Mission:

Our mission is to serve the society and mainstream the marginalized and under-privileged sections of the local community by informing, educating, enlightening and awakening the people in order to uplift their social, psychological and physical well-being. We also give insights on the eternal truths of who am I and who is the creator and what is the purpose of life.

Values are attractive.

We aspire to promote social well being of people and help them come out of the cocoon of backwardness and stagnation. It is a dream to push radio into every household of the region and let the people extract utmost benefit. Bringing local community at par with the mainstream by enabling them to share information, stories, experiences that can lead to their development as creative contributors to the society.

The past two years have been very eventful and Radio Madhuban has been constantly trying to strengthen and channelize its efforts to help in holistic development of the community. In this regard, the entire Radio Madhuban team of volunteers has been focusing their energies to truly help the local people in more than one way, to understand their problems and involve them in the solutions.

The team has been growing ever since the year of inception and a lot of young and talented volunteers have worked with Radio Madhuban on different projects and programs to bring out appreciable results. We currently have a team of 18 Radio Jockies (RJs) and a support team of over 15 volunteers who assist in different capacities in various projects and related tasks. 3 new members joined our team this year, to put us one step closer to fulfilling our vision of making Radio Madhuban a complete community driven initiative. The team started 4

new shows to cater to the demand of time and people. We now broadcast 26 shows in a week.

The establishment of Radio Madhuban Community Society (RMCS) was a great milestone in the year-long journey. Several community development projects that were carried on by Radio Madhuban have now been undertaken by the Society and have been running in a more organized and regular manner. The creation of RMCS also rises opportunities for acquiring the requisite support and sponsorship for these community building and village-outreach projects and events.

This year, Radio Madhuban also organised a mega community event, titled “Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchan Hai”, which was a singing talent hunt contest for the locale. Over 250 people participated and we received more than 700 sms votes for participants. It was for the first time Radio Madhuban conducted such a big event for art and culture promotion in the community.

The team has also been very actively participating in various conferences and seminars in order to promote our efforts and also learn from others’ experiences. Our team participated in 13 different regional, national and international conferences organized by governmental and independent bodies in different parts of the country. Mr Yashwant Patil was elected as the Vice-President of CRA(Community Radio Association) Northern Chapter at the Community Radio Sammelan, held in February’13.

Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM has been striving hard to set the developmental process in swift motion in Abu. We have almost completed 3 years in serving the community, building partnerships and forging bonds that shall hopefully last for a long time. It is only with everyone’s support that we have come so far.

- B.K. Ramesh N. Shah Secretary, Radio Madhuban Community Society

At Radio Madhuban, we focus on short term goals as means to achieve our long term goal of ensuring a sustainable growth of the local community.

In keeping with our vision, we have conducted surveys and research programs to identify the key areas that need attention. With a defined purpose, we have developed target-specific projects to address the need. In the process, Radio Madhuban has managed to garner immense support from the community. We have also formed bonds with organizations and groups who share a similar vision for the betterment of the community.

The year 2014 also seems to be a promising one. We now plan to up the ante on our efforts of community development

by maximizing community participation. We aim to launch a series of projects focusing primarily on the identified problems.

We are exploring the probability of enhancing our methods of community development by discussing the problems with certain organizations that specialize in devising solutions. We are also planning to increase volunteer participation such that we can direct our energies to further our work. We are certain that the year will take Radio Madhuban to every household.

However, it is certain that Radio Madhuban will become the voice of the hundreds of waste-pickers in Abu Road and will strive to provide them with a better livelihood. We hope that the community continues to love and support us in our endeavour and that we remain guided by our core values.

We look forward to the external support for carrying out sustainable community development projects in the region.

Community Voice as a fraction of Total Production •NationalrecognitionfromRajyaSabhaTV

Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM was selected by Rajya Sabha TV for two episode of their program “Gosthi”. Rajya Sabha TV is the official channel of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament and Gosthi is their initiative to promote social awareness and acknowledge community development.

The wide-ranging efforts of team Radio Madhuban and Brahma Kumaris in the field of women empowerment and sustainability were recognised by a national channel of such high repute. Rajya Sabha TV had sent a team of six people to the studios of Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM for a talk show with our panellists on these fundamental issues to understand the growth process and progress concerns in Abu Road.

All in all it was a very fortunate opportunity for Radio Madhuban to host such an initiative and be a part of development nationwide.

T 2013 In the past years of service in

Abu Road, Radio Madhuban has formed strong bonds with the local community. People now relate to Radio Madhuban 90.4 FM as a ‘radio station for the people, by the local people and of the community’. People specially celebrate festivals and other occasions with our team in the studio and send their best wishes through us. Community acceptance and community involvement is the biggest achievement for any Community Radio Station.

The journey up till here, in the tribal region of Abu Road, has not been very easy. But the committed spirit and dedication of the team has made it possible that now even tribal people from remotest corners of Abu Road want to voice their opinion on Radio Madhuban.

The fact that we received around 24967 messages and 3700 calls from listeners this year is a testimony to the enhanced community involvement. Moreover, all shows have gone through remarked involvement in the on-air production and outreach projects and programs.

our Well WISherS

Social development and community upliftment are dynamic concepts and need rigorous efforts. Every community has evolved and sustained in a unique manner, different from any other community, and therefore development of a community requires wide-ranging and complete understanding of not only its culture and tradition, but also of its problems and people’s perspective towards a social change.

Not every community accepts change very easily. Moreover, while it is easy to bring about some changes, certain modifications take time. Through active and constant community involvement, Radio Madhuban realised that to bring about a phenomenal change in the social, economic and psychological lives of people in Abu Road, the team will have to reach out to the local community.

Radio Madhuban has organized and participated in several village outreach programs this year.

1. Women Empowerment CampaignIn the digital age, where on the one hand science and technology are at the pinnacle and

the entire world is connected via internet, on the other hand, women in most pockets of India are victim of oppression and exploitation. They have to struggle through the unequal opportunities carved for them by the mixed forces of religion, culture and society.

Keeping this in mind, Radio Madhuban organized a 10 day “Women Empowerment Campaign” from 1st-10th March, 2013 on the occasion of International Women’s Day for the women of Abu Road. Several village outreach programs were organized to educate and inform women. On 1st March, the home-makers of Abu Road learnt about their legal rights, on 2nd March, the womenfolk of Morthala were involved in a discussion about ‘nurturing addiction-free families’.

On 4th March, a program celebrating the ‘various roles of women in the society’ was organized in the NAB Pheroze & Noshir Merwanji Rehabilitation Centre for Blind, Mount Abu. Moreover, women in Morthala were informed about the multiple advantages of education and literacy on 8th March.

Another highlight of this program was that, every evening, women from the local community, were invited in the studio to share their stories and ideas. This show served as a source of great inspiration for all the listeners. Ward Panch, Navli Kumari, is the only educated girl in Kyariya village. Her vision for the village, shaped with dynamic ideas, illustrated her confidence. A college student, Khushboo, said that girls should be brave and strong, while an assistant manager, Ms Salima floated the idea that spiritual empowerment plays a highly significant role in the overall progress of women.

Expounding upon the importance of education in life, Ms Kranti, Principal of the Govt. Primary

a balanced relation. Jayanti Didi, Director, Brahma Kumaris centers in Europe, also expressed that women should be socially informed and spiritually awakened to walk on the path to progress.

The campaign increased awareness about the presence and Social services of Radio Madhuban and its projects for community upliftment among the local people. Also, a lot of women gained courage and shared their opinions and ideas about their daily problems. The outreach programs were a success with good participation.

School, Mungthala, inspired all the listeners to not only learn and grow but also encourage and help others to prosper. Ms Laxmi, ward panch, Murthal and Ms. Sudha, Head of the “Mahila Sahayak Sansthan” brought forward the idea of creating a unique identity for every individual. They avowed that every woman must be aware of her rights and duties and must not leave any stone unturned to gain what rightfully belongs to her. Two actively involved members of the ‘Jan Chetna

Sansthan’, Ms. Pushpa and Ms. Chandrakanta, shared their life stories to illustrate their struggle for success. They both had to suffer due to marriage at an early age but to awaken their sisters & mothers they joined the organization to work for women empowerment. Their experience inspired others and also elucidated the ramifications of child marriage.

Apart from this, an unparalleled duo of mother-in-law, Ms Manju, and daughter-in-law, Ms Anamika shared their interesting relationship through this show. They brought into light the fact that a woman is a woman’s best friend.

Therefore harmony and cooperation are vital for

2. The gift of life – Blood DonationBlood donation is like giving a new life. A blood donor is a saviour, a hero in true sense. Radio Madhuban celebrated the World Donor’s Day on 14th June, 2013 to note the contribution of the blood donors and also encourage other people to start donating blood.

Dr Anita, an experienced doctor in blood bank services, explained the listeners about the merits of donating blood. While assuring that anybody above the age of 18 years and weighing 45 kg and more is considered a healthy donor, she added that donating blood not only regulated the flow of blood in the donor’s body, but also prevents several cardio-vascular diseases. She strongly opposed all the myths about blood donation and said that it instead enhances the donor’s immunity.

Apart from this, other guests and RJs shared their ideas about blood donation and

encouraged people to donate blood in every 4 months. Creative promos were also aired to highlight the importance of blood donation.

The blood donation celebrations were covered live form the Om Shanti Bhawan, Mt Abu. SDM Jitendra Kumar and Dr Pratap shared the medical, spiritual and practical benefits of blood donation. They encouraged the youth to be regular blood donors.

Developmental change of a stature so vast and vivid requires constant and repeated efforts. Radio Madhuban, therefore, earnestly endeavours to promote its projects that involve specially designed year-round activities in major thrust areas. We have identified 13 major thrust areas and actively work to address these issues. We work for:

• Education

• DrugDe-addiction

• RoadSafety

• SustainableDevelopment

• ArtandCulture

• WomenEmpowerment

• OrganicFarming

• YouthLeadership

• ValuesandMorals

• SocialEvils

• Health&Hygiene

• ChildrenPersonalityDevelopment

• SeniorCitizens

Our team has designed special projects focusing on these major issues to achieve the aim of holistic development of the local community. The goal of community upliftment and mainstreaming of the marginalized sections of society can only be met if these major areas are looked after well.

All our activities, small or big, are inclined towards making a difference to the life of people and bringing about the desired changes in the major focus areas. All throughout the year, the team undertakes several on-air campaigns, designs special shows and capsules aimed at enhancing the quality of life of people. All shows are so designed as to cater to these specific thrust areas and also very nicely interlink these issues with one another to bring about holistic development. A brief detail of some initiatives and projects undertaken during the year 2013 is given below.

1. Project “Shiksha”In 2013, two Mass Communication students from IGNOU, Delhi joined us as interns to learn the dynamics of a radio station, its functioning and management and voluntarily assist in our activities. They, along with our team conducted a comprehensive study and base line survey of the area to gather detailed information in the form of data sheets and survey forms about the educational background and literacy status of the local community.

Apart from all the community-outreach initiatives, we also broadcast a highly informative and interactive show titled “Udaan”, aimed at appending knowledge of the listeners. The show includes short stories, puzzles, quizzes, scientific information, poems, art and craft ideas and information about other elements of primary education.

communIty development projectS

The show often has guests to interact with the listeners. They are often experts from different fields who try to share their knowledge about languages or music among other things. The show also congratulates students for their meritorious performance and achievements.

Most importantly, our team has approached teachers in the region and maintained a collection of recordings of the prescribed syllabus of social science for classes 6th and 8th in order to help students revise their concepts and understand them in a better way. This effort has been appreciated by many schools in the region and radio has also been used in

classrooms by teachers to aid in teaching a few chapters of the subject.

Over time, the project has been designed to bring about significant improvement in the understanding and knowledge of the common folk. We have adopted a village from the area and the entire program concentrates on the educational needs of the people of this village.

Since the area is extremely backward, we have to assemble all the necessary resources like books, stationary items, reading material, teachers and other assistance to fulfil the goal of educating the underprivileged children and elderly people alike.

2. Say NO to tobaccoRadio Madhuban in collaboration with the Medical Wing of Brahma Kumaris, organized a “Say NO to Tobacco Rally” in Abu Road on 31st March to observe “World No Tobacco Day”. The aim was to sensitize people about the harmful effects of tobacco and free the society from the evils of tobacco.

Over 70 local people came together to form a drug de-addiction train. A stage program was also organized for the local community

to educate people through innovative methods about the problem. Dr. Satish Gupta, Mr. Banwarilal Soni, President of the Lions Club, shared their ideas about the ill-effects of tobacco and motivated people to give up smoking during the stage program.

RJ Ramesh also presented a highly moving performance “Kul Deepak” showcasing the downfall of a man’s family because of his smoking habit. Dr Rupal, Global Hospital, Mt

Abu persuaded people to pledge to ‘say no to tobacco’.

Dr Anil Chawla, cardiologist, Mt. Abu recorded a capsule for 90.4 FM that was broadcasted several times consecutively for 3 days to encourage people to give up smoking and not to use tobacco. Radio Madhuban also recorded the experiences and messages of local people and aired them throughout the day to spread awareness in the community.

3. Global Road Safety Week

Radio Madhuban launched project titled “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, Ye Hai Traffic Meri Jaan”, to promote safety on roads. The United Nations had declared the week from 6th-12th May, 2013 as the Global Road Safety week with the theme –“Pedestrian Safety” and it was a good opportunity to bring the global initiatives local.

The project included several on-air programs, promotion capsules and catchy one-liners which were broadcast throughout the

week to motivate and encourage people to observe traffic rules. Out team went to different villages and educated people about the road safety rules. The focal show “7 din 7 Ghante” was broadcasted every day at 6 pm and featured discussions and talks with various government officials and related personnel on different aspects and elements of ‘safety on roads’.

“Kadak Hawaldar”, a brainchild of the radio Madhuban team, was the on-air mascot of the project – a voice that used satire and wit to inform the community in an interesting and entertaining manner.

4. World Environment Day

Radio Madhuban celebrated 'World Environment Day' on 5th June to spread awareness about the environmental issues prevailing in the community. The UN declared 'Think, Eat, Save' as the theme of the day. Radio Madhuban made sure that each one of our community members were made aware of this theme.

On 5th June from morning to evening in every show RJ's explained about the theme 'Think, Eat, Save'. The RJ's of Radio Madhuban reached out to common people

Another element which was concentrated on the same day was the plight and life of cleaners around us who make sure our surroundings are clean. Radio Madhuban reached Abu Road railway station and talked to those workers over there whose sole responsibility is to keep the station clean. When we asked what people can do to keep the station cleaner one of the employee, Mr. Dinesh, said "If people think of railway platforms to be same as their home then platform would be a lot cleaner. It will result in more cleanliness and lesser reason for diseases to come." Regarding the same subject Radio Madhuban presented

and food experts alike. We inquired them about consequences and reasons for wasting food. The knowledge gleaned from these discussions was presented to all our listeners. Our community RJ's reached out to each and every house, especially house makers. Among them was one special case of Mrs Monika, a government school teacher and also resident of Abu Road whom we inquired on the subject. She said her secret of saving food was eating food together or even if the food remained to save it properly so that it can be used next day. She requested listeners to never throw away food because there will always be an unfortunate person who might need it.

the public's problem to the local municipal chairman. On request he shared with his programs and proposals to solve this problem.

Simultaneously Radio Madhuban created and played capsules on subjects such as lesser usage of plastic items, planting of more trees, reducing the habit of dumping waste in our environment and lastly advantages of using eco friendly products. These capsules were played frequently to engrave their importance into people's mind. We hope that this small initiative from Radio Madhuban team has brought some changes in our community. In future we will surely keep on taking such initiatives. So "KEEP LISTENING, KEEP SMILING."

5. Harit RajasthanHarit Rajasthan geared up the entire Mount Abu to commit to plant more than 21 thousand saplings and disperse more than 11, 00, 000 seeds in the lap of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Under the able tutelage of the SDM of Mount Abu Mr. Jitendra Kumar Soni IAS, the whole town has risen as one body to excel in the greening crusade never ever seen before.

Team Radio Madhuban not only spread the news around and publicised the event, but also planted over 1 thousand saplings in Abu Road and nearby areas. This initiative was a big step towards educating people green and eco-friendly practices and habits.

6.MeriAwazHiPehchanHaiRadio Madhuban launched a project titled “Meri Awaz Hi Pehchan Hai” to promote & present a platform to the people to showcase their talent in order to promote local artists and encourage art and music. In the past, we have made several attempts to motivate local singers, musicians and other artists by organizing outreach programs, public shows and radio shows. Radio Madhuban also organizes a singing competition every year for the community to bring people together and lift the spirit of young budding talent.

This year, we thought of taking it to another level. Our team promoted the event in the community and encouraged everyone over 5 years of age to audition for the competition. The format of the competition titled “Meri Awaz Hi Pehchan Hai” was designed in a way very similar to a talent hunt. It was divided into 5 phases and each phase was an elimination round to only take forward the best. The competition started in July with 250 participants who were judged on several criteria to get the best 6 in the grand finale. Bhagwan Singh, Rafiq, Nivedita, Ruchi Sharma, Akansha and Rashi entered the grand finale after proving their singing abilities in the tough and competitive auditions and following rounds. To increase community participation and make it a big event, public opinion was also considered in selecting the finalists. People were called upon to sms and vote for their favorite singer.

On 4th September, 2013 the grand finale was organized with all the glamour and glitter. Mr. Harish Moyal, a famous singer & AMI Award winner and Anwar Khan, a music prodigy from Jaipur Gharana judged our contestants. They even commented that it was extremely difficult to choose from the final 6, because they all were so close and highly talented. Also, most of them had not received any formal training and it was only surprising to see such

brilliant flair in their understanding of music and singing abilities. However, the judges had to choose 3 winners. Rafiq stood first and was awarded a trophy and a cash reward of Rs. 11,000. Nivedita bagged the second prize of Rs. 8,000 and Bhagwan Singh stood third and was rewarded with Rs. 5,000.

Our chief guest, Mr. Jitender Soni, SDM, Mt. Abu appreciated the effort of team Radio Madhuban and expressed the need of such competitions, not only for singing but also for dancing and acting, to promote local talent and provide them with a platform to showcase their skills. We are thankful to our listeners for supporting us and participating with such zeal and making this event a success. We are also deeply thankful to our sponsors Mr. Naresh Trivedi, Trivedi Marbals; Mr. Govind Rawal, Real India Cooperative Society; Dr. Mahavir Bansal, Bansal Hospitals; Mr. Rameswarlal Agrawal, Aravali Plasto; Mr. Pramod Choudhry, Director, B.S. Memorial; Mr. Sumit Mahendar, Rotary Club and Mr. Mayank, Axis Bank for sponsoring the event and rewarding our winners with generous cash prizes.

We hope the attempts will bring the community closer and enable people to come forward and participate in community activities.

A radio jockey is the backbone of a radio station. Radio Madhuban is blessed to have a strong team of dedicated and motivated RJs who share pioneering spirit to serve the community. They have been contributing so much to community development through their shows and outreach efforts. They research and survey the local areas to bring to surface the problems faced by people and to identify collective solutions to these issues.

A lot of our RJs have a huge fan-following and just so many listeners want to talk to them on-air. They seek their inspiration in the love and support they receive from the community. We are proud to have a team of 18 RJs who make radio Madhuban what it is.

While RJs infuse life into the microphone, the technical and support teams actually run a radio station. The support team includes top leadership, responsible for developing ideas into community relevant on-air shows and designing their structure and modules. The support team also looks after the station management, show production and related tasks. All the village outreach programs and community development projects are the brainchild of the support team. The technical team provides the much needed technical support to the radio station. They update and maintain our systems, software and ensure that all the technology is up-to-date and efficiently used. Radio Madhuban is set apart from all other radio stations because of the efforts and leadership of the members.

However the growth of this Radio which was slow has picked up the pace with the active participation of the then Prime Minister of India Late Rajiv Gandhi, who himself was the active licensed amateur Radio operator with the license VU2RG. To give fillip to the Ham Radio use, He has

Over the years, during several community visits, we have come across many children in the villages of Abu Road who are denied fundamental rights and freedom to learn and grow. But we have been deeply saddened by the misery of some of their lives, those who have to earn for their families, bear the brunt of life at a tender age, and walk through the all hardships when they should rather play and run in open fields.

One such group of children is the waste-pickers. Their lives are marked by severe plight, not only because they are involved in laborious activities, but also because they have to fetch for livelihood form our waste. What we throw away, so often finds a place in their empty lives. They lead a life of dullness with blackened future and a dejected routine.

The waste collection sector is an informal

sector; no one takes the responsibility of the safety and security of the waste-pickers. Ironically, we all need them, but no one usually treats them well.

Radio Madhuban has decided to change the poor scenario, to free the children from this job and mainstream them into education in order to facilitate their holistic development. Our team has been interacting with a lot of waste-picking families to understand their problems and reasons that tie them to this deprived job.

In the new year, we plan to carry ahead this initiative and start a campaign to support the cause and undertake several outreach programs for the upliftment of their lives.

Joins us and help making life beautiful for a child.
