Main Activities from 2013-2014:
It was another remarkable year for Subh-e-Nau. The thematic areas including Health,
Environment, Disability and Rehabilitation, Advocacy and Sports are being expanded with the
passage of time. Disability and Rehabilitation program saw an increased level of acceptance in
the society. Subh-e-Nau utilized its human and financial resources in a best possible to carryout
following activities during the year:
Environment and Tree Plantation Campaigns:
The forest cover continuous to fall in Pakistan. The incessant deforestation has resulted in many
environmental and health problems across Pakistan. Our forest cover has fallen as low as mere
2% of the total geographical area. Such bleak circumstances highlight urgent need to plant as
many trees to save the diminishing green belts of Pakistan. Subh-e-Nau, has been highlighting
the issue for the last two decades. More than hundred thousand plants with survival rate of 90%
have been planted over the years by Subh-e-Nau.
This year, Subh-e-Nau has arranged many plantation campaigns in and around Federal capital
for the promotion of forests and plantation culture in Pakistan. More than one thousand
indigenous trees have been planted to preserve the local environment and ecosystem of the
country.
Subh-e-Nau also commemorated National Plantation Day on 18th of August and planted various
saplings of various species. Chairperson Subh-e-Nau, Shahida Kausar Farooq urged on National
Plantation Day to promote massive forestation in the face of killing of many precious tree species
in the country.
Preservation and Rehabilitation of Tree:
Once Islamabad was called ‘the green city’ but gradually this green city has been transformed
into a city of roads, skyscrapers and worn out parks and open spaces. The planners and
administrators of the city are bent on damaging the city with their ill-planning and lack of vision.
Environmentalists at Subh-e-Nau observed the same callous response by the city managers
during September 2013 when many trees of the city fell due to the strong winds and storms
during Monsoon. These trees, some of them more than 20 feet in height, were lying across roads
especially around commercial center for about a week.
CDA, as usual, decided to remove all such trees from the soil. This prompted Subh-e-Nau into
action. A team of environmentalists along with the Chairperson of Subh-e-Nau advocated for a
proper preservation and rehabilitation of all such trees. A proper advocacy campaign was
launched and CDA was advised to erect those fallen trees with supports so as to preserve them
from further decay.
The campaign was quite successful as CDA erected all those trees and gave them support to
prevent further decay.
Advocacy for SN Disability Program:
Advocacy plays a very vital role in dissemination and promotion of any idea. Advocacy helps to
transforms words into action. It is a mean to effectively spread ideology and thoughts amongst
the population. Advocacy is aimed at winning likeminded people and at garnering support for
the specific cause.
Keeping the fruits of advocacy in mind, a briefing on Subh-e-Nau disability program was
arranged at Islamabad Club with a group called ‘Friends of Subh-e-Nau Disability Program’. Dr.
Jawad Chishtie shared the progress and structure of Plan. People from all walks of life attended
the event and were briefed about the structure of the disability and rehabilitation program of
Subh-e-Nau.
Dr. Jawad shared that community based program of Subh-e-Nau was first of its kind with the
vision of creating an enabling environment for PWDs and their families.
Creative Hand Exhibition with AKEPB:
Back in December 5, 2013, SN joined hands with Aga Khan Economic and Planning Board
(AKEPB) as part of the awareness and advocacy strategy to disseminate its message far and wide
across the city. Subh-e-Nau displayed its international award winning magazine Monthly Subh-
e-Nau in the event that became center of attention for the participants and organizers alike. A
number of visitors and participants asked for the monthly subscription of the magazine. The SN
team briefed the visitors about the numerous health and environment issues and shared its vision
of a greener Pakistan.
Sports Promotion:
Sports, especially for children have a direct bearing on public health and hence is a highly
important area of Subh-e-Nau’s work. We, at Subh-e-Nau, believe that for nurturing mentally
and physically healthy children, sports play a critical role. The infrastructure to develop sports
and promote deserving sportsmen is extremely weak in Pakistan. We have supported and trained
meritorious players and officials, especially in tennis. Various international, national and local
events of repute have been undertaken for more than a decade now. Today, in the face of many
challenges, sports can play a pivotal role in bringing back national fervor and unity.
Subh-e-Nau Monthly Magazine:
Subh-e-Nau has had the honor of publishing its Monthly Subh-e-Nau magazine on health and
environment issues for the last one decade. The magazine has earned its reputation by winning
an international award on Health and Environment. It is a journalist endeavor that aims to
provide people with information and educate people about public health and environment.
Today, the magazine enjoys a wider circulation network and continues to increase its readership
across the country.
14th National Clay Court Tennis Championship:
Sports activities have suffered a setback owing to the security situation in the country. It is
becoming more and more difficult for the federations and sports boards to organize
tournaments in the country. The culture of sports is being suffocated and sports are diminishing
with each passing day.
In such critical times, Subh-e-Nau has taken this task to promote sports and preserve culture of
sports for the future generations. 14th National Clay Court Tennis Championship was one event
in the string of tournaments Subh-e-Nau has arranged over the course of last one decade. Like
every past tournament, 14th National Championship of Tennis gave Subh-e-Nau an
opportunity to renew its resolve to work for the promotion of sports in the country.
The event saw participation of many dignitaries including Argentinian Ambassador to
Pakistan, Rodolfo J. Martin-Saravia, Mr. Sultan Hayat Khan, former Ambassador of Pakistan to
Kazakistan and Mrs. Nigar Nazar, renowned cartoonist of national and international fame,
some of whom played friendly matches to show their support and empathy towards the game
and players. The event kicked off on 15th of January and finals for all categories were played on
20th January. This tournament gave players a new spirit and zeal to go ahead with improved
game and enhanced confidence.
Earth Day National Tennis Championship 2014:
Earth Day National Tennis Championship was hosted by Subh-e-Nau in May 2014 at Pakistan
Tennis Complex. The tournament was part of SN’s effort to raise awareness about sports and
promote sports culture amongst fellow countrymen.
The federal Minister for Sports and Interprovincial coordination graced the event as a chief
guest. Many other national and international dignitaries participated in the event. SN
chairperson Shahida Kausar Farooq in her concluding address said that Tennis was always less
popular game as compared to Cricket in Pakistan. Therefore, it is upon us to promote other
games along with the cricket.
The championship ended with a tree plantation campaign in which dignitaries and players
planted more than 30 indigenous trees in the vicinity of Tennis complex. The event witnessed a
standing ovation by Chief Guest and other professionals who urged chairperson to come up
with more such events in the future to raise awareness about environment and Public Health.
Ends.
