Dr. Mitchell: It is such an exciting time to be part of the StarVista family. Thanks to the support of friends like you, we continue to help create new possibilities for the over 35,000 children, youth and families we serve each year, as they overcome challenges, achieve goals, and work to reach their full potential.

The achievements of the last year would not have been possible without the remarkable support and personal commitment of our Board, sta, donors, community partners, and volunteers. As CEO, it is an extraordinary privilege to have the opportunity to work with all of you and see the results of our combined eorts. Our collaboration has resulted in a unique and eective organization rooted rmly in service to the most vulnerable among us.

We celebrate our shared results. As we look to the future, we look forward to continuing to work with you to strengthen our communities. There is so much more we can do.

Ms. Martin: As StarVista’s Board Chair, I would like to thank you, on behalf of the entire Board, for all you do to contribute to this dynamic organization. You may be a donor, sta, volunteer, advisor or one of our countless community partners. Whatever your role, you are contributing to the many successes we have with children, youth and adults of San Mateo County.

StarVista’s commitment to empowering individuals to overcome challenges in reaching their potential is documented beautifully in this Annual Report. The myriad of StarVista programs promotes the health and well-being of our neighbors, provides countless opportunities and supports those in need. Together, we can continue to strengthen our community.

I want to thank Dr. Sara Larios Mitchell for her passion and leadership as Chief Executive Ocer. We look forward to another productive and successful year.

Annual Report 2012 - 2013

Healthy Homes: A Mother and Daughter’s JourneySarah* thought the worst was behind her. A domestic violence survivor, Sarah was nally able to leave her abusive partner, but she struggled to deal with the emotional scars left behind. She was suering from classic symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder: anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. It wasn’t until

she began to notice a disturbing change in behavior of her once cheerful, three year-old daughter that Sarah realized she needed to seek help.

StarVista’s Healthy Homes program was there for her. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, Sarah and her daughter were able to receive the assistance they needed.

Healthy Homes oers therapy and support for children ages 0 to 5 and their primary caregiver who have been exposed to family violence. Research shows that children exposed to the trauma of domestic violence and its aftermath are more likely than other children to exhibit aggressive and antisocial behavior; be depressed and anxious; have learning diculties; and are more likely to engage in or become victims of domestic violence as adults.

Healthy Homes aims to build the capabilities of parents and caregivers to ultimately provide a loving, supportive environment in which children can thrive. Through Healthy Homes, Sarah learned skills for dealing with her anxiety and trauma. She and her daughter also began attending joint therapy sessions to help with her daughter’s emotional outbursts and anxious behaviors.

Today, Sarah is the mother she knew she could be, as she continues to use the coping skills she learned at Healthy Homes. And because of the foundation of trust and love Healthy Homes helped them build, Sarah’s daughter has been given a chance to grow up in a nurturing environment that will diminish the likelihood that she become a victim or perpetrator of domestic abuse herself some day.

“You will never know how much StarVista has helped me,” Sarah reects. “I feel like I died and came back to life. I am a new person today.” Thanks to your support, StarVista will continue to help families like Sarah’s nd a better path, and ultimately build a healthier community for all of us.

StarVista’s programs help children, young people, adults, and families across San Mateo County write their own success stories.

Counseling Programs Through individual, family and group counseling, StarVista helps people to identify and work through personal issues that get in the way of healthy growth and development. We also oer special programs for clients who are dealing with trauma or multiple mental health and substance abuse issues.

Prevention We help children of alcoholics learn about and break the cycle of addiction, and give people of all ages the knowledge, skills and resources they need to avoid risky behaviors and provide a safe and stable living situation for their families.

Early Intervention Early Childhood Services help parents provide a nurturing home, and address psychological issues in very young children so they can succeed in school. Other StarVista programs recognize that a first-time criminal oense may be the sign of a family problem or the result of lack of knowledge. We help first oenders learn about the causes and consequences of their actions, to give them a second chance.

Education Our education programs teach parents, teachers, law enforcement and other community members about available resources and methods of encouraging healthy behaviors.

Residential Programs These programs provide a temporary home for young people who are unable to live with their families due to family crisis, alcohol and/or drug use, domestic violence, or homelessness. For children in foster care and young people who cannot return to their homes, StarVista oers several programs that teach independent living skills and provide housing assistance.
