EXECUTIVE MESSAGE

The results are in. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, one in five San Franciscans is of Chinese descent, and not only is this population the largest minority group in the city, it’s also the fastest growing. For nearly 150 years, Cameron House has met the needs of Chinese immigrants and their families, serving as the middle ground between two very different worlds. To keep up with the unique needs of this growing population, we’re making every effort to maintain and expand services for our clients, many of whom have limited knowledge of the English language or American customs. In particular, we’re focusing our efforts on adding programs in Cantonese and Mandarin, so that clients struggling with intense, personal issues such as family conflicts, domestic violence, or recovery from cancer can receive vital services in their own language, within a familiar cultural context. This makes Cameron House the preferred provider for thousands of residents all over the city, who know they can count on Cameron

House staff to meet their needs with sensitivity and kindness. As you page through this Annual Report, you’ll find details of how we make life better for many families and individuals in transition. In the Youth Programs section, you’ll learn how our after-school programs help disaffected youth become model students. In the Social Services section, you’ll hear firsthand about the lasting impact of our parenting workshops on families facing the difficulties of adjusting to life in the U.S. Last, but certainly not least, in the Financials section, you’ll see that Cameron House continues to offer great value for every dollar donated. Needless to say, the support of our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and friends is what truly makes Cameron House a safe, welcoming place where people of all ages can receive help, gain skills, find friends and fellowship, and participate in service to God and others.

We’re grateful to all of you.

YOUTH SERVICES

Capping off an exciting and highly productive 2011, Cameron House’s Youth Ministries staged its first-ever Visual Performing Arts Festival, a showcase of talent from Cameron House youth and alumni. The children (and grown-ups) spent months developing their ideas and turning them into original movies, music videos, and choreographed song-and-dance routines. Several Saturdays of photography and video editing workshops—led and coordinated by one of our Friday Night Club Leader volunteers—helped to get the youth ready for their performances. Off-stage, we focused our efforts

138 years and still going

on enhancing our Bilingual After-School Program (BAP), and as the numbers of students in BAP continued to grow, Cameron House responded with the addition of two full-time youth directors who helped deepen curricula and enrich the experience for our youth. Parent engagement evenings—held twice each school year—brought over 50 BAP parents to Cameron House, where they received information about the school system and an overview of their child’s progress. Notably, Cameron House continued its incredible 60-year legacy of developing young leaders through the participation and training of nearly 100 high school students throughout the year in Friday Club and Summer Service programs. The lasting effects of learning to become a leader of younger children—as well as the long-term friendships students develop with their peers—help define the transformational experience that sets Cameron House’s Youth Programs apart.

1893 – Moved to 920 Sacramento, which housed 50 girls.

1906 – Great Earthquake hit. 920 Sacramento was rebuilt following the earthquake.

1915 – Tooker Memorial Home was founded. This is an extension of Cameron House and focused on babies and infants.

Page 6: Annual Report 2011

1922 – Chung Mei Home for Boys was founded and catered to young boys. Donaldina convinced Dr. Charles Shepherd to start this home.

1923 – Cameron House shifted from being run by Presbyterian women and was eventually turned over to the domain of the Board of National Missions.

1923 – Ming Quong Home was started to focus on helping girls. It began in Oakland and then moved to Los Gatos. This closed in the 50s as orphanages started.

Growing up in San Francisco’s Chinatown, En Fa faced many of the same challenges Chinese immigrant youth have faced for generations. His family was living in an SRO (Single-Room Occupancy apartment with community restrooms and cooking facilities) on Broadway Street, just a short walking distance from Cameron House.

Sing Quan, a Cameron House staff member who was En Fa’s leader for the past eight years, describes him as very challenging and explains that “we worked with him for a long time. En Fa had no place to go. Cameron House was his home away from his SRO house. We never gave up on En Fa and now, he is giving back.”

WHO WE ARE

En Fa

1933 - 1958 – Mei Lun Yuen Group Home was started to take in younger Asian children (orphanages started in the 50s).

1938 – There was a major court case during this time and 4 slave owners were deported back to China as the slave trade was no longer tolerated. There were fewer women needing rescue, so at this time there were only 7 women living on site. The program then moved to 144 Wetmore.

In the eight years of growing up under the care of many leaders, mentors, and adult volunteers at Cameron House, En Fa evolved from an angry, temperamental youngster to a volunteer leader, a kitchen medicine apprentice, and a standout basketball player on the Cameron House Asian Basketball league. En Fa is now a 10th grade student at Wallenberg High School and continues to reside with his grandmother in the same SRO on Broadway Street. En Fa’s father recently reported that he’s now a straight-A student.

SOCIAL SERVICES

As government budgets shrink and immigrant populations expand, our Social Services programs have become even more vital to the city of San Francisco. Our array of services is part of a broad-based effort to educate and support our clients, to equip them—along with their families—to become resourceful and self-sufficient, and ultimately to empower them to serve their own communities. For many clients, Cameron House provides a primary point of contact and helps them locate and navigate resources available in the area. Without this vital assistance, newcomers with very limited English skills wouldn’t be aware of opportunities to help them adapt to their new communities and create a sustainable quality of life. This linguistic capacity is a crucial part of the safety

net for many immigrant women, children, and families, who benefit from multilingual programs such as our cancer support groups, ESL classes, and domestic violence services. Moving forward, we’re endeavoring to maintain our current level of service in the face of disappearing grants that once provided significant funding for these programs. This challenges us to develop new revenues to hire additional multilingual counselors to meet the city’s ever-growing demand for multilingual social services.
