ANNEXURE - I

MENTOR’S REPORT

(Visit Dates 8th & 10th May, 2014)

1) The system and mechanics of management, monitoring and evaluation need to be reinforced, as the Institution traverses its journey towards autonomy.

2) The extant system of evaluation of teachers is perceived as ineffective.

3) Teachers expressed their desire to be provided training in the industry, which could make their teaching more effective.

4) Staff members were not aware of their opportunities for skill development as they had been subjected to TNA.

5) Senior management functionaries (Dean/HoDs) expressed the requirement of supporting administrative staff in their Departments to handle effectively the mounting volume of data to be collated for TEQIP.

6) Presence of foreign students from neighbouring countries (e.g. Bangladesh, Bhutan) would challenge teaching learning process, add to the cultural ecology, and earn for the Institution a global brand name.

7) R&D tie-ups with IITs and NITs could help germinate a new R& D culture.

8) Need to promote short or long term exchange visits of faculty and industry professionals for infusion of new facets of teaching learning process in the Institutes' environment was strongly supported.

9) Search for avenues of funding for joint R&D projects and joint consultancy projects must be unrelenting.

10) Establishing a Think-Tank jointly with all stakeholders to take stock of emerging trends in engineering education, R&D and technologies is needed.

11) Setups for STEP, EDC's were not promoted in the Institution in support of entrepreneurship by all the stakeholders, especially faculty and students.

12)Teaching of foreign languages could provide some avenues for employability of graduates.

13) No Institutional strategic plan has been articulated so far which could provide coordinated interventions to bring about changes in the direction and help monitor the performance of the Institute.

INNOVATIVE ACTIVITIES

As a part of the contribution made by our students towards Corporate Social Responsibilities, they have developed the following devices:- I) Wireless Heart-Beat Monitoring System ::

MCKVIE students have always surprised the connoisseurs with their magical invention, ‘Wireless Heart – Beat Monitoring System’ is a new feather in its cap.

Cardiovascular disease accounts for over 15 million deaths worldwide every year. The delay between the first symptom of any cardiac ailment and the call for medical assistance has an important role to play. This project “Heart beat monitoring by RF Technology” can be used in hospitals and also for patients who can be under continuous monitoring while traveling from place to place. Since the system is continuously monitoring the patient, it will immediately message to the concerned doctors and relatives if any abnormality is found in the heart beat rate.

This invention will particularly be more effective in cases of heart failure which needs close and continual monitoring procedure after diagnosis.

Team : 3nd year ECE students- Ahmmad Reza, Arundhati Chandra and Ranit Ghosh.

Project Guide : Arijit Sen, ECE Department

II) Theft- and Fire Alarm System ::

Two biggest worries in the life of a common man is Fire and Theft. Three 3rd year ECE & IT Students of MCKVIE developed an affordable gadgets which can confront these obstacles. Although such gadgets already exist in the market but this one has been very carefully designed to meet the needs of the common man. This gadget will have great impact on the society. It is a compact and uses dual purpose circuit consisting of LDR and Thermistor based alarm which will serve two purposes i.e. Making people alert of possible theft, robbery and fire.

The circuit of Thief Detector Unit detects a sudden shadow falling on the light sensor and sounds the bleeper when this happens. The circuit will not respond to gradual changes in brightness to avoid false alarms. The normal light can be used but the circuit will work best if a beam of light is arranged to fall on the light sensor.

The Fire Alarm uses a thermistor that provides a high resistance for high temperature and low resistance for low temperature. This phenomenon has been used to detect fire. We all hope this invention of our students will keep its head high in the crowd of commonplace fire and theft detector in the market.

Team : Ms. Ankita Paul, Sayantonee Maitra and Tania Sengupta - Students of 3rd year ECE & IT Department.

Project Guide : Ms. Tanushree Bose, ECE Department.

III) Truth Detector ::

Truth Detector Project is a unique invention made by ECE students of MCKVIE. The project is the development of a suitable circuit which deals with ‘Galvanic skin response’ of a human. It is a method to measure the electrical conductance of the skin as it varies with changes in the environment around an individual. The moisture levels in the skin vary when an individual is aroused or excited. Sweat glands are controlled by the sympathetic nervous system and change in skin conductance can be a measure of the mental activity. In order to measure the electrical resistance a constant voltage needs to be applied and the skin conductance can be calculated with the help of Ohm’s law. This instrument is extremely useful for detecting a lie thus it can trap criminal without asking several questions.

Team : 3rd year ECE students-Bishan Bhadra, Rivu Sengupta, Arka Banerjee, Suvankar Indra.

Faculty Incharge : Mr. Ajoy Ghoshal, ECE Department. IV) Designing and Experiment of a Solar Power Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) ::

Integrating solar energy into modern aircraft technology has been a topic of interest and has received a lot of attention from researchers over the last two decades. A few among the many potential applications of this technology are the possibility of continuous self sustained flight for purposes such as information relay, surveillance and monitoring. This can be used in Defence to detect the enemy aircrafts and ships. MCKVIE Students designed and manufactured a UAV which is solar power assisted battery operated and can fly for a long duration during day and night. A camera is also mounted at the top; this camera can zoom in for large distances with high definition. The material used is Balsa Wood and 5 servo motors and a propeller blade. Incorporation of radar is under plan to facilitate detection of any kind of metal objects and transmit it to the control station. The radar transmits pulses of radio waves/ microwaves when it detects any metal object. The radio wave reflects back which can be viewed through the laptops in the control stations.

Team : 1st Year & 3rd Year Mechanical Engineering Students and 1st Year Computer Science Engineering.

Faculty Incharge : Mr. Suvanjan Bhattacharyya, Mechanical Engineering Department.

V) Accelerometer Based Gesture Controlled Robot ::

Second Year ECE & ME Students’ designed and manufactured a robotic vehicle that moves around following the instructions from the accelerometer sensor. Accelerometer is a dynamic sensor capable of a vast range of sensing. Accelerometers are available that can measure acceleration in one, two, or three orthogonal axes i.e., it can sense the x, y and the z axis. It can also sense any sort of vibration or tapping.
