included ten pin
bowling and the movies, which provided the all
important social component of this fun
orientated tennis camp.
Women in Tennis, Healthway and the
Department of Sport and Recreation provide
funding towards the camp, which assists by
reducing the camp fees and overall costs of the
program.
Tennis West, with the assistance from
Healthway through the SunSmart message,
offered regional areas and their schools the
SunSmart Country Tennis in Schools Program.
Interest from schools was noticeably down
from the previous year and, of the seven
schools that were involved, 302 primary school
students participated, compared to 937
participants from 11 schools in 2005/06.
Although the number of schools that
participated decreased, most of the schools
involved were categorised as ‘small schools’,
which means they have 70 students or less, and
were located in more remote areas than the
program had previously serviced. Increased
coaching fees and travel expenses impacted on
the number of schools the program was able
to accommodate.

The 2007 CBH Country Week Tennis Carnival
saw the CBH Group come on board as the
event’s new sponsor. The tournament was held
from 17–21 January at Alexander Park Tennis
Club with some matches at Mt Lawley Tennis
Club on two days. Teams events were held on
the first three days, followed by two days of
individual events.
Fifty-two adult teams and 40 junior teams
participated, which was three teams down on
last year. In total about 300 players contested
events during the week.
WIN television took a good deal of footage and
interviewed several players as well as
Tournament Director, Ken Brown. A photographer
from the Farm Weekly also attended, and
results and highlights were featured in country
newspapers, the Farm Weekly and Countryman.
The 2007 CBH Country Zone Challenge was
held at the State Tennis Centre from 11-15
April, with Robertson Park Tennis Centre used
as a secondary venue. With the inclusion of
major sponsor, CBH, at this year's event, it
ensured that this top level country team event
will continue into the future.
Once again the event had fantastic participant
numbers with 45 junior teams (180 participants)
and 11 senior teams (88 participants) travelling
to compete in this prestigious country event.
The 2007 event saw team numbers steady after
a couple of years of dramatic increases, with
one less team in the junior event and an
increase of one team in the senior event.
The junior event was extended by one day,
from two to three days, due to extremely late
finishes in previous years, and was a change
that was well received by many. The senior
event struggled through inclement weather,
resulting in only the necessary matches being
played on day two to get a final result.

Primary and secondary school children took
part in the 2007 Spring Valley Schools Tennis
Classic held in March across eight Tennis West
regional zones. The event saw a slight decrease
in schools/teams this year with 53 schools and
144 teams (864 participants), compared to 56
schools, 166 teams (996 participants) in 2006.
Regional playoffs were held at a number of
venues including Albany, Geraldton, Katanning,
Kulin, Margaret River, Narrogin and Northam,
with many events using smaller surrounding
clubs as support venues. The winning teams for
each region in the Academy Plate (primary
school), Herbert Edwards Cup (boys and girls,
years 8 - 10) and Mursell Shield (boys and girls,
years 8 -12) were invited to compete in Perth at
the State Regional Finals. The Peel and South
Coast Zones did not hold playoffs due to lack of
entries, however sent teams to the finals event.
The Academy Plate finals were held at the State
Tennis Centre, whilst the Herbert Edwards Cup
and Mursell Shield events were played at the
Nollamara Tennis Club. There were 28 teams
(168 participants) that travelled to Perth to
compete in the finals event compared to 34
(204 participants) in 2006.
The support of Spring Valley, in it’s second year
of sponsorship enables entry fees to be kept
low for schools and their students.

The Clough Cup was held at the Geraldton
Tennis Club from 2 - 4 November 2006.
Eighteen teams (72 participants) competed in
the event from the following ten zones: Central
Districts, Goldfields, Great Southern, Lower
Great Southern, Midwest, Moore Districts, Peel,
South Coast, South West, and Upper Great
Southern.
This was the third year of the event and, like
the WIT Foundation Cup for girls, the tournament
changed its format this year. The event
remained a teams event, however this year
included an Australian Ranking singles event
and a round robin doubles event. Both the
singles and doubles of all participants
contributed to the final standing of their team.
2006 was the second year in which Clough has
been the event sponsor. Clough representative,
Robert Farrell, attended the closing ceremony
and trophy presentations. Clough also
sponsored the interstate team that went to
Adelaide in January 2007.
The four boys who travelled to Adelaide in the
State team were: Dion Anthony (Midwest),
Jason Connell and Robert Partington (Lower
Great Southern), and Sam Rundle (Great
Southern). The boys played some fantastic
tennis and finished fourth.

The 2006 Women in Tennis Foundation Cup
preceded the Clough Cup at the Geraldton
Tennis Club, and was held from 30 October - 1
November. The event, in its fifth year, attracted
many junior participants from around the state.
Participant numbers remained the same as in
2005, with sixteen teams (64 participants)
competing from the following ten zones:
Central Districts, Goldfields, Great Southern,
Lower Great Southern, Midwest, Moore
Districts, Peel, South Coast, South West and
Upper Great Southern.
The 2006 event changed its format from the
previous year with the inclusion of an
Australian Ranking (AR) Singles event, as per
the Clough Cup. The tournament remained a
teams event, with participants overall AR singles
and round robin doubles results contributing
to their final team standings. The event
maintained a strong emphasis on team spirit.
Women in Tennis (WIT) has sponsored the
event since its inception, and Trish Ross, WIT
President, attended the event’s opening
ceremony. Women In Tennis also sponsored the
interstate team, which travelled to compete in
the national event in January 2007.
The four girls who travelled to Sydney in the
State team as the WA Women in Tennis
Foundation Cup team were: Grace Bancroft
(South West), Stacey Juras (Upper Great
Southern), Kate O’Brien (Upper Great Southern)
and Alix Smith (Moore Districts). The girls were
very competitive with many close matches,
resulting in the team’s third place finish.
Women in Tennis Foundation Cup - for Girls
The Department of Sport & Recreation
continued their funding of the Regional
Academy for Tennis West in 2006/07. There are
two parts to this program, the first being the
Mid West Regional Academy and the second is
the individual Regional Academy scholarship
holders.
The Mid West Regional Academy completed its
first full year and the athletes have shown great
progress. The six athletes involved in the
program train three times a week, with one
skills session, one match play and a physical
training session.
In January, the Regional Academy athletes
toured to the eastern states and played in the
Margaret Court Cup, Margaret Court
Tournament and the Shepparton Junior tennis
tournament. The athletes on tour were Jennifer
and Sarah Krummenacher, Aiden Anthony and
James McAuliffe.
Over ten athletes from the Mid West region
now hold Australian Rankings, compared to
only one athlete the previous year. Milo
Bradley, NHPA-Perth Head Coach, and Elissa
Burton, NHPA-Perth Manager, travelled to
Geraldton to conduct a mini-Camp Courage for
the Regional Academy athletes over a week-
end. The camp was held from 31 March to 1
April and comprised of a lot of on-court drilling
at high intensity, camping, cooking, sand hill
running, a night walk and beep test.
Mid West Regional Academy
The following athletes were selected for a
Regional Academy individual scholarship for
2006/07.
• Grace Bancroft (Busselton)
• Jason Connell (Takalarup)
• Stacey Juras (Williams)
• Bernadette O’Farrell (Mandurah)
• Robert Partington (Albany)
• Sam Rundle (Katanning)
The athletes travelled to Tasmania for two
Australian Ranking events. All athletes picked
up points, improved their rankings and learnt a
lot from the experience, as some of them were
on their first interstate tour. Benita Bittner,
Tennis West’s Coach Education Coordinator,
travelled with the athletes, and the Department
of Sport and Recreation provided tremendous
support for this program.

The 2006/07 Player Handbook was printed to
embrace both the 2006/07 Summer and 2007
Winter seasons, with the fixtures for each
season printed as a separate entity. The
Handbook contained an abridged version of
By-Law 7, the Rules of Tennis League, with the
complete version required to be posted on the
notice board at all clubs and available on the
Tennis West website.
There were 805 teams, from a record 64 clubs,
that competed over the Summer season, but
the total number was down from 863 teams
the previous Summer. Over the 2007 Winter
season there were 304 teams competing from
55 clubs, which was 16 teams less from the
previous year, but from the same number of
clubs.
The following trial changes were made to
By-Law 7:
• A 3rd set 12-point tie-break set to determine
the winner of the rubber if the sets were tied
at one set all in doubles-only competitions
(Weekend Open, Midweek & Night).
• Points were made consistent across the
board, i.e. 20 points for all competitions with
8 Win Points for the match and 2 Bonus
Points per rubber (exception was Mixed
Doubles competition, wherein the format
necessitated there being 8 Win Points and 3
Bonus Points per rubber).
• In the Junior doubles rubbers, the winner was
the first to 9 games, with a match tie-break if
the score were tied at 8 games all.
The following rules were implemented during
the 2006/07 season:
• For Seniors, the age group was lowered from
a minimum of 40 years to 35, which is in line
with the ITF age groups in this category.
• In the Summer competition, qualification
requirements for all events (except Juniors)
was made consistent across the board, i.e. 5
qualifying matches. In Winter this was
reduced consistently across the board to 3
qualifying matches.
• A Midweek Men’s competition was offered on
Thursdays, but insufficient entries resulted in
this new event not proceeding.
• In Seniors, an O/55 competition was offered,
but again there were insufficient entries.
2006/07 Season Season 2006/07 saw the introduction of on-line
entering of results as an option, which had a
pleasing response from Co-ordinators,
especially in the Midweek competition. It was
strongly recommended that clubs attempt
on-lining entering of results during the 2007
Winter, ahead of mandating on-line entry from
the 2007/08 Summer season.
Promotion and relegation was again applied
for the State League competition, which
resulted in the promotion of City Beach to the
Women’s, and Claremont to the Men’s State
League, after their successes in Division 1 the
previous season.
The teams that finished on the bottom of the
2005/06 State League ladder, resulting in their
relegation, were the Nollamara women and
UWA men. Despite finishing fifth on the final
men’s standings in 2005/06, Reabold failed to
nominate for the upcoming season, which saw
UWA retain their spot in the eight team
competition.
In the Men’s State League, Hensman Park
Tennis Club won their second successive title
after they defeated Dalkeith in the final. In the
qualifying rounds Hensman Park won 11 out of
their 14 matches, and in Round 10 had a closely
contested match against Dalkeith which
resulted in a rare draw, with 3 rubbers, 7 sets,
and 69 games each - this augered well for a
finals show-down.
Despite finishing on top of the League ladder,
Hensman Park in the final were without a win
from the first two rubbers, after Dalkeith
showed their intentions early. After the singles
rubbers however, Hensman Park had fought
back, and the scores were level at 2 rubbers a
piece.
In the doubles, the Hensman Park combination
of Cameron Fenner and Brad Dyer proved to
be too strong for their opponents, as they
powered to a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory, thereby
securing an unbeatable 3 rubbers to 2, 7 sets to
5, lead, and a back-to-back Men’s State League
Championship titles.
With 2006/07 being the inaugural year for City
Beach in the Linneys Women’s State League,
City Beach ensured a finals berth, after
completing the qualifying rounds undefeated.
In the final they played Cottesloe at their home
ground, where an impressive crowd turned out
to support the women in their match winning
victory.
2006/07 State League
With only the doubles to play, City Beach led 3
rubbers to 1, and needed just one more set to
secure the title, which Robyn Lamb and Donna
Blackwell managed to do in a matter of
minutes, as they downed their opponents, 6-0
to give City Beach the coveted title for the first
time in the history of their club.
The Men’s State League Most Valuable Player
and Player of the Year Award went to Hensman
Park’s Cameron Fenner. In the women’s
competition, City Beach stalwart Donna
Blackwell claimed the Most Valuable Player
Award and was named the Linneys Women’s
Player of the Year.
State League bottom of the table teams, UWA
men’s and Dalkeith women’s, will be relegated
in the 2007/08 season. Division 1 winners, Blue
Gum Park men’s and UWA women’s, will be
offered promotion to the State League
competition.

The 2007/08 Tennis League season welcomed
new sponsor Linneys jewellers on board as the
major sponsor of Women’s Tennis League, as
well as naming rights sponsor of the Linneys
Women’s State League Player of the Year.
Linneys provided tennis club members with
the opportunity to treat themselves to a “Taste
of Pearl Indulgence Tour” at their Subiaco
showroom and to adorn themselves in their
stunning collection.
The Linneys tour of their workshop and store
was well received by the tennis community,
who were also treated to a presentation of the
history of pearling in Western Australia, and a
complimentary Devonshire tea and freshly
baked scones.
The Sunday Times continued to provide
support to Tennis West’s premier pennant
competition with the inclusion of a weekly
State League article, published in the sports
section of the newspaper. The relationship was
made successful with the assistance of Curtin
University, through their Department of Media
and Journalism, and the ongoing arrangement
with one of their Journalism students.
Hayley Bolton was the State League Journalist
for the 2006/07 State League season. Hayley
has since moved on to secure a position with
The Sunday Times, proving the mutual benefits
the relationship offers.
Tennis League forums were conducted towards
the end of the summer season, with key
outcomes being:
• Midweek Forum - Dissatisfaction with the
third set and a reversal to the two-set format,
with the potential for a split result effective
from Winter 2007
• Junior Forum - The need to add incentives to
the Junior League competition to encourage
juniors to play on Sunday in lieu of Saturday,
and the recommendation to remove the ITN
points from juniors who play on a Saturday
(exemptions to be recognised).
Overview Tennis West acknowledges Club Co-ordinators
for their commitment to not only their club, but
to Tennis West, and their significant contribution
to the League competition in Western
Australia. The Tennis League Committee is to be
commended on the important role they play
under the leadership of Chairperson, Dean
Williams, and the tireless efforts of Competition
Co-ordinator, Fiona Clark, and Competition
Assistant, Deanne Maloney.
After three years with Tennis West, Fiona
tendered her resignation from the Competition
role in July 2007, to continue her career in
Nursing and dedicate more time to her role as
World President of Women’s Lacrosse. After an
extended holiday overseas it is expected that
Fiona will continue to work for Tennis West on
a casual and volunteer basis, as required.

The number of Tennis West Sanctioned
Tournaments - First Game, Development, High
Performance, Seniors, and Professional -
increased by 25 per cent (forty to fifty) during
the 2005/06 financial year period.
The introduction of the First Game
Tournaments added nine additional events to
the calendar, and Western Australia’s first ever
Australian Money Tournament was held at
Sorrento Tennis Club - the Wangara Suzuki AMT.
As part of the 50 strong events, tournaments
were staged on all the major surfaces - hard,
grass and clay - and were open to junior, adult
and senior participants.
In the last 12 months, the open tournaments
contributed to a combined pool of prize
money in excess of $100,000, made up largely
from the two International tournaments - the
Perth International presented by Ingal EPS and
the Gold Fields - St Ives International presented
by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and the
Australian Money Tournament held at the
Sorrento Tennis Club.
The tournament restructure has been
implemented since 1 January, 2007. The
structure is set in a pathway progression for
players starting from First Game Tournaments,
moving through to Development Tournaments
and Tennis League, and High Performance
Tournaments to the Pro level.
In June 2006, six venues - Belmont Park, Blue
Gum Park, Dalkeith, Nollamara and North Beach
Tennis Clubs, as well as the State Tennis Centre
- hosted a Junior Tournament Information
Session to communicate the restructure. In
excess of 150 children, parents and coaches
attended the six sessions.
The introduction of the First Game
Tournaments have promoted participation
opportunities, allowing players to compete in a
number of matches at a level that suits their
age, development and ability. Red (8 years &
under), Orange (10 years & under) and Green
(12 years & under) events utilise small to full
court size, modified equipment, and low
compression 'easy play' tennis balls to make
the game more accessible to all.

Tournament Restructure
Sanctioned Tournaments The First Game Tournaments commenced with
its inaugural event at the Nedlands Tennis Club
on 6 October 2006, with 63 entries. Since then
there have been eight additional First Game
Tournaments held at various clubs and venues,
with a total of 279 participants.
Clubs that have hosted First Game
Tournaments were:
• Nedlands Tennis Club and Tennis Factory,
sponsored by Surround Sounds
• Hensman Park Tennis Club and Tennis
Challenge
• Dalkeith Tennis Club and MastaStroke Tennis
System
• Lawley Park Tennis Club, sponsored by
TimberCorp
• North Beach Tennis Club and Glen Popovsky

• State Tennis Centre
• Nollamara Tennis Club and Steve Myers’ WA

• Sorrento Tennis Club and Instyle Tennis
Management
Development Tournaments have provided
valuable ‘experience’ in competition for the
player. They have offered 31 tournament
opportunities of higher levels of competitive
play and a more traditional structure servicing
all players, including those who have graduated
from the First Game level. Development
Tournaments have, and continue to provide, a
crucial platform and nurturing ground for
developing both junior and adult players to
compete in the High Performance tournament
level, as well as complementing their regular
play in the Tennis League.
High Performance Tournaments are open
events that attract Australian Ranking (AR) and
Tournament Series (TS) points. These
tournaments promote highly competitive
tennis and are instrumental in developing WA’s
finest tennis playing talent. These tournaments
are a vital stepping stone for junior athletes to
progress into International and Professional
tournaments.
Athletes were able to participate in a number
of Optus Junior Tour and National Open
Tournaments in the past year. There were 17
tournaments, ranging from 12 years & under
club based events to open competition at the
Australian Money Tournament, in which athletes
could improve on their Australian Ranking.
2006/07 High Performance Tournaments
2006/07 Development Tournaments
The Perth Junior ITF was run again with great
success and once more provided many young
athletes with their first ever junior world
ranking points. This tournament forms part
of the International Tennis Federation’s Junior
Circuit of events and is a Grade 5 category.
These tournaments provide an essential
starting point for athletes who plan to go on
to compete in Junior Grand Slams and the
Pro Circuit of International tournaments.
The 125 athletes to take part in the 2006 event,
saw a representation of 33 Western Australians
competing against a strong Interstate and
International field. Rachel Houpapa (WA) took
out the Girls singles title as well as the doubles
title, with long time partner, Janelle
Cuthbertson (WA). Jimmy Rigg from NSW made
it back to back wins, taking out the singles title
in the Boys event, as he did in 2005, while
Stephen Hoh (VIC) and Chris Hopkins (QLD)
claimed the Boys doubles.
The WA Open remains one of the premier
events on the tournament calendar with
another huge playing field. The draws were
very competitive as a number of interstate
athletes competed to win the WA Open.
The tournament forms part of the Tennis
Australia National Open Tournament Calendar
and Optus Junior Tour. This year local player
Troy Hargreaves took out the Men’s title and
Ashlee Brown (NT) triumphed in the Ladies
singles.

First Game Tournament Participants
For the first time since the WA Open was last an ATP Challenger, the State Tennis Centre and the
Goldfields Tennis Club played host to an International Professional tournament. The two Women’s
US$25,000 tournaments saw a number of International athletes head to WA, more than the
national average figures for the Tennis Pro Circuit.
ATHLETES COMPETING IN TENNIS PRO CIRCUIT EVENTS
Perth 40% 44% 16%
Kalgoorlie 44% 42% 14%
National Average 35% 50% 15%
The State Tennis Centre played host to the first International Professional tournament in WA
(excluding Hyundai Hopman Cup) since the WA Open was last an ATP Challenger. With US$25,000
in prize money on offer, players from all over the world came to Perth for a shot at the title. The
quarter final field was comprised of seven different nationalities, yet WA’s own Casey Dellacqua was
strong enough to take out both the singles and doubles titles. Dellacqua combined with Emily
Hewson from New South Wales for the doubles event.
The Goldfields Tennis Club, of Kalgoorlie, hosted the second Women’s US$25,000 International
tournament. There was a host of International talent on show for the region, with 44% of the field
being from overseas. The tournament saw WA local, Jessica Moore, return from an ankle injury
sustained in the Australian Open to qualify, whilst Casey Dellacqua followed up her great form in
Perth to take the Gold Fields - St Ives title and score a local gold nugget for her efforts.
The Spring Valley Schools Tennis Classic was conducted in Term 4, 2006 and Term 1, 2007.
The Term 4 event was hosted at Robertson Park in North Perth and South Perth Tennis Club in
Como, and the all finalists culminated at the State Tennis Centre to fight it out for the Herbert
Edwards Cup (Secondary) and Academy Plate (Primary).
There were 12 teams each in both the Boys and Girls Herbert Edwards Cup. Rossmoyne took out
the boys event and the girls title went to Applecross. The Academy Plate saw seven teams in both
the Boys and Girls battle it out for glory. Booragoon defeated Manning in the boys final, while there
was an all PLC affair in the final of the girls competition.
In Term 1, the Slazenger Cup and Mursell Shield competition was combined with the Herbert
Edwards and Academy Plate competitions. This enabled the competition to be completed in one
term rather than being split between Term 1 & 4.
The competition was altered to run during school hours rather than after hours in an attempt to
boost entries. Some events increased in numbers where others declined. It is hoped that this will
build in the future, allowing the competition to be completed in one or two days, as opposed to
several after school commitments.
The competition was held at the State Tennis Centre and participation on court was as strong as
ever. Applecross dominated the Slazenger Cup event, taking out the boys and girls titles. The
Mursell Shield also showed domination, but this time it was Kent Street winning both the boys and
girls events.
Applecross again proved their tennis depth by taking out the top events in the Herbert Edwards
Cup. Booragoon made it two years in a row with the boys winning, while new comers Bibra Lake
won the girls event.

tournament opportunities available within WA
and included areas such as the tournament
calendar, entry information, some of the rules
and regulations of tennis.
The six supporting venues were:
• State Tennis Centre

The tennis community is becoming more familiar with the Tournament Management Software
(TMS), with many tournaments utilising the software to run their events and to publish their club
tournaments, and even their club championships, on the Internet. The Active online tournament
entry system has enabled tournaments to operate more effectively by taking entry fees directly
online. These two initiatives promoted benefits to the tournament organisers largely by
automatically transferring players directly into the tournament draw, whilst drastically reducing
the paperwork involved with manual entry and payment.
For the first time in the history of the National Bruce Cup, Western Australia entered a team. Past
champions like Ken Rosewell and Margaret Court had previously played in the event, but a
restriction from the WA Department of Education and Training School did not allow WA youngsters
to participate. A change in policy last year allowed tennis to become the first sport in School Sport
WA’s portfolio to send competitors to a National Event in a lone capacity. This was very exciting and
was supported by National School Sport, Tennis Australia, Tennis West and School Sport WA.
Fourteen twelve-year-olds from across WA traveled to Queensland for the event. WA finished fifth
out of eight, which was a promising effort in their first year. The team comprised of girls - Storm
Sanders, Doris Radicevic, Emma Bowen, Cristabel Dowland, Isabella York, Charlotte Cripps and
Georgia Thomas; and boys - Sam Rundle Dylan McCloskey, Robert Allan, Robert Ferritto, Bjarke
Boisen, Steven Francis and Josiah Tyson.
This was the third season of the Tournament Series, which was initially designed to increase
participation in Open level elite tournaments in Western Australia. The series is open to all West
Australian men and women who competed in National Australian Ranking Point tournaments
throughout the 2006/07 summer season.
Players were awarded points from semi finals and above, in eight sanctioned tournaments
conducted during the season. The points from the individual’s best five results were counted to
determine the overall winners.
The Tennis West sanctioned tournaments included in the Points Race were:
Elsco Lighting State Hardcourt Championships
Plexipave Metropolitan Hardcourt Championships
WA Open
Bunbury Hyundai State Grasscourt Championships
Head Grasscourt Championships
Spring Championships
Wangara Suzuki Australian Money Tournament
Humfrey Land Development Geraldton Easter Open
The winner of the Men’s Tournament Series Player of the Year for 2006/07 was Cameron Fenner and
runner up was Richard Sampson. In the Women’s Points Race it was Marisa Gianotti who dominated
the season, with Wendy Kong in second place on the final ladder.

major sponsor Chambers Insurance Brokers.
The event was held in the Grand Ballroom at
the Burswood Entertainment Complex with
renowned news presenter, Dixie Marshall, as
the Master of Ceremonies, and special guest
presenter and tennis legend, Clive Wilderspin.
The 2007 event was the second year with a din-
ner format, which was again well-received.
Attendance was up 8% from last year’s 220 to
239. After the official proceedings of the
evening, guests were treated to a tribute floor
show from ‘Tina Turner’ and ‘Robbie Williams’.
All Tennis League ‘Most Valuable Players’ who
attended the event, were duly recognised and
awarded their trophies on stage.

Technical Services
Tennis West’s Technical Services division was
again active, in 2006-07, in providing technical
advice to the affiliated club network (and
outside it).
This extends from advice arising from basic
club enquiries right through to a full project
advice service on major tennis and multi-sport
infrastructure developments.
Tennis clubs do not undertake the
development of their facilities on a regular
basis, but when they do they more than likely
need specialist advice to navigate the funding
process, deal with contractors, put together
appropriate designs and specifications, source
equipment and deal with other issues as they
arise. Tennis West offers advice in all these areas
and more.
Tennis West’s full project advice service cannot
be, and is not, free to clubs. We need to recover
costs in maintaining this resource, but aim to
deliver the service at rates that are very
affordable. Clubs should note that the service
fee is a legitimate project cost that can be
included in grant funding applications.
This year the Department of Sport and
Recreation’s Community Sport & Recreation
Facilities Fund (CSRFF) supported 14 tennis
facility projects & 8 Government projects in
Tennis with an aggregate value of $1.5 million.
Tennis West was again active in providing
support and / or advice in all of these projects.
Technical Services Manager, Gary Collis, has
provided support to over 280 tennis clubs,
schools, Local Governments and private
entities. He is at hand to answer any queries
in relation to your club’s facility needs.
In 2006-07 Tennis Australia launched the new
National Court Rebate Scheme, designed to
provide financial support to clubs, in the
affiliated network, for facility development.
Already, Tennis West has submitted five
applications to this scheme for rebates on
projects completed in 2007. We are confident
that this scheme will deliver very considerable
value to clubs and contribute to much
enhanced tennis facilities in WA over the
coming years. Tennis Australia has
complemented this initiative with a
reinvigorated Facility Loan Scheme, which
offers very cheap loans to affiliated clubs for
facility development projects.
Tennis West remains available for all those
who need facility development advice or are
looking for tennis equipment at competitive
prices.

The 2007 Australian Open saw the launch of
the new Tennis branding. The new brand
identity is designed to assist in positioning
tennis as an accessible and fun sport for all
Australians. The identity reflects the friendly
nature of the game and its universal appeal.
The new Tennis brand has been adopted
Nation-wide, to create a cohesive and
consistent brand identity system, which
increases and strengthens the visibility of our
sport to all audiences.
Tennis West’s Cross Court E-Newsletter is a
monthly publication, designed to keep the
tennis community and general public up to
date with local tennis news and events.
Subscription to the newsletter is free via the
Tennis.com.au website and numbers continued
to increase over the past year by approximately
15%, to over 2,300 subscribers, compared with
around 2,000 last year.
Tennis West continued it’s relationship with
Curtin University to secure the services of a
student journalist, to report on each round of
State League. The article was then featured in
The Sunday Times newspaper following each
fixture.
The West Australian newspaper included the
State League fixtures each week in their BGC
Sports Diary, inside the back cover, of their
Saturday edition.
Action photos were taken during the State
League finals by a TAFE student studying
photography, which enabled a number of
excellent shots to be sent to local newspapers
and subsequently published alongside the
State League journalist’s article.
State League
Cross Court E-Newsletter
Tennis Branding
There was an increase of more than 20% on
articles published in the State’s major
newspaper, The West Australian, on local tennis
events and players. This significant growth can
be attributed to the success of Western
Australian athletes Brydan Klein, Casey
Dellacqua and Jessica Moore on the
international stage, which also resulted in a
three-fold increase in the number of photos
that ran alongside the articles.
The Sunday Times provided excellent coverage
of State League, as well as a number of articles
on our top touring juniors in Klein, Moore and
Rachel Houpapa.
Local newspapers continued to provide the
bulk of tennis press coverage, with many local
tournaments and events receiving excellent
exposure. There has been an approximate 30%
increase in local press articles compared to last
year’s figures, with nearly half of these
including a photo.
Press Coverage
Metropolitan tennis clubs and coaches
increased advertising in their local newspapers
by more than a third, compared to the previous
year.
Tennis West, in conjunction with Tennis
Australia and the Hyundai Hopman Cup, ran an
advertising campaign on the 93.7fm NOVA
radio station over a two-week period
promoting the new ‘Find a Partner’ program.
Tennis Australia provided the funding for the
radio advertising and Hyundai Hopman Cup
supplied the incentive of a Hyundai Hopman
Cup ticket for the first 200 subscribers to the
‘Find a Partner’ program.

Newspaper.
The first two advertisements focused on
increasing club membership and the final two
advertisements promoted the State League

The Sunday Times also provided space in the

In conjunction with the Participation
Department, a number of Tennis West branded
merchandise were produced, namely lanyards,
pens and wristbands. The items were used as
give-aways at Club fun days and fundraising
events with the aim of promoting the new
Tennis brand, as well as to provide an easy ref-
erence to the Tennis.com.au website.
The Hyundai Hopman Cup once again
provided an opportunity for Tennis West to
showcase our sport to the wider community
and promote the Affiliated Tennis Club
network. The interactive zone at the Burswood
Dome enabled Tennis West to promote the
Mini Tennis program and an opportunity to
raise some funds for Tennis West’s Player
Development program.
The Tennis West interactive zone comprised of
two Mini Tennis courts, which enabled children
to experience tennis and test their skills against
their friend or parent. Each participant received
a Tennis West branded wristband promoting

Tennis West secured nine new sponsors during
the past financial year, valued at more than
$30,000. Significant contributors were the CBH
Group, major sponsor of Country Week and the
Country Zone Challenge, and Linneys, who
sponsored Women’s Tennis League.
Elsco Lighting came on board as sponsor of the
State Hardcourts and State Open Age for a
two-year tenure, and Team Electrical sponsored
the inaugural Perth Junior Open, which ran
alongside the Perth ITF event.
The Perth International Pro Circuit event
attracted Ingal EPS as an associate sponsor, and

Tennis West continues to work closely with our major funding
bodies, in Tennis Australia, Healthway and the Department of Sport
& Recreation, to provide opportunities for all Western Australians to
participate in tennis.
Tennis Australia continued to be Tennis West’s
biggest source of funding and support. Tennis
Australia continue to move forward after the
restructure of the previous year. Financial
assistance has begun to grow again with more
structure and accountability in some areas.
Tennis Australia continued to provide
assistance in the areas of programming and
staff employment, which was crucial to the
continued success of the many programs
conducted throughout Western Australia.
Healthway continued as Tennis West’s major
sponsor, in particular throughout regional
Western Australia, predominantly through the
SunSmart message. The funding provided by
Healthway was sustained in this past year and
continued to provide opportunities for
programs in the metropolitan area. Healthway
plays a major role in our program development
and ongoing increases in the number of clubs
and membership throughout Western
Australia.
Healthway, through the SunSmart message,
also provided Tennis West with an opportunity
to access two groups for a second year, which
had previously not been targeted. Through
Healthway’s Special Incentives Program, Tennis
West conducted programs and increased
memberships in the areas of teenage girls and
multicultural groups. This program has enabled
greater coverage to the sport of tennis and
assisted in bringing communities together.
Tennis West, via the club system, continued to
promote healthy eating, positive exercise
experiences, no smoking and controlled
drinking practices, through Health Policies
and the implementation of these policies at
affiliated clubs. The tennis community’s all
round health, as well as enjoyment for the
game, is important for the whole State. Tennis
West has secured a further three years worth of
funding to provide stability in the regional and
participation program areas.
Healthway
Tennis Australia
The Department of Sport & Recreation (DSR)
has maintained a high level of involvement
with Tennis West, as well as providing
considerable financial assistance through a
number of additional programs. The Sports
Lotteries funding program continued to assist
heavily, both the participation and player
development programs that Tennis West
conduct, in particular in regional Western
Australia, through talent identification and
coach education programs.
The Department of Sport and Recreation have
made a further commitment to Tennis West
over this last year and the following with a
large investment into the High Performance
program. This has allowed Tennis West to
provide further services, sports science
equipment and professional development for
staff. This has eased the constant pressure of
travel and expense for Tennis West and allowed
the program to move to a new level. The
Regional Academy of Sport program also
gained increased funding and this program
continues to provide opportunities for regional
athletes in their development. It is hoped the
continued success of the high performance
program will provide DSR with evidence that
it’s investment has been used wisely and
helped Western Australians to reach their
potential.

The 2006/07 tennis season has yet again been
a busy and very enjoyable one for the Women
In Tennis (WIT) Committee.
On Friday 8th September, Women In Tennis
held their first Spring Fashion Parade at the
Cottesloe Tennis Club, since the inaugural one
in 1988. The event raised more than $2,700, and
was attended by an appreciative audience of
more than 180. Guests enjoyed champagne
and a scrumptious morning tea whilst the
latest sports, casual and evening fashions were
paraded.
The next WIT event of the calendar was Gala
Day, which was held on Wednesday 18th
October and was held at five venues: Alexander
Park, Blue Gum Park, Claremont, Nedlands, and
Reabold Tennis Clubs. It was a great success
with approximately 70 ladies attending each
venue. Our very generous sponsors were once
again Were Wines.
It was a very sad day in September 2006, when
Helen Waters passed on. She was the founding
President of the Women’s Auxiliary (now
known as Women In Tennis), a great sporting
identity and a tireless activist for women’s tennis.
On the 27th October, my husband and I were
guests at the State League Launch at the State
Tennis Centre. We watched some remarkable
ladies tennis with a great game between
reigning State League Champions, Nedlands,
against last year’s Division 1 winners, City Beach,
which saw City Beach win 5 rubbers to 1.
The WIT Foundation Cup was held again in
Geraldton from 30th October to 1st November,
and my husband and I drove up to attend the
opening ceremony. The event, in it’s 5th year,
attracted many junior girls from around the
State, with sixteen teams competing in the
event from the following ten zones: Central
Districts, Goldfields, Great Southern, Lower
Great Southern, Midwest, Moore Districts, Peel,
South Coast, South West and Upper Great
Southern.
The victorious Upper Great Southern team
comprised of Kate O’Brien of Pingelly, Stacey
Juras of Williams, Courtney Fulwood of
Brookton, and Jessica Hughes of Boddington.
Juras, the tournaments number two seed, was a
finalist in the singles event, which she lost in a
tough three setter to the top seed, South West’s
Grace Bancroft, 6-4, 5-7, 6-7.
The 2006 WA WIT Foundation Cup team
travelled to Sydney in January 2007. The team
comprised of Grace Bancroft (South West),
Stacey Juras (Upper Great Southern), Kate
O’Brien (Upper Great Southern) and Alix Smith
(Moore Districts). The girls all did extremely
well and participated with great enthusiasm.
They enjoyed seeing many world-class players
including Kim Clijsters, Sam Stosur and James
Blake. They also had many enjoyable days
sightseeing and displayed a very high level of
sportsmanship.
The WIT annual Hopman Cup breakfast was
held at the Burswood Entertainment Complex
and this year was held, for the first time, in
conjunction with Tennis West. The Tennis
Legends Breakfast was an outstanding success
with over 270 guests attending. Fred Stolle, an
Australian Tennis Legend, was the guest speaker
and Mark Readings, TV sports presenter, was
the Master of Ceremonies. The event raised
over $6,500 for Women In Tennis initiatives and
Tennis West’s player development program.
From 11 - 18 March 2007, Sorrento Tennis Club
hosted an Australian Money Tournament. The
event attracted many of WA’s leading female
players including Casey Dellacqua and 16 year
old rising star, Jessica Moore, as well as players
from ‘The East’ (of Australia) and from Asia. A
Lifestyle Fashion Show was held on the Friday
(9th March) and a luncheon was included,
which several of the WIT Committee attended
and helped with behind the scenes.
In March 2007, I was invited to the opening of
the Clontarf Aboriginal College Role Models
WA Sporting Academy. The Academy provides
young girls with a workplace readiness and
traineeship program, as well as promoting
healthy lifestyles and encouraging important
life skills through participation in sports.
Clontarf Aboriginal College and Academy staff
provides pivotal roles in supporting these
objectives.
On 2nd May, we ran our 7th Annual WIT
Doubles Tournament, which was held at the Mt
Lawley Tennis Club. We had a record attendance
of approximately 84 pairs and, even though
rain drizzled slightly throughout the day, a great
day was enjoyed by everyone. Our sponsors
were once again very generous and thanks
must go to Were Wines, Doris Brinkhouse of
Claremont and Elle Boutique of Nedlands. The
winner of the Linneys Indulgence Tours raffle
was drawn on the day. We are very grateful for
the ongoing support from these sponsors at all
our events throughout the year. Andrew and
Fiona, from Tennis West, also gave great
support on the day and this was greatly
appreciated by our committee.
In July,Women In Tennis again provided financial
support to the Active Girls Live-In Camp, which
approximately 50 - 60 girls participated. The
event is aimed at providing girls, aged between
10 and 16 years, from regional WA, the
opportunity to experience tennis in a fun and
social environment.
Another exciting program, supported by
Women In Tennis, was Camp Courage for girls.
The program was held in August, and the girls
selected for this camp were identified as having
the talent and potential to represent our state
at national level. Camp Courage is a ‘boot
camp’ style program, which aims to prepare
these young players with the physical and
emotional qualities to endure the rigours of
the tennis circuit.
During 2006/07, Women In Tennis have
donated funds throughout the year to help
young girls in their tennis coaching; these clubs
include Dowerin, Cadoux and Beverley Lawn
Tennis Clubs.
The 2007 Tennis Industry Awards Night was
held on Friday 27th April and was well
attended. Guests attending received a 3-course
meal, unlimited drinks, a tribute floor show and
Dixie Marshall as MC. My husband and I
attended, representing the WIT Committee, and
enjoyed the evening immensely. It was
wonderful to see Kim Waters given an award
for years of contribution to the Women in
Tennis Committee.
I would now personally like to thank the
Women In Tennis Committee. You have worked
cheerfully and diligently throughout the year
doing what you do best. It has been a pleasure
and an honour to work with such giving,
wonderful ladies.
In closing I would also like to thank all the staff
at Tennis West who have given our committee
so much support this year and, in particular, I
would like to give special thanks to Fiona Clark,
Competitions Co-ordinator, who has given our
committee tremendous support throughout
the past three years. It has been an absolute
pleasure to have been associated with such a
diligent, enthusiastic, capable and warm
person. We all wish her the very best in her
new venture. I would like to give the outgoing
committee members my sincere thanks and
hope the new members find joining the
committee as rewarding as I have done.

Tennis Officials Australia - WA Division
The 2006/07 season has been quite
challenging for the WA Division of Tennis
Officials Australia.
The WA Division has found it difficult to retain
our experienced base of umpires due to an
increasing number who are working full-time
(and consequently have needed to retire from
the Division), and it has been hard to recruit
new members (with just four this year).
Demographically, umpiring is an occupation
mostly served by students and the older
(semi-retired) age groups, who have more time
available for working events. We often find
ourselves in a “no-win” situation with the
timing of finals days, which are usually on
weekends when members who play pennants
are committed to their teams and uni students
work at part-time jobs, and on weekdays the
full-time workers cannot afford to take a day
off to attend. Therefore, it is always a struggle
to ensure sufficient umpires are available to
service these events as they arise and,
unfortunately, sometimes it is just not possible.
During the past season, much to our regret,
there were a couple of events we were unable
to service and we look forward to working with
Tennis West to try to find a solution to these
problems. Hopefully we will be able to advertise
through the Tennis West club database and
attract new recruits during the next couple of
months.
Having said all that, it was still quite a busy
season with a couple of events starting us off
during September/October, Men’s State League
every Saturday for our Referees and, of course,
the usual very busy December including the
ITF 18s, Perth Junior Open (16s) and the WA
Open. All these events increase our umpiring
expertise in preparation for the Hyundai
Hopman Cup - the premier tennis event in
Western Australia, show-casing Perth to the
world.
Cathy Smith was again appointed Chief of
Umpires for the 2007 Hyundai Hopman Cup
and our Division was able to fully service the
event with the help of four interstate umpires.
Seventeen Western Australian umpires were
selected for the 2007 Australian Open, with
several making it through to the final day,
which was a great achievement. There were
several more tournaments in the second half of
the season, including the Men’s State League
Final, finishing off with the Slazenger State
Schoolchildren’s Championships in April.
In March we officiated at three new
tournaments - Australian Money Tournament in
Sorrento, and two ITF Women’s Pro-Circuits, one
in Perth and the other in Kalgoorlie. Two of our
chair umpires, Matt Hayes and Jeromy Jones,
were also designates at these Pro-Circuit
events, working alongside International chair
umpires. Securing these events is a very
exciting development for tennis in this State,
and hopefully Tennis West will be able to retain
these high-quality events for many years to
come.
Our umpires continue to be instructed and
assessed by Cathy Smith in her role as WA
Evaluator, and Cathy ensures that all our
umpires continue to officiate at the required
high standard. Her training has contributed to
the selection of WA umpires for some National
and International events this year: Patsy
Harmer and Sue Tribe at ATP Challengers in
Caloundra and Kawana Waters (November);
Matt Hayes (Chair) at ITF Challenger in
Nuriootpa (November); Paul Crowther at
Medibank International in Sydney (January);
Patsy Harmer and Sue Tribe at Moorilla
International in Hobart (January); Patsy Harmer
and Sue Tribe at ATP Challenger in Burnie
(February); Sue Tribe at Group II Davis Cup in
Samoa (April); and Sue Tribe at Wimbledon
Qualifying in UK (June).
In closing, I would like to thank Andrea
Mitchell, Andrew Stanbury and all the Tennis
West staff for their continued support of
TOAWA. We look forward to working closely
together in the future to ensure the increasing
success of tennis in WA.

Tennis Seniors Western Australia had another
very busy year with the highlight being the
hosting of the Australian Championships in
Perth, in January 2007.
Tennis Seniors WA headquarters at Robertson
Park were fully utilized, along with facilities at
Alexander Park and Mt Lawley tennis clubs.
The Team’s event and the Individual Australian
Championships attracted over six hundred
players from around Australia and overseas.
The Team’s event saw 280 Western Australian
players formed into 28 teams. We came up
victors in 10 events, 5 men and 5 ladies teams.
The second week saw some great tennis with
many Australians and World Champions doing
battle. WA came up with eleven winners and
eight runners up. Four Western Australian
members in Roger Grant, Margaret Robinson,
Helen Muir and Elsie Crowe were selected to
represent Australia in Turkey and New Zealand.
Our grass courts at all three venues were in
superb condition, and Perth is the envy of the
rest of Australia. Thank you to the committee
and members of Tennis Seniors WA, Alexander
Park and Mt Lawley tennis clubs for their hard
work in assuring a successful championship
event.
During the remainder of the year, we have
organised competitions on Saturday
afternoons, Wednesday Ladies in winter and
Tuesday nights. Other day events include the
HEAD Teams Events Day, Peter Waters Memorial
Day sponsored by We’re Estate Margaret River,
Ebano R & R Tournament sponsored by Max
Heitman and the D’orsogna Telethon Tennis
Day. These events were all run with the usual
friendly and efficient manner that Tennis
Seniors WA are famous for.
A Tri-city challenge was introduced during
2006 between the City, Mandurah and Bunbury
teams, with Mandurah being the host this year.
A good day of tennis was enjoyed by twelve
men and twelve ladies from each area. The City
team finished as the inaugural winner.
Bunbury will host the 2007 event.
The Tennis Seniors Award for 2007 was award-
ed to Pam Woodward, a worthy recipient. Pam
and her sub committee have been running the
Wednesday Ladies winter competition at
Robertson Park for the past seven years. This
year saw ten teams do battle during the winter
months, with finals held in July. A sincere thank
you to Pam and her sub committee for a very
efficient and friendly organised competition.
I would also like to encourage all 35+ players to
join Tennis Seniors. We provide the opportunity
for you to play with players of your own age
group and standard, with tennis provided for
social players every Friday evening or Sunday
afternoon. Elite players have the opportunity
to participate in the State Titles in October,
Australian Championships held in Wodonga,
Victoria in 2008 and to nominate for selection
in World Championships to be held in Turkey
2008.
Tennis Seniors WA and Perth has been selected
to host the World Championships for the 60
plus age groups, to be held in November 2009.
Another chance to see the best in the world.

State Tennis Centre
Building the business of the State Tennis
Centre remains a challenge, but good progress
is being made.
Initiatives have been taken to increase the
tennis court utilisation, from the new
Tennis-to-the-Max programs to the hosting of a
Pro Circuit event. The Centre is home to Perth’s
new National High Performance Academy, the
functions business is extremely healthy and
new commercial opportunities have been
grasped, including event parking and an
outdoor functions business.
“Tennis-to-the-MAX” was introduced in 2006
and encompasses all of the State Tennis Centre
(STC) on-court programs. The first of those
programs, Tennis Workout, was initiated in
September 2006. This program is an hour-long
circuit-style session with fun tennis drills,
designed to give participants a complete
physical workout in a tennis environment with
a professional coach. Tennis Workout has
proved to be a success with a regular group of
8-10 people attending each week, and
numbers rising to 20 or more during the
warmer months. Following positive feedback,
the second Tennis-to-the-MAX program, Adult
Group Coaching, was introduced in May 2007,
as a next step for those wanting to work on
more technical aspects of the game. The
six-week pilot program was well received and
will continue to be offered in the future.
We continue to face the challenge of increasing
the court usage at the centre. However, with
the current Tennis-to-the-MAX programs in
place, the Player Development program
utilising most of the courts in the evenings, and
Trinity College signing a long term agreement
to use the STC as a training and playing venue
for their school competition, we believe we are
on the right track.
The State Tennis Centre function business
continues to grow and this year saw an 8%
increase in profit. There were a number of new
clients who booked the venue during the year.
The STC website has been an important
advertising tool for the function venue, as
many enquires are received through this
medium. The STC is also listed with a function
venues website (Function Rooms Perth), as well
as the Weddings WA website, broadening the
promotion of the venue for very little cost.
The decision was made early in 2007 to start
hiring out the undercover show court as an
additional function venue at the Centre. It has
been named “The Marquee” and there has
been some interest in this venue, particularly
from catering companies, as it offers something
new and different to the outdoor function
venue scene in Perth. At the time of this report
there have been three bookings for “The
Marquee”, and it is anticipated that there will be
more during the summer months.
Thank you once again to the Burswood Park
Board who continue, among other things, to
maintain the State Tennis Centre grounds. It is
extremely important to our business that a
good first impression is made to all who attend
the venue and the Burswood Park Board make
this possible.

I have pleasure in presenting the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and
supporting financial information for the Western Australian Tennis
Association Inc. for the period of 11 MMaayy 22000066 ttoo 3300 JJuunnee 22000077.
This year the Association traded a 14-month
period due to the Council approving a change
of financial period reporting from the previous
May - April period to a traditional July - June
reporting period. In order to make this change
it was necessary for the Association to trade for
14 months this financial year.
This financial period proved to be more
favourable than initially budgeted. It was with
the diligence and hard work of the Tennis West
staff that the final results came in approx. $40K
better than first budgeted. The final result was
still a net loss of $46.6K for the year, however
this is 46% better than expected.
As the year unfolded we were able to realise
more income from grant funding than initially
advised from Tennis Australia in regards to
Player Development and Participation programs.
The commercial areas of the Association also
performed very well and assisted greatly in the
reduction of budgeted losses for the year.
During January and February 2007 it was
necessary to expend approx. $43K on court
re-surfacing work at the State Tennis Centre in
order to ensure the courts were up to the
required standard for local and national events.
This expense was initially going to be a direct
cost against the budget for the year. During the
latter part of the financial year Tennis Australia
launched the National Court Rebate Scheme
and this enabled the Association to recover
50% of these costs, which has also been
reflected in this year’s results.
Once again Healthway and the Department of
Sport & Recreation were key supporters of the
Association during the year. There was an
increase in funding from the Department of
Sport & Recreation. In particular, the Tennis
West Player Development area received a grant
of $42K for High Performance programs. The
Healthway program this year was the second of
a 2-year funding agreement. New funding
arrangements have been finalised to continue
this vital program.
Tennis Australia has also been a major
contributor and supporter of the Association
during the last 14-months. It was unfortunate
that 2 years ago Tennis Australia ceased the
untied Distributions program to the State
Member Associations. This caused us to look
even more closely at all of our programs and
work to a strict but realistic budget. As Tennis
Australia was still in the process of finalising
their programs from the national perspective
Tennis West had to budget and operate within
the restricted boundaries it knew at the time.
As the year unfolded Tennis Australia made
more funding available to the Association in
tied and performance based programs. Across
many areas, Tennis West staff exceeded key
performance indicators set by Tennis Australia
and this contributed greatly to the performance
outcomes of the financial year.
The State Tennis Centre traded successfully
during the year and produced a surplus for the
first time. This surplus is due mainly to the
success of the commercial arm of the Centre as
well as the opportunity found in generating
income through parking fees during the
neighbouring Burswood Entertainment
Complex’s busy periods. This opportunity alone
generated $12.5K in income for the Centre.
Even though we have produced good results
when compared to budget, the Association still
had to draw down on its General Reserves in
order to fund the net loss produced this year.
Fortunately it is anticipated that this is an
irregular occurrence as we have been able to
forecast a surplus budget for the coming
financial year, which will allow us to continue
increasing these General Reserves for the
Association’s future.
I would like to formally recognise the hard
work of the staff of Tennis West in producing
these results and the basis for surplus budgets
in the future. With the direction of Andrew
Stanbury, the Chief Executive Officer, I am
confident that the next 12 months will produce
another solid year from a financial perspective.
