A C M U P R A Y E R
Creative and compassionate God
You call each and every one of us to co-operate with
your plan of salvation.
From the very first moment when your spirit
hovered over the deep you saw that ‘it was good’.
Yet time and time again we have built barriers,
pointed fingers and built up our own kingdoms.
Our calling is deep and personal and will involve
stepping out in faith.
Lord and friend, you plan to use us– with all our
imperfections and baggage– each time we fall you
gently pick us up.
Your Son Jesus taught us the way of peace and
wholeness– and reminded us that this gift was
intended for all people– rich and poor, famous and
forgotten, weak and strong.
We praise you for the missionary societies and
congregations who selflessly work for your kingdom
here on earth. Give their members grace to be signs
of hope in this generation—as in the past.
Pour out your blessings on our missionary
endeavours– which are not for our own sake but for
your kingdom to come.
Amen

There have been three meetings of the
Executive Committee since the last agm:
November 2010, March 2011 and June
2011.
At the first of these meetings Fr Joseph
Carmazzo MCCJ was invited as a guest.
The committee recognised his gifts and
abilities and asked him to use them to
help the CMU. He agreed to help for as
long as was practicable.
The Executive has attempted to carry
forward the various projects and visions
of the 2010 AGM.
A). Seminary Project: One seminary had
expressed a limited interest in a
missionary involvement. 2 others have
not shown any real interest, but I have
spoken with one rector
and hope to make a
further approach to the
other. The fourth
seminary has closed
during this period.
As we continue our
discussions with the
seminaries it is now
necessary to be able to
demonstrate what we
are able to offer. I will
therefore be distributing questionnaires
at this meeting to be taken for
provincials, superiors and leadership
teams. It is an attempt to assemble a list
of personnel currently in England and
Wales, who have qualifications and/or
experience that would be of use to our
seminarians. If this could be returned to
me by the end of October. I will make a
further approach to the seminaries.
B). New Membership Project. This is in
two parts. Contacting and enrolling new
members and adapting our
constitutions .
The second part, adapting the
constitutions will be looked at in the next
Executive meeting in November. Fr Pat
McGuire SMA is working on the
Constitutions to bring to that meeting.
Richard and myself have been making
contact with possible new membership
groups and we are having slow but
definite success. We intend to continue
this process over the next 12 months
and enable the new groups to elect a
representative to the Executive.
C) Mission Alive. Over the
last two years the
executive has sought to
be involved in promoting
a greater understanding
of mission here in
England and Wales. We
have approached MIssio
to work together to make
October a truly mission
month in the Church
here. A first step has
been made with the launch of MIssion
Alive on Oct 11th. A report on this will be
made during the AGM.
At this point I feel we are on the verge of
something exciting and wonderful and I
must give praise to Richard our Secretary
and all the members of the Executive
who have taken the bit and really gone
with it.

Central point of information
The website at www.cmu.org.uk has been
thoroughly overhauled and now includes
more timely information
and a blog. It is now
attracting between 50
and 70 unique visitors
per day. It is good to
see more people linking
to it from their own websites– please
continue to do that. During the year the
CMU published a feature for Mission
Sunday in the Universe and
had a stand at the cymfed
congress of youth ministers
in March 2011. Publications
such as a ‘mission focus’
newsletter and this Directory
have been produced and
serve to improve the CMU’s profile.
Data and statistics
I can now see that ‘data’ is vital for
operating the office on a number of levels..
A good example is the information from
members—which in 2011 I have at a far
earlier point in the year– meaning it can be
sent to Bishops for their Christmas Cards to
overseas missionaries.
Membership coordination
I have been working with Fr Rob on
increasing the membership of the CMU. It is
a pleasure to welcome the Missionaries of
St Paul and Daughters of Divine Love as
new members. All suggestions for new
members welcome.
It was good to be able to organise the
Annual General Meeting in 2010 in the
friendly environment of Fr Rob’s
community house in Barnet and to bring
the meeting out of the capital to
Birmingham in 2011.
To have Archbishop Bernard Longley
address our AGM is a real vote of
confidence in our membership.
Appeals Rota and strategy for
future of appeals
It is becoming both more
challenging to encourage
parishes to agree to appeals and there are
declining numbers of people to do appeals.
Parish priests have feedback to the bishops
that the number of appeals in the year is
too much . Could there be a central pool of
speakers who are trained up to do appeals
for any of the societies? Are there other
ways of working to ensure that societies
with differing resources can participate?.
Should/could other groups be included on
the appeal rota, minimising the number of
appeal requests to parish priests?
There also seems to be a need for the CMU
to help members to network with one
another over managing UK Border Agency
processes for your personnel. A welcome to
the UK/induction course for overseas
missionaries studying or working here will
be planned. Also a returned missionary
event.

Annual Parish Mission Appeals
Each year the parish mission appeals raise funds for the members of the CMU Mission Committees—which is spent on their vital work overseas and supporting the congregations/missionary development and
promotion at home.
Although 2010 was difficult years in terms of donations (with overall parish appeal income down by over £100,000)– it is important to remember that the annual parish mission appeal is about far more that money. It is the primary opportunity in the Church’s year to hear first hand from a missionary– to hear the empowering message that the Church is alive and growing in all four corners of the globe. It is a especially welcomed opportunity to remind people of their baptismal call to be a missionary and present possibilities of taking
steps in this direction.
It is commonly agreed by all appealers that the appeal is not to be used primarily to secure long term supporters/donors/magazine subscribers—as this makes it difficult for the society which is
appealing in the parish the following year.
Another aspect which CMU members appreciate is the enormous pressure under which parish priests operate– especially the request for appeals from independent charities—which however worthy– are not
officially parts of the programme.
It is a privilege to be able to speak in our parishes and we extend our thanks to the bishops, priests and people of the dioceses
of England &
Wales.
All those who appeal under the CMU appeal rota have been reminded via a note from the Bishops in October 2010 of
the need to:
“ensure a high standard of appeals; these should be based on the liturgy of the day, well delivered and explain the relevance of mission in today’s world.” Equally parishes have been reminded of the straightforward
policy “that the appeal is mandatory”
If you have any queries about the parish mission appeal programme– do not hesitate to contact the Secretariat.
