▲ Europa Nostra was born in 1963, upon the initiative of Italia

Nostra, in response to the many threats to cultural heritage,

including the threat to Venice. Europa Nostra’s Golden Jubilee

Year therefore started on 15/03/2013 with a public debate,

organised in cooperation with Italia Nostra, at the UNESCO

Office in Venice. | Europa Nostra est née en 1963, à l’initiative

Europa Nostra represents a rapidly growing citizens’ movement for

the safeguarding of Europe’s cultural and natural heritage. Our

pan-European network is composed of 250 member organisations

(heritage associations and foundations with a combined member-

ship of more than 5 million people), 150 associated organisations

(governmental bodies, local authorities and corporations) and also

1300 individual members who directly support our mission. In 2013,

Europa Nostra celebrated its 50th Anniversary.

Together,

■ we form an important lobby for cultural heritage in Europe;

■ we celebrate excellence through the European Heritage Awards

organised by Europa Nostra in partnership with the European

Union; and

■ we campaign to save Europe’s endangered historic monuments,

sites and cultural landscapes.

We are the Voice of Cultural Heritage in Europe.

Europa Nostra représente le mouvement en plein essor pour la

sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel et naturel de l’Europe. Notre vaste

réseau européen regroupe 250 organisations membres (associations et

fondations pour la préservation du patrimoine avec un nombre total de

plus de 5 millions d’adhérents), 150 organisations associées (organismes

gouvernementaux, villes et collectivités locales, et entreprises), et

également 1300 membres individuels qui apportent leur soutien direct

à notre mission. En 2013, Europa Nostra a célébré son 50e Anniversaire.

Last December, I was also very pleased to visit Brussels. I was indeed deeplymoved to be in the heart of Europe’s capital city, together with EuropaNostra’s numerous members and partners, for the closing events of ourJubilee Year: from the conference at the Solvay Library - a proud laureateof one of our Awards, to the Citizens’ dialogue and concert held at BOZAR,and with high level meetings, with President Barroso and CommissionerVassiliou and the exhibition on our Awards held at the Berlaymont, theEC headquarters in Brussels. There also, we could not have imagined abetter choreography for placing the spotlight on the key role played byEuropa Nostra for the advancement of the Europe of Culture.

In order to successfully fulfill this role, Europa Nostra cannot act alone.It must build many alliances and fruitful partnerships, not only withother organisations active in the field of heritage, but also with artists,intellectuals, scientists, in brief with the wider world of culture. Thisapproach lies at the heart of the ‘New Narrative for Europe’ initiativewhich has been launched to stimulate our quest to for formulating theright arguments and finding the right words to help Europeans recon-nect with the European ideal. We were glad to actively contribute tothis initiative which I discussed, at length, with President Barroso during our very friendly meeting in Brussels. Let us hope that in thefuture, European leaders will listen more closely and more openly to allthose voices which speak on behalf of the Europe of Culture. This is, inour view, indispensible for the survival of the European project.

If we wish to speak in a convincing way about Europe, we must find a newlanguage and we must strive to provide Europe with a new impetus.And in order to find the necessary inspiration and strength, we mustimperatively draw on the treasures of our culture and our cultural heritage.They indeed constitute the fertile soil which feeds our vitality and ourcreativity.

MessageI was delighted to be the President of Europa Nostra in the year during which we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our organisation.This Jubilee Year was a perfect occasion to measure the progress which we have made, but also to become fully aware of the relevance andimportance of our mission for Europe today. Especially in times whenthe core values which lies at the heart of the European project are questioned, both from inside and outside Europe’s borders.

The year 2013 was marked by an unprecedented level of activity. I wishto congratulate all those who were the architects of this Jubilee programme, and especially our Board and our Council, under the visionaryand inspiring leadership of our Executive President, Denis de Kergorlay,as well as to our hard-working Secretariat, led by our enthusiastic andefficient Secretary General, Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic. The qualityof our team and the harmony with which this team works are amongthe greatest assets of our organisation. I also wish to give thanks personally to all our donors, public and private, for their confidenceand generosity. Together, we must make sure that the level of ourresources matches the level of our ambitions.

I keep a great memory of Athens. Special thanks to our Vice-President,Costa Carras and the entire team at Elliniki Etairia! We could not havedreamt of a more majestic stage for the Awards-giving ceremony underthe Acropolis: 4000 persons were gathered that night at the Odeon ofHerodes Atticus to celebrate – with Europa Nostra and with theEuropean Union – the Europe of Culture. That evening, we were allunited by the feeling of pride to be the citizens of our Europe: a Europewhich is much more than an internal market, a common currency or amilitary alliance; a Europe which is a wonderful symphony of cultures!And we were carried by the hope that it is this Europe which will be ableto draw from the power of its cultures in order to win – yet another timein its long history – a victory over all the difficulties with which its citizens are struggling today.

Speaking about challenges and victories, I am especially pleased withthe launch of our new programme ‘The 7 Most Endangered’. This programme reflects our resolution to join forces to save the gems of ourshared heritage which are facing degradation or are at risk of being lostforever. It also reflects our conviction that we should never accept adefeat: together we can change the course of events. The first results ofthis new programme are encouraging; they prove that if we have a shareddetermination and if we pool our expertise, endangered monumentsand sites in Europe can be saved.

J’ai été très heureux d’être le Président d’Europa Nostra durant l’année deson 50ème anniversaire. Cette année nous a permis de mesurer le cheminparcouru mais aussi de prendre pleinement conscience de l’actualité denotre mission si importante pour l’Europe. Surtout au moment où lesvaleurs sur lesquelles repose le projet européen se voient mises encause, tant de l’intérieur que de l’extérieur des frontières de l’Europe.

L’année 2013 fut marquée par un nombre d’activités sans précédent. Jetiens à féliciter tous ceux et celles qui en étaient les architectes, et particulièrement notre Comité exécutif et notre Conseil, sous le leadershipinspiré et inspirant de notre Président exécutif, Denis de Kergorlay, ainsique notre Secrétariat, sous la direction enthousiaste et efficace de notreSecrétaire générale, Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic. En effet, la qualitéde notre équipe et l’entente qui règne en son sein sont parmi les plus grands atouts de notre organisation. Je tiens aussi à remercier personnellement tous nos mécènes, publics ou privés, pour leur confianceet leur générosité. Ensemble, nous devons faire en sorte que les ressources de notre organisation soient à la hauteur de nos ambitions.

Je garde un souvenir inoubliable d’Athènes. Un très grand merci à notreVice-président, Costa Carras et à toute l’équipe d’Elliniki Etairia! Nousn’aurions pas pu rêver d’une mise en scène plus majestueuse pour laCérémonie de remise de nos Prix au pied de l’Acropole : 4000 personnesétaient ce soir-là rassemblées à l’Odéon de Herodes Atticus pour célébrer - avec Europa Nostra et avec l’Union européenne - l’Europe dela Culture. Ce soir-là, nous étions tous unis par un sentiment de fiertéd’être citoyens de notre Europe : une Europe qui est bien plus qu’unmarché intérieur, une monnaie commune ou une alliance militaire ;une Europe qui est une merveilleuse symphonie de cultures ! Et nousétions habités par l’espoir que cette Europe-là saurait puiser dans laforce de ses cultures pour remporter - une nouvelle fois dans sa longuehistoire - la victoire sur tant de difficultés dont les Européens se sentent assaillis.

En parlant des défis et des victoires, je suis particulièrement heureux dulancement de notre nouveau programme « Les 7 sites les plus menacés ».Ce programme reflète notre détermination à agir ensemble pour sauverdes joyaux de notre patrimoine commun menacés de dégradation etmême de disparition. Il reflète aussi notre volonté de ne jamais nousrésigner à la défaite : ensemble nous pouvons changer le cours des choses.Les premiers résultats obtenus sont encourageants et montrent qu’avecconviction et mise en commun de nos compétences, des sites et desmonuments d’Europe peuvent être sauvés.

En décembre dernier, j’ai également été très heureux de me rendre àBruxelles. J’ai été profondément ému d’être au cœur de la capitale del’Europe, avec de nombreux membres et partenaires d’Europa Nostra, pourla clôture de l’année de notre jubilé : de la conférence à la BibliothèqueSolvay, lauréat d’un de nos Prix, au dialogue citoyen et au concert quis’en est suivi au Palais des Beaux-Arts, en passant par des rencontres àhaut niveau avec le President Barroso et la Commissaire Vassiliou et levernissage de l’exposition sur nos Prix au Berlaymont, le siège de laCommission européenne. Encore une fois, nous n’aurions pas pu rêverd’une meilleure chorégraphie pour témoigner de la place incontournableque notre organisation joue à présent pour la promotion d’une Europede la Culture.

Et pour bien remplir ce rôle, Europa Nostra ne peut pas agir seule. Elledoit nouer de nombreuses alliances et de fructueux partenariats, nonseulement avec d’autres organisations actives dans le domaine dupatrimoine, mais aussi avec les artistes, les intellectuels, les scientifiques,bref avec l’ensemble du monde de la culture. Ceci est le sens même del’initiative du « Nouveau Récit pour l’Europe » qui a pour objet de trou-ver les arguments et les mots justes qui permettront aux Européens derenouer avec l’idéal européen. Nous avons été heureux de contribueractivement à cette initiative dont j’ai eu l’occasion de parler longuementavec le Président Barroso lors de notre rencontre fort amicale à Bruxelles.Espérons qu’à l’avenir, les dirigeants européens sauront être plus étroitement et plus sincèrement à l’écoute des voix qui s’expriment aunom de l’Europe de la Culture. Il en va de la survie du projet européen.

Pour parler de l’Europe, il faut trouver un nouveau langage et êtreanimé d’un nouveau souffle. Et pour trouver l’inspiration et la forcenécessaires, nous devons impérativement puiser dans les trésors denotre culture et de notre patrimoine culturel qui sont le grand vivier denotre vitalité et de notre créativité.

L’Europe est une symphonie de cultures

Introduction

2013 was a year in which we were proud to celebrate the 50th

anniversary of Europa Nostra. This was indeed a year of celebra-tion…Celebration of 50 years of continuous action in support ofEurope’s heritage, both cultural and natural. Celebration of ourfounding fathers and of all those women and men who have generously given to Europa Nostra their expertise, time and alsotheir financial support; it is thanks to all of them that Europa Nostrahas grown - over the years - into a leading European organisationpromoting and defending the interests of our cultural heritage.Celebration also of our fruitful cooperation and dialogue with the EUInstitutions... Finally, celebration of new achievements and newpartnerships, such as the ‘7 Most Endangered’ programme launchedthis year with the support of the European Investment BankInstitute or the European cooperation project ‘Cultural HeritageCounts for Europe’ supported by the EU ‘Culture Programme’ and run in partnership with members of the European Heritage Alliance3.3.

In 2013, we organised a true ‘European marathon’ of events, smalland large, in Venice, London, Athens, Dubrovnik, Lisbon, Cologne,Paris, Brussels and Berlin. We have strengthened the ties with ourmember organisations in various European countries, and especiallyin Greece, Italy and Portugal. We took active part in a wider discussion on the future of Europe through our involvement in the‘New Narrative for Europe’ process, initiated by the EuropeanParliament and run under the leadership of President Barroso.Finally, from the communication point of view, this Golden JubileeYear was also a great success: with exceptional media coverage of ourCongress in Athens; with an ever growing presence in social mediaand the launch of a new partnership with the Google CulturalInstitute; with numerous articles published in the magazines of ourmembers, and with a very large audience of 4000 persons at theunforgettable awards-giving ceremony at the foot of the Acropolis.

Our respectful and warm thanks go to our President, Maestro PlácidoDomingo. His active participation in key Jubilee events – in Athens(in June) and in Brussels (in December) – as well as his profoundcommitment to our cause have contributed decisively to EuropaNostra’s rayonnement and to its continous growth in impact andinfluence. We also wish to pay special tribute to our award winners;their creativity, passion, expertise and perseverance serve as asource of inspiration for our ongoing work.

In regards to our finances, we are very proud that thanks to the gen-erosity of our numerous members and donors, especially fromGreece, combined with the vital financial support which we receivefrom the European Union, the year 2013 ended with a modest surplus.Working to further develop our organisation while ensuring that its finances are in good health is a top priority of our Board, as indicated in the report of our new Treasurer, Mrs Truze Lodder (seepage 42).

Today, we stand ready to face, with confidence and imagination, thenew decade ahead of us, beginning with the year 2014 which will be

Nos remerciements respectueux et chaleureux vont à notrePrésident, Maestro Plácido Domingo. Sa participation active aux évènements majeurs de notre Jubilé - à Athènes (en juin) et àBruxelles (en décembre) - ainsi que son profond dévouement à notrecause, ont contribué de façon décisive au rayonnement d’EuropaNostra et à l’accroissement de l’impact et de l’influence de notreaction. Notre hommage va aussi aux lauréats de nos prix dont la créativité, la passion, l’expertise et la persévérance servent de source d’inspiration pour notre travail en cours.

Du côté des ressources financières, nous sommes particulièrementfiers d’annoncer que grâce à la générosité de nombreux adhérents etmécènes privés – notamment en Grèce –, conjugués avec le soutienfinancier vital qui nous est apporté par les institutions européennes,nous avons pu terminer l’année avec un léger surplus financier.Faire avancer notre organisation tout en lui assurant une bonnesanté financière figure parmi les priorités de notre Comité exécutif

L’Europe gagnera... grâce à son patrimoine !

En 2013 nous avons été fiers de célébrer le 50ème anniversaired’Europa Nostra. Ce fut en effet une année de célébration... La célébration de nos 50 années d’action continue en faveur du patrimoine culturel et naturel de l’Europe. La célébration de nospères fondateurs et de toutes ces femmes et ces hommes qui ontgénéreusement mis au service d’Europa Nostra leur expertise, leurengagement et leurs moyens financiers. C’est bien grâce à toutes cespersonnes qu’Europa Nostra a pu devenir – au fil des années – laprincipale organisation européenne qui défend les intérêts de notrepatrimoine culturel. La célébration également de notre dialoguefructueux avec les institutions de l’Union européenne. Et enfin, lacélébration de nouvelles initiatives et de nouveaux partenariats, tels que le programme des « 7 sites les plus menacés », lancé en 2013 avec le soutien de l’Institut de la Banque européenne d’investissement, ou le projet de coopération européenne « LePatrimoine culturel compte pour l’Europe » soutenu par le« Programme Culture » de l’Union européenne et mené ensembleavec les membres de l’Alliance européenne pour le patrimoine 3.3.

En 2013, nous avons organisé un véritable « marathon européen »d’événements, à grande ou petite échelle, à Venise, Londres,Athènes, Dubrovnik, Lisbonne, Cologne, Paris, Bruxelles et Berlin.Nous avons renforcé nos liens avec nos organisations membres dansles différents pays d’Europe et notamment en Grèce, en Italie et auPortugal. Enfin, notre Cinquantenaire fut ungrand succès sur le plan de la communication : avec une couvertureexceptionnelle par les médias de notre Congrès d’Athènes ; avec uneprésence accrue sur les réseaux sociaux et un partenariat noué avecl’Institut culturel de Google ; avec de nombreux articles publiés dansles revues de nos membres, et avec la participation du grand public

comme indiqué dans le rapport financier de notre nouvelle trésorière,Mme Truze Lodder (voir page 43).

Nous voilà à présent prêts à affronter – avec confiance et imagination –la prochaine décennie de la vie d’Europa Nostra. Pour commencer,l’année 2014 sera particulièrement importante pour l’Europe. Elle sera,entre autres, marquée par l’entrée en vigueur de nouveaux programmesde l’UE adoptés sur la base du nouveau budget européen pour 2014-2020. Nous devons veiller à ce que ces programmes prennent dûmenten compte les intérêts du patrimoine. Et puis, quels que soient lesrésultats des élections européennes du mois de mai, il nous faudranouer de fructueux rapports avec les nouveaux parlementaires et les nouveaux dirigeants des différentes institutions de l’Union européenne.

La crise actuelle va au delà d’une simple crise économique ; il s’agitd’une crise de confiance. Pas seulement entre les institutions et lescitoyens de l’Europe, mais surtout une crise de confiance en nous-mêmes. Les Institutions européennes - mais également lescitoyens - doivent donc s’investir davantage dans la redécouverte etla réaffirmation des principales valeurs culturelles qui sont à la basedu projet européen. Quant à Europa Nostra, ensemble avec nos nombreuses organisations membres, notre tâche est de structurer etd’animer un « lobby » convaincant qui plaide pour la mise en placed’une véritable politique européenne en faveur du patrimoine culturel. Nous devons aussi continuer à mobiliser la société civile autravers de l’Europe pour s’opposer, où et quand il y a lieu, à toutdéveloppement politique ou économique qui soit préjudiciable pourles monuments, les sites et les paysages en Europe.

Pour finir, nous souhaitons remercier tous les membres de notrevaste réseau, surtout les membres de nos différents organes et comités, et enfin notre Staff compétent et dévoué, pour leur engagement et leur soutien. La performance et l’impact de notreréseau dépend de ce travail en commun. Il ne nous reste plus qu’àvous inviter à vous impliquer davantage – en tant que membres,bénévoles, experts ou donateurs – dans les nombreuses activités quenous allons mener en 2014 et au-delà.

very important for Europe. This year will be marked by the start ofthe new EU Programmes based on the current 7 year EU budget for2014-2020. We must make sure that heritage concerns and interestsare duly considered in these programmes. Irrespective of the resultsof the European elections in May 2014, we shall also need to investspecial efforts in developing fruitful relations with new members ofthe European Parliament and the new leaders of various EUInstitutions.

The present-day crisis cannot be reduced to an economic crisisalone; we are in fact facing a crisis of trust. Not only betweenEurope’s Institutions and Europe’s citizens, but above all, a crisis oftrust within ourselves. Therefore, the European Institutions and alsothe European citizens must invest more efforts into rediscoveringand reaffirming the core cultural values which are embedded in theEuropean project. As for Europa Nostra, together with our numerousmember organisations, our task is to provide a structure and leader-ship to Europe’s heritage ‘lobby’ advocating for a true European pol-icy in regards to cultural heritage. We also must further mobiliseEurope’s civil society to oppose, whenever and wherever necessary,political or economic developments which are detrimental toEurope’s monuments, sites and landscapes.

In conclusion, we wish to thank all members of our vast network, and in particular members of our various governing bodies and committees, as well as our competent and committed staff, for theirvital contribution and support. Our networks’ good performance andimpact depend, to a large extent, on this team effort. We thereforeinvite you to become even more actively involved – as members, volunteers, experts or donors – in the many different activitieswhich we shall undertaken in 2014 and beyond.

SPOTLIGHT ON EUROPA NOSTRA’S 50th ANNIVERSARY CLOSING EVENTS IN BRUSSELSOn 5 December 2013, Europa Nostra closed its 50th anniversary year inthe heart of the European decision-making, organising a majorEuropean Policy Conference and related events which brought togetherdistinguished participants from the European Institutions and theworld of culture and heritage.

The Policy Conference ‘Cultural Heritage for Europe, Europe for CulturalHeritage’, organised in cooperation with our corporate friend, Edificio, atBibliothèque Solvay, gave the floor to eminent experts, decision-makersand high-level representatives from EU institutions. It demonstratedthe multiple values of heritage and outlined the future EU strategy for cultural heritage. The morning session consisted of three panel discussions: ‘Contributing to a Sustainable Development’, ‘EngagingCommunities’ and ‘The 7 Most Endangered: the way forward’. In addition, Europa Nostra’s project ‘Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe’,supported by the Culture Programme of the European Union, was publicly launched (see also below). In the afternoon, after the paneldiscussion ‘Heritage Movement without Borders’, the final session wasintroduced by a major policy speech by EN President, Plácido Domingo.High-level representatives of all EU Institutions and bodies took thefloor in this concluding session, when we also viewed a video message

from Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament. They allagreed that cultural heritage is a resource for Europe and that the EUshould develop a true policy with regard to heritage.After the Conference, Commissioner Vassiliou and Maestro Domingoopened the photo exhibition ‘Europe: Our Past, our Future’ about theEU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards at the EC head-quarters. The exhibition featured 33 outstanding achievements inConservation, Research, Dedicated Service, and Education, Trainingand Awareness-Raising which were awarded since 2002. The Presidentof the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, attended the vernissage and made an inspiring speech, praising the fruitful partner-ship between the European Commission and Europa Nostra and highlighting the key role of civil society players in strengthening thecultural dimension of the European project.In the evening, during a Citizens’ Dialogue held at BOZAR, the futureof Europe and the role of culture as a catalyst for European integrationwere debated by a distinguished panel composed of Maestro Domingo,Commissioner Vassiliou, Isabelle Durant (Vice-President of theEuropean Parliament), Michelangelo Pistoletto (renowned Italian visual artist), and Paul Dujardin (Director of the Palais des Beaux-Arts).700 people participated in this live-streamed event, which was organised by the Representation of the European Commission inBelgium and the Chancellery of the Prime Minister in partnership withBOZAR and Europa Nostra, and which ended with the concert entitled‘European Inspirations’ by four beautiful European voices: AlexandraGravas, mezzo-soprano from Greece, Katia Guerreiro, fado singer fromPortugal, Ivan Thirion, baritone from Belgium and Kakhader Shavidze,bass from Georgia.

PATRIMOINE CULTUREL COMPTE POUR L’EUROPELes 3-4 juillet dernier, le projet de coopération européenne« Patrimoine culturel compte pour l’Europe : vers l’élaboration d’unindex européen pour mesurer la valeur du patrimoine culturel », soutenupar le programme Culture de l’UE, a tenu la première réunion de soncomité directeur à Bruxelles. Les partenaires du projet sont HeritageEurope, ENCATC, le Centre Culturel International de Cracovie,Institut Raymond Lemaire de Louvain, Heritage Alliance de Londreset Europa Nostra qui agit comme coordinateur du projet. Ce projet aégalement fait l’objet de discussions avec les membres de l’Allianceeuropéenne pour le patrimoine 3.3, le 4 décembre, avant d’être inauguré le 5 décembre à l’occasion de la conférence d’Europa Nostraà Bruxelles. Le projet « Patrimoine culturel compte pour l’Europe »vise à rassembler des arguments solides et convaincants pour l’élaboration d’une politique de l’UE en faveur du patrimoine culturel.Pour atteindre cet objectif, ce projet va recueillir des analyses rigou-reuses menées dans les États membres de l’UE sur l’impact social,économique, culturel et environnemental du patrimoine culturel, etde ses multiples bénéfices pour la société.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: NEW NARRATIVE FOR EUROPEEuropa Nostra’s Secretary General Sneska Quaedvlieg-Mihailovic wasamong the personalities invited by the EC President José ManuelBarroso to take part in the Cultural Committee entrusted with the taskto steer the ‘New Narrative for Europe’ project. The aim of this initiativewas to bring together Europe’s artists, intellectuals, scientists and cultural practitioners to debate on the values and symbols that uniteEuropean citizens (major public events were organised in July inWarsaw and in December in Milan) and to draft an inspiring text with a new vision for Europe based on the strength of Europe’s culture andheritage (this text was launched on 1 March 2014 in Berlin in the presence of President Barroso and Chancellor Merkel).

CULTURAL HERITAGE COUNTS FOR EUROPEOn 3-4 July, the European cooperation project ‘Cultural HeritageCounts for Europe: Towards a European Index for Valuing CulturalHeritage’ supported by the EU Culture Programme, held its firstSteering Committee meeting in Brussels. The project partners areHeritage Europe, ENCATC, International Cultural Centre in Krakow,Raymond Lemaire Institute from Leuven, Heritage Alliance from Londonand Europa Nostra, acting as project coordinator. This project was alsodiscussed with members of the European Heritage Alliance 3.3 on 4 December before being publicly launched on 5 December at the occasion of the Europa Nostra Policy Conference in Brussels. The“Cultural Heritage Counts for Europe” project aims to present strong andconvincing arguments for developing an EU policy for cultural heritage.In order to achieve this goal, a broad mapping project has beendesigned to collect evidence-based research conducted in the EU MemberStates on the social, economic, cultural and environmental impact ofimmovable cultural heritage and on its multiple benefits for the society.

On 16 June 2013, at the Odeion of Herodes Atticus located at thefoot of the Acropolis, the European Union and Europa Nostra celebrated the 30 Award winning achievements of the EU Prize forCultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards 2013, chosen fromamong 197 submitted entries from 30 European countries. Duringthe ceremony, the 7 Grand Prix Laureates were announced, eachreceiving the highest accolade and a monetary reward of Z 10,000.The winner of the Public Choice Award 2013 was the restoration project of the Propylaea Central Building at the Athenian Acropolis.

The Awards were presented by Mrs Androulla Vassiliou, the EuropeanCommissioner responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualismand Youth, together with Plácido Domingo, President of EuropaNostra. The Ceremony was held under the auspices of H.E. the Presidentof the Hellenic Republic Dr. Karolos Papoulias.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE 2013 EUROPEAN HERITAGE AWARDS CEREMONY: A TRULY MAJESTIC EVENT UNDER THE ACROPOLISThe 2013 European Heritage Awards Ceremony which was organisedwith the invaluable cooperation of Elliniki Etairia - the Greek Societyfor the Environment and Cultural Heritage, brought together some4000 people from Greece and all over Europe. On this memorableoccasion, we honoured “the best of the best” achievements in theheritage field. This evening was a true celebration of “Europe of Culture”in the breathtaking setting of the Roman Odeion of Herodes Atticus.

In his speech, Plácido Domingo called for a New Deal for Culture inEurope, stating that “Our Culture is what makes Europe - Europe”.

In recognition of 40 years of his visionary leadership, generous dedication and tireless efforts in promoting Europa Nostra’s missionand in enhancing the organisation’s growth and development, CostaCarras received from Plácido Domingo a Medal of Honour, the highestdistinction conferred by Europa Nostra to an individual member whohas made an exceptional contribution to our work.

The Awards Ceremony was enhanced by the 15-year-old singerYiorgos Ioannou from Cyprus, and by the renowned Greek singerMario Frangoulis with his moving interpretation of the song‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. The evening ended with an impressiveartistic performance entitled ‘The Greek and Nature - from Homer toElytis’, which was conceived for this occasion by Lydia and CostaCarras, co-founders of Elliniki Etairia, working closely with a series ofprominent artists, among them Lydia Koniordou, Maria Farantouriand Dionysis Savvopoulos from Greece as well as Alkidis Ioannidisfrom Cyprus. This performance highlighted the symbolic and creativeinteraction between man and nature in Greek culture, a true corner-stone of our European civilization.

Lors de la cérémonie, les7 lauréats du Grand Prix ont été annoncés, chacun recevant la plushaute distinction et une récompense monétaire de 10.000 Z. Legagnant du Prix du Public 2013 fut le projet de restauration du bâtiment central des Propylées à l’Acropole d’Athènes.

Les Prix ont été remis par Mme Androulla Vassiliou, Commissaire euro-péenne chargée de l’éducation, de la culture, du multilinguisme et dela jeunesse, et par Maestro Plácido Domingo, Président d’EuropaNostra. Europa Nostra’s new flagship programme ‘The 7 Most Endangered’, developed in partnership with the European Investment Bank Institute, was launched in January 2013. The programme

identifies the most endangered monuments and sites in Europe and seeks to mobilize public and private partners on a local, national and European level to find a sustainable future for those

The ‘7 Most Endangered’ Sites and Monuments selected for 2013:

■ Roman amphitheatre of Dürres in AlbaniaThis early 2nd century AD Roman amphitheatre remained unknownuntil its excavation in 1960s. Located in the very centre of Dürres, itis one of the most remarkable heritage sites not only in Albania butin the whole Balkan region. Due to its late discovery, the monumentis confronted with chaotic urban planning, which has affected itsstructure, and it has suffered from continued deterioration.

■ Buffer zone in the historic centre of Nicosia in CyprusThe Cyprus conflict led to the division of the island and the creationof the Nicosia buffer zone in 1974, cutting through the historiccentre and disrupting the city’s cohesion. Decades of abandonmenthave undermined the high architectural value of the buildingslocated in the buffer zone, among which are medieval and neoclassicalmonuments. The buffer zone also has a devastating impact on thequality of the environment and living conditions of the entire citycentre.

■ Vauban’s 17th century fortifications in Briançon in FranceThis 17th century masterpiece of mountain fortifications, consideredto be one of the finest in the world and recognised by UNESCO in2008 as part of the network of 12 fortified ensembles designed byVauban in France, is today seriously threatened by the degradationof the rocky foundations, severe frost and a general lack of main-tenance.

Saving endangered historic monuments and sites lies at the heartof Europa Nostra’s mission. We campaign side by side our memberorganisations and strategic partners to oppose threats to specificmonuments, sites and landscapes throughout Europe.

Spotlight on the launch of the ‘7 Most Endangered’ programme To mark its 50th anniversary, Europa Nostra decided to launch a newflagship programme ‘The 7 Most Endangered’, with the EuropeanInvestment Bank Institute as a founding partner. This programmewas developed to identify a priority list of heritage sites in danger,with the aim to mobilize support from public and private partners onlocal, national and European levels, and develop sustainable plansfor safeguarding those sites. In April, an international AdvisoryPanel selected the short list of 14 most threatened landmarks ofEurope. The final list of 7 sites was decided by the Europa NostraBoard and announced during the Congress in Athens, on 12 June.From September to November, visits to the 7 sites were organised bydelegations composed of heritage experts appointed by EuropaNostra, as well as of financial experts appointed by the EIB Instituteand the Council of Europe Development Bank, as an associate partnerof the programme. Their reports with recommendations for concreterescue plans were presented during the Council meeting in Brussels,on 6 December. In December, Europa Nostra also started a partnershipwith the Google Cultural Institute, with the launch of the onlineexhibition ‘The 7 Most Endangered: Campaigning to save Europe’smost threatened sites’, which will help raise wider awareness aboutthe endangered sites identified by this new programme.

Les 7 sites et monuments les plus menacés, sélectionnés pour2013 sont :■ Amphithéâtre romain à Durrës en Albanie

Cet amphithéâtre romain datant du début du 2ème siècle après J.C.est resté inconnu jusqu’aux années 60. Situé dans le centre de laville de Dürres, il est l’un des sites patrimoniaux les plus significatifsnon seulement en Albanie, mais dans toute la région des Balkans.Du fait de sa découverte tardive, le monument a souffert d’unedétérioration constante et de l’aménagement urbain chaotiquequi a dégradé sa structure.

■ La zone tampon du centre historique de Nicosie à ChypreAu lendemain du conflit chypriote, en 1974, la zone tampon deNicosie qui traverse le centre historique fut créée, ce qui a bouleverséla cohésion de la ville. Suite à des décennies d’abandon, la valeurarchitecturale des bâtiments de cette zone – parmi lesquels setrouvent des monuments médiévaux et néoclassiques – s’estappauvrie. La zone tampon a également eu un effet dévastateursur la qualité de l’environnement ainsi que sur les conditions devie de l’ensemble du centre-ville.

■ Les fortifications du 17ème siècle de Vauban à Briançon à FranceCe chef-d’œuvre de fortifications du 17ème siècle situé dans lesmontagnes, considéré comme l’une des citadelles les plus aboutiesdans le monde et reconnue par l’UNESCO en 2008 parmi le réseau

Coup de projecteur sur le lancement des « 7 sites les plus menacés »Pour marquer son 50ème anniversaire, Europa Nostra a décidé delancer son nouveau programme phare des « 7 sites les plus menacés »,avec l’Institut de la Banque européenne d’investissement commepartenaire fondateur. Ce programme a été développé pour établirune liste prioritaire de sites du patrimoine en danger, dans le but demobiliser le soutien de partenaires publics et privés aux niveauxlocal, national et européen, et d’élaborer des plans de développementdurable pour la sauvegarde de ces sites. ■ Monastère de San Benedetto Po de style Renaissance en ItalieAu cours de la dernière décennie, une restauration complète etcoûteuse a permis au monastère de San Benedetto Po datant du16ème siècle, de retrouver sa splendeur d’antan. Hélas, les tremble-ments de terre des 20 et 29 mai 2012 ont gravement endommagéle monument et retardé le processus de conservation. Depuis, degrandes parties du complexe sont devenus inaccessibles au publicen raison des risques de chute de débris ou d’effondrement.

■ Monastère du 15ème siècle à Setúbal au PortugalLe monastère de Jesus de Setúbal est l’un des premiers exemples dustyle gothique portugais, appelé style Manuélin. Il a été reconnu – parl’attribution du ‘Label du patrimoine européen’ – comme un symboletangible de l’histoire commune de l’Europe. Malgré sa précieuse valeurhistorique et patrimoniale, le monument fut fermé au public depuisplus de 20 ans car l’État portugais manquait de fonds nécessairespour couvrir le projet de conservation vaste et coûteux.

■ Paysage minier historique de Ro∫ia Montan„ en RoumanieLe paysage de Ro∫ia Montan„ a été profondément transformé parles activités minières depuis plus de trois millénaires. A la surface,les vestiges urbains démontrent qu’une forte interaction entrel’homme et son environnement a eu lieu tout au long des siècles.Cependant, ce paysage minier historique, l’un des plus significatifsen Europe, est aujourd’hui sérieusement menacé par un très grandprojet de mine d’or à ciel ouvert.

■ Eglise arménienne de Saint-Georges à Mardin en TurquiePendant 15 siècles, l’Église de Saint-Georges fut le foyer spiritueld’une très large communauté arménienne dans la ville turque deMardin. Ce bâtiment historique a été fondé en 420 après JC et aété lié à la population arménienne jusqu’en 1915, lorsque celle-ci aété forcée de quitter la ville. En dépit de son importance historiqueet culturelle, ce monument se trouve actuellement dans un étatde délabrement avancé.

■ Renaissance monastery of San Benedetto Po in ItalyDuring the last decade, an extensive and costly restoration hadreturned the 16th century San Benedetto Po monastery to its formersplendour. Alas, the earthquakes of 20 and 29 May 2012 severelydamaged the monument and affected the entire conservation process.Since then, large parts of the complex have become inaccessibleto the public due to the risks of falling debris or collapse.

■ 15th Century monastery in Setúbal in PortugalThe monastery of Jesus in Setúbal is one of the first examples ofthe Portuguese Late Gothic style, known as Manueline, and hasbeen recognised – by the attribution of an European HeritageLabel - as a tangible witness of Europe’s shared history. Despite itsrare historic and heritage value, the monument has been closedto the public for more than 20 years, due to the fact that thePortuguese State lacked funds to cover the extensive and costlyconservation project.

■ Historic mining landscape of Rosia Montana in RomaniaThe landscape of Rosia Montana has been masterfully transformedby mining activities for more than three millennia. The remnantsof surface habitation demonstrate an intense interaction betweenman and the environment throughout the centuries. However,this historic mining landscape, one of the most representatives inEurope, is today seriously threatened by a large-scale, open-castgold mining project.

■ Armenian Church of St. George in Mardin in Turkey.For 15 centuries the Church of St. George was the spiritual homeof the large Armenian community in the Turkish city of Mardin.This historical building was founded in 420 AD and was in useuntil 1915, when the Armenian population was forced to leave thecity. In spite of its outstanding historical and cultural importance,this monument is currently in an advanced state of decay.

SPOTLIGHT ON ATHENS: 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONGRESS, 13 – 17 JUNE 2013The 2013 Congress, which took place in Athens and celebrated EuropaNostra’s Golden Jubilee, was made possible thanks to the majorassistance and dedication of our Country Representation in Greece,Elliniki Etairia, led by EN Vice-President Costa Carras. Invaluablefinancial support was received from a wide range of public and privatebodies in Greece, thus enabling a varied and most attractive programme.The Congress and the Awards Ceremony received extensive mediacoverage in the press, on TV and by online media.

THE CONGRESS WAS COMPOSED OF A SERIES OF EVENTS:■ Following the Council meeting held in the impressive Acropolis

Museum, the Local Award Ceremony for the Averoff Building – a 2012Grand Prix winner of an EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa NostraAward – took place at the National Technical University of Athens.

■ The Heritage Excellence Fair with presentations by the 2013 AwardWinners, organised at the Benaki Museum Pireos, served as a platformfor creative exchanges and attracted a large interested public.

■ The participants also took part in an inspiring pilgrimage to AncientAthenian Democracy, which ended with a memorable visit to theNational Observatory of Athens where Androulla Vassiliou, EuropeanCommissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth,and Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, made meaningfuland poetic speeches to the large audience of 400 people from Greeceand the rest of Europe.

■ The 50th anniversary General Assembly was the occasion to pay tribute to all women and men who have contributed over the yearsto the development of Europa Nostra. Many of them were present in Athens, including HRH the Prince Consort of Denmark, formerPresident of Europa Nostra. Costa Carras made an inspiringoverview of Europa Nostra’s achievements over 50 years of action,while Plácido Domingo, the current President, also spoke about themany challenges ahead of us.

■ A panel discussion on ‘Europe-wide mobilisation for saving Europe’sendangered heritage’ took place at the General Assembly, with theactive participation of Commissioner Vassiliou, and representativesof the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of theCouncil of Europe, the EIB Institute, the EEA Funding Mechanismand INTO. There was a consensus that various European partners,public and private, should work closer together to save Europe’s heritage which continuously faces many threats.

Forum (EHHF) on 23-24/05 in Oslo. The Oslo conference ended with the adoption of the

Declaration promoting a stronger cooperation between public bodies and civil society

SELECTION OF OTHER NETWORK ACTIVITIES:■ A public debate entitled ‘For the Renaissance of Europe’s cultural

and natural heritage’ took place on 15 March at the UNESCO RegionalOffice in Venice. The renowned Italian art critic, TV presentator andProfessor Philippe Daverio made an inspiring introductory speechfollowed by contributions of European and Italian representatives ofpublic and private bodies concerned with heritage.

■ From 19 to 21 September, ‘The Best in Heritage’ conference, washeld in partnership with Europa Nostra in Dubrovnik, Croatia, andmarked the launch of the Global Heritage Forum, jointly convenedby Europa Nostra and the International National Trusts Organisation.

■ The Exponatec Cologne, one of Europe’s most important trade fairsfor the museum, conservation and restoration sectors, took placefrom 20 to 22 November in Cologne, Germany. On 21 November,Europa Nostra Deutschland, the German Foundation for MonumentProtection and the German Castles Association organised a colloquiumabout the limits of public monuments protection and the necessityfor public bodies to cooperate closely with private stakeholders.

The renowned Italian writer Claudio Magris received from the President of the Portuguese Republic Anibal Cavaco Silva the

very first European Award for Raising Public Awareness on Cultural Heritage, named after the late Portuguese journalist,

cultural activist and politician Helena Vaz da Silva. This new Award was instituted by Centro Nacional de Cultura in

cooperation with Europa Nostra. The award ceremony was held at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (21/10). | L’écrivain

italien renommé, Claudio Magris, a reçu de la part du Président de la République portugaise, Anibal Cavaco Silva, le tout

premier Prix européen pour la sensibilisation du public au patrimoine culturel dont le nom rend hommage à la journaliste

A growing number of Country Representations has been, or is in the process of beingestablished to represent and promote the interests of Europa Nostra in individualcountries. They seek to ensure the best possible two-way communicationbetween members in their country and Europa Nostra’s main decision-makingbodies and the International Secretariat in The Hague and in Brussels. Countryrepresentations provide valuable support to the various aspects of Europa Nostra’swork (Policy matters, Heritage in Danger, Heritage Awards) and they contribute toan increased visibility of Europa Nostra through effective membership drives, successful fundraising efforts, and by organising local Europa Nostra events (lectures, debates, local award ceremonies, visits).

Nous avons un réseau croissant de délégations nationales (existantes ou en cours deformation) qui ont la tâche de représenter et de promouvoir les intérêts d’Europa Nostradans leur propre pays. Elles s’emploient à assurer une communication efficace entreles membres d’Europa Nostra qui sont basés dans leur pays et les principaux organesdécisionnels d’Europa Nostra ainsi qu’avec notre Secrétariat international à La Haye età Bruxelles. Les délégations nationales apportent leur soutien précieux aux différentesactivités d’Europa Nostra (questions relatives aux politiques européennes, patrimoine en danger, Prix) et contribuent à l’accroissement de notre visibilité en recrutant denouveaux membres, en faisant des récoltes de fonds et en organisant divers événementsd’Europa Nostra dans leur pays (conférences, débats, cérémonies locales de remise desPrix, visites).

On the occasion of Europa Nostra’s 50th anniversary, the Belgium-based rose hybridizer and grower ‘Rosa Mundo’ decided to honour the mission of Europa Nostra and support its action

towards saving Europe’s most threatened monuments and sites with the launch of the ‘Rosa Europa Nostra’. The ‘Rosa Europa Nostra’ is a perfect addition to any garden, it has an average

height of 140 cm and continued flowering; it has the pleasant fragrance of wild roses and is easy to care for. The rose can be ordered online and delivered anywhere in Europe. For the sale

of every rose, which costs v 22,50, Rosa Mundo is making a donation of v 9 to Europa Nostra. ‘Rosa Europa Nostra’ is therefore an imaginative and most welcome tool of crowd-funding.

Financesthe Awards Scheme’s deficits from previous years. As a result, ourGeneral Reserve at the end of 2013 decreased, now amounting toEuro 123.312. This gives a more realistic picture of our overall financial position. The Board is fully committed to structurallyimproving the situation, in line with the recommendations made bythe Council, the Audit Committee and the General Assembly. For the first time in 2013, we have invited the Audit Committee to ourannual meeting with the external auditors KPMG, which was appreciated by both KPMG and the Audit Committee.

The augmented visibility and reputation of Europa Nostra created in2013 - thanks to the impressive Congress and Awards Ceremony inAthens, the launch of “The 7 Most Endangered” in partnership withthe European Investment Bank Institute, and as well as our activeinvolvement in the “New Narrative for Europe” initiative and ourcoordinating role in the European cooperation project “CulturalHeritage counts for Europe” - places us in the best possible positionfor future fundraising, new EC grant applications and membershiprecruitment activities.

Our sincere gratitude goes in particular to our small, dedicated staffled by our Secretary General, our loyal members and volunteers, ourcountry representations, and to our partners and donors. Europa Nostra’s vibrant Jubilee year 2013, a celebration of its 50th

anniversary, ended with a modest positive financial result. Anunprecedented level of activities has been achieved, for the financingof which we were able to substantially raise our total income in comparison to 2012 (over Euro 267.000). Total expenditure for allactivities in 2013 increased by over Euro 100.000 compared to cost ofactivities in 2012, however general expenses did not grow, thanks tovery rigid cost control and an improved activities/overhead ratio.

The positive financial result for the year 2013 of 78.900 Euro stemsmainly from the successful fundraising activities by Elliniki Etairia,our Greek co-organiser for the annual Congress and AwardsCeremony in June 2013 in Athens. Europa Nostra decided in advancethat any money raised in Greece would not be used for activities elsewhere in Europe. In other words, a surplus, if any, would be usedonly for future Europa Nostra activities taking place in Greece. Tothat effect, a designated reserve for future activities in Greece hasbeen created in our balance sheet, which shows that Euro 65.504from the surplus is still available for these activities, the specifics ofwhich Europa Nostra will decide and on which Elliniki Etairia - actingon behalf of Europa Nostra - will keep due records.

The income from annual membership fees declined in 2013, which is a worrying trend. In the course of 2014, the InternationalSecretariat will develop action plans to further update the member-ship administration and to recruit new members with the help ofBoard and Council Members. A positive development is that donations by Individual Members, Organisations and Foundations aswell as by President’s Circle Members increased in 2013.

In the past, due to the fact that the Awards Scheme programme, executed in partnership with the European Union, was only partly(60%) funded by the EC, an Awards Scheme Fund was created in ourbalance sheet. In recent years, this fund became negative, due to theinsufficient amount of funding raised annually to cover the remaining40% of the Awards Scheme budget. In the course of 2013, the Boarddecided to discontinue this practice, because it is not realistic topresume that fundraising for future years will ever be able to cover

L’année 2013, qui fut particulièrement intense pour Europa Nostra enraison de la célébration de son 50ème anniversaire, s’est conclue parun résultat financier positif modeste. Un nombre d’activités sansprécédent a été réalisé, pour le financement desquelles nous avonspu sensiblement augmenter notre revenu total par rapport à 2012(un peu plus de 267.000 euros de revenu supplémentaire). Lesdépenses totales pour l’ensemble des activités 2013 ont augmentéd’un peu plus de 100.000 euros par rapport au coût des activités2012, mais les frais généraux n’ont pas augmenté grâce au contrôlestrict des coûts et grâce à un meilleur rapport activités/frais généraux.

Le résultat financier positif de 78.900 euros pour l’année 2013 provienten grande partie des activités de récolte de fonds, menées avec succèspar nos collègues grecs d’Elliniki Etairia ayant co-organisé notreCongrès annuel et la Cérémonie de remise des Prix en juin 2013 àAthènes. Europa Nostra avait décidé à l’avance que tous les fondsrecueillis en Grèce ne seraient pas utilisés pour des activités menéesailleurs en Europe. En d’autres termes, tout excédent, le cas échéant,serait utilisé pour les activités futures d’Europa Nostra en Grèce. Acet effet, une réserve dédiée aux activités futures en Grèce a étécréée dans notre bilan, montrant que les 65.504 euros provenant del’excédent sont toujours disponibles pour les activités qu’EuropaNostra décidera d’organiser dans ce pays et qu’Elliniki Etairia contrôleraau nom d’Europa Nostra.

Le revenu des cotisations annuelles de nos membres a diminué en2013, ce qui est une tendance inquiétante. Au cours de l’année 2014,le Secrétariat international a l’intention d’élaborer des plans d’actionpour améliorer la gestion des adhésions, et aussi pour recruter denouveaux membres avec l’aide de membres du Comité exécutif et duConseil. Une évolution positive est que les dons provenant des membresindividuels, d’associations et de fondations, ainsi que de membres duCercle du Président, ont augmenté en 2013.

Dans le passé, en réponse au fait que le programme des Prix, exécutéen partenariat avec l’Union européenne, n’était que partiellement(60%) financé par la CE, un fonds destiné au programme des Prix aété créé dans notre bilan. Au cours des dernières années, ce fonds est

devenu négatif, en raison de l’insuffisance du financement recueilliannuellement pour couvrir les 40% restant du budget du programmedes Prix. Au cours de l’année 2013, le Comité exécutif a décidé demettre fin à cette pratique car il n’est pas réaliste de supposer que lacollecte de fonds pour les années à venir pourra couvrir les déficitsdes années passées. En conséquence, notre réserve générale à la finde 2013 a diminué et s’élève à présent à 123.312 euros seulement.Cela donne une image réaliste de notre situation financière globale.Le Comité exécutif s’engage pleinement à améliorer structurellementla situation, en ligne avec les recommandations formulées par leConseil, le Comité d’Audit et l’Assemblée générale. Pour la premièrefois en 2013, nous avons invité le Comité d’Audit lors de notre réunionannuelle avec les auditeurs externes de KPMG, ce qui a été appréciéà la fois par KPMG et le Comité d’Audit.

La visibilité et la réputation d’Europa Nostra ont continué à croîtreen 2013 – grâce à l’impressionnante Cérémonie de remise des Prix etau Congrès à Athènes, au lancement du programme des « 7 sites lesplus menacés » en partenariat avec l’Institut de la Banque européenned’investissement, ainsi qu’à notre participation active dans le« Nouveau récit pour l’Europe » et notre rôle de coordinateur dans leprojet de coopération européenne « Le Patrimoine culturel comptepour l’Europe ». Un tel résultat nous met en excellente position pour mener avec succès de futures récoltes de fonds, de nouvellesdemandes de subventions de la CE et diverses activités de recrutementde membres.

Notre sincère gratitude va en particulier à notre petite équipe dévouée,dirigée par notre Secrétaire générale, nos fidèles membres et bénévoles,nos délégations nationales, ainsi qu’à nos partenaires et donateurs.Merci à tous pour votre dévotion, votre expertise, votre disponibilité etvotre soutien. From May 2013 to May 2014, the International Secretariat has workedon the preparation of Europa Nostra’s Annual Congress in Vienna.

Thanks to the dedication of our International Secretariat in The Hagueand Brussels, as well as of our committed team in Vienna led by ourCouncil member Alexander Kottulinsky, Europa Nostra has prepared amost interesting Congress programme from 2-6 May in Austria. The Congress, under the patronage of the Federal President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, will include a General Assembly and a panel-discussion on the “New Narrative for Europe” at Dorotheum (4 May)and will culminate with the European Heritage Awards Ceremony atthe Burgtheater (5 May). The Ceremony will be co-hosted by EUCommissioner Androulla Vassiliou and Plácido Domingo, President ofEuropa Nostra. The traditional industrial heritage visit will be organisedby Europa Nostra’s Industrial and Engineering Heritage CommitteeIEHC. The post-congress excursion to the Wachau Valley, UNESCOWorld Heritage Site, was organised by Europa Nostra Austria with thekind support of the Land Lower Austria, the Danube University inKrems, the Melk Monastery and the City of Krems. The 2014 Congressis supported by the Federal Ministry for the Arts and Culture and byother public and private bodies from Austria.

Grâce au dévouement de notre Secrétariat international de La Haye,notre Bureau de Bruxelles, ainsi que notre équipe à Vienne, avec entête notre membre du Conseil, Alexander Kottulinsky, Europa Nostra a élaboré un programme des plus intéressants pour le Congrès qui se tiendra du 2 au 6 mai en Autriche. Le Congrès qui bénéficie du hautpatronage du Président fédéral de la République d’Autriche, HeinzFischer, comprendra une Assemblée générale et une table ronde sur le « Nouveau récit pour l’Europe » au Dorotheum (4 mai) et se conclurapar la Cérémonie européenne de remise des Prix du patrimoine culturelau Burgtheater (5 mai). Notre Comité pour le patrimoine industriel et d’ingénierie vaaussi organiser, comme pendant les Congrès précédents, des visites dupatrimoine industriel à Vienne. L’excursion post-Congrès dans la vallée de la Wachau, site classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, aété organisée par Europa Nostra Autriche avec l’aimable soutien de la région de Basse-Autriche, l’Université du Danube à Krems, lemonastère de Melk et la ville de Krems. Le Congrès 2014 est soutenu parle ministère fédéral des arts et de la culture, et par d’autres organismespublics et privés en Autriche.
