A Message from the Chairman of the Board:

It has been a fantastic year in the history of Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana. The organization continues to be strong in its determination to teach children the three pillars of JA: Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, and Work Readiness. This year, JA has utilized over 800 volunteers to reach over 22,000 students in the 13 county service area- at a growth rate of 19% over the past year.

The only way Junior Achievement could grow the service to such a great extent is because of the success of the Adopt-A-School Program, where businesses fund JA curriculum for a class, a few classes, or a whole school. Going forward, Junior Achievement is seeing even more demand on the horizon from the principals, superintendents, and teachers in the region. Therefore, the Adopt-A-School Program will continue to be critically important to the overall success of JA.

As the Chairman of the Board (2010-2011), and participating Board Member, I encourage you and your business to become active partners with Junior Achievement, and further encourage you to consider the organization’s Adopt-A-School Program. It will not only make a difference in the lives of school children in the community, it will make a difference in your employees lives because they recognize that they are active members of the community and a part of something greater than themselves- teaching and inspiring future leaders of tomorrow. This small investment will pay tremendous dividends.

It has been a true honor to serve as Chairman of the Board for Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana during the 2010-2011 fiscal and school year. Thank you for allowing me the pleasure to witness the dedication of the volunteers and staff of JA first hand. They are truly the reason the mission of JA is being fulfilled, so completely, in Southwestern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois.

A Message from the President of JA:

Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana has experienced a successful 2010-2011 fiscal and school year. Thanks to the support, dedication and commitment of the volunteers, board members, committee members, staff, foundations, and community organizations and businesses, Junior Achievement was able to serve over 22,000 students in the 13 county service area.

Junior Achievement had a series of events, including the Evansville’s Business Hall of Fame, Grand Prix, the Free Enterprise Invitational and the Golf Raffle, that raised over $190,000. The funds raised will be used to provide financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship programs in the 13 county service area! JA also had a successful year in procuring grants and contributions throughout the service area. Thanks to the generous support of community foundations, businesses, and organizations, grant and contribution revenue was increased by 14% during the 2010-2011 school year. It is the goal of the organization to continue to increase grant and contribution revenue in order to support more community schools and students as demand for JA programs continues to increase. JA is truly grateful for all of the support and dedication the community and volunteers give to the organization. JA grew significantly this year, reaching more students than ever. JA programs were in great demand during 2010-2011school year. With the support of the community and volunteers, JA was able to meet the demand in a tough economic climate.

Thank you for all of your support, help and dedication to Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana. The past year has truly been a tremendous success. However, it is still more important than ever to continue teaching and investing in the youth of our communities, thereby helping students own their economic success. Thank you again for supporting Junior Achievement. ~ Theo Boots, President

Over 800 Volunteers dedicated time to

Junior Achievement in 2010 - 2011

Without the support of community leaders and volunteers, JA would not be successful. Junior Achievement believes that the volunteer is 50% of the curriculum and 100% of the success of the programs.

The JA volunteers provide the critical piece of the program: the experience and insight into the global marketplace. Through community leaders, students are given the tools to thrive in the global economy. It is the time and talents that community leaders share with students that is truly the greatest investment.

Volunteers contribute to Junior Achievement’s goal of educating students to become financially literate citizens in the global economy. Community volunteers present programs that successfully and positively impact the economic environment, the youth of the community and the education system; inspiring future leaders of tomorrow.

Volunteering The Essential Element of JA

"We tend to forget as adults that our school curriculum does not often allow the teachers to focus on financial and business aspects. We stress the importance of an education but often forget that we must be lifelong learners and work together as a team if we are to make improvements in our community/region. I have been fortunate enough to teach two JA classes and I can report that at fifty-eight; I have learned concepts that I had previously thought unimportant to a retired teacher.

Whether working or retired, we still must be involved with our youth. Their enthusiasm, energy and eagerness to explore new activities give the JA instructors a chance to plant seeds of knowledge. They are our future and I want them to be well-informed and aware of what it will take to be successful. Good luck JA and continue your great work!"

lerating Greatness

Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana is one of the tri-state’s great success stories. The organization completed its 47th year of service to Southwestern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois counties during the 2010-2011 year.

Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana served over 22,000 students in the 13 county service area. JA programs provide students with the knowledge and tools, to make more informed decisions and develop problem-solving skills that lead to a brighter future. JA teaches students through financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs, how to own their economic success. The experience through participation in JA provides a foundation for life-long success. JA programs illustrate ways to build self-confidence, develop skills, and discover the free-enterprise system through interactive activities and positive role models-community volunteers- as their teachers. JA seeks to inspire future leaders of tomorrow.

Due to the fact that JA has more than 800 volunteers throughout Southwestern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois, the organization was able to increase high school students served by 29% and had an overall student growth of 19%! Because of this incredible opportunity to provide programs to so many students in the service area, Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana served over 25% of the market. JA also increased overall grant and contribution giving by 14%, allowing the organization to serve more students than ever with JA programs in the service area.

Junior Achievement truly had a successful 2010-2011 year, and it is because of the dedication, time and talents of the community leaders, the JA Board of Directors and Staff, and YOU!

“The economic events of the past several years have left a meaningful impression on the students we serve. They hear about the global and national recession on the news and they see the stress on their parents’ faces as their families deal with difficult financial situations. These young people express a sincere desire to understand what they can do in their personal lives to become masters of their financial futures. Junior Achievement offers us the opportunity to have one of the most meaningful impacts on a young person; one that starts them on a path to financial freedom through financial literacy and education.”

Daviess County has continued to grow and add Junior Achievement programs to the county. JA served 565 students in 24 classes this past year. The Daviess County Community, with the help of Jeff Norris of Norris Law Firm, continues to support and assist JA; securing funding and teaching classes. JA also created an advisory council where community leaders will assist JA in its efforts to expand and maintain JA programs during the 2011-2012 school year. Currently, JA serves 13% of the students in Daviess County.

Jasper’s Advisory Council is one of the longest and most established JA councils. Dubois County is home to the JA Company Program, running two programs a year. JA programs are implemented in all three school districts, reaching over 3,240 students in 140 classes. Dubois County is one of Junior Achievement’s oldest established counties. Today, JA serves over 39% of the students in the county.

Gibson County has one of JA’s largest student penetration rates, reaching 39% of the students in the county. JA provided 103 programs to students throughout the county, serving over 2,027 students.JA programs are taught at all three school districts in Gibson County; serving every 9th grader in the county. Gibson County also has an impressive Advisory Council, developing strategies and goals for the county to better serve the schools and students in Gibson County with JA programs.

Knox County continues to grow and include JA programs in the schools. With the continued help and support of Joel Smith and Becky Boberg of German American Bank, JA has implemented 38 classes during the 2010-2011 school years, and has served more than 848 students, growing programs extensively in 2010-2011 and serving 9% of the students. JA is serving all three school districts in Knox County, and is prepared to continue expanding programs in 2011-2012. JA also established an Advisory Council in Knox County to better serve the needs of the schools and county.

Pike County provided over 713 students in more than 38 classes with JA programs during the 2010-2011 school year, serving more than 32% of the students. Both Junior Achievement and the Pike County Advisory Council continue to have tremendous support from Mayor Jon Craig, who continues to serve as the Chairman of the Advisory Council, as well as serve as a member of the JA Board. Pike has had continued success with the JA programs, largely due to the fact that Shari Hays continues to work with JA staff as a lead coordinator between schools and volunteers. Pike County has grown significantly and will continue to be successful in 2011-2012, due to the support of the community and local government.

Posey County continues to provide JA programs with plans to expand in the coming school year. With a supportive community, outstanding volunteers, a strong partnership with SABIC, and a motivated and committed Advisory Council, Posey County served more than 1,160 students in 60 classes during the 2010-2011 school year. 28% of the students in Posey County are currently served JA programs, with plans to grow during the 2011-2012 school year. Currently, JA provides programs to all three districts, including “whole schools” at New Harmony School, Marrs Elementary, West Elementary, and St. Matthews Catholic School.

Spencer County implemented JA programs three years ago, beginning with four classes. During the 2010-2011 school year, Spencer County has grown to serve more than 594 students in 28 classes, at 10 schools. With rapid and successful growth, the Advisory Council has dedicated time and talents to ensure that Spencer County JA programs are implemented and that the county has a strategy to continue the successful implementation and expansion. Currently, in Spencer County JA serves 17% of the students, in both districts with JA curriculum. JA, in partnership with the Advisory Council, continues to work with the schools and community to secure more classes for the future.

Page 13: Annual Report 2011

Vanderburgh County saw great demand for programs during the 2010-2011 school year. Working closely with EVSC, JA provided a record number of JA Personal Finance classes. During the 2010-2011 school year, Vanderburgh County received more JA programs than ever, serving over 10,000 students. JA continues to reach students in Vanderburgh County that have never received a JA program before. JA also works with the Programs Committee to ensure that JA programs are maintained and expanded in Vanderburgh County. Junior Achievement also partnered with SICAN during the spring of 2011, creating a College and Career Fair. JA provided curriculum for the fair, reaching over 2,000 students at the event in March of 2011. JA programs are expected to continue to expand during the 2011-2012 school year.

Warrick County has had a steady increase of JA programs throughout the county. With the continued growth of new businesses and residents, there has been a great demand for JA programs in the schools. Junior Achievement established a partnership with ALCOA, receiving funds to expand and maintain programs throughout Warrick County. JA has worked closely with the Warrick County community and business leaders to establish an Advisory Council to better serve the needs of the community and schools. Because of the tremendous efforts of the Council, community and JA, programs were implemented into 80 classes, serving more than 1,866 or 19% of the students in the county. JA has been well received in Warrick County, and will continue to grow programs during the 2011-2012 school year.

For more than a decade, Junior Achievement has provided the schools in Wayne County with JA programs. Wayne County has successfully maintained an average of 30 classes a year, serving over 500 students the unparalleled curriculum of Junior Achievement. Approximately 19% of the students in Wayne County were provided with JA programs during the 2010-2011 school year. Wayne County has wonderful community support; Richard Montgomery of Richard I. Montgomery, PC finds community leaders to teach the programs in Wayne County.

In Edwards County, the 2010-2011 school year marked the third year that JA programs were provided to Edwards County schools and students. 22 classes were completed, with over 400 students served JA programs, serving more than 37% of the students in the county. Julie Hill, of Champion Laboratories, served as a lead coordinator for JA , finding volunteers for Edwards County during the 2009-2010 school year and the 2010-2011 school year. Wayne and Edwards Counties have a united Advisory Council, made up of community leaders from Wayne County and Edwards County. The unified council allows for more sustainable growth and better community involvement.

“I learned so much from Junior Achievement and it is because of the business leaders that teach the classes.

Because they take the time to volunteer to teach students about business, I have a better understanding of economics, business and money management. I am

truly thankful for all the JA volunteers, and for inspiring me to be a great leader one day.”

~ Rebecca Seyler, 8th grade student at Holy Spirit,2011 Business Hall of Fame Student Speaker

Junior Achievement’s success is contingent uponcommunity support from local businesses and organizations, as well as,dedicated volunteers to teach JA programs to area students.

Junior Achievement is truly appreciative of the community businesses and organizations that have supported and continue to support the organization, raising more than $190,000 at the 2010-2011 events benefitting JA programs.
