Concern India Foundation started 22 years ago with extending support to an initiative for special care for the differently abled. For a strong and stable society, it is important to nourish equally its basic foundation of education, health and community development. By extending our support through these issues we reach out to the most vulnerable section of our society and encompass the lives of children, youth, women, the specially challenged and the aged.

We believe that we can reach out and make a difference to an underprivileged person at any point during the course of his/her life cycle. Thus we complete the circle of life when our actions change someone’s life.

The ripple effect is what can make an extended change to society. When you change the life of a woman, you change the life of a family; when you give a man employment, you change the perspectives of the entire home; when you educate a child, you change a generation. You too can join us in our effort.

A few of the unique programmes we support are:

Bridging the Gap for Tribal CommunitiesMumbai: On the periphery of Mumbai lies the Borivali National Park that is still home to a marginalised tribal population. With deforestation and concretisation, these tribals are slowly losing their means of survival, face being uprooted and worry about their children’s future.

Concern India Foundation supports a grass root programme that works towards bridging the gap for the tribals through education, awareness generation, providing health facilities and facilitating the information fl ow between the tribals and various government and non-government institutions.

The programme runs 8 education centres in the area, including balwadis for primary children and coaching classes for school-going students. The programme staff set up a village education committee and invests in teachers’ training as well. Thus Concern India Foundation has helped bring about a positive change in the lives of over 450 children.

Shilpa lived with her parents in the tribal village. Her parents were forced to move to a nearby farmhouse and work as helpers to make a living. Sadly, she had to drop out of school to help her parents with the farm work. When a teacher noticed that Shilpa had stopped coming to school, she informed the village education committee, who convinced her parents to let her return to the village school, stay with her grandmother and resume her studies.

Tackling Visual ImpairmentNew Delhi: In India, cataract is a leading cause of blindness among the elderly. Despite medical advances in this fi eld,

many succumb to blindness due to inaccessible or expensive medical facilities. For the past 5 years, Concern India Foundation has supported a grass root programme that provides quality eye care to many disadvantaged elderly.

The programme has 8 outreach centres across Haryana and each centre is located within the community. The space for the centre is provided by the community to ensure community acceptance and participation.

A team of ophthalmologists and opticians visit each centre on a weekly basis to carry out eye check-ups. Cataract patients are operated upon and those in need of spectacles are fi tted with them.

66-year-old Rashidan lives in the tiny village of Nuh, Haryana. She had been complaining of loss of vision for the past 8 years. When a check up was done at the outreach centre close by, leucoma was detected in her right eye. Her eye was operated on at the main hospital in Gurgaon. Rashidan now has perfect vision.

Since 2007, the programme has conducted 1445 cataract operations. We have recently provided them with a refraction van to enable the team to travel to the rural interiors to conduct refractive error check ups and provide spectacles.

Empowering Women through Education Bengaluru: When you educate children and empower women, the entire community benefi ts. This is the ethos of a Concern India Foundation supported programme in Bengaluru. The programme has created a positive change in the lives of 5,750 people so far.

PROGRAMME Glimpses

A childcare unit located within the slum area prepares younger children for formal schooling and tuition classes provide additional support for older children. An effort is also made to identify and encourage the school dropouts to resume school. The programme also runs certifi ed training courses in teaching, computer skills, health and hygiene for young women in an effort to enable them to fi nd an occupation.

Yellamma, who stayed in the basti, was an introvert and was wary of going out. The programme staff cajoled her to join their offi ce management course. Having studied in Kannada medium, she was not confi dent while conversing in English. The programme provided additional support by putting her through a life skills and spoken English course.

Yellamma completed her course successfully and got a job as a receptionist in a company and was soon promoted to the billing counter. Yellama now supplements the family kitty and is happy with the new life she has found.

Building Aspiration LevelsChennai: An interesting Concern India Foundation supported programme works in villages on the outskirts of Chennai and the slum areas of the city. They conduct non-formal classes for rag pickers and their children. Additionally, as a means to empower rural women, the programme trains women to become health workers for their communities.

The support given by Concern India Foundation has helped the programme conduct trainings and also pay a basic remuneration to the staff, enabling them to continue their work in the fi eld. They have also been able to conduct motivational workshops for children on sanitation and health, and instil a level of confi dence in youth that motivates them to pursue higher education.

Meenakshi was working as a rag picker to support her family. After attending regular meetings at the programme centre in the slum, she was motivated to improve in personal hygiene, which in turn helped her self-esteem too.

Within months, Meenakshi got a job as a part-time housemaid. Through these meetings, she also heard about a free tuition programme that was run in the slums and enrolled her children there so they would have a chance to pursue their dreams.

Special Care for the Specially ChallengedHyderabad: Children with special challenges defi nitely require special training, even for day-to-day basics that we often take for granted. Concern India Foundation has always lent its support to programmes that work with the differently-abled.

One such programme in Hyderabad provides a residential cum day school facility for mentally challenged children

between the ages of 3-18 years. The programme focuses on helping the children develop motor skills and social skills; and gives them basic training in reading, writing and mathematics. In addition, yoga, music therapy and meditation further enhance their learning experience. The curriculum also includes vocational training and currently imparts training in candle making, dough making and greeting card making.

15-year-old Mona suffers from Down’s Syndrome. Mona loves dancing and is always smiling. Her father abandoned the family when Mona and her 3 brothers were very young. Having to now support the entire family, Mona’s mother found it increasingly diffi cult to cope with Mona’s condition. When she heard about the programme, she enrolled Mona. At that time, she had absolutely no academic skill or hygiene training. She still wet her bed at night and had very little clarity of speech. With training, Mona has learned to brush her teeth and indicate her toilet needs. She now has greater control over her motor skills, can write her name and the numbers 1-10. A great dancer, Mona now loves performing for an audience.

The Benefi ts of Early InterventionKolkata: Concern India Foundation identifi ed a programme for intellectually challenged children in Kolkata. The programme began with providing parent-to-parent counselling, referral services, organized seminars and workshops. Gradually, special education and life skills workshops were also initiated.

Recently, due to a growing infl ow of children with multiple disability and autism, the programme realised that early intervention through multi-sensory stimulation was essential to aid child development.

With support from Concern India Foundation a special multi-sensory unit was launched to support 35 students with varying degrees of sensory neural defi cit. Trained professionals were engaged to help the children develop language and social skills. Parents were also taught to understand and meet their child’s specifi c needs.

Born in a low socio economic family, Sreya seemed to be constantly suffering from different ailments since she was born. All her development milestones were delayed and her parents struggled to help her to grow. When she was about 2 years old, they heard about this programme and brought her in.

Initially, Sreya could not sit without proper support and would speak only in sounds to draw attention. With multisensory stimulation and other therapies, gradually Sreya started responding and can now stand and walk on her own. Her speech has developed and her mother no longer has to feed or bathe her, as Sreya manages to do both the activities slowly, but effi ciently.

INTER NGO TALENT HUNTThis year, our Pune team initiated the Inter NGO Talent Hunt

in their city. 11 NGOs with 280 children participated in a sing

and dance competition for underprivileged children between

the age group of 8 and 16 years. The event proved to be a

great success as guests, sponsors, participating NGOs and

the children enjoyed the fun-filled day. The Sanjay Kakade

Group generously stepped forward to support the event.

POLLUTION AWARENESS CAMPAIGNOn 5th May 2011, Concern India Foundation’s Delhi team

undertook an awareness campaign on the issue of ‘Pollution’

to commemorate World Environment Day. For a month, posters

and car stickers were put up in popular market areas and the

office complexes of sponsors across the city. The Delhi Noida

Direct Toll agency distributed approximately 5000 stickers to

raise awareness about the negative impact of pollution. The

event was supported SAIL, BHEL and AVI Oil India Ltd.

ROSHNI - a music talent contestA music talent contest for the visually challenged – Roshni - was

held on September 17th 2011 in Hyderabad. 25 children from

two government schools showcased their singing and musical

talents trough individual and group performances. Eminent

playback singers - Geeta Madhuri and Abhiram — judged the

contest and later encouraged the participants. Chemi Labs,

Sunrise International, State Bank of India and Indian Overseas

Bank supported the event.

INTER NGO SPORTS MEETThis year too, the Inter NGO Sports Meet was conducted in

NEW Partnerships

Concern India Foundation partnered with Cadence for

the 12th Annual Corporate Citizenship Challenge for the

Cause of Children (5Cs). 5Cs is a multi-sport event, where

each year corporate teams participate in different sporting

challenges, all the while raising funds for a chosen cause.

This year, 12 teams participated in Bangalore and 15 in

Delhi in sporting challenges that included cricket, table

tennis, throw ball, basketball, badminton, mini marathon

and football. A one-day event in each city, 5Cs brought

together corporates with diverse backgrounds and skills to

participate towards a common cause - the education of the

underprivileged children.

Ace Techonologies, Actron, ARM, Assotech Realty Pvt.

Ltd., Brocade, CADD, Cornell Overseas Pvt. Ltd., E Med

Life, Genesis Global School, Hilton, ICICI Bank Ltd., Idea,

IRIS, MINT, Net App, Orange, Park Plaza, Riello PCI, Pixel

Communications, Polaris, QA Infotech, Royal Tours &

Travels, SM Engineers, Tyco & Wipro sponsored the event.

‘Go Forward’ was an event that identified football talent

among underprivileged children. A Standard Chartered

Bank event, Concern India Foundation played the role of

identifying BMC schools that would participate in the event

as well as bring in volunteers to manage the event.

Approximately 2000 children attended the two-day selection

process in batches of 500. Eight coaches shortlisted 650

children from whom 32 children were selected for extensive

training by Indian football coaches.

Thanks to Standard Chartered Bank’s tie up with the

Liverpool Football Club, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson

arrived to kick off the event. Over the next six months, 40

selected children received concentrated training and a Go

Forward team was formed who were further trained by

Arshad Hussain, Aqueel Ansari and Swamy Nagesh.

In April 2012, the Go Forward team played against several

prominent school football teams including some from Ivy

League category.
