Thank you for your commitment to providing support to families affected by domestic violence.

2011 marked the largest expansion in our 38-year history with the move to the new Jim & Jan Moran Family Center in Deerfield Beach. Our emergency shelter grew from 62 to 132 beds, giving us the ability to provide safe shelter to more families than ever before, and better meet the needs of our community.

This expansion is the culmination of years of hard work by our dedicated Board of Directors, donors, supporters, volunteers and staff. Why expand? Together we believe that our community deserves and needs more services. The growth of our agency during this time has meant that we have tightened our expenses, looking at every single penny we spend, to ensure we use your generous donations wisely in order to serve more families.

We are proud to honor the legacy and continuing generosity of Jim and Jan Moran in our new campus, as well as the commitment of JM Family Enterprises, Inc. and the Jim Moran Foundation.

In the following pages, you’ll read more about our programs, which are offered free and confidentially to the community. You’ll also read more about how we’re putting your money to work to provide the best services. We would love to hear from you and invite you to contact us by phone at 954-760-9822 or by email at [email protected].

We’re proud of the work we’ve done together over the past year, in partnership with you, to keep families safe.

3 THRIVING: izzy’S story

My name is Izzy*, I’m 15 years old, and I love Thursday nights. That’s the night my mom and I go to counseling. I attend the teen group, and I like that it’s just kids my age. It’s easier to talk about what I’ve been through when the other kids in the room have been through it too.

One of my first memories is at age 6, when I hid under the piano clutching my stuffed animal while my dad pushed my mom around. I used to try to get in the middle and stop my dad from hurting my mom. When he had a bad day at work, we would run away because it was better to be out there than with him at home.

After my parents divorced, my mom and I started going to Women In Distress. It’s been a few years now, and I see a change in both of us. My mom is definitely happier and less stressed, and I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to. I can really be somebody special.

My friends at school look forward to Fridays, and I always get excited with them. But secretly, I love Thursdays best.

“It makes me happy to know that there are good people out there who want to help people like us who need a fresh start.”

5 ABOUT WOMEN IN DISTRESS

Advocacy & CounselingTrained advocates help individuals to develop a personalized safety plan, as well as identify and access community resources. Program participants receive individual counseling, and can choose to attend any of our weekly support groups that take place in six locations around the county. These groups allow participants to share stories of success, survival and courage as they navigate moving from an abusive situation to a safer life.

Children’s ServicesChildren who are affected by domestic violence are often in need of a multitude of services. We provide respite care, parenting classes, children’s groups and individual counseling, in a warm, friendly and safe environment. This allows children to express their emotions freely and begin to heal.

how we keep families safe: programs

therapyIndividual therapy is provided to domestic violence victims who believe they are experiencing emotional or psychological trauma related to domestic violence abuse. With their therapists, participants work to develop an understanding of domestic violence dynamics, and learn to recognize the effect it has on themselves and their families.

Emergency ShelterThe Emergency Shelter program provides families fleeing abusive situations with emergency shelter and critical services such as advocacy, support groups, therapy, food and clothing. With the expansion to our Jim & Jan Moran Family Center campus, we were able to more than double our shelter capacity from 62 to 132 beds.

ABOUT WOMEN IN DISTRESS 6

24-hour crisis hotlineThe first call for help often comes through our crisis line. We provide information on our services, referrals to other social service agencies. Most importantly, an advocate works with the caller to identify a safety plan and the next steps as he or she makes the choice to ask for help.

thrift storeGently-used, in-kind items donated by the community go to our Thrift Store in Margate. Items are sold to the public, and 100% of the net proceeds support our programs. In addition, victims and their families are given vouchers to select what they need from the store to help rebuild their lives and have a new beginning at no cost.

education & preventionWe have embraced an ambitious goal to stop violence before it begins. Our staff hosts presentations for schools, professionals, social service providers, community events and for the general public in an effort to increase awareness about domestic and teen dating violence.

volunteers & internsEach year we rely on undergraduate and graduate interns, as well as hundreds of volunteers to help us provide our services. They assist with many different aspects of agency operations, including answering the crisis line, working our community events, helping in our children’s respite area and so much more. They are essential to helping us meet the needs of our community.

our financial position: investing your dollarsFor 38 years, Women In Distress has been the only full-service

domestic violence center in Broward County. With your support, we’ve been able to provide thousands of hours of counseling, therapy,

nights of shelter and other services to adults and children who are, sometimes, struggling to survive. Our goal is to keep families safe by

being good stewards of your donations, and raise enough funds each year to provide our services confidentially and at no-charge.

The 2011-2012 fiscal year was one of change, and most importantly, of growth. Thanks to you, we accomplished the largest expansion in our history, and can now provide more

programs and services to even more families.

9 FLOURISHING: olga’S story

People often talk about achieving the “American Dream.” I thought I had. I married my husband, who accepted my two beautiful children, and we were happy. I would have done anything to keep us that way. Soon after marrying, we moved to Virginia, where my husband was from and had a home. Though we were far from family and friends, I had high hopes for what our new family would be able to achieve in a new place.

As soon as the airplane touched down, my loving husband became an insulting, aggressive and

controlling stranger. When we arrived at his house, we were immediately made prisoners. I was not allowed to have a key to the house, so that I might come and go as I pleased. My children were not allowed to attend school. We were not allowed to touch anything of his, including food, which he would meticulously inventory.

I found Women In Distress when I came to stay with my sister in South Florida. After almost a year of freedom, Women In Distress has helped me get my children back in school, find an apartment and a job, and get furniture, clothing and more at the Thrift Store. The three of us attend therapy at Women In Distress, and day by day we are growing stronger. Women In Distress has helped to set my family free, so that we don’t have to be captives in our own home anymore.

“ To me, the American Dream no longer

means the picture perfect house with

a white picket fence. It means that my

children and I are happy and safe.”

our response to the community 10

This year it has been vital that, together, we continue to advocate for families who are experiencing emotional, physical, or mental abuse from those that they trust most.

Domestic violence incidents are on the rise in Broward County, as seen in 2011 when total domestic violence offenses increased by 230, from 6,821 to 7,051. The Department of Children and Families estimates that 500 to 600 calls are received, per month, that allege domestic violence involving children in Broward County.

These numbers, and the lethality of domestic violence cases involving children in our community, are not only alarming, but unacceptable.

We responded in the summer of 2011 and opened the doors to the new Jim & Jan Moran Family Center in Deerfield Beach to provide services to more families than ever before.

succeeding: sharon’s story 14

My life isn’t easy, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’m a full-time student with a full-time, night shift job. For the first year of college, I didn’t have a car and took the bus anywhere I needed to go. But I loved every minute of those rides, because my time was my own, and I was happy with the decisions I made.

Before I started college, I was with an emotionally abusive partner who controlled my every move. He would wait for me outside of my job and if I was even a few minutes late, he made the next few hours a nightmare. I came to stay at the Women In Distress shelter, and within a week they helped me find two jobs and an apartment. I worked with an advocate for more than a year to recover from the trauma and fear I endured.

4.0 - that’s my grade point average after two years of college. It can be tough, working a full-time job on a night shift and being a full-time student, but I’m nothing if not strong and determined. The past few years have certainly proved that.

Now, I’m going to school to get my degree in psychology, with the help of scholarships from Women In Distress. With two years left to go, I’m determined to use my degree to help others.

“I’m living my life for me.”-sharon

Mrs. Roselyn Meyer created The Roselyn Meyer Family Foundation in 2001 to ensure that her work in caring for others would live on. Though she passed away in 2009, Mrs. Meyer’s legacy of helping others lives on through the families who have found safety and shelter at Women In Distress. The Teen and Crisis Line Rooms in the new Jim & Jan Moran Family Center are named in Mrs. Meyer’s honor, a fitting tribute to a kind and passionate person who cared deeply about the welfare of women and children.

21 our supporters

Women In Distress is proud to be the recipient of a three-year grant totaling $300,000 from The Jim Moran Foundation. During this third year of the grant awarded in 2010, funding will provide ongoing operational support for Women In Distress’ programs and services, as well as support groups for families affected by domestic violence.

“My husband and I began supporting Women In Distress because we recognized their services were vital and, often times, life-saving for victims of domestic violence,” said Jan Moran, chairman and president, The Jim Moran Foundation. “Today, Women In Distress continues to provide a safe haven

for individuals and families to heal and prepare for brighter, safer futures -- and I know Jim would have wanted his Foundation to help further Women In Distress’ reach into the lives of those who are hurting.”

The Jim Moran Foundation is an invaluable partner in the fight against domestic violence in our community. Through their support, countless families fleeing domestic abuse and at-risk youth in need are provided with critical services as they work toward a violence–free life.

Hal herman children’s fundThe Hal Herman Children’s Fund at Women In Distress was established to help children who live in a domestic violence environment heal and continue to develop. This fund supports the littlest victims of domestic violence receiving services at Women In Distress.

The goal of Donnah’s Fund is to empower domestic violence victims to live safely and independently. It helps them establish safe households for themselves and their children, with support for housing payments and deposits, furnishings, and other related items.
