Welcome to our Annual Report on the year 2012 to 2013. It has been avery eventful year with the road show at LACE demonstrating the work ofCatholic agencies and our partners, and the launch of the handbook forPriests drawn up with the assistance of a student from Interchange.

Our very successful Social Work Service for Schools was started, andSister Benedicte won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Liverpool Nightof Honour. Our Deaf Arts and Crafts Group started off on their beautifulmosaic and we dedicated money to start planning a group for people withvision difficulties. Work began on planning our Dignity and Dementia CareAwareness Campaigns and an award night for April 2013. Our longstanding relationship with Unison resulted in a recognition agreement inFebruary 2013.

I hope you have been able to keep up with these events, and manyothers, in our newsletters over the year.

We were very sorry that Archbishop Patrick Kelly became unwell inDecember 2012 and subsequently retired in January. The Archbishop hasbeen, and continues to be, a true friend and support to Nugent Care andwe are very grateful for all of his time and commitment over the years.I am sure you will all join me in wishing him a long, happy and healthyretirement.

I will take this opportunity to thank all of our staff, volunteers andsupporters for all that has been achieved this year and I look forward tothe coming year as we continue to offer excellent services in an everchanging and challenging financial climate.

This is the first time for many years that this message has not been writtenby the Archbishop Patrick Kelly. I took over as Chair when he had to retiredue to ill health in February 2013. We at Nugent Care owe him a greatdebt of gratitude for his support, wisdom and guidance.

Last year he reflected that one of Nugent Care’s roles was to be a voice tothe voiceless especially those who suffer the most. A year on this task iseven more demanding, for many people everyday life has become muchharder as the spending cuts, benefit changes and other public policiestake effect. We hear voices of disillusion, of impatience and desperation.Churches, faith based agencies such as Nugent Care and othercommunity organisations are coming together to respond to need and to

work towards the common good. At times, to ask people to be bold, totake risks and to stand with them. Our ‘Dignity in Care’ campaign is anexample of such advocacy. Research continues on the impact ofhomelessness.

Alongside this we continue to operate and develop services for childrenand adults.

This report details the work that is going on and I commend it to you, atthe same time offering thanks to all those who support Nugent Care in somany different ways.

We have for many years been at the forefront of personalised, outcome focusedsupport for volunteers, community groups, Deaf people, people who are hard ofhearing and people who have learning disabilities. These services run alongsidesupport for homeless people and people in need of welfare advice or material aid.

All of the community service project teams are pivotal to Nugent Care’s responsein meeting the challenges of people experiencing reduced life opportunities, andimproving health and well-being of the service users. Some of these services arenon-statutory funded and we work closely with our Fundraising Team to engagewith the local public and business community to provide much needed funds andraise the profile of social issues in our local area.

Nugent Care’s Housing Support Unit (HSU) offers a unique and variedcombination of services aimed at meeting the needs of marginalised anddisadvantaged people. The HSU Team is made up of Nugent Care staff andvolunteers. Volunteers are recruited from the community and they donate theirtime to help us to provide material aid to people in need.

We also provide general housing advice, support to homeless people and workwith other professional agencies to meet the varied and complex needs of arange of vulnerable people.

Government and local authority funding supports the operating costs of our carehomes and schools but the donations from our supporters and friends have createdthe opportunity, that allows us at Nugent Care, to work towards our vision andmission of providing the best possible care and support to those in need.

Our thanks go to Phil Thompson the Patron of Nugent Care who has been busypromoting the work of the charity via his annual golf tournament and speaking atbusiness dinners and schools.

The business community in Liverpool continues to support us and members of AlphaBNI have succeeded in raising much needed funds for the community teams.

Sir Terry Leahy, former CEO of Tesco, continues to support the Hear Here projectwith donations from his foundation. This donation enables us to offer new services toolder people who have become isolated due to hearing loss.

We are grateful to all schools, parishes, teachers and parents for their continuedsupport and creativity with the annual Good Shepherd Appeal, now in its 110th year!

All of us at Nugent Care really appreciate the support of our donors and friends. Wecannot express how much we appreciate their kindness. Each and every donation,no matter how large or small, enables us to improve the lives of those we serve.

A legacy for Nugent Care

How can you help us?

Increasingly, people are leaving gifts to help others less fortunate than

themselves and one of the most tax efficient ways of giving is by leaving a legacy.

There are several different types of legacy. Your solicitor can help you choose one

according to your personal circumstance. Legacies left to charitable organisations

will be free of inheritance tax.

Residuary Bequest Is a gift of the remainder of the estate after all other

responsibilities have been met.

Pecuniary Bequest Is a gift of a specified amount of money or

monies-worth (i.e. shares) left to Nugent Care.

Specific Bequest Is a gift of a particular item for example a house, a

piece of jewellery or an antique.

Contingent Bequest Is a gift that depends on the occurrence of an event,

which may or may not happen. An example is; a

bequest to a charity which applies only if other

beneficiaries named in the Will die before the person

who made the Will.

In memory donations You may like to specify that if anyone makes a

donation in your memory, it should be to Nugent

Care. We can send you a special form requesting

this which you can then keep with your Will.

No gift is too small.

If you would like to help secure the future of Nugent Care by bequeathing a legacy in

your Will please contact:-
