Annexure A (iv): Eye and Dental Camps at our Schools:

AID India’s Health Team – “Arogyam” along with Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital, St. Thomas Mount conducted Eye Camp in both the schools during October. 280 Kids were benefited by this camp. 12 from Vembakkam and 15 from Koovathur went for advanced screening test and were given aides. During December “Arogyam” along with “Ragas Dental

Institute” conducted Dental camps for the schools. Both the school kids benefited by this camp and kids who

need special attention were taken to Ragas Institute and gave the treatment.

Finding the reason for the Slow Learners: In Eureka School we monitor each child very closely. We have a record of their strength, their weakness areas and the area interest etc. For us each child is very special. We always try to make sure all children attain their age level competency by the end of the year. Though children learn differently and attain skills at different period we make sure each year all children attain all skills. Our teachers conduct special classes for lagging behind children after the school hours as well. In koovathur school we found about 6 children in different classes were having difficulties in attaining the skills. Each one had different problem. One had poor memory, one had problem in understanding etc. We really wanted to know their problems in detail and help them do better. So as a part of this initiative we took them National Institute for Empowerment of Person with Multiple Disabilities, Muttukadu, Chennai. There they had a psychological screening test done at free of cost. We are waiting for the detailed analysis but the doctor said Karthika from 6th std is pre-matured. So it will be difficult for her to cope with other kids. For rest of the kids the doctor suggested different methods of teaching will help the kids acquire the skills.

Ms. Sudeshana, a Volunteer, feed-back on her English Conversation class during weekends at Koovathur

Right from the beginning the children and their English teacher showed a lot of enthusiasm towards the classes, not to mention the hospitality they extended towards us. We were worried that after the initial excitement of seeing new faces their interest would dwindle. Much to our surprise and delight the children remained sincere till the very last day of class. Since this was going to be an English conversation class and not a formal English course, we thought it best to make them promise enough to speak a few lines about themselves and be able to question and answer about several basic information.

In our first class, in an attempt to get familiar with the students, we had played word building games. The vocabulary of some of the students in standard six is noteworthy. After that we had concentrated on various forms of questions and how to answer them correctly.

Since the students have preliminary training in the English language, they had some difficulty in the beginning but towards the end most of the senior students had got a fair grasp on this activity. From what I observed during the few weeks of conversation classes I think such classes are a little advanced for the younger kids and should only be red to students studying in standards five and six.

Since the kids are not often exposed to, and hence cannot naturally pick up, English they must have a basic understanding of the language before they can hold conversations. Nonetheless, it should be mentioned that the school has successfully provided the children with an overall educative environment. I was highly impressed by the teacher-student relationship in this school. Once I even believed that a student was the Math teacher's own daughter! Also, a major advantage is that the students are not shy and reticent.

In spite of my complete inability to speak in Tamil, I had a one hour long conversation with a class 3 students, who was able to explain everything to me with her broken English and hand gestures! Towards the end we started taking English classes for the teachers of Eureka and nearby schools. We will be continuing these classes for some time.

Even one day's class has brought forward the fact that the teachers at the Eureka school are far better than the rest. That may be due to experience or otherwise. However, all the teachers need a lot more grooming if the ultimate aim is to make the students adept at English. We have to chalk out the classes for the teachers even more carefully and we have also thought about sending worksheets for the students through the teachers.

It is very inspiring to come across such a well-coordinated school in the middle of nowhere. But I think the assessment procedure should be a little stricter. There are a few students who should be more comfortable in lower classes, and a few teachers who are not yet ready to teach.
