Introduction

After an extraordinarily difficult year in 2009, in which we had to take a step back as a company, we saw recovery in 2010. The operating results were slightly higher than expected. Returns have improved and we closed the year with a positive result.

De baak has made great strides towards improving quality. A significant percentage of the new building plans on the De Horst Estate have been completed. The new office and training building, blauwGedicht, is already being fully utilized. The new accommodations in Ebb & Flood are nearing completion and a nice round dent in the ground marks the spot where the new Maitland theater will be built.

We have also laid a firm foundation in digital efficiency initiatives. This is helping us to fulfill our ambitions in modern approaches to work, sustainability, and a more streamlined organization. In addition, 2010 saw a focus on defining our strategy for the coming years. building on the advances we achieved in understanding training needs and market developments, we translated this knowledge into innovations.

In 2011, we stand ready to embrace the challenge of blazing a trail towards continued growth, relying on a sophisticated strategy that focuses on leadership and entrepreneurship.

We are ambitious. De baak aims to help facilitate the recovery of the Dutch economy and Dutch society at large. Leadership and entrepreneurship are crucial in this context.

This ambition demands innovations and improvements in countless areas, from how we structure our organization to how we shape and define learning and development.

Where 2009 saw turbulent times for us, 2010 has in many ways been a year of transformation. De baak concluded its activities for the year as a stronger and more innovative organization.

Together - as always - we stand strong to face a challenging task. The previous year made us confident that we will be able to fulfill our ambitions, step by step and year after year. In this process, we rely on the dedication and commitment of all those involved, and there are many.

Master Craftsman

As management guru Henry Mintzberg says, most strategies are discovered rather than invented. The emphasis on focus in today’s business community leads to missed opportunities and a failure to find meaning. It is a misconception to think that the person who heads straight for the target will reach it the fastest. No one who has led an interesting life has headed straight for his ultimate goal.’

‘There has to be a pattern, of course. There is no melody without the percussion section, but the percussion section has to offer a foundation for the melody to build on. You really shouldn’t write a business plan either until you have already started operations.’

‘Truly vital companies resist the temptation to push everything into neat little boxes. Those companies are disciplined, productive and good at giving people room, as well. In everything, you have to have the courage to make a decision at the halfway point. That gets you moving and inspires enthusiasm in those around you; you don’t learn the other half until after that point.’

‘Karel Appel’s famous quote, “I’m just messing around,” is completely understandable to me. A good master craftsman can afford to mess around a bit; the pattern will emerge on its own. Appel’s primal strength has a child-like expression, an uninhibited feel that carries you to things that are not found in an inhibited context. That also made him disciplined and productive.’

and some guilders’ by Karel Appel,

Self-Portrait

between the computer, a pencil, and a typewriter half my day passes. One day it will be half a century. I live in strange cities and sometimes talk with strangers about matters strange to me. I listen to music a lot: bach, Mahler, Chopin, Shostakovich. I see three elements in music: weakness, power, and pain. The fourth has no name. I read poets, living and dead, who teach me tenacity, faith, and pride. I try to understand the great philosophers--but usually catch just scraps of their precious thoughts. I like to take long walks on Paris streets and watch my fellow creatures, quickened by envy, anger, desire; to trace a silver coin passing from hand to hand as it slowly loses its round shape (the emperor's profile is erased). beside me trees expressing nothing but a green, indifferent perfection. black birds pace the fields, waiting patiently like Spanish widows. I'm no longer young, but someone else is always older. I like deep sleep, when I cease to exist, and fast bike rides on country roads when poplars and houses dissolve like cumuli on sunny days. Sometimes in museums the paintings speak to me and irony suddenly vanishes. I love gazing at my wife's face. Every Sunday I call my father. Every other week I meet with friends, thus proving my fidelity. My country freed itself from one evil. I wish another liberation would follow. Could I help in this? I don't know. I'm truly not a child of the ocean, as Antonio Machado wrote about himself, but a child of air, mint and cello and not all the ways of the high world cross paths with the life that – so far – belongs to me.

Foreword

This year was a mixed bag for us here at De baak, keeping our shoulders to the wheel under an overcast sky, with occasional rays of sun breaking through. At the start of 2010, the focus was still on dealing with the aftermath of the recession by saving on costs, while simultaneously working to modernize De baak. Companies and participants have also changed in recent years and are increasingly asking De baak to provide customized solutions tailored to the times. In the second half of 2010, De baak was bolstered by the resurgent economy and was able to put its accounts in order again.

De baak displayed resilience and is willing and able to work on its mission with renewed enthusiasm, following internal improvements. Renovations in the Driebergen location are nearing completion and the theater is expected to be finished in early 2012. The Estate offers diverse and effective accommodations in a verdant natural setting, offering an appealing learning environment. Noordwijk aan Zee continues to be a major selling point for participants who are always seeking to sail beyond their horizons. The Antwerp location is a beautiful and welcome addition, serving the south of our fair country and Flanders.

The challenge in the coming year lies in continuing to develop the leadership programs. Excellent, well-trained Program Directors help tomorrow’s leaders to develop themselves in an international context, and enable them to expertly navigate and leverage social media. It will be an exciting year for De baak, a year in which it can pursue its desire to constantly anticipate emerging developments.

Everyone has put their heart and soul into renewal and recovery. The Supervisory board deeply appreciates the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by the Executive board, the staff members, and the members of the De baak Works Council. The Supervisory board would also like to thank the members of the Advisory board for their keen participation in discussing strategic plans for De baak. De baak is a fantastic place for fostering talent and serves as an inspiration to many.

Dedicated and determined: this is why DE bAAK is an organization that dares to set higher goals for its role in society and actively pursues inclusion. This society-minded organization has no shareholders, no owners, but it does have stakeholders. Its focus on returns and results guarantees continuity and enables De baak to make new ambitions a reality.

OUR MISSION De baak remains true to its mission: it is an exceptional enterprise that helps others and itself make progress through learning. What makes De baak exceptional can be smelled, seen and tasted. It is expressed in how we interact with clients, in how we organize, in the learning experiences we offer, in the places where De baak can be found, and in our focus on leadership and entrepreneurship. Our mission is even reflected in the set-up of the rooms at the De Horst Estate.

OUR vISION The crisis set socio-economic change in motion. Sustainable growth requires reinvention – not only of the financial and economic system, but of society as a whole. It demands a change in mindset. Can empathy conquer greed? Is there such a thing as sustainable economic growth? What does reindustrialization mean in practice? What changes are needed? The future of the Netherlands relies on values-driven leadershipand entrepreneurship in an increasingly international knowledge economy. In this context, leadership stands for striving to achieve higher goals, living out a vision, breaking out of habitualized patterns and maintaining a focus on people. Entrepreneurship is all about taking risks, recognizing or creating opportunities, and demonstrating dedication and tenacity. Where leadership is primarily person-oriented, entrepreneurship is business-driven. De baak links leadership and entrepreneurship by focusing on personal development: the human side of enterprise.

OUR PRINCIPLES De baak wants to continue to be a profitable enterprise that is also significant to society. Professionalism and idealism go hand in hand: the better our returns are, the greater our contribution to society will be. The profit statement already takes into account the fact that a percentage of our returns goes to civic projects. De baak does not donate money; it donates time. Every employee is encouraged to make his or her contribution. Sustainability is a guiding principle in all aspects of De baak, including our day-to-day operations. We are also committed to supporting diversity and equal access to learning.

‘Improvising based on a rock-solid vision.´

‘It’s striking to see that a solid knowledge of how things work is making a come-back in approaches to leadership.’

‘Conquering the fear and saying from the heart: this is the direction we’re heading in.’

‘You have to be willing to go deeper, talk to people, truly give them your attention.’

‘What I do inside is the same thing I do outside.’

‘The time for management is over.’

Enterprising and individual: Organizing it our way STRUCTURE De baak consists of a network of business Unitsthat are responsible for their own results, each serving the market with its own unique range of products. Together, the business Units form a neural network in which they share knowledge, collaborate with each other, and ensure that strategic objectives and market developments are optimally aligned. A business Unit is made up of a business Director, a number of Program Directors and a Unit Coordinator. The Directors of the business Units publish business Commitment Statements that set out the agreements they have reached with the Executive board about turnover and development.

Cruisers are Program Directors within De baak who are not affiliated with any one business Unit. Instead, they work as independent consultants within the company. They maintain close contact with their current and potential ‘clients’, the business Units. A results commitment is set with cruisers at the start of the year in the form of billable hours. How they achieve those results is their own responsibility. A talent manager supports the cruisers in their personal and professional development. In addition to the cruisers, external freelancers are also called in as needed.

De baak aims to achieve lower overhead, a flexible organizational structure and a corporate culture in which freedom can flourish in conjunction with personal responsibility. We believe that simplicity, mobility and personal authority enrich an organization and facilitate a better competitive position. The ongoing process of transitioning De baak towards digital operations is an important development that will lead to realization of this ambition.

Within De baak, the Community Services unit has professionals working in finance, human resources, program support and marketing. The business Units call on the services of these departments based on a shared services concept. De baak is committed to continuing professionalization of support services and launched a range of initiatives in 2010 to achieve that goal, including digitization. Our focus on modern approaches to work is fully in line with this commitment, and professionals working in administration and process support are no exception.

The Executive board of De baak is comprised of CEO Harry Starren and COO Faïza Dadi, who are assisted by the Senior Management Team, consisting of Director of Finance and ICT Martin Metselaar and Director of Organization & Personnel Ed Hagedorn. The Executive board focuses on operational management of the output and performance of the business Units. The De baak Works Councilholds regular consultations with the Executive board; in addition to formal meetings, an informal consultation also takes place twice a month over a cup of coffee.

In order to prevent an overemphasis on form over content, informal consultations also take place on certain topics, in the form of Taskforces. The Taskforces link market segments to specific content. Future developments may be leading towards a more fluid organization in which focus groups are organized on a topic, target

Faïza Dadi was voted the top ethnic female manager in the Netherlands in 2010. The jury report is cited as saying that she was ‘Soft on people, hard on targets.’ In Management Team (13 Aug. 2010), Dadi stated: ‘The term “glass ceiling” would only be justified if there were an intention to deliberately maintain the segregation.’ The established order does not have that negative intention in any way, according to 41-year-old Dadi, who is a woman and a member of an ethnic minority. ‘A few exceptions aside, it is more accurate to say that people do not yet see why a certain development - in this case diversity - is needed.’

MARKETING At De baak, marketing means that we are working ‘with’ our clients. Marketing belongs to everyone. We facilitate De baak staff and clients in marketing and work together to build the De baak community. What are our clients occupied with? It is not about asking for attention, but giving attention. When we focus on relationships, the client sees what De baak stands for and we enable clients to contribute to building our brand. In 2010, these mindsets and methods were expressed in a number of new projects. The new De baak website was launched in this context. The aim of the site is to inspire clients with regard to such themes as leadership and entrepreneurship, personal development and coaching. Looking at a theme or open program on the site, the visitor may also encounter poems, video clips, blogs and articles. Going live with the new site was not the ultimate objective; rather, it was the start of a new situation. All the De baak staff members are now responsible for the site content and can maintain the content on their own pages themselves. The Digital Studio now offers the opportunity for De baak staff to create their own communication media.

SOCIAL MEDIA De baak takes part in discussions in social media on topics like leadership and entrepreneurship. Internal experts use social networks and Twitter. De baak itself and its staff members communicate over the network.

MASTERY Five internal meetings (Mastery Roundtables) were held, starting from recommendations based on observations made by masters from among our own ranks.

SUSTAINAbILITY In August 2010, De baak achieved ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT Information management for the entire organization has been taken to the next level, with a particular focus on client and market data. Employee access to these key data was improved. A procurement registration system and teacher confirmation system were implemented successfully.

Personal developmentAs you move along your professional path, your insecurity follows close behind. It walks about ten yards behind you - just far enough from you to remain largely unnoticed, as long as everything is going smoothly. But when you encounter something in your path, bump into something unexpected, temporarily cannot move forward, your insecurity catches up with you. At that point, you face two problems at once: first, the problem in front of you, in the real, external world, that aspect of your work that we are so fond of referring to as a ‘challenge’; and second, your insecurity, which attacks you from behind.

What now? Classic solutions and management development strategies dictate the following course of action: make sure you develop skills, skills and even more skills. Make sure you never have to stand still. That you can resolve any challenge effortlessly, without delay, so your insecurity never catches up with you. That would be the senior professional: the person who can do everything.

If you take a good look at professionals, managers, all those well-educated people in the workforce, it is easy to detect the insecurity that lurks behind them. No matter what you are able to do, you will always have a lingering awareness of the insecurity that dogs your footsteps. Skills do not change that one iota.

Serious professionals can be recognized not by what they can do to solve problems, but by what they are when their solutions stop working. That is the essence of professional development.

Alles

TWO SUNS

When I sink to bed the sea lies still downstairsand the sun is as always ahead.

I’m fixing myself, a detail cut outof dark water. And later I’ll be by the boats,

sails light as uplifted voices and almost, among the laughter of gulls, light-hearted.

Yet in this ring of his I stand slantedat a date. And I see how, that far off,

he’s rising with another sun. Slapdash. Again. He called me Flower. Then Spring, Sexy, Sweetness,

Sweetest, Sweet, but lately more and moreRatherNot, NoLater, Please.

BusinessTHE bEST ACCORDING TO CLIENTS Opleiding & Carrière Magazine published the results of the Millian training and education report, which listed De baak as the highest-ranking organization in professionalism. ‘This is a confirmation of what we do,’ said valentijn Ouwens in response, in his capacity as Director of Open Programs at De baak. ‘Our total concept is not the only guarantee of professionalism. A professional is someone who’s good at his job. So we have good teachers and a significant part of our organization is focused on hospitality. We are a professional organization because everyone who works here is involved in the organization and engaged with our clients. We are closely connected here and we know why we do what we do. We express that in our work, and it shows.’ valentine concludes almost philosophically with the words: ‘It’s great if you can do something, but it also has to be imbued with the reason why you do that thing and the love that inspires you to do it.’

INTERNATIONALIZATION De baak is traditionally focused on co-creation with clients; increasingly, those clients are international or operate internationally. Our own program directors are increasingly active in international networks. In one such initiative, De baak set up the European ThinkTank for Post-Crisis Leadership, with nearly 25 European leaders from training institutes. De baak offered various programs in 2010 that were taught in English or in a bilingual Dutch-English structure. Our international network of professionals and coaches was expanded and enhanced this year. Published in English, The Human Side of Enterprise is a De baak publication intended to offer potential clients information about De baak in general and provide more details on its internationally oriented activities.

TASKFORCE: EDUCATION – LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND IN THE CLASSROOM The ‘First Class’ program is a combination of teacher training, hands-on practical training in the business sector, and leadership development. De baak organizes projects and events on a break-even basis and is eager to contribute towards the education of the future.

TASKFORCE: GOvERNMENT – LEADERSHIP bY DIRECTION De baak has been investing in this sector; these efforts are bearing fruit and showing potential for growth. Three baak staff members have been certified to work with Insights Discovery, a management tool for the public sector. The Speakers Lunches in The Hague offer fertile ground for future development.

TASKFORCE: FINANCIALS – vALUES-DRIvEN LEADERSHIPDe baak has a long history in this sector, which has enabled us to gain in-depth knowledge of its inner workings. About ‘Communicate with Impact’ ‘The participants were from ING, O´Neill, Duff & Phelps (consultancy), KLM/Air France and Equens. Participants from ING mentioned that it was really hard to find an English training course. And of course they already had good experiences with Baak courses. It was really a challenge to adjust to all the levels of learning. And still a lot to learn. To be continued.’

PRESS RELEASE

Ebb and Flood at the De Horst Estate in Driebergen

‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.’ (The Tempest, William Shakespeare)

Look, read and listen, in the bedroom-briefcase-artist project. The De Horst Estate presents the latest initiative from De Baak, the definitive training institute and knowledge center for leadership and entrepreneurship which also offers overnight accommodations: two new hotel buildings will be opening in mid-2011 named Ebb and Flood. Forty double rooms are being built here. Each room has its own story. Upon arrival, guests and attendees taking part in several-day programs on the estate are invited to explore the concepts offered by the intriguing names of their rooms.

Structure with a story to tell Instead of room numbers, the bedrooms have titles that refer to artworks like Cogito ergo sum by German artist Rosemarie Trockel, poetry collections like Bij eb is je eiland groter by Dutch poet K. Michel, and plays like Waiting for Godot by Irish author Samuel Beckett.

BachThe Bach room, for instance, was created by British architect Zaha Hadid as the perfect room for solos by Johann Sebastian Bach. She designed an open pavilion that is placed inside another room. ‘Like a cocoon,’ Hadid described it. ‘Bach wrote his music to be heard in the intimacy of the salons.’ The pavilion was on display during the 2010 Holland Festival in the gas tank at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. A monograph by Hadid and a book about Bach’s Cello Suites are provided in the room; a photograph of the pavilion and a quote by the architect hang on the wall. Visitors can listen to a number of CDs with solo pieces by Bach. The contents of the briefcase include a carefully compiled catalog of the museums, institutes, publishing houses and artists who collaborated on the project.

The Ebb and Flood bedroom-briefcase-artist project is the brainchild conceived and developed by curator/artist Jan van der Veer. Renowned artists from the Netherlands and abroad took part, contributing from 11 artistic disciplines and from the field of philosophy, and were showcased through the collections of the following museums, institutes and publishing houses, most of which are based in the Netherlands:

Adventurous learningDe baak is a visionary and influential institution. Since it was first established in the 1950s, it has focused on the ‘human side of enterprise’. This fundamental focus is hardwired in our DNA and continues to be our primary focus; it is this aspect that has made and continues to make De baak unique. Learning with De baak focuses on the personal effectiveness of course participants in relation to their organizations and to society as a whole. Our objective is to promote the quality of entrepreneurship and the positive long-term effects it has on the lives of individuals, the environment and society. De baak acts as a partner in learning and promotes the ability of people and organizations to learn for themselves.

It is important that what is learned is translated into visible results. For that reason, learning itself is embedded within the context of the organizations from which participants come, and incorporates action-learning projects and mentorships.

bE INSPIRED De baak leaves aside known facts, formulas and techniques and encourages individuals to use their own initiative, free thought association, and their ability to challenge familiar and accepted viewpoints, helping them develop their creative intelligence. This ensures that new perspectives open up, and opportunities arise for the creation of new connections: uniting knowledge with insight, individuals with other individuals, current worldviews with new worldviews, and science and research with natural leadership and intuition.

vARYING APPROACHES The programs offered by De baak consist of different and alternating interactive approaches in which participants engage in a continuous cycle of learning through experience, learning by doing, reflecting, thinking, experimenting and then doing it all over again. Actual situations that arise in the workplace frequently form part of the programs, as well as feedback on behavior. This approach demands active participation on the part of the course participants, urges them to exhibit a willingness to invest in themselves, and dares them to venture outside their comfort zone. In addition, all programs include elements of exploring and achieving, thus linking creativity to achieving results and boosting (business) performance.

SHIFTING GEARS Our relationship with society, our commitments to others, and the way we handle dependent factors that arise: all these aspects demand our attention. In this hectic environment, examining your personal motivations and recognizing your own needs and what makes you who you are is only possible in an atmosphere of calm, both on an individual level and in interaction with others. Even during that reflective and meaningful part of the process, there comes a time when you have to shift your attention away from yourself and back to the world outside. How can you learn to deliberately shift your focus to that bigger picture over and over again? The community of professionals at De baak establishes the connections, embodies them, and passes them on to others, facilitating and developing the human side of enterprise: the learning and working individual.

Learning with De baak is about learning through enterprise, about developing and growing. It’s about daring to leave the straight, well-trodden path linking the means to an ultimate goal. Your mind and spirit need to have the freedom to wander, even get lost in the wild if possible. breaking free of the obstructions of processes that have bogged down means learning to combine rational and analytical thinking with a non-linear, multidisciplinary approach. Learning through enterprise can help you develop creativity, intuition and entrepreneurship.

Group design & teacherless learning The Sustainable Road Forward illustrates how we translate leadership and entrepreneurship into a program on teacherless learning, in which learning and working go hand in hand. The theme is sustainability. We contacted seven top-ranking companies in different sectors to ensure an interesting group design. Each company has one day to show what they excel at, allowing the best of the best to learn from each other. Each company can send four course participants: two from the internal organization (internal branding) and two from outside the company (external branding). The participating companies pay De baak to arrange organization and facilitation. Each company is responsible for one full day. De baak offers the context, facilitates interaction and involves its network in the process. De baak does not teach the participants how they should pursue sustainability based on theories and models; instead, the participants each contribute their own best practices.

LEARNING CONCEPTS De baak does not create courses, training sessions or ‘flat’ programs. Instead, De baak designs programs based on ambitious learning concepts. Examples include presencing and emergent space, formulating and answering questions that arise in the learning process using methods based on self-activation of the participants.

GROUP DESIGN Part of the De baak approach is ensuring a good mix of people in the groups. Group design helps by deliberately aiming for attractively heterogeneous combinations. The ideal De baak group would have equal numbers of men and women and represent both cultural and multinational diversity. We utilize differences and facilitate the process of developing meaning and significance.

PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL De baak excels at facilitating meetings and online activities. The digital learning environment is developing rapidly, but is not yet ready to stand alone without the added value of physical encounters on location. Our exceptional locations help ensure that face-to-face encounters are intense and invaluable.

AMSTERDAM: URbAN LEARNING The ‘city safari’ expeditions to Amsterdam, organized by De baak, are highly valued by participants such as those from De Nieuwe Manager and Something Special. Our presence in Amsterdam is intended to target expats, lawyers, accountants, consultants and creative media professionals working in the Zuidas business district of Amsterdam and at international headquarters. De baak has continued its collaboration with Pakhuis De Zwijger and Amsterdam bright City. De baak has become a partner in the activities in relation to the Olympic Stadium as part of a public-private foundation, guided by the Olympic principle of moving from developing talent to developing the very best talent. Activities in Amsterdam take place on location. The De baak location in the former burgerweeshuis orphanage, a 1960s building designed by architect Aldo van Eyck, is used primarily as an office. To save on costs, part of the location is sub-let to Freetime Company.

ANTWERP March 26, 2010 was the first anniversary of the establishment of the De baak location in Antwerp. Den brandt Castle is an appealing location which is conducive to learning activities. Situated in the lovely Middelheim Park, the coach house on the Den brandt estate has a charming, informal atmosphere that welcomes groups of all sorts. Antwerp offers a wealth of culinary, social and cultural opportunities. Our aim is to work from this location to build bridges between Flanders and the Netherlands. The Flemish-Dutch activities showed great promise this year and will become an independent baak subsidiary as per January 1, 2011 under the name of De baak Zuidelijke Nederlanden (bZN), led by William Strobbe.

THE HAGUE The Malietoren location has been given a new lease on life thanks to the Speakers Lunch, a monthly interactive event highlighting a topical theme. Themes in 2010 included Young Talent, Doing business with China, and Integrity - or the role of the conscience.

DRIEbERGEN The De Horst Estate in Driebergen is a campus where knowledge-intensive organizations find room to work. It is a place that welcomes leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals who are seeking inspiration. The green landscape has an atmosphere that invites experimentation, encouraging visitors to explore and share knowledge and insights. Implementation of the plans for the new building were a major focus this year, resulting in a sustainable learning/working structure that offers an appealing environment and fantastic hotel rooms. A pre-opening took place in April; the project will be fully completed in 2011. An impression of how the building process has gone is provided throughout this annual report.

NOORDWIJK Our aim is to build our own beach pavilion in Noordwijk, intensifying the beach experience and helping us to achieve our ambition of doing as much as possible outdoors, within the limits of feasibility: experience-based learning on the beach, on the patio, and in the building on the seashore. The Noordwijk location underwent major renovations this year; further transformation is planned following the completion of the new building in Driebergen. Noordwijk focuses as much as possible on program implementation, while back-office activities will increasingly be concentrated in Driebergen. Some typical examples of activities at this location include our links with the Opera aan Zee events, the Painting Festival, and the week’s holiday that we provide for children with autism and their families, in cooperation with the Papageno Foundation.

SHANGHAI Mutual investments between China and the Netherlands are increasing. De baak is actively investing in its ties to China by creating a network, building relationships, and making connections between China and the Netherlands. The Learning Journeys also play a role, offered in the framework of The baak Leap program (previously The New Manager). These Learning Journeys can also be organized independently. De baak is working with two local partners in China: Human Insight and CbC. The Dutch Chinese Entrepreneurship Week initiated by De baak was held in May, attracting about 200 participants spread over six events. Related events were held in the Netherlands as well. De baak represents Dutch entrepreneurial culture in Shanghai and opens doors for Chinese investors in the Netherlands.

What do you want to create? Colin Benders, alias Kyteman, reached a peak in 2009 with his Hip Hop Orchestra, while already knowing when to stop. In his own free state of Kytopia, he is now looking deeper into the music, himself and the magic of friendship in cooperation.

How would you describe the way music is made in the Hip Hop Orchestra? ‘With 24 people, you have a lot of possibilities based purely on intuition and action/reaction, without having to write a single chord or note. It all develops in the moment itself.’

How do you create freedom in creation? ‘The Hip Hop Orchestra is not a democracy. The reason that there is freedom on all these fronts is because I decided that there should be freedom on these fronts. Other than that, it remains my thing. I always decide the course I take and people are always free to go along with it if they want to.’

How do you work together in Kytopia? ‘It is a kind of anarchy here. We work on the basis of spreading enthusiasm. Who joins in? When you have a great idea, everyone joins in. Everyone has both an ‘I’ and a ‘we’ position here. You do not build on personal credit but on making a beautiful ‘thing.’ As soon as collecting credit becomes a direct objective, you block a lot of things and you miss out on opportunities.’

5. Achieving impressive resultsBaakOpen

SERvICE/PRODUCT baakOpen provided over forty different training courses in 2010, which each took place on one or more occasions. The turnover from the open programs rose by 5% in 2010. Successful programs were those on communication and leadership, including both time-honored ones and new programs. The longer, more expensive programs in the senior leadership segment had a hard time in 2010. On January 1, 2010, De baak business Operations was set up as a semi-independent unit, covering functional and managerial programs that focus on contextual expertise and understanding.

FOCUS baakOpen introduced more focus in 2010, linking inspiration to results-driven approaches. We worked to achieve a deeper understanding of the client and his/her underlying needs, and to make results more quantifiable. We monitor clients and are more pro-active in initiating and intensifying contact. baakOpen has noted client demands for different learning methods, which can increasingly be offered in any place, at any time. This shift will enrich and enhance the range of options offered by De baak; the first steps in that direction were taken in 2010.

MARKET 261 programs were carried out, 19 more than in 2009. viewed in terms of participant numbers, 200 more course participants attended baakOpen programs. Growth was seen primarily among men aged 30-34 and 35-39. The number of women stayed the same and remains at 40% of participants. baakOpen showed growth in all the major sectors. Other Services, Construction & Industry and Financial Services were the sectors that grew the most. 52% of the participants attended programs based on a positive experience by the individual in question or someone from his/her own network. Moreover, almost a quarter of course participants ended up coming to a baak program via internet (23%).

TEAM As of June 2010, valentijn Ouwens has handed over his responsibilities to Kris Rote. There were also a number of changes in the team, as a program director and a program assistant left. As a result, the team consisted of eleven people at the end of 2010. Freelance commercial capacity was called in to supplement the team, focusing mainly on following up on leads. Nearly 400 trainers and teachers work in programs for baakOpen, making it an important employer within De baak. Two students carried out their graduation projects at baakOpen.

Coaching leadership I had learned some tips and tricks in training sessions before, but I actually achieved double-loop learning in this training program. Practicing coaching skills also means that you yourself receive coaching from the other people in your group. It was an incredibly valuable experience for me! I not only gained a better sense of my own coaching style, I also became aware of a mechanism inside myself that was presenting an obstacle. I learned a lot!Daphne Katzin-Cohen

BaakMD

SERvICE/PRODUCT The baakMD business Unit provides intensive in-company programs in leadership, management and organizational development. The aims, ambitions and structure of MD programs are designed in close consultation with the client, facilitating convergence between work and learning. Co-creation ensures that tailored programs are fully customized to a client’s needs. These programs can be roughly sub-divided into two categories.

The first type of program, Talent Development, is aimed at large organizations that work with ‘succession planning’: grooming talented and promising individuals for the higher management roles that entail greater responsibility. There are various tracks within this ‘leadership pipeline’. It begins with the Young Professionals program, which focuses on ‘leading yourself and your team’. Following on from this, and still aimed at these ‘high-potential’ individuals, a middle-management program looks at ‘leading people and processes’. Finally, the ‘top talent’ within this high-potential group are served by a program for top management on the theme of ‘leading the business’. Each program offers its own unique opportunities to provide added value through personal, organizational and business development.

A second type of program provided by baakMD is designed for medium-sized companies. In order to be able to respond to new, strategically-oriented business demands, these companies have a need for leadership and organizational development training. baakMD is developing increasingly specific MD programs especially for this purpose. One example of a program of this type is the MD program developed in collaboration with the Connexxion public transport company.

The international MD programs include, for example, East Meets West, a program which has been provided to managers of the Indian Division Railway for a number of years, offered in collaboration with HEC, a French business school.

MARKET The top 5 clients of baakMD are all major financial service providers. The proportion of clients from the non-profit and governmental sectors is increasing steadily, as is the turnover in this market segment. A growing number of clients from the government and care sectors are choosing De baak.

TEAM The baakMD team consists of twelve people, under the leadership of Jules Koster, the business Unit Director. The program directors at baak MD perform a mix of tasks. In addition to acquiring contracts and conducting programs, the program directors also fulfill an important role in account management..

All rise for the story behind the numbers Risk mitigation and social accountability are increasingly important factors in all sectors, and the public sector is no exception. You set targets for results and performance and assess how well you’re doing. But that doesn’t mean that you have to adopt every aspect of the performance-driven logic that dominates the private sector. Many institutions come up with many different key performance indicators (KPIs) to show that they’re doing well. In many cases, the four most important KPIs are an accurate indication of 90% of the performances, while the last 10% are shown by a dashboard that monitors 100 tiny factors, making it impossible to see anything. If we start assessing government authorities based on performance indicators, we lose sight of the story behind those numbers - but in the public sector, even more so than in the private sector, the story behind the numbers is more important than the numbers themselves. I’ve noticed that some leaders in the government would prefer to focus more on the quality of the services they provide to society. Do you have the courage to micro-manage less, to let go of the illusion that you can gain control of ‘it’? Jules Koster, director of BaakMD

Archieving impressing results Characteristics of the approach Prompt action with immediate results: taking action now, immediate renewal, immediate change, immediate innovation.

BaakBlue

SERvICE/PRODUCT baakblue offers different perspectives. This involves enriching the strategy, providing new marketing ideas, ensuring innovation through the development of the individuals involved. The result: an improved ability to respond to a changing market. This means breaking free from the tyranny of the well-worn paths and exploring new directions. Improving your external orientation, and collaborating to create an enterprising culture. becoming your own ‘trend-watcher’, connecting within the market in a different way, connecting with clients and collaborating with others. Getting involved in co-innovation processes. Energy, inspiration and renewal.

New constructs: links between working and learning, between strategy, innovation, and human behavior, between clients, various stakeholders and organizations, between thinking and doing, between public sector and private sector.

baakblue views the process of strategy and innovation as an integrated process (rather than a serial one): strategy and innovation have an impact on the organization and the people that work within it. In our approach, ‘invention’ and implementation go hand in hand. Development is accompanied by different behaviors and different styles of leadership. After all, the success of strategy creation, entrepreneurship and innovation is determined by a process that exists within and between individuals. They are the driving force behind the whole process. It is not technology, expertise or information that is the deciding factor, but rather the persons responsible for the process, and their ability to achieve the most important strategic objectives. The process itself and the interaction between the individuals involved are representative of the essence of innovation and change. It is not just a matter of defining ambitions and long-term strategies and then being obliged to achieve them; it is actually a matter of discovering the opportunities that exist for the future while working together in the present, practicing the behavior relevant to the achievement of your objectives. Exemplary behavior is not just something you agree on beforehand, to be used exclusively in the implementation stage; rather, it forms a guiding principle throughout the process.

MARKET baakblue serves a wide variety of clients. We work with corporate organizations, SMEs/entrepreneurs in growth processes, and the government.

TEAM baakblue is currently working with a core team of four individuals, under the leadership of Marieke van der Giessen, collaborating with a group of committed freelancers.

Wende Snijders Uit: Nexus, 2010/Nummer 55, Hoop en vertroosting - De muzen spreken, p. 48: Inleiding 'Zin in vergeving' van Wende Snijders.

Zin in vergeving

FEELING A DESIRE FOR FORGIvENESS

There are moments when I am looking, out there in the world outside, just like everyone else, looking for a sign of hope and comfort.I look for a template out there, a model in which I can pour the naked emotion, the naked truth, so I can look at it, walk around it and process it.A melody line in a song, a line in a book or poem, an assertion can be that hook to hang it on and when it’s ight, I breathe easier. It sometimes happens the other way; I am overcome by an image, a word, a scent that offers reassurance that I was not even aware of needing. That is the ultimate reassurance to me: a comfort that goes beyond the anecdotal, reaches out for you, in the knowledge that we always need to be comforted at least a little bit.I find that comfort in the poem by South African writer Antjie Krog, ‘Country of Grief and Grace’.I’ve known it for years.I had it with me in my bag for a while as a rabbit’s foot.It consists of ten parts and each and every time, at exactly the same point, she hits me with her words at exactly that spot in my gut where it resonates ‘yes, yes, yes!’.Yes, I’d like to ease someone like that sometime too.It has everything within its confines: the small and the great.I’ve read it so many times already and it reads differently every time. Some days it’s about the struggle between two lovers, sometimes about family, and on some days it’s about how people deal with countries, power and liberation. It breaks over you like a wave, that poem, it massages your heart in such a way that you want forgiveness at the end. That you feel a desire to start over. That you believe, despite it all, that it is possible.I feel comforted when I am not being lied to.I feel comforted when the painful things stay visible as they are, not suppressed, not swept under the carpet.I feel comforted when the painfulness, the powerlessness is put into the spotlight.I feel comforted when it is then engulfed again in subtle tenderness:it is what it is, this is the way it is, but there is hope, there is a new beginning, hope exists, it exists.I want to believe in that, I look for that connection in the world, I find it in the poem by Antjie Krog.

BaakImpact

SERvICE/PRODUCT baakImpact projects are defined in terms of time, subject and participant group. In all our programs, however short, our aim is for clients to get to know De baak and to experience what we stand for. The content varies from a training course about the role and influence of a team of advisors, to providing a facilitator for annual plan discussions at a client‘s premises or at a team-building meeting. In order to allow the client to see the options available for short, tailor-made training courses, we provide workshops via www.debaakin1dag.nl.

MARKET The market for brief, well-organized, specifically designed training courses continued to be good in 2010. The financial results for 2010 reflect this fact. baakImpact has a wide variety of clients. In addition to the familiar large clients served by De baak, baakImpact gained a number of very small new clients. One of the exceptional projects we started in 2010 is our partnership with the Dutch Council for Refugees (VluchtelingenWerk Nederland), which was initiated by Navid Otaredian. The programs focused on increasing professionalism in the Dutch Council for Refugees and promoting diversity among its own ranks. These baak programs were done on a break-even basis.

TEAM baakImpact consists of Rolien van Dijk, Rutger Slump, Miracle Helder and Elke visser. We work with both internal and external coaches in carrying out the numerous - and very diverse - types of assignments handled by baakImpact.

At the Diversity Day, Margreet took the workshop on Investing in Mastery. ‘I came here without any preconceptions. I hope that I will be able to take with me the personal growth I achieve here and use it at the Dutch Council for Refugees. Maybe it will help me respond more effectively to the client’s needs.’

BaakChange

SERvICE/PRODUCT Our societal and political climate changes constantly. Economic turbulence, environmental threats and a rapidly ageing population affect how we work and how we live. baakChange offers organizations a unique way to develop innovative approaches to urgent issues and to explore alternative options. This method is not based on predefined modules and it certainly does not produce cookie-cutter answers. baakChanges works with an organization from the inside out, defining their essential question, figuring out the aspects that they want or need to change or influence in relation to change processes. The person who requested assistance is invited to work with a team on the project. These two half-day sessions are titled ‘Can changes still be made?’ and are offered free of charge by De baak.

Sacha Kluvers: ‘In one full day, they not only experience first-hand how we work, but also gain a clear understanding of what they want to change and why, and what it would take to make that happen. Then we sit down together and design a tailor-made change process within a set budget. It’s a very efficient approach.’ Annemarie de Jong: ‘And if a team concludes after one day that it’s not what they’re looking for, there are no strings attached. No cure, no pay. but up to now we’ve never had an applicant who didn’t want to continue.’

The baakChange programs are also a key source of innovations for baakMD and baakOpen.

bUSINESSES ARE SOMETIMES TRAPPED INSIDE THEIR OWN ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE Once an organization has been structured in a certain way, it seems to be set in stone. People stop wondering why everyone keeps doing things the way they have always been done, and never ask if there might be a more effective approach. When nothing is open to suggestions in an organization and everything is taken for granted, we see stagnation, which leads to irreversible decline. De Jong: ‘You could say that baakChange offers essential psychological and social fitness for businesses. If a company invests in business fitness at set times, it not only cuts costs but will ultimately lead to major benefits. For example, the rate of employee illness would drop.’ The police force in the Dutch province of Drenthe was a significant new client in 2010.

TEAM baakChange consists of Annemarie de Jong and Sacha Kluvers.

‘I see change as jazz or improv; we know where we start and where we’re headed, but we have no idea exactly how we’re going to get there or where it will end. That’s what makes it so intensely powerful, because it makes it possible to respond to whatever happens, rather than being trapped in a long course of action that we came up with ages ago. Still, jazz and improv do have clear frameworks to ensure that we don’t lose sight of each other in the process. Working without a frame of reference is like sailing on a lake without a church steeple to use as a landmark; not many people have the courage to try that.’ Bas Haring

BaakHospitality

SERvICE/PRODUCT baakHospitality aims to achieve an optimum balance between learning, working and meeting others in the right environment of a professional business operation. As a communicator and facilitator for internal and external clients, this business unit is all about convergence and connections. baakHospitality enhances its knowledge base by asking business relations and clients about what motivates them and listening closely to their responses. How do people want to learn? How have motivations changed over the past generations? How do people prefer to meet each other? And what works well in the learning context that De baak provides? building on its extensive knowledge, experience, and development, baakHospitality always actively works to improve its professional services in creating inspiring learning environments.

The sustainable food concept has continued to develop, emphasizing the importance of health, vitality, and sustainability in products and services, including organic and fair-trade considerations. We have also become more aware of our environment, the impact we have on it and the role we play within it. based on these factors, we are able to recommend combinations, daring to think outside the box and be distinctive. This approach has resulted in a unique baakHospitality concept.

MARKET baakHospitality serves both the internal and external market. Consideration is always given to the suitability of the external clients with respect to the learning context of a baak site. Our efforts in this third-party market have been intensified, since the results have declined compared to 2009. Thanks to the fantastic weather in the summer of 2010, baak Seaside achieved considerable popularity in the leisure market. by effectively combining knowledge and experience with the De baak programs, we were able to set up an amazing event on the De Horst Estate that is a shining example of collaborative design. Knowledge-intensive activities in general have decreased in size, and the number of guests at the sites has decreased as a result.

TEAM baakHospitality works with a team of 68 staff members, led by Guendaline Stinkens. As traditional roles and responsibilities blur, other work formats are being implemented that focus on sharing knowledge and experience. This enhanced focus helps all those involved to develop their individual talents and contribute to the innovative baakHospitality approach.

How do we help our guests stay fit and alert during their stay? ‘We come up with a fully customized program from breakfast through to dinner; in addition, we encourage people to have tea instead of coffee and provide access to healthy fruit juices all day long. Sweet and savory snacks are offered in the form of dried fruits, nuts and chocolate. Dried fruit has more nutritional content than fresh fruit, offering higher levels of complex sugars, as well as vitamins, minerals, fiber, and bioactive ingredients. Our nutritional program for breakfast and lunch primarily focuses on easily digested proteins.’ Jean-Paul Hassing, chef-de-cuisineBaak Noordwijk

Europees Instituut, institute for education in coaching and counseling SERvICE/PRODUCT The Europees Instituut offers post-graduate continuing professional education in coaching and counseling. The training exercises and teaching sessions generally take place in the weekends in the beautiful and inspiring setting of the De Horst Estate. New additions in 2010 included specializations in career counseling and team coaching for professionals. In 2010, the institute became an ‘authorized service provider’ for Flanders, belgium.

MARKET The students vary widely in terms of age, current job, background and sector of employment. The main common denominators were the desire for ‘personal growth in addition to professional development’ and the need for an in-depth training program. The Alumni Platform got off to a good start in 2010, offering several inspiring and networking activities each year.

TEAM The institute works with a team of eight staff members (4.3 FTE), led by Heleen Hordijk. The trainers and teachers are hired in externally.

Wet & Werkgever SERvICE/PRODUCT Wet & Werkgever was established as a collaborative association between De baak and the employers’ association AWvN. In 2010, it offers tailor-made courses on employment law, employment terms and conditions, and labor relations. This collaborative association ended as per January 1, 2011. The most important programs that De baak had contributed to the joint venture were incorporated into De baak in the labor relations and employment law cluster under De baak Operational Management, a sub-unit of baakOpen.

MARKET Clients came from the construction, industry and service sectors; the majority held a management position in the field of HR.

TEAM In 2010, Wet & Werkgever consisted of a team of two staff members, initially led by valéry Oude Groen and later led by Ludo Fassaert.

New Venture New venture is an independent foundation affiliated with De baak. Originally established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and McKinsey & Company consultancy firm, New venture started out as a business plan competition to support innovative start-ups. New venture also offers seminars on feasibility, sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), marketing, intellectual property, funding, and access to professional networks. 469 ideas were submitted in 2010; the three most innovative entrepreneurs chosen from among the participating start-ups each received a € 25,000 euro prize, presented to them by Joop Wijn.

‘The way you can help people solve their own problems, through things like active listening and asking the right questions, is fascinating to me.’ Marjon Adriaansen, in training as a coach/counselor

‘The long-term structure is important in these types of courses. The way I see it, you’re not here to learn by picking up a few tricks. You’re dealing with people, and that takes a great deal of care and professionalism. A multi-year course is appropriate to the professional and personal development that a coach or counselor should have!’ Jan Verbraak, in training as a coach/counselor

New Venture winners in 2010 Rick Scholte and Vincent Locht, from Sorama: cameras and visualization software for tracking down disruptive noises Eline van Beest, from NightBalance: she developed a sensor strap to help train people to maintain a healthy sleeping posture - as a remedy for snoring, sleep apnea, and neck and back pain Nicole Snoeker from 2style4you, an online application that helps women choose clothing that flatters their figure

RObIN HOOD

Halfopen. En klein.

RObIN HOOD

He created kites from tin cans, thrones from silverware, captured the centre of the earth in a wine bottle, let lava sing, ate the school treats the night before a birthday because there was nothing else in the house except for twenty-four sugar-pasted key-shaped pieces of licorice. He was Robin Hood, prince Lion-heart, drawing storm from silences, land from flood tide.He drew circles that we were supposed to understand, scribbling a mathema-tics textbook to pieces. Spitfire, dove-tamer, hothead. Slid us into the world of free candy under the counter of the bijenkorf.Licorice trophies in layers of dust and grit. He had a horse, a vW bug, a Nis-san, a Mercedes, and now he cycles to work; his old core needs a kick start to keep ticking.

The man who calls about laptops, screws, beams, word for mac, a new drill, didn’t know what to say when a traffic cop gave him a ticket he didn’t deserve and laughed at his jumbled tale of injustice. He raised a fist. Half-open. And small.

De Baak: staff De baak is a multi-faceted and versatile organization, a club of strong-willed individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds, training and experiences. Our contribution to society, sustainable enterprise, our culture of collaboration, identity and the space we provide for personal development and professional growth all form part of our jazzy culture. Our staff are given as much responsibility for their own work as possible, and enjoy a considerable degree of freedom to shape how they work. The De baak values are the foundation for how work is structured and how we interact with each other.

STAFF MEMbERS249 employees, of which 69 men/180 women 8 apprentices (7 men/1 woman) and 21 interns (10 men/11 women) 160 part-timers and 89 full-timers 186 with permanent contracts and 63 with temporary contracts

STAFF ARRIvALS AND DEPARTURES 77 staff members joined (including 45 interns/8 apprentices); 83 staff members left (including 36 interns/8 apprentices).

THE NEW WORLD OF WORK The ‘New World of Work’ system is intended to enable all staff members to work without being dependent on set times or specific platforms. The aim is to realize an expansion in the accessibility of De baak and a better work-life balance among its staff.

Values

CONNECTIONRESPONSIBILITY ACCOUNTABILITY FREEDOM TRUST

The New World of Work It’s already been almost two years since the first time I considered the concept. It immediately raises the question: what’s so ‘new’ about it? It’s been done for centuries… the merchant traveling with a caravan was certainly one of the earliest examples. It also begs the question of whether a separation between time for work and time for relaxation even existed centuries ago.

Program Organization ran pilot projects last year on the theme of The New World of Work. Program Organization is a logistical support department. Lots of arranging, telephone calls and client contact. Then we come to the next question: why do we actually want this to happen? Tangible, quantifiable goals are to reduce absence due to illness, and to achieve a better work-life balance; also, as a socially responsible enterprise, we would like to contribute to the environment by driving less.Hyke Zoon

De Baak: Staff

vITALITY 183 colleagues (73.5%) have not been absent from work due to illness. Our employees have been in good health and present at work for 95.7% of the time. Maternity leave in 2010 was 2.43%. Absence due to illness at De baak: 4.3%. Absence rate: 1.14%. In the business Units: 4.7% (excl.) In Community Services: 4.3% (excl.) In Hospitality: 6.26% (excl.)

In total, staff called in sick on 343 occasions and announced recovery on 336. 84.4% short-term absence (maximum of 7 days) 10.48% medium-term absence (up to six weeks) 6.26% long-term absence (more than six weeks)

DIvERSITY Investing in internationalization and increasing diversity among our staff was largely on hold in 2010 due to the economic downturn. However, even from this ‘stand-by status’, De baak continued to work on creating new openings. In future expansions, international orientation (such as multilingual skills and/or international roots) will take priority. Due to the current gender ratio at De baak, an increase in male colleagues would be preferred in order to facilitate diverse teams and support De baak as a whole. Women are fully represented in senior and upper management. In view of the fact that diversity and gender equality continue to be a natural focus, we took part in the ‘Talent naar de Top’ charter again in 2010.

Apprenticeship lunches In 2010, we started organizing lunch events for apprentices and interns. This tradition will be continued in 2011, in line with our growing awareness that De Baak can make a valuable contribution to strengthening relationships between the educational institutions and the business community. These exchanges between different stakeholders involved in apprenticeships and internships take place in a broader context – from secondary vocational education through to university: how do businesses, schools/institutes, and students/pupils find each other?

Practical training company In June, De Baak signed a letter of intent expressing its plan to work with the ROC Leiden regional training centre to set up a practical training company at De Baak. To facilitate that aim, De Baak is creating a practical training environment in BaakHospitality. Students will be trained to combine personal leadership and in-depth expertise.

Key diversity indicatorsWomen at De Baak: 79% There are a total of 20 people in total in senior and upper management at De Baak, 13 of whom are women: 65%

International There are 26 people (10.5%) working at De Baak who are not exclusively from a Dutch background.

De Baak: Staff

SUSTAINAbILITY 2010 saw a deliberate focus on sustainability and the various projects initiated in this context. For example, we encourage staff members to travel to De baak by bicycle (borrow an electric bicycle for a month) and a system has been set up to allow colleagues to invest and exchange their time independently, making it possible to develop socially relevant projects and activities.

YOUNG PEOPLE Collaboration with young people has taken off in the form of the relationships we establish with schools (apprenticeship lunches) and the increased number of apprentices and interns. The number of apprentices and interns at baakHospitality increased from 47 in 2009 to 65 in 2010. This 28% increase is due to the desire and intention to actively pursue collaboration with new generations, preferably with a bi-cultural background.

SOCIAL MEDIA by strengthening our network organization and tailoring our structure more specifically to facilitate that process, we have noted an increasing focus on social media and the role it plays in finding new colleagues.

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE Over the past year, De baak focused on developing our operational excellence to ensure that we maximize effective and efficient utilization of all our operational competences, resources and capacities. Digitization is key in this context. Tasks such as performance management, support for staff members on sick leave, and diversity recruitment are increasingly shifting towards line management and the professionals. Self-service is the watchword here. Since 2010, staff members receive their pay slip in a digital format and can access all relevant data anytime and anywhere.

PROFESSIONALIZATION baak professionals took part in a process that combines learning and working in such a way that professional development benefits the project and the client. This program not only aims to improve quality, but also enhances innovation in the range of services we offer. Examples include: working with emergent space, facilitating a nature week in Switzerland, program design, presencing, and facilitation.

Moving through nature I led a knowledge café on the brain at De Baak this week. From the parking lot in Driebergen, I walked through the snow-covered park to the entrance. The ducks in the pond, just as surprised by the cold as we were, sat huddled close together. My breath puffed out in clouds of steam. Our organization is quite proud of our beautiful learning sites in Noordwijk, Driebergen, and Antwerp, offering beach, forest and park environments. Lots of nature and lots of room to move. Why does that matter?

Since the start of our evolution, we have always been in motion - almost constant motion. Men probably traveled 10-20 kilometers a day, women about half that. Our brains developed while we trained our bodies, because the roads we traveled were not smooth and paved. Even today, the best predictor for successful ageing is the extent to which a person has led a mobile, active life. It doesn’t even take much movement. Just going for a walk a few times a week already has a positive influence. Getting 30 minutes of intense exercise two to three times a week is even better. The risk of senility is cut in half, while the risk of developing Alzheimer’s is slashed by over 60% (!).

Various studies also show that people who have a natural view to look at are generally in a better mood, can concentrate better, and are able to cope more effectively with challenges than people who are surrounded by concrete and other people. Nature offers more rest and more room.

Tired? Don’t have a cup of coffee or a snack to wake yourself up. Go outside; go look for the trees, grass, birds, oxygen. The ART of nature.

De Baak www.debaak.nlWHAT REMAINS AND WHAT IS YET TO COME: THE POWER OF

PROGRESSIVE INSIGHT Koningin Astridboulevard 23, 2202 BJ Noordwijk

De baak experienced an exciting and educational time between 2008 and 2010. We challenged ourselves and each other to fully enjoy the challenges and insights offered by an economic and environmental crisis, even if it did not always feel like a privilege. As it turned out, diminished economic prosperity enhanced the development of De baak. The ambitions that De baak set for itself (Strategic Plan 2011-2014) were accomplished by intensifying our focus. We are making De baak more appealing to our clients and the market by sharing the insights gained in baakblue and baakChange and incorporating that expertise into our programs. In doing so, we are creating room for the New World of Work.Consequently, we will be transitioning towards a more fluid structure for our organization and our programs. We will continue to work in focus groups, targeting client groups, market segments, and/or fields of knowledge. Regularly taking stock of trends and developments and adapting the focus groups in line with these insights will make our dynamic approaches more high-profile, and will increase our contribution to society. Moreover, this organizational format gives a large group of professionals the opportunity to gain experience in guidance and leadership, based on content-driven engagement. An organizational structure based on business units has taught us about internal entrepreneurship. This approach has yielded insights that allow us to structure the form of the organization much more effectively. Working on themes in focus groups contributes to the creation of a fluid organization that is flexible enough to track current and future markets quickly as changes emerge, and to serve those markets effectively.

The growth forecast for 2011 is 9%. We plan to increase the likelihood that potential clients will decide to commit to assignments by expanding the range of our offers. Clients will receive a proposal that reflects various methods used at De baak. We will continue our commitment to focus groups by investing targeted and concentrated energy in that area. We are working on further development of the professionalization program for current and new program directors in order to strengthen the professional foundation of De baak. That foundation relies on the roles of the Specialist (with access to a wealth of intervention strategies for groups and individuals), the Connector (facilitating encounters), and the venturer (from leadership to entrepreneurship, innovation). We are setting up an environmental management system that will be assessed at scheduled intervals to ensure constant suitability, appropriateness, and effectiveness. We will be continuing to convert work processes to digital formats to support our commitment to the New World of Work.
