Annual Fund CampaignMonies raised by the Annual Fund Campaign support our very mission by ensuringthat EFS continues to provide a full spectrum of exceptional programs for ourstudents, keep tuition as affordable as possible, retain top-notch faculty and staff, andremain the first-choice school for hundreds of families who want the best education fortheir children.

AEIOU CampaignBeginning in 2001 with the first pledge to the AEIOU campaign, funds raised havemade an enormous and valuable impact on the school’s learning environment byrenovating much of the building (including the state-of-the-art Johnston Theatre),increasing the scholarship endowment, and establishing a teacher salary endowment.

Dining Room CampaignCompleted in early 2008, the Dining Room Campaign increased square footage andthe occupancy rate and improved the look and feel of the space, creating a moreenjoyable dining experience for students and for special functions and other activities.

AuctionThe school’s primary fundraising event, the Auction generates almost $200,000annually during an evening of silent and live auctions with dinner and drinks in anunforgettable theme-based atmosphere.

4 2007/2008 ANNUAL REPORT

AS I LOOK BACK ON THE PAST YEARI find there are many highlights to report: newcurriculum was developed; games were won;academic and life lessons were taught and, more importantly, learned; lifelong friendshipswere formed; musical and theater performanceswere cheered by family and friends; andstudents demonstrated their caring hearts byhelping each other, their families, and theirteachers without being asked or expectingthanks. Of course, this is what we’ve come toexpect at Elmwood Franklin School. We havealso come to expect commitment to the schoolthrough the financial support of many people:parents, alumni, Board members, alumniparents, grandparents, and other friends of theschool. Thank you to all of you who make itpossible for Elmwood Franklin School tocontinue its tradition of excellence. I’despecially like to thank our current parents, ofwhom 91 percent participated in the 2007-2008 Annual Fund, a record in recent history.

ELMWOOD FRANKLIN SCHOOL 5

Among the projects tackled over the pastyear, the reaccreditation self-study was by farthe biggest. Every ten years, ElmwoodFranklin is asked to examine all aspects of theprogram and produce a 100+ pagedocument which is reviewed by the New YorkAssociation of Independent Schools, and it isfollowed up with a three-day visit to schoolby a team of 10 educators. Our visiting teamwill be at EFS in October.

During the last school year we looked ateach academic discipline and all policies andprocedures and included voices of teachers, students, alumni, and parents. The first thingwe were charged with doing was examining, rewriting, if necessary, and affirming theschool’s mission. The mission is at the centerof everything we do at Elmwood Franklin.Although mission statements are sometimesviewed as static and pie-in-the-sky, we don’tsee ours that way. The EFS mission is a livingdocument; it captures what we do, who weare, our history and our future. The trick isto do this in a few words and to make itaccessible to all. As we started to look intothe mission, we realized that it hadn’t beenupdated in about 15 years. Further, mostagreed that it was too wordy and abstract, especially for our students to fullyunderstand and embrace. After many hoursof writing, reviewing, editing, and moreediting, a group made up of faculty,

administrators, Board members, and parentsmade a formal proposal to the Board for therevised mission statement and a newstatement of commitment that elucidateshow we propose to carry out the mission.Elmwood Franklin School prepares studentsfor success in life is how it begins. Pleasetake a few minutes to read the full mission onthe first page of this Annual Report. I hopeyou agree that it captures the historical andcontinued commitment to academicexcellence, character development, and thesupport necessary for each student toachieve to the best of her/his ability, andthat it strikes the right balance of traditionand innovation that is at the heart of whatmakes EFS special.

As we enter the next 10-year chapter of theElmwood Franklin School story, I thank youagain for all that you have done to supportthe work of our faculty and the success ofour students. It is only because of thesupport of many people over many yearsthat EFS is able to deliver on its mission.

Thank you.

Every gift matters.Elmwood Franklin’s exceptional learningenvironment comes, as we all know, at a cost.We would not be able to provide theeducational experience we do without thecharitable support of our constituents—tuition rates would simply be too high.Instead, to meet the costs of running theschool every year, we depend on the financial

support of our alumni, current parents andparents of alumni, grandparents of currentand former students, current and formerfaculty and staff, and other friends of theschool. When combined, these gifts bridgethe gap between tuition and operatingexpenses—a difference of more than$3,000 per student!

Is there a more involved, more enthusiastic, more caring group than ourparents? Probably not—and the many contributions of the EFS ParentCouncil show it. From picnics to book fairs, teacher treats to speakerseries, room reps to family fun, the Parent Council serves as a supportgroup to the school and as a resource for all members of the schoolcommunity. All parents or guardians of students attending the school aremembers and are encouraged to participate.

We sincerely appreciate our parents’ involvement and support.

At Elmwood Franklin, we think our graduates are too special to just let goand never hear from again. And our former students agree—thefoundations that they build at EFS often have lasting meaning throughouttheir lives.

The Alumni Council works to maintain a relationship of mutual benefitbetween the school and its alumni. Its objectives are to maintaincommunication with alumni, keep them informed and involved in theschool, solicit their social and financial support, and to share their newsand accomplishments with the EFS community.

We appreciate the efforts of these dedicated alumni on behalf of our school.

Russell A. Anderson

Russell A. Anderson became headmaster of Elmwood Franklin Schoolin 1956 and was commended throughout his 23 years of service tothe school for his outstanding leadership and personal involvement inall aspects of the school. Elmwood Franklin owes much to Mr.Anderson, who will be remembered for the legacy of his tenure—arefurbished facility, a refined and well-rounded curriculum, stableenrollment and a healthy financial state—that continues to shape ourschool today.

We invited the EFS community to contribute to a memorial book thatshares memories and tributes from those who worked, studied, orvolunteered with Mr. Anderson at Elmwood Franklin. This book wasgiven to his family during a tribute service held in the JohnstonTheatre in June. We are pleased to share some of those memories onthe following pages.

ADVANCING EXCELLENCE IN OUR UNIVERSE

The AEIOU Campaign, chaired by Alice Jacobs and Robin Sadler, was launched with a three-pronged objective: to raise the substantial funds necessary for ensuring the future of endowedscholarship opportunities, competitive teacher compensation, and extensive capital improvements.

S C H O L A R S H I P E N D O W M E N TThe Scholarship Endowment Fund generates additional revenue each year for our tuitionassistance program, provides new scholarships to deserving students, and establishespartnerships with other grant-making institutions to help subsidize tuition costs.

T E A C H E R S A L A RY E N D O W M E N TElmwood Franklin recognizes the necessity of recruiting and retaining strong, dedicated facultymembers—and competitive compensation is an important part of achieving this goal. TheTeacher Salary Endowment Fund allows Elmwood Franklin to preserve and enhance one of itsmost valuable assets.

B U I L D I N G F U N DIn keeping with initiatives outlined in the campaign’s strategic plan, we have made extraordinarystrides toward creating an environment where students and faculty can excel together.

Completed renovations include the construction of:• an integrated performing arts center, featuring the state-of-the-art Johnston Theatre and

new music rooms;• a well-resourced art studio;• an expanded Upper School science center;• an enhanced Upper School mathematics suite; • renovated foreign language rooms.

With the many achievements of this timely campaign, Elmwood Franklin School now standsready to confront the challenges of the 21st century.
